Adam, we are all in it for you brother! Kent Ohio loves you, you're our hero, rest in peace and help me through this. Miss you
Sounds like a good one today!
Quick question, what level do you set the rower to? I usually use 10 but was told yesterday that 5 is more like rowing on water?
Thanks
Mark
Mark, the damper setting is a personal preference. But most experienced rowers have it around 4-6. You have to find the right balance between endurance and strength. Damper setting 10: low stroke rate, but heavy; damper setting 1: high stroke rate, bute light. If you need to set it to 10 for your maximum score, your technique needs improvement. Good luck!

Having a brother in the military, it absolutely breaks my heart seeing all of these young, honorable men and women who have sacrificed their lives in order to serve our country. However, I love that crossfit is spreading the word and allowing everyone to participate in a WOD in honor of those who have lost their lives. Adam, I'm sure you were a wonderful man and are smiling down from Heaven right now at your friends, family and all those who honor you. May God bless your family.

CrossFit friends,
There is always room for CrossFit in your schedule. For those of you who are just starting; be patient and you will see results. When you do see results, it's a beautiful feeling like no other. If you think it's a bit tough on you then scale down until you get it right and then work your way up. remember, you have your whole life to get, and keep yourself in good fit shape (including being healthy). That's a lot of time I hope (God willing you live a long life) so that that time to utilize yourself into keeping yourself in good shape, and keeping CrossFit a part of your life style.
Have a good workout everyone.
R.I.P Adam.
Look at his smiling face. It is really so sad. Nice of crossfit to do something to honor him.

Mr. Hamilton (comment #11) - you and your family are in our thoughts, your son will help us all through this! Thank you for your and your son's sacrifice!
If kicking my own a@# during this workout is all I have to do to show respect for a fallen brother, it's the least I can do.

Just missed my 60 min cap.
Subd in 400 singles on jump rope when Achilles tightened at 1st 200 meters.
Subsequent rounds did club bell swipes for 100 (50 per hand) with 20 lb club in place of run. For non-club swingers, the swipe has a similar hip action to the kb swing, but you start with a weighted club pointing at the ground then swing it up and over the shoulder so it's again pointing down. Repeat. Great midline stability move and a grip smoker for sure.

New to crossfit and have done about 5 workouts. Can't decide if I like it or not. Love some of the workouts but a lot of them I think seem like major overkill. Today's workout for example. 3 rounds? For a total of 150 pull-ups? There was another workout I saw one day that had 80 squats, and two rounds of them.
My question to you long time crossfitters is why are many of the workouts so long and demanding? I mean rounds of 80 squats mixed in with a few other exercises seems excessive to me. I really like the workouts that I have done that were "normal" workouts, but I don't know about the others.
Answers, advice?
Stormy,
Every wod is and should be demanding. When starting crossfit however you will most likely want to scale the wods. You can go to "start here" and click on brand x . This will give you several scaled versions of the wod. Most everyone, even ecperienced crossfitters have to scale the reps, weight or both from time to time. The majority of the time a WOD will take twenty minutes or less. However a hero WOD will almost always take around 45 minutes.
M 21/185lb/5'11"
35:27 rx'd
@Stormy, #102: The longer workouts are usually tribute workouts for the Heroes or designed to illicit a muscular/respiratory response different than the shorter, sprint-type workouts. Remember the "constantly varied" part of the CF concept. That includes reps, rounds, exercises, loads, length, duration, intensity, etc. across the spectrum. Hope that helps - and as always, scale to fit your time/fitness level as required while still challenging yourself.
I'm rapidly approaching 1 year on CrossFit and have stuck with it, scaled weights/reps when I needed to and made significant gains in speed, strength and endurance.
My advice is to make a pact with yourself for 6 months or a year (as I did) and see where it takes you.
Hope that helps a bit.

Stormy - For one, I would certainly suggest scaling the wods. The mainsite is for a pretty experienced crossfitter. If you are interested in shorter, more intense wods look up crossfit football. It combines a heavy lift with a shorter wod everyday.

What a WOD!!! Probably the lamest result ever: took me 30 minutes to do the first round and I had to stop. I've been training for a month and get my butt kicked by your WODs every time!! Excellent workouts though.

Thank you for giving the ultimate sacrifice Adam.
My prayers go out to Adams family and friends. Thank you for your sacrifice bro. You helped me push through this one. My 8year old hung out with me and beat me on the last run. This one kicked my butt. Those last few pull ups were a killer.

In the middle of round 2, I thought about scaling but then I considered what this WOD represents. I knew I was physically capable & this young man did so much in comparison.

I will keep you and all my fellow military members in my prayers. All gave some, Some gave all.

I kept getting interrupted by people stealing my rower, so I had to travel a little further to get to a rower, and some needing help or advice, or moving my chalk. I had trouble with the pull-ups, like always. I got faster towards the end with the push-ups and running and rowing, but the pull-ups are my weak spot (they always were my weak spot). I don't know where the time went, cause it did not seem to take that much time since the first round took 15-20 minutes. So I guess the delays were a little more than I thought. The changing of stations I figure cost me allot. Maybe I was running a little further than I was supposed to, I should remeasure for the distances.
As Rx'd - 60:29 (stupid 29 seconds)
I saw a demo vid a while back where a guy said to picture the fallen soldier's face when you start falling behind in the workout; that it'll help you push through. So true.
Great awful WOD. Glad to finish. In memory and honor.
44:55
Snow, ice, and cramping quads slowed down my run.

Runs were tough, sections had consistency of dry sand (snow) while other sections were slippery (ice). Asthma was pretty bad. Ate pistachio's last night. Seems like tree nuts affect asthma. Will start tracking...
Pushups unbroken.

Just tried to stay around 2:00/500 on row. Pushups not bad. Hands near pecs, little wider stance, tried to maintain vertical forearm. Fighting cramps bad on most run laps so that hurt pace. Pullups not bad. Didn't go overboard b/c of shoulder & didn't want to tear hands since no pads. Pushups 15+10+7+7+5+5. Pullups 15+10+10+8+7 mostly. Time on each round consistent - 15 min/round.
RIP Hamilton
