My 1rm is 215. What would be a good percentage weight to do for the wod?

Comment #7 - Posted by: Jack at March 30, 2013 8:50 PM

I am doing this one at 185-190. Max 3x3 is at 205, so no sense doing it there (unless I want to take 20+ min at this).

I will be doing this one on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on schedule.

Why doesn't the site use a % of bodyweight for the power cleans to make it attainable for all. At a BW of 67kg, 215lb is a nightmare. Managed 12:55 with PC at 70kg.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Marcus clarke at March 31, 2013 5:21 AM

Sunday musings...

1) Bunny. Thug, the world's largest rabbit, seems oddly animated today.

Go figure.

2) Head shot. A UNH hockey player was targeted by a purposeful head shot and knocked out of the game. The play was not seen by the ref, but a linesman saw the assault and the ref ejected the offender after video review.

'Bout time.

3) Communication. "Brevity is often the enemy of clarity." I struggle with this, as any long-time reader of "musings" will attest. But is this true? Is it not measurably more elegant to transmit all that is necessary, and nothing more, in the tiniest package possible.

Does a haiku tell us less than a sonnet?

4) Altruism. Some guy has written a lengthy dissertation on 'getting ahead' that basically boils down to this: the most successful people are those who always seek to help someone else. Hmmm.

I sense a certain lack of transparency, a lack of integrity in this, especially in the invocation of altruism as a part of this strategy. Altruism, by definition, is doing for another without regard for oneself, either the negative (risk to oneself) or the positive (gain for oneself). How can one call it altruism if the core rationale for the mode of behavior is self-promotion?

Don't get me wrong. I like the underlying theme here. Heck, one of my CF buddies (hi Kempie) just accused me of relentless, reckless positivity. As a philosophy and as an actionable daily strategy always being on the lookout for opportunities to help, to be kind, just seems like a better way to approach life. You know, always taking the opportunity to do a tiny favor when there appears to be no tangible benefit to you, now or ever.

As a strategy this sense of calculated altruism for personal advancement seems awfully cynical; I imagine myself tempted to undermine anyone I discover to be playing this game. But as a character trait, one that is deeply ingrained in a person and prompts what can only be seen as spontaneous generosity of and in spirit, I find that awfully attractive and compelling.

I'd likely try to help the latter person succeed.

5) Role model. It's Easter Sunday, the holiest day in the Christian year. As Christians we "celebrate" the ultimate sacrifice, the ultimate expression of altruism in the "history" of mankind. Men and women are tasked with following Him as the ultimate role model for how we are to live our lives.

If one does, indeed, believe, and if one does follow Him as the role model in one's life, then all other talk of role models is irrelevant. Like so many other goals and targets, though, the Lamb as role model is ultimately unachievable by any and all, and thus we have the all too human phenomenon of other, human role models.

What then constitutes a role model? Who is qualified to fill this role? Who would be willing to do so? How do we find these people, these role models?

In a world that was much less heterogenous, where people of all stripes had more in common than not and acknowledged that fact, role models seemed to be a little easier to come by. Audie Murphy. Stan Musial. Jackie Robinson. Heck, even a politician or two filled the bill. Every town had a teacher or a coach or a cop who everyone looked up to. Why then and not now? Partly because of that sense that we were all more the same than less, but partly because we only knew the good stuff about our role models, and on top of that we only really wanted to know the good stuff, ya know?

Once upon a time to be a role model meant to be always trying to do the right thing for the right person at the right time. We forgave the occasional slip because we saw the effort and appreciated the ongoing effort. It inspired us to do better ourselves. We forgave the occasional failure because we knew how hard it is to always look to do that favor, to offer the helping hand, to put forth the best effort. Our sense of our own humanity was extended to our role models as a gift to them such that they would continue to lead us.

The perceived lack of role models in society today says more about us than it does about any role models that we may have discarded. We accentuate our differences rather than our commonalities, no matter how far on either end of the curve lie those differences. We not only accept too much information about our all too human potential role models, we actively seek the "smoking gun" that will bury them. We are all the lesser for all of that, for we deny ourselves the potential that could come from having a role model just a little bit better than ourselves.

For the only perfect role model continues to set an unachievable goal, however noble might be our effort. And He has been dead for some 2000 years now.

I'll see you next week...

For those who advocate %BW for workout standard, this has been said numerous times before, but remember these weight standards are set for "elite fitness" . . . They are what "open" athletes are using . . . If you are not an "open" elite athlete [At 58 I am not & my unsubmitted scores only place me around 300 in the Masters 55-59] scale to what you can currently do with proper form . . . At 58 I do as many WODs at the prescribed weight rather than take the "senior discount" but this will not be one of them . . . CrossFit is for everyone & accessible to everyone precisely because you can scale to whatever weight works for you regardless of what is prescribed . . . I for one do not want %BW standards because I want to challenge myself to do what the "big boys" do . . .

Marcus #14:
I read once that the workouts posted on the main site were based on the assumption that the "average" crossfitter is a 175# male. A suggestion is to scale to a percentage based on that assumption. Example: I am a 200# male and therefore should scale all weight to 1.14 times the PX (a 235# P/C in this WOD). Maybe for you it's less.

Here's the counterargument. At 200 and in good condition, I might be able to handle more weight than a 175-pounder (assuming we have same skill level in technique). But, maybe I'm a little slower in monostructural (running, etc.) or gymnastics due to having to move more bodyweight. I don't get to scale my distances or reps because of my weight being a disadvantage. Why should I have to give up my advantage in weightlifting events? The heavier weight helps level the field when the other event favors a lighter weight athlete.

We each have our strengths. Sometimes the WOD works out in your favor and sometimes it doesn't. 3-2-1-GO.

185# ceans first 2 reps then switched to 175# for the rest
Used rings for the burped pull ups
Busted a blood blister mid WOD so converted to knuckle bush ups during the burps instead of palms down, slowed me down a little but pushed through

For some reason, I like burpee pull-ups a lot more than burpees. Did about half power cleans and half split cleans - they felt good today. After 4+ years, the light bulb finally went off on the full importance of getting the elbows around fast. Not sure why it didn't click until today.
