What was Froning's time?

Rich froning in background wins.

Comment #2 - Posted by: Mag at April 13, 2013 5:20 PM

Watching the video, I couldn't help but notice Rich Froning and Neil Maddox in the background. Curious as to what their times were.

No music, no talking, just working. I like that!

Somebody remind me why gloves are bad please. I always hear lots of people commenting on "nice gloves" but still don't understand why.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Brhino at April 13, 2013 7:56 PM

WOW!! Amazing.
weights dropped at about 4:06, i'm guessing they were Froning's when he finished.

Sunday musings...

1) Strava. Norwegian for "to strive". Also the name of a biking app with which you can compare un-judged competitive rides.

I'm going with "strive".

2) Confidence. Among the more terrifying words any parent might hear: "I've done the research. I know what I'm doing." Shiver.

Trust, but verify.

3) Integrity. Welp, I guess I haven't quite finished with the Open yet. Last night HQ posted an article on the Games site about CrossFit 360 and two of its member/athletes, Noah Ohlsen and Guido Trinidad. The Reader's Digest version is this: while reviewing the video of Noah's 13.5 to glean some coaching tips the 360 duo discovered a thruster which they decided should have been a no-rep. They did the right thing, what the overwhelming majority of CrossFitters at all levels of experience would do, they notified HQ of the revised score.

And dropped their Games team from 30th to 31st, and therefore out of the Regionals.

Man bites dog? Nope. Not in the least. Not if it's CrossFit. This is the norm, and has been for many years. This remains the norm in spite of the introduction of prize money and endorsements into the CrossFit Games. We call our own penalties, just like golfers. We call them as we know them at any given time. Sure, we will go right up to the edge of a rule or a standard in a competition (think Tiger and "close proximity" at the Masters), but we respect the rules and we respect the game and we respect CrossFit and other CrossFitters too much to try to "get over." I think that's why it's such a big deal when someone does deliberately try to get away with something, why that gets so much electronic "ink".

Show me I'm right. Let's remember all of the gnashing of teeth, the collective concern that was expressed when there were questions of rule violations. Let's get fired up 10X as much as we got about that stuff. Let's make it known that this is how we roll, Games or no Games. Reach out to Noah and Guido with a "Good on ya".

Make a big deal about doing the right thing? Hmmm...maybe this could be man bites dog.

4) Affiliate choice. Back in the day, before the astronomic growth of the CrossFit Affiliate program and before there were jokes about the number of CrossFit gyms vs. Starbucks, a CrossFit program was really a much more personal endeavor. Unless you were one of those very fortunate souls to belong to the first 100 or 200 gyms you did CrossFit alone, or in a very tiny group. Everything about CF was really "you vs. you" because the three people in your gym were "me, myself, and I". We could truly say that the omnibus CrossFit really was for everyone, at least everyone who was willing to learn enough to adapt and scale the WOD. Only those given to self-loathing had any problems with the community aspect of their gyms.

Now? People new to CrossFit are often unaware that an online version even exists; they are clueless when you ask them about anything that might be on CrossFit.com. Some large percentage of people only know the CrossFit Affiliate model and are introduced to CrossFit by someone who knows someone at some CrossFit Anywhere. Their first exposure to CrossFit and the CrossFit community occurs when they walk through the front door of the Affiliate. This changes the conversation. With a very few, really unique exceptions CrossFit is STILL for everyone. However, every CrossFit Affiliate is not for everyone.

In Lil'bingo's Affiliate this morning I listened to one of the members who quite sadly related the tale of a good friend who was turned off by the vibe at the Affiliate he visited. He felt right away that he didn't fit. Didn't feel welcomed. Why he felt this way is probably not all that important because someone else surely walked in the next day and felt right at home. It is a bummer because he has extrapolated his initial experience in this particular Box to ALL Boxes and to CrossFit itself. That's really a shame because from all accounts he's a guy who would not only benefit from CrossFit, he's a guy who would really enjoy a CrossFit community.

What went wrong? No idea. Could have been any number of things, really. Maybe no one greeted him, said hi. Maybe he's a little far from his prior athletic peak and he was intimidated by an advanced class, or worse made to feel that he didn't measure up. Might have been something as easy to understand as he showed up on a day when the Open was being judged and all of the trainers and member-ambassadors were just tightly focused on 13.5. Older than the group, younger than the group. Whatever.

