Should i scale the weight to a lower weight to finish all 30 reps without stopping? or keep the weight and take breaks as needed?
Great Job at 810 CrossFit.
Great experience at 810 CrossFit this weekend!! I am excited to use everything I learned. Joe DeGain is an amazing coach! Abi Grove helped me with my muscle up progression! Thank you!
I have taken a lot of courses and certifications in the fitness world and nothing compared to this at all. Mike G., Keith, JP Joey and Karianne were absolutely incredible. Kept my attention which is hard to do. I am proud to say that I am going to be part of the CrossFit family and glad I got to meet these incredible instructors to start my CrossFit journey. Thanks again guys.
awesome time during the L1 at Peak 360 in Miami, FL.
Thanks to all the coaches for spreading the knowledge!
Oddly enough I did Grace on the weekend
as RX'd for 5:45
The Hampton roads crossfit level 1 staff was amazing it was one of best experiences I have had. Joe Alexander is one of greatest trainers I've ever met! 3...2...1...break

Thank you Erik, Dave, Connor, Chase, Sarah, Zac, and Eric! Great weekend in Houston with all of your energy and knowledge. You all make a great team!
Any thoughts on dropping the weight from overhead after reps? Seems to me that controlling the weight back down to the ground is a large part of the exercise.
Amazing Crossfit Coach's Prep Course in Dallas, Texas! Probably the best Crossfit course I've taken. I am returning to my gym with a bag full of new tools and teaching skills to perfect. And to those who are thinking of taking it, don't hesitate. It was well worth it! I would recommend going over your Level 1 manual before the course to brush-up on the points of performance of the 9 basic movements. I wish I would have done that before the course. Finally, thanks to the instructors! You guys were just awesome!
This was our work out on Friday,
35kg 4:31min. After getting this time regret not going for RX!
Next time though!
@ jon comment #1:
look under the wods: "use 95 pounds, 65 pounds or broomstick as needed"
as for breaks, well depending on YOUR individual fitness, rest as required but gee have a good crack at it ! note your time and poundage, then next time this wod comes up compare that result to your last result.
that's the beauty of crossfit - measurable results ! hopefully you'll pr on subsequent attempts at all wods, good luck and 3,2,1... go!
3:00 flat
Pr'd by 40 sec. Wanted so bad to be under 3 min.
@Jon #1: You want a weight that allows you to do a good chunk of the reps without stopping, but maybe not ALL of them. Aim for something that lets you do 15-20 straight through, and then the last couple fairly quickly after that.
@Jim #11: To each his own, but the whole point of olympic weightlifting is that it lets you lift weights that are heavier then you should be able to control easily. If you're able to have a controlled descent on every rep, you might consider increasing the weight.
Amazing article Pat Sherwood! Love it!
Yesterday did 30 reps at 155
2:25
in January did Grace
1:32 rx
jim - please dont call this olympic weightlifting, oly weightlifting is a specific competition with specific rules and is a test of your ability to put a max weight overhead within those rules, this is a movement pattern of getting the weight ground to overhead in an efficient manner to suit the aim of the wod, if crossfitters stopped trying to compare this to oly lifting maybe they would not get so many hatters on this matter - i have no probs with these workouts using these movements but it simply is not olympic weightlifting
Is it wrong for me to be turned on by this video? Just saying!
A big shout out to all the trainers and CrossFit Hampton Roads. Thanks for a great seminar and all the help. You all do CrossFit proud!
Houston level 1 cert...... Had a great time..... Can't thank the staff enough... Took the time to work with me after class to get that extra knits and crannies out!!!!! Learned a lot can't wit to help others achieve there goals
#1 if you can do the Rx weight for more than one rep at a time then I say do the WOD Rx. These WOD are a great bench mark and the sooner you can do them Rx the better you will be able to track your progress.
If you can't do the Rx weight I suggest pick a weight that you think you can get 10 reps unbroken and then plug away at it till you get to 30 reps.
Good luck!
I love any workout w/ oly lifts in it. 1:30 RX'd. A definite PR for me.
#15/Kenny: Tks...and agree with dropping when doing heavy weight at low reps...but this is a 30 rep set. If CF's point is whole body, functional exercising...well, just dropping the weight isn't functional, and misses out on much of the lift's potential work.
That said, I don't know the answer is...wonder what CF's position is.
This weekend was better then thought it would be . Karianne and her gym was an awesome environment to be in ! All the instructors from mike g jp joey Keith Jason , all tore it up ! There knowledge was incredible! It was a kickass weekend and inspiring ! I can't wait to better my skills and continue my knowledge with crossfit ! Pumped that I got to go to morristown ! I recommend anyone interested in taking a sick ass course go here
Great time at the crossfit kids course at CrossFit Chicago.
I have taken several CF cert courses and the CF Kids cert taught by an Elite team: John, Kelly, Keegan and Eric this weekend at CF Chicago was amazing! I came away from there armed with tools to not only help shape children's lives but also practically useful tools for training adults as well! I believe every trainer can gain physical and resourceful tools to increase their capacity as coaches and athletes by taking the CF Kids cert course! Great job and thank you for the great perspective and opportunity.
Jim/Kenny - CF's position on dropping vs. lowering the weight (if I may be so bold) is that you should do whichever one allows to you do more work faster.
Power output!
Houston level 1... I would like to send some shout outs to "The Red Shirts" and our host over at Crossfit EADO. Thank you guys so much for the knowledge and the experience, and can't wait to put it in play...
I had a great time this weekend at Crossfit Peak 360. The coaches where awesome , I got tons of information and coaching skills and I would like to thank them all...
Danny,Jonny and Denise are legends of the coaching game. Great time at the Level 1 in Auckland NZ. Boom
Big thanks to Danny, Denny and Jonno for the Auckland CF-L1 course at CFNZ. Great coaches, great content and great weekend learning the fundamentals of CF. Plus super interesting stories about international football!

