Great WOD!!!!!!

It's go time for 13.2 and I'll be using TIMERS PRO. That's the app they are using on 13.2.

Bouncing the DL is a no rep. Sorry dude

Comment #5 - Posted by: skidmark at March 13, 2013 5:42 PM

does anyone else think Annie NO REPPED all her deadlifts???? description video clearly states shoulders have to be behind the bar at the top of the lift!

Comment #6 - Posted by: Austin at March 13, 2013 5:57 PM

Not sure about anyone "no-repping" my streaming was choppy and I would like to assume that as a viewer I was not at the right angle to judge anything...just my 2 poods. :)

Comment #7 - Posted by: Woody at March 13, 2013 6:02 PM

@Woody just watched it for a third time. annie is not pulling her shoulders behind the bar at the top as the description video states.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Austin at March 13, 2013 6:06 PM

Comment #2 - Posted by: DrDeadlift at March 13, 2013 5:28 PM

No, it is not. Watch the instructions video.

Wonder if Julie Foucher will do this one over again after seeing what Annie and Lindsay did...

Comment #9 - Posted by: Jason Duby at March 13, 2013 6:07 PM

I thought Annie was close to no-repping but I can't say that I had a better angle than the judge. I'm pretty sure Lindsey no repped her first box jump.

Comment #10 - Posted by: MC M/36/167cm/80kg at March 13, 2013 6:16 PM

7 rds, 3 s2o, 213 reps, good practice run. 8-9 rds for next time. stretch out back and hammies before doing

Comment #11 - Posted by: sebastian 44/178/6'2" at March 13, 2013 6:29 PM

does this mean to get the weight above your head by any means?

Comment #12 - Posted by: Jon M at March 13, 2013 6:30 PM

At #4. Agree, but if the judge allows it...you can't fault the athlete.

Comment #13 - Posted by: Thad at March 13, 2013 6:31 PM

#9

Yes. From shoulder to above head by any means

Comment #14 - Posted by: skidmark at March 13, 2013 6:37 PM

if i have a problem with my shoulder what is a good alternative for the presses

Comment #15 - Posted by: Bond at March 13, 2013 6:39 PM

Too many box jumps, i can hear the Achilles tendons snapping already... :(

Comment #16 - Posted by: Erik at March 13, 2013 6:58 PM

I was less concerned with her shoulders (we were at a weird angle) than with the fact that it didn't look like her hips went through full extension on several reps of box jumps. But what surprised me most is this year's version of box jumps. It looked like the necessity to extend to full while feet are still on the box made it much slower. It is going to make it much harder for a metabolically stronger person to make up time on a stronger individual.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Matt at March 13, 2013 7:04 PM

I love how people post their completely off the wall times thinking people will believe them. That is aimed at comment #2 (Dr. Deadlift). Annie Thorisdottir, the most fit women on earth, barely gets over 12 rounds, but Dr. Deadlift somehow thinks people will believe he/she got a full round more than her even with bouncing the DL. Get real.

Comment #18 - Posted by: Kurt at March 13, 2013 7:12 PM

Looked pretty good to me. Good job julie. Some people are good for critique i see.

@14
Love it! I just did the WOD for a test run and I saw his score I laughed, and that was before I saw Annie and linvy go at it. I think dr. Dimp lick must have been multiplying his score in stead of adding it.

Comment #23 - Posted by: BoBBy at March 13, 2013 8:06 PM

Backed off to pace myself but had energy in tank at end. Will try again aiming for 6-7
Good one!

Comment #24 - Posted by: hatzi at March 13, 2013 8:17 PM

Gee, I sure hope my judges are just as blind, I mean lenient, as Annie's judge. great effort and work, but it's becoming more and more obvious that the recognized names get the most lax judging. XFit HQ, can you guys watch that video and honestly say that those were all good reps?

Comment #25 - Posted by: ross at March 13, 2013 8:26 PM

Nice job Julie @ Comment # 14, I totally agree lol, its comical.

Comment #28 - Posted by: Kevan at March 13, 2013 8:36 PM

#12 Erik -- you are right to be concerned. Although this is a concern, I would say if you do them like Julie in the video that would be fine.