I certainly don't mean this to be a critique of this particular Affiliate, or even the vibe given off there. The beauty of the explosive growth to the CrossFit Affiliate model is precisely that you can find a Box that fits both your fitness goals and your "community comfort zone." Each one of us should go out of our way to counsel newcomers to explore the various Affiliates in a community, go out of our way to tell them that how a place feels can be different for different people, and that they shouldn't walk away from CrossFit if the first Box doesn't feel right. Trust me, it's a blast when a friend hits up the Affiliate you suggest and falls instantly in love with everything, so much so that they get a bit angry when you remind them to check out other Boxes! Your gym becomes your "third space" and we should all remember to include comfort in the community when we are making CrossFit suggestions to our friends.

And that Affiliate? In my opinion an Affiliate does have a responsibility to be an ambassador for CrossFit and the CrossFit community at large. Welcoming the newcomer to your gym might be welcoming them to CrossFit itself. Very little is actually asked of Affiliates in the way of CrossFit as a whole. No purchasing agreements or requirements, no mandatory programming or equipment. An annual check and an informal understanding not to disparage Crossfit. My call is that there should be just a little more, a tiny bit of ambassadorship for the program and the community, and all that both can do for all of our friends and family, each time someone new graces your doorway.

Each Affiliate may not be for everyone, and that's really OK. But CrossFit itself, with few exceptions, is STILL for everyone.

I'll see you next week...

Brhino- Gloves are bad because when you workout, you are preparing to love better (i.e. be able to do more, easier). This being said, in life, you 'll never always have a pair of gloves whenever you need them. Build up the callouses on your hands and your hands will protect themselves. Gloves are just a hindrance. Kind of like not being able to do a lift without your special shoes, or your special supplements. You do the work, not the gloves/shoes/powder. Make yourself better by self reliance.

Musings in the filter...

Like everything else in CrossFit, gloves are a personal choice. In a perfect world you would build up calluses that would protect your hands while doing PU, DL, KBS, and the like. You would have the time to shave and pumice them, and your calluses would not cause any hindrance in any other aspect of your life. During the process of building up your calluses you would be lucky and not suffer any tears or rips on your hands. Force to lift or climb something outside the gym you would, indeed, be quite prepared to do so without fear of "not having my equipment."

In a perfect world.

There are those among us who cannot hazard a single tear. Still others would be hampered in their vocation by calluses. Think surgeon, massage therapist, physical therapist, pottery instructor. In their worlds both a tear and a callus would hinder them, and so wearing gloves while working out is a necessary part of the experience.

You vs. you, in an effort to improve yourself. Better without gloves? In a perfect world, sure. Need to wear gloves for whatever reason? No worries. Still.

Ayn Rand is often cited as an inspirational author for crossfitters. "Anti-Fragile" by Nassim Taleb would be a better choice. The basic thesis is that natural systems such as bodies grow more robust in response to stressors.
Anti-fragile is the culmination of the theories first explained in "Fooled by Randomness" and "The Black Swan." Like Rand, Taleb is divisive, acerbic, and a die-hard narcissist. But I think he's really onto something.
(For any Steven Pinker fan, Taleb and Pinker have a very interesting exchange in which Pinker wrote an essay called "fooled by belligerence.")

Comment #45 - Posted by: Charlie at April 14, 2013 8:55 AM

I have been crossfitting for 2 years now and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have alternated between 2 days on, one day rest, two days on and every other day but have maintained strict attendance. I have never started a workout that i did not finish even though some have been brutally slow. I usually have to scale the weights down to about 80% of rx, I have to modifiy muscle ups, have band assistance on pullups and band assist on ring dips. I have lost 35 lbs, increased strength in all lifts, can run faster and further than ever before, can do handstands for time when never could before and do mulitple rope clims when before I could not do even the start of one. It has vastly improved my quality of life.
However... I am tired of being sore. After 300 meters of walking lunges, I could not walk without assistance for 3 days. Today I am hobbling around after doing 300 ft of walking lunges, 150 squats and 75 back extnesions. And after looking at todays WOD, I am not looking forward to not being able to lift my arms for a couple of days.
I want to continue to work hard at the WODs because I enjoy the challenge. I am wondering if there are others of you that are experiencing this and how have you dealt with it.