Great weekend at Crossfit Colosseum! Great push everyone!
Sumner WA Level 1 Cert WAS AMAZING!
Kurtis and the team were beyond incredible.

Great job Erik, Sarah, Connor, Chase, Zac, and Eric! Had the best time getting coached by you
! Erik, you are one of the best presenters I had the pleasure learning from!
CrossFit certification at Rainer CrossFit was amazing! All the instructors were terrific, incredibly knowledgable, and really fun to hang out with! :-) I learned a lot and can't wait to put it all into action. Thanks guys and see you for my next certifications!
The L1 course @ Peak 360 was incredible! I couldn't have asked for a better group of trainers... They were so informative and gracious in sharing extra knowledge and personal time to ensure all of our questions/concerns were addressed! Not only was it wknd full of information, but they made it a lot of fun too. A big thanks to FlowMaster Chuck, J.Mac, Leah, Jenni & Maggie... You guys are the best!!!
Crossfit certification at crossfit new zealand was amazing.
Danny, denise and Johnny were awesome coaches and mentors you guys made the experience awesome.
I learnt alot and have now opened my eyes up to crossfit and I cannot get enough now I really recommend this to anyone who is wanting to further your knowledge about crossfit or even getting into training others using the crossfit method.
Met some amazing people in our class and wish you all the best guys.
Amazing weekend at Rainier CrossFit! Thank you Kurtis, Todd, Tommy, Austin, Kevin, Rick and Jesse! It was like drinking the kool-aid all over again! Next time our paths cross, Jesse, I will do a muscle-up for you with no assistance! Thanks So Much!!
Just finished level 1 course at crossfit ethos. It definitely was worth my while, learned things I didn't even know I could use help on. Awesome seminar staff! Miranda is a badass
Great job to the trainers at the Crossfit Colossuem L1 course, Eric, Matt, Chris, Jason, Dave, Patricia and Sharon! It's was a great experience working with all of you.
Eric O'Conner we got trails eh!!!!
Thanks again Keith Ferguson
I HIGHLY recommend the Crossfit kids course to anyone and everyone!! I can honestly say that after the CrossFit Kids Cert with John, Kelly, Eric and Keegan at CrossFit Chicago, I have left with a WEALTH of knowledge AND not to mention it was a BLAST!! They have taught me to really think outside the box when coaching. As adult trainers we tend to over-think things and with this course you learn quick, fun ways of keeping it simple and direct. The Games we played were incredibly FUN (I think I giggled the entire time). I am beyond excited to apply all of what I learned from this extremely passionate group! They have inspired me in more ways than one and most importantly reminded me of why I love Crossfit so much. It has changed my life positively and it excites me to know that I can do the exact same for our youth. There is nothing more rewarding than that! Thanks to my amazing CF Kids coaches! I hope I'll be able to impact just as many lives as you all have!
L1 course couldn't have been a better experience! Ranier Crossfit was such an excellent place, and the coaches were great! Thanks for all your time Kurtis, Jesse, Todd, Austin, Tommy, Rick, and Kevin! - You've taught me so much!

