This wod should be called "Playtime".
Great article. I have a tattoo of Sisyphus on my back which is a reference to the essay by Camus, and that concept has driven me through many WODs.
"I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain! One always finds one's burden again."
Awesome write up Dr. Jane!
No wall climbs for this guy! Wrist surgery on Tuesday to repair two tears in my wrist :(
what can i substitute for wall climbs and toes to bar?

Just google wall climbs crossfit and become self sufficient instead of asking dumb questions. Also, there is no sub for wall climbs or toes to bar. Just do it or don't!

On Sisyphus:
It should be considered that the existentialist position, or even with the more serious position adopted by Heidegger, is that it assumes or claims to discover that man's end is essentially indeterminate. There are hence no unambiguous true or even unambiguously manifest standards for human excellence.
On the of the things that has been most persuasive about CrossFit is that it begin, in Socratic style, with a publicly available variety of claims to excellence in fitness and sought to adjudicate those claims by inquiry ("What is Fitness?") and looking to practice (competition). This persuasive foundation can only be eroded by the suggestion that human greatness lies not in the excellence of activity but rather in the narcissistic reflection on his own struggles.

28 minutes. I can't do forward rolls, but I did do somersaults into standing up without using my hands (sometimes). Otherwise, as RX'ed. Wall climbs are brutal.

Let's not forget this is a hero WOD. Hearts go out to the Elizalde family for Adrian's sacrifice and their loss in service of our country.
A roll out is the ring muscle up with basically a front filp out right? are there any suggestions for a substitute?
RX: 42:41. First main site WOD. Most wall walks ever done before today 10.
@ Ross - finally I can put my degree in philosophy to use on the comments pages! Your points are valid ascribing Socratic style to the concept of Crossfit, however, many people find the word "narcissistic" a bit harsh even if used correctly. Attribute that to cultural relativism. I liken my last three years or so of loving anguish doing Crossfit workouts to the metaphysical Doaistic principal of trying to harmonise my Will to that of Nature. In other words, Crossfit is a microcosm for all of my (our) struggles in life and the potential ill that could befall any of us day-to-day. Attempting to remain stoic through each WOD and 'embrace the suck' to come out on the other side having metered out some form of order is one of the reasons I do Crossfit. Maybe I have control over the WOD, all too often I do not even when I'm crushing it, but it is this struggle - like that of Sisyphus - that affords a chaotic order to my life.
Just my two cents, love to hear other people's takes....
#24... A forward roll is just a roll on the floor. Check out where it says compare to 120923 for a demo video
Nic a forward roll is also known as a somersault. They have a video explaining how to do it if you follow the "compare to" link. Hope that helps.

First attempt at something even remotely like Rx'd. Everything was there except the jumps, which were at around 24".
Done outside, in the rain at the park. Had to run about 100m between "wall" climbs (against a wet palm tree) and the T2B. Climbs were the most difficult, and after 2 rounds I thought I may not be finishing. 2 turned to 3,4,5... and there was no stopping then!
Finally: 30:21. Wow. This was HARD, but FUN!
Adrian... I remember your sacrifice, and am thankful for my good health, and the opportunity to take on these challenges.

But this is my first attempt at this WOD.
43:58
The walk from the area I had set up to the pull-up bar cost me a minute to a minute and a half each round. The wall climbs were a lot harder than I thought. The forward rolls cost me a bit of time, I got a cramp or something in my wrist that took a bit of time and adjustment. Also I had to set up some portable mats to do the rolls on and those kept moving around while I was rolling. The box jumps and toes to bar were not difficult this time. I think if I could find a closer area next time, I could shave quite a bit of time off.

The appeal to Camus as a starting point for philosophical reflection on CrossFit is certainly thought provoking, and I enjoyed reading the piece very much.
But existentialism, at least for me, doesn't offer a robust framework for understanding CrossFit in part because it disallows the very kind of meaningful universe and individual agency necessary for CrossFit to make sense.
Unlike Sisyphus, CrossFit athletes can improve their lot, improve their general fitness, through their own decisions and actions. The CrossFit prescription assumes through an observable, measurable, and repeatable exercise regime, certain propositions about a rationally ordered universe as well as what it means to be a human being.
One such assumption, I believe, is that health (fitness) is a good in and of itself. Health is not good for some humans and not for others. It is good for all humankind. It's something that makes us human. It needs no further justification.
But health is not a fixed point and not all humans are healthy. CrossFit assumes, however, that all humans can work toward health, that they can improve their wellness lot and become fit.
In this way, individual CrossFit athletes are not so much involved in a daily Sisyphean grind without meaning but a general course of self-improvement with the promise of becoming who they are. I do agree, however, that like Camus' Sisyphus, CrossFit athletes are indeed happy.

It would be hard to describe the delight being able to do 63 30" box jumps in a WOD, only because I wouldn't have thought it was possible even as a 42 year old when I started CF. Have completed WODs when I was totally gassed, and could still do 30" box j, slowly but non-stop. Friggin' love that!

I did 4 rounds of: 10 24" box jumps + 10 wallballs with 20# ball as fast as possible.
I then did 5 dumkbell one arm snatches followed by high box jumps for 5 reps. Sometimes I would do 4-5 high box jumps adn then do 10 wallballs as well.
I stretched a ton since my calf is still a bit pulled, and my right hip was killing me. I did feel like I had a ton left in the tank, but I was working on starting back on DUs which felt o.k. for the first time in almost 2 weeks, and I wanted to play with box jumps and wallballs, both of which I have not done in a while since my calf and hips.
