"Andy's Muscle-up" with Dave Castro - video [wmv] [mov] [HD mov]

Ha! Skilled in every position. Hilarious.
A pistol + 135 lb OHS + standing on stone= insanity
Oh and throw in doing that in OLY shoes for good measure. You know, just for fun.
That athlete is amazing. Glad the overhead pistol squat on atlas stone has never came up on the main site wod.
I'd say the risk vs. reward ration is a bit jacked up in your photo Mr. Bruce.
Great job Andy!! You're not such a bad coach Castro!
Love that photo! I might have tried that in a previous life.
But somebody show us the photo from 3 seconds later!
David T.
(Heading down to Tampa Sunday; WOD at CrossFit813 Monday at 0600; The 23rd box I've visited)
Is someone saying something with all these snatches?
I've dialled 9 and 1 already, I have my finger hovering over the final 1
awesome job Andy! many of us wish we could do that on our first try

Looks like a pretty good way to hurt yourself.
So I suppose we should all stop walking up/downstairs too right? This is a pretty lame way of trying to complain about people having bigger balls than you. Of course it's a risky movement and of course not everyone should be doing it but its the fact that there are people skilled enough to do these things that we should focus on. I think breathing and eating should also be held under a microscope too... You can never be too safe ;)

I dont know why people are thinking this is dangerous? Atlas stones move slowly and overhead anything is easy to bail from. And even if he does fall he'd probably try again!
I can't do double unders or snatch for sh#t. But I'm your huckleberry.
Why? Why does CF post photos like this? Why promote something like this? What does this prove?
This doesn't promote the sport positively. You're just inviting people of all skill levels to do things that simply don't make any sense and have zero purpose.
Stop it please. The sport is better than this.
anyone who thinks that isn't dangerous is an idiot, i have been there and doing something similar until a simple fall shatterd my radius into hundreds of little pieces, all respect for people with this sort of balance but i dont believe its something we should portray that the everday person should " have a go at" like it is by being shown like this
Comment #19 - Posted by: Mickey at February 22, 2013 7:07 PM
Sack up buttercup.
Why Why Why?
For the same reason that the main site WOD is posted at such high degree of difficulty. To set the bar high and then people scale as appropriate.
Is everyone complaining about the risky balance move also doing the WODs completely as prescribed? I think not. I think 80% of population (or more) scales their workout and know that they need to do so to avoid killing themselves. There is no shame. Be real. But aim high with a vision.
So, just because some picture looks inspirational and epic doesn't mean we should all (more mortals though we are) attempt to replicate. Without scaling.
Duh?
All you whiners need to suck it up. I can think of 1,000 things in sports more dangerous than what he's doing. How about jumping out of a hot air balloon and falling faster than the speed of sound? No, you're right, standing on a stone 16 inches above the ground is much, much worse.
Last year they posted a photo of someone doing the same thing on a kettlebell and people where going nuts like they are now. I think this photo illustrates exactly what crossfit is about. Risk, I guess I never should have played football, wakeboarded, snow skied, or any other sport that involved risk. I would say just about any movement we do in crossfit is dangerous if you do not have the skill to do it and this athlete obviously has more than enough.
Andy gets a Muscle up on his second attempt?? That's AMAZING!
Andy gets a muscle up on his second attempt. Watch out Rich.
good article on "feet first"
Not only did Andy bust out a muscle up he dang near did an iron cross. Sign that guy up, put a little meat on him and its Masters 2014.
You know this will be on the CrossFit Games.
Both jealous and happy for Andy's first muscle up..Good job! I'm happy for you. I'm still working on my first muscle up. The picture is amazing. good job! I appreciate your ability--I know I won't ever try it, nor do I ever aspire to, but I've got your back! Keep it up!
I have no problem with this photo. I do crossfit to challenge myself to be better and try harder. Keep it in perspective, you know what you are capable of. I will never be able to do what he's doing on that photo but I'm 45 years old and crossfit has gotten me into better shape than I've probable been in for 15 years. I kick ass on some wods and some not so much.
Thanks for the love. Just to be clear The picture and movement have been something I saw online and I have been working on for a couple months. It also took over an hour of bails that night to get one clean rep in. It's just another dumb thing I have in my bag of "cf parlor tricks". Be safe everybody
Finally got rings in the home gym about 2 weeks ago. Been trying to learn the muscle up ever since.
I watched the video of Andy doing a muscle up.
I did my first muscle up this morning