Thanks Rainier Crossfit for hosting such a fun and informative training session. Definitely a great weekend with incredibly knowledgeable and personable trainers! Had an awesome time!
The L1 certificate course at Peak 360, so much to say about this weekend. From the very start, everyone on staff was very friendly.
Chuck: What an articulate speaker! His humor and attitude made it really easy for us to connect with him and he simplified all the information to easily understandable terms.
Jennie: She is the Cue Queen. She made funny names for cues that made the learning process easier to handle. On top of that, she was really hands on and made sure everyone understood or got a movement at her station.
Leah: Quite possibly one of the best coaches I've ever met. Despite doing a million and one examples of each movement without as so much as grunt, once she got up for her lecture it was 110%. She was so descriptive and had so much knowledge to share, there wasn't any question she couldnt tackle.
JMac: Great attitude and had a great personality. He had so much information on nutrition and he was packed with a plethora of science terms to expand on. His cues for the squat were right on target and gave us a LOT of different verbal, tactiles, and tools to use to improve movements.
Maggie: Great box owner with a really keen way of explaining complex movements. When she was explaining the Kipping pull up and told us to lay down on the floor and shoot into a bridge on the floor it was an instant light bulb for so many people in the group. She also gave us loads of insight on the medicine ball clean and how to program with a purpose.
Jessica: She was spot on for helping us become better coaches. Didn't have any movement sessions with her, but during the workouts and the muscle up drills she really helped in giving us better ways to cue by asking us questions on scenarios. "What would you tell her in order to get to transition into the top of the muscle up."
Frank- Barely spoke to him, but he constantly went around the circle groups to give us cues to engage our core, better our postures, lean back, activate our shoulders - he was always there when we needed to fix something and I appreciate that.
All in all, I am overly satisfied with the CFL1 course. I didn't expect that much material to be covered so extensively in only two days. Thank you Crossfit for providing us with great information and quality coaches to help us understand it.
Thanks to all the coaches at Rainer level 1 cert you guys are awesome. It was my first time in a "box" type working environment and you guys made it an incredible experience I learned so much by the great coaching which was easy yet effective and really showed how great these trainers are thanks for everything
Rainier CrossFit and CrossFit Seminar Staff (Kurtis, Todd, Tommy, Austin, Kevin, Rick and Jesse): You are excellent ambassadors for CrossFit. My favorite L1 lesson was the kipping, appreciated the coffee in the mornings, and look forward to my next CrossFit seminar.
Awesome experience at the L1 cert in Michigan this past weekend. Thanks Abi for the help with the strict muscle up progression!

Grace ~ 4:44 using 45 KG barbell
Because I have metal plates instead of rubber ones and I work in an easily damageable gym, I had to lower the bar to the ground from the overhead position after each rep. Toward the end I would just drop it and catch it right before it hit the ground, totally throwing my back out. Just goes to show, you can maintain perfect form for the clean and jerk portion, but if you don't lower the bar correctly, you can still get yourself in a world of pain. Word to the wise.

Had an amazing time at CrossFit 810 L1 this weekend. Joe DeGain and his box were the perfect hosts. The energy and enthusiasm each of the coaches brought all day was contagious. It was evident they were all very knowledgeable and passionate about CrossFit and bettering the community. Thank you to Abi, Rudy, Mel, Doug, Joe and Lindsey and also to Kyle and Jen who were under the radar, but a huge help during the breakouts. Good luck everyone!
Awesome Level 1 course at CF Hampton Roads. Thanks to Joe, Chris, Sara, Courtney, Nicole, and Sarah for leading us throughout the weekend. I learned a ton and met some great people; except for some chick named Fran who kicked my butt...again.