@46
I think you should definitely continue to scale as you see fit. If you are sore to the point where you can't walk I would say don't hit that muscle group and do light rows, bike, or swim. I use those often for "recovery" workouts. You could try upping your protein intake to 1-1.5 grams per lb of body-weight. You could also try a branch chain amino-acid supplement.

My dad has the same issue with taking longer to recover and being extraordinarily sore. He is 56 and has R.A.; needless to say his muscles don't recover like they once did. Do what you are able to safely and don't worry about the rest.

@ Doug- I agree with the comment above. Cut down the rounds, reps, weight until you achieve the "right level of soreness". Then, gradually work up. There is no point in making yourself so sore that you can't function.

As bingo always says, it is "you vs you".

Now I need to learn to take my own advice! More than a little sore going into today's wod myself.

Walking lunges make me sore like few other exercises, so when that happens I try to remind myself of my old bodybuilding days in the 70's and 80's when I'd be so disappointed if I wasn't sore after a workout...

@bingo,
Its a nice thought that CF is just full of this type of integrity, but for that one example of the Team doing the right thing, I can think of two instances of where CFHQ had to step in and reject the score. I think the problem is growing and we will unfortunately see more next year.

@bingo, thanks for the reminder that the CF community and honest competition are great and very appreciated, but that CF is very much about "you vs. you." I like to compete against others in other sports, but I like CF for competing against myself.

assuming you are on a good diet (paleo/zone) and getting enough sleep, then I wonder if you are getting enough rest, and I don't mean during each week, but rather over longer periods.

I'm no expert but I'm an older athlete (48) who has been doing the main site WOD for about 5 years. I do full paleo which I would strongly suggest if you haven't tried it. also, fish oil supplements. I take 8 x 1400 mg capsules a day.

Through reading the CF journal and talking with Ted Socha who is an old school CF person who introduced me to it, think you should consider taking one WOD cycle off a quarter and a full week off every six months. If a person remains sore and has retrograde performance, it might be due to overtraining. When I say rest, I mean rest, do nothing. I think a lot of people have a real hard time resting, but then wonder why they are seeing injuries or poor performance.

Good luck brother, I hope you feel better. It's awesome to see you hitting it at 59! Remember we wanna keep do this till we're dead so make sure you're resting! (Resting IS training)

Thanks for all of the input. To answer Aaron, I have been on an 80% compliant Paleo diet for over a year and that has been very helpful. But you nailed one issue and that is getting enough sleep. That is a problem I am dealing with. And resting. On a rest day, I will go on a long bike ride.
I will get a fish oil supplement in my diet and look into the amino acid suggestion. And kudos to your dad, 72, I cannot imagine crossfitting with RA. I know how my wife suffers from that condition.
Again, thanks for all of your interest. This is an awesome community.

Unbroken except the 9th round of push-ups. Tried to hold 1 round per minute pace. Breathing was ok, but muscular fatigue slowed me down in the second half.
Still sore hamstrings and butt from 100m sprints and lunges/squats/back extensions WOD. Won't feel better tomorrow.

@#154. Agreed, not enough women commenting. I guessed at women's weight and started DL at 95#. At round 4 had major back spasm and hit the floor until clear, also dropped weight down to 70# (argh!) but finished at 19:52.

Over quickly, but really couldn't have done more. Could possibly have bumped the weight by 10 lbs, but push ups had me spent (strict chest to floor).
Bingo's post resonated with me.
I have no gym. No partners. It's always been just me and the main site (and Brand X scaled WODs).
Had a very long break after an injury and found that this aging body didn't bounce back so well as I had hoped (still better shape than in my 20s). Glad to be getting back into the swing of things!

Did just half of workout and stopped because of low back pain. As I'm very attentive to technique, I guess, it just wasn't a good idea to do a high rep deadlift workout after "Diane" four days ago.

Now I see that I had to get more rest, or even skip this WOD. Didn't listen to my body.