They issue with rupturing the Achilles is those athletes that want to rebound explosively immediately after landing from a jump down. So basically that is 15 plyometric jumps per round and if you are getting into 10 plus rounds it can be an issue. If you have built up to that (i.e 150+ explosive foot strikes) you'd be fine .... but if this would be a lot more than you are accustomed to then I suggest you perform them with a step down. Bottom line ... not a fire breather at CrossFit = step down.

In terms of performance if you are resting due to fatigue at any point then the step down doesn't slow you down and it saves energy. Even a step up might be as quick IF you are having to rest at times. There is a reason your car gets better mileage on a highway than in town -- acceleration (i.e. jumps versus step ups) burns more energy!

Comment #29 - Posted by: Tony Leyland at March 13, 2013 8:50 PM

I agree, looks questionable as to whether or not Annie was clearing the shoulders.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Scott Andresen at March 13, 2013 9:53 PM

I'm going to have to agree with the haterz on Annie, it seemed to me like she was given a couple 'warnings' on those deadlifts, but never no-repped, come on now. The elbow extension on the shoulder presses was also suspect on a couple of those.. with that being said, they were both insane.

Comment #32 - Posted by: Sean M at March 13, 2013 10:58 PM

Overhead press these days is an issue....bone spurs and bulging discs..... I really can't go very heavy anymore. Any suggestions? Thx

Followed by 15 air squats (no box)

Comment #38 - Posted by: ChuckB55/5'11"/165 at March 14, 2013 3:38 AM

There is no question that Annie was no repping a majority of her deadlifts, a bunch of the overheads, And finally got called out on her box jumps.

No questions that she's a beast. But Boz being the head judge, and the instructor for the money grad judges course, you would e left him to maintained the clearly articulated movement standards. A few no reps early would have sorted all that out, instead of staring at her and ignoring the blatant no rep.

I had some clients watching it live with me and it took a lot not to yell at the monitor. But why wouldn't she. If you don't get called out then it must be acceptable.

I was disappointed to see that display of standards considering the 138000+ people registered Nd the millions watching wanted to see the best to at it

Comment #39 - Posted by: Mjack at March 14, 2013 3:50 AM

concur with all concerning comments about annie's no reps. she should have been called out.

Comment #40 - Posted by: Deano at March 14, 2013 3:51 AM

ok, on a second frame by frame look, seems annie was legit. we encourage our competitive crossfitters to make it obvious from across the room, that the movement is legit. Annie "cuts it close", but was nonetheless legit.

Annie is great no doubt.....however, I watched the video all morning and I still see push presses without obvious lockout, deadlifts without the shoulders getting behind the bar at the top and box jumps where she is not standing up before falling off the box......Lindsey got "no rep" a couple of times which slowed her down a little but made her do it correct! Annie did not.....period and it showed. If this was a Crossfitter submitting an online video?????........yeah exactly! Now how is the "standard" going to be upheld for everyone else? I hope people will watch Julie do it instead.....slow down and make sure you meet the standards people! I love CrossFit but the speed over form / standards is getting horrible in my opinion.

anyone know the rule for deadlifts if I am using smaller than standard diameter plates? ie. globo gym 35 pounders? Do i have to go all the way to the floor?

Comment #55 - Posted by: Trevor at March 14, 2013 5:59 AM

4 RDS and 15 reps

Great workout! It caught me by surprise, how difficult it was. Those box jumps were a bit harder than I imagined they would be, coming off the deadlifts. Turns out it takes me a bit of time to go from the dead-lifts to the jumps and then each jump took time also. The jump, stand up, drop down, and then setting back up to jump again took a few second each I think. I know I will have to work on popping back up after the drop, but that will come with time and practice.

I have an idea...let's blast Annie's form...she's only the two time defending champion and was a few points from winning it the time before as well. I think that we have to keep in mind that what we coach and teach at our boxes is for the masses and the "shoulder's back" and "hips fully open" and "full extension" is exaggerated for the benefit of the people who are learning and doing the movements. Those who compete at the highest level of any sport or any thing have to, by necessity, be at the very edge of what is legal. They will not over-extend, they will go to EXACTLY the point that they need to and at times not hit it until called on it. Annie hit the exact point she needed on nearly all of her reps. Boz in not scared to no rep her or anyone else if it is warranted. It was not.