Incredibly awesome learning experience at Crossfit Colosseum. I mean, it was taught by the ONLY man to smoke Spaeller during the 2008 crossfit games trail run, can't beat that....... You can't so don't try.
Thank you Eric, Jason, Patricia, Matt, Chris, Dave and Sharon. You guys form a unique blend of teaching styles and personalities making for some solid learning across broad time and modal domains. Heyooooooo!
The weekend went by in flash but I learned a ton and met some great people. Shout out to Mario (pretty sure on the name but could be wrong), it was his first dabble into crossfit and he took on Fran like a warrior. Very inspiring.

Peak 360 L1: An amazing training course over the weekend! The coaches/instructors/staff were amazing. They had tons of knowledge and experience they were willing to share with everyone and spent quality time answering any questions people had. Great job all around and an amazing experience!
Crossfit STRONG!
Wow, what a FANTASTIC coaching staff and a great group of people to work with. A big thank you to Chris, Nicole and Austin, each one of you pushed me and challenged my thinking in different ways. So inspirational. It has been a while (too long) since I have been coached at my coaching as well as coached as an athlete. Fantastic experience, highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to step it up a level! Dig deep! Be relentless.
Dominque, I enjoyed cleaning with you! :)
Great Job 810 CrossFit L1 Course. The instructors were excellent. The weekend went by extremely fast. For the large group it seemed that we received a lot of personal attention. Abi, Lindsey, Mel, Kyle, Doug,Rudy and Joe were fantastic. Looking forward to seeing everyone again soon and cheering for our instructors at the games!

Thanks for everything Joe and company!
I learned a TON at the Coach's Prep course at CrossFit Strong in Dallas this weekend. I coached this morning and found myself using actionable cues immediately. Crossfit Level 1 Trainers Course MIAMI!
Bar none the best course and coaching I have ever had the honor of being a part of. Extremely knowledgeable, hard working, dedicated, and honest group of coaches/people I have ever met. Chuck Carswell is an amazing director, leader, and coach. Ran a tight ship while having a great time and a few laughs. As for the rest of the seminar staff (Johnny Mac, Maggie, Leah, Jenni, Jessica, and Jorge), only one word can describe them, extraordinary! I could go on and on forever. I can truly say that this course and team of coaches has changed my life! I can't thank them all enough. Thank you.

I've been doing crossfit for about a year and I still can't get over Wods like Isabel; to me it seems like a bit of a bad idea. To do 30 reps as fast as possible of an extremely technical lift i see a recipe for bad form and injury.

Amazing experience at the CrossFit Kids Course at CrossFit Chicago. First of all the facility was top notch and the hosts were awesome (well done Rudy T)! All the coaches were amazing and truly knew their stuff. The material and curriculum is well thought out and is a testimate to CrossFit HQ's continued drive to be better.
When considering taking this course, one should not view it as Kids course. There are several instances where a good trainer and coach can take the ques, thoughts, and methods presented, and apply them to our "adult" classes.
If you are looking to make yourself a better trainer, owner and or person, and are debating about what specialty course to take next, I can't think of a better one!
L1 cert at Crossfit Morristown top notch this weekend. Great presentation of the basics, knowledge and coaching techniques of Crossfit. Mike GGGGGGGG... and crew... great work. Great CF Kids cert this past weekend at my own gym Crossfit Chicago. The trainers: John, Kelly, Keagan and Eric were awesome.
I already used some of the progressions/suggestions during the cert in the adult class that I coach on Monday mornings. The information is great for starting or honing a kids/teens program, but so many of the points/cues and information can be applied to your adult level classes. Great work to the trainers!