i think everyone should just calm down and appreciate the picture. no one is telling anyone to do what nick did (bdw kudos mate).
crossfit is all about the community and camaraderie guys. so please dont forget that. For me crossfit is not the fact that rich won the games 2 years in a row, its the fact that after each workout he edges all other competitors on. the true spirit of crossfit.
keep it real guys. focus on the workouts and not the pictures. love.
For the next main site pic I'd like to see a person doing a handstand and then another person performing a 225lbs OHS on top of the person doing the handstand. That would be the ultimate.
Wow. Just wow. I find all of CrossFit inspirational. Everything in Life worth anything involves Risk. It's always about digging deeper to become better. There will always be those few individuals that inspire all of us to reach higher. Thank you for your courage :)
Hollyhog i disagree nowhere in crossfit definition of fitness is risk stated. crossfit is to increase work capacity over broad time modal domains. if someone wants to do a pistol on an atlas stone go for it. Smart move I dont know, and dont really care and am not sure why everyone else does either. How bout the guy doin muscle ups from a hot air ballon? Its all in what ya want.
8:17
All rounds with 165 snatch.
DUs were good through 4 rounds then got sloppy. Good workout.
The muscle up video is great - way to go Andy! But please tell us you have some type of background (maybe not Crossfit) that may have prepped you for the strength and grip required!? Otherwise - that is both an inspirational and demoralizing video at the same time!
Agree with the post above - get him into Crossfit and aim for 2014 Masters.

The knock on CrossFit is it is dangerous. This helps them make that point.
One slogan is don't work out today in such a way that it prevents you from working out tomorrow.
It only takes one second to take an impressive pick. He probably dropped it right after that shot.
Andy, muscle up on your first try. Awesome!
sigh on the cry babies, haters, & safety police. And if you are going to respond to this comment about how awesome you are and how you aren't a hater post some loads behind it

To those of you complaining about the picture, did you also complain when they posted the video of Rich snatching 300lbs? That is also dangerous IF YOU AREN'T READY FOR IT!! As he posted, Nik worked towards this for quite some time and only attempted it once he felt prepared. I actually think that sets a great example and is exactly what CF is about.
Additionally, I appreciate that HQ respects our intelligence enough to assume that we won't go running out to try something like this but rather will use it to motivate ourselves to keep working and getting better.
Have a great day, WOD and weekend!

Hoooah Army Crossfit!!!
I've done this before--If you focus your concentration on keeping the nerf ball from moving out from under your foot and the broomstick directly overhead, it's a cinch!
Balance, Agility, Strength, Coordination.........Do these Characteristics sounds familiar to anybody? To me this move is all about what CrossFitters do.
Oh, and I'm calling B.S. on that Muscle Up Mr. Electrician Guy. That just looked to easy for his first one......haha!
single unders and a 150PR
As much as I try to convince people that CrossFit is NOT dangerous, I have to admit that one of the things that first brought CrossFit to my attention a few years back was an article basically talking about how dangerous it was. It was talking about how extreme the "cult" was and how intensely CrossFitters would work out- sometimes to the point of "meeting pukie"".
I honestly thought, "Hell, that sounds like it might be a pretty good way to become a badass", and I checked it out.

Question: I have been doing Crossfit for 2.5 years with the first year at a box ... and the last 1.5 years from my garage. I notice from time to time I find myself doing a shortened warm up. The box had the warmups on the board. Any thoughts of including proper warmups are part of WOD post? If not, can other Crossfiters suggest a standard warmup?
Thanks

Why do people do overhead pistol squats, climb mountains, run ultramarathons or skydive? Because its there and its a challenge and it compels us to be more than what we are. It's called being human. Walls, like barriers, are meant to be broken.
Nik, I think that's crazy...and I admire you for it. I'll never do one or try one, but to all o' ya'll sniping about safety or bad examples or circus acts, nothing great is done nor barriers broken by people working inside the bounds of the normal. Jeesh.

Truth be known, everything is DANGEROUS.....Why not try this? Looks challenging and one more thing to master. What about the X-games, extreme bungie jumping, sky diving from space, swimming with shark, etc. Get a grip, man up or woman up and try something outta your comfort zone. Life's short.
The problem isnt that he did the movement, which is very impressive, but the fact that Crossfit is displaying/endorsing it. Even though some of us dont want to admit it, Crossfit is not for everyone. It is for athletes. All it takes is a few impressionable highschool athletes to see it and say "Wow, that looks really cool. Lets go try it!"
Ok im off my soapbox. However, that is a very impressive feat of strength and balance. Not knocking the man, knocking the brand.

Risk vs reward, push boundaries vs stay safe, personal choice of the individual. I think it is awesome Nik!! To me crossfit is exactly what you are doing, pushing yourself, attempting new skills, practicing until you do it right. Every person that has made any negative comment has probably forgotten at one time or another that a new skill they have learned, someone else has called dangerous.
Incredible pic, incredible strength and balance, kudos on the move, wow. Some of our fellow crossfitters really need to relax or we may need to release the flying monkeys.