Great job Annie, I know that you made it look much easier that it is by virtue of your incredible work capacity and not because you failed to hit any standards that people watching a video think that you may have.

Comment #72 - Posted by: rob at March 14, 2013 8:30 AM

@53 Drew,

a PDF of the standards is on the main page right after the WOD. hope that helps and it is 95 GL.

Comment #73 - Posted by: Paul at March 14, 2013 8:35 AM

As with every CrossFit workout, please ensure that you are properly warmed up and using the proper technique. Also use caution with box jumps. I am unable to compete this year because I ruptured my Achilles performing box jumps in a WOD a few months ago. Best of luck to all the competitors this year!

Ok Im lying. Truth is i have been doing crossfit for 10 days now. I chain smoked 3 cigarettes on the way to the gym. And was only able to bust out 4 rounds of 115 lb press and deadlift, but only used a 12" box. I thought it would be easy, and it destroyed me. My lungs still hurt. Great workout though. I will improve next time.

Comment #168 - Posted by: kmo at March 14, 2013 8:25 PM

Im glad to see others noticed a leniency with the judging. My friends and I do video submissions for the games, and we got reamed on 13.1. One guy submitted Thurs and got dq'd Sunday one hour before the deadline. Why? Because they said the distance of the video obscured his burpee jump touch. Really?! His wod was 500th for the region. Now he's out. Another had to do it 3x because hq was nitpicking on the videography. Very incidental stuff. So, to see how "permissive" they were to the ladies for 13.2 was shocking. It seems the affiliates get to focus on validation while the video submissions are evaluated for rejection. I'm just saying that you online judges should give the video athletes the benefit of any doubt. We're being judged harsher than everyone else.

Couple of thoughts:
It's getting boring reading a zillion criticisms of all the top competitor's form in the video workouts - we all get it - these people are world-level experts in this sport, and the form requirements as judged by video probably have to be a little more lax in the open since the video angles can be deceptive. When it comes to the games, we'll see good form. To people who falsify their posted performance, you sell your integrity cheaply - no one really cares about how any of us anonymous crossfitters do except ourselves. If you lie to yourself you are a fool. Lastly, I think that master's weights should not be reduced. I may be older and slower, but I can still lift 115 lbs, and I'll be darned if I give anything over to old man time that he doesn't flat out rob me of.

Box jumps were the killer which I didn't expect. Also the new Box jump standard makes you (me) very slow. Much prefer being able to fully extend by jumping off the box.

Actually dropping the bar in between kick started me a bit. The first four rounds I didn't lower to regrip between the first two exercises, so the deadlifts didn't feel right.

I did the Open WOD 13.2 and did WAY worse than I thougth I would. I loved this combination and will definitely be doing this every once in a while to gauge myself. High rep box jumps are still a bit of a goat for me I guess. I'll be introducing them for conditioning rather than DUs.
As Rx: 183
This was easy except the box jumps killed me... I have to work high rep box jumps into my cardio every day or every other to develop better in that higher rep range with the 24" box jumps.
I am stepping too far back off the box too. This makes me have to work a lot harder to go horizontally and veritically, so I have to jump a lot longer.. much more work and less efficient.
This will be a great repetable WOD during the year.
I will also try this with step downs shortly to see how that feels and how the numbers play with that as well.
PP were no big deal and DL were relatively easy as well. I just got gased badly on the box jumps. I spent most of my time there on the box.

I did a different WOD on this Thursday afternoon. I did:
power clean and front squat WOD with some jerks for technique as well
I worked on my technique by doing mostly sets were I would do 1 power clean, into five front squats and then a jerk or two.
In the begining with super low weights, I was doing 1 power clean, then a front squat, and then a jerk or a push press, and I would repeat with front squat and then push press or push jerk for a few rounds.
I think I used:
65, 95, 115, 135, 155, 175 (no jerk with the 175)
I was nursing a nagging back pull so I didn't want to do too much.. I kind of reaggrivated the back pull on the 175 lb set I think.
I did some SUPER high wall balls and DU and wallball adn box jumps as well for practice before and after the workout.
stretched and went back to work.