CrossFit Strong Coaches Prep Course: AMAZING! The more I learn, the more I realize I need to learn MORE! I got to come home with so many new tools, cues, and confidence in my abilities. Thanks for a great seminar!
My only suggestion is to give out a shirt. I know - this seems minor - but we're CrossFitters, and we're competitive. I think about it like a college degree. Most people have a Bachelors degree, so people get a Masters or a PhD to set themselves apart from the crowd. In our case, those who take the Coaches Prep Course also want to set themselves apart from the masses of people with a Level 1 - and I want a shirt to wear proudly. =)
Thanks for a great weekend!

Awesome weekend at Crossfit Morristown. Mike G., Karianne, Joey, Keith, & JP were top notch. They presented everything in a clear & concise manner while making it FUN & totally engaging. I was nervous going in & they instantly had me smiling, at ease, & ready to take it all on. All in all, an excellent seminar! Thanks!

I've been doing cross-fit for a little over a year and I feel the same way you do. High repetitions for time of powerlifts, especially one as form intensive as a snatch, is a recipe for injury. It seems to me to be a surefire way to throw off form and increase the likely-hood of injury.
I know olympic-lifts and powerlifts are two separate things but I throw cleans, jerks, snatches, squats, and deadlifts in the same category.

"As fast as possible" does not = so fast you hurt yourself. The concept of "possible" includes safety and common sense... The latter being a quality sorely lacking, it seems, among some folks. If you feel you might injure yourself...slow down, lower the weight, or STOP.

"please dont call this olympic weightlifting, oly weightlifting is a specific competition with specific rules and is a test of your ability to put a max weight overhead within those rules..."
I fail to see why it's a problem to refer to Grace and Isabel as oly lifting WODs. By your logic, a competitive oly lifter's daily workouts don't qualify as oly lifting. Oly lifting is not just competition; it's also used in training. And training can have differnt movement standards from competition.

I'm a former D-1 athlete I finished up my sr. year this past season. I have had years of high level S&C coaching. Not everyone has, or has an understanding of their body the way a competitive athlete does. My point is that if you combine high repetition, technical powerlifts, for time, and in a competitive environment inevitably you will have some percentage of the participants lose form and having a higher risk of injury.

Grace
7:34 (Last time 7:15)
Pages myself to one rep every 15 seconds last time which worked obviously better than going all out like today.
Skitour in the morning to Wendelsteinhaus, 930 Hm, 1 hour 45 minutes for the ascent.

I wanna acknowledge the Crossfit Morristown Level 1 Trainers. They were absolutely amazing and provided such great instruction! I wanna do it again, I learned soo much from them!
The Course at the CrossFit Colosseum was amazing! Great staff, and great environment for learning. An awesome course all in all and I look forward to taking the course again in 5 years time.
12 minutes at 95 pounds. I took four breaks.
Grace RX'd
1:59 PR
Previous PR was 3:10....I am PUMPED with that sub 2 Grace.
I have been doing a lot of EMOM of moderately heavy to heavy (for me) power cleans. Example: EMOM for 10 min- 3 PC @ 215# or 2 PC @ 235# or 1 PC @ 255#. Doing one of these types of sets once a week is definitely the cause of my extreme drop in my Grace time.
Grace- 5:37 (cast iron plates; no dropping) PR

2 min pr.
I used to always look at "Grace" and there were a lot of negative thoughts. I scaled it to 65lbs since I'm just getting back into CrossFit, but I was pretty pleased.
Grace
scaled to 65
Time: 4:23
Next time I'm hoping for extra 10-20lbs and under 6 minutes. Will revisit this in a month.

8:52 - sq cleans.
Did sq clean thrusters for first 10 & last 5. Didn't really mean to to start with, just happened, so went with it. Felt tech decent on cleans, effort just not real good. Took too long on jerk & dropped weight after each rep. Good job getting shoulders forward & up on catch.
5/8/09: 11:23-Squat cleans.

Did 5 unbroken ring dips today (new PR). Couldn't do any at all when I got the rings (about 4 weeks ago).
4:30 65 lbs, def need to work on technique, believe that was my limiting factor

Previous time was 10:23. It is amazing how much your breathing can hinder you. I need to run more I guess. Either way, squashing my PR by almost 3 minutes is very encouraging!
