Miss you David, T and I will give this our best tomorrow!!!!
Muscle ups...Crap.
Miss you David! We honor you. This workout is for you.
We are so proud of the honorable man you grew up to be...I will always remember the crossfit workout you "modified" for your mother to keep my body strong. I miss you so much my dear son!
Just curious, is there a wod for Pat Tillman?
#8 - It's actually the West Point class of 2004 motto:
"For Country and Corps"
Mr. Dave,
We miss you coming next door to play with us.
We will never forget you.
What's a good sub for the muscle-ups
Also looking for sub for muscle ups. Just starting out with this.
Miss you, Bro.
Miss the WODs; the great talks while carpooling to work; the late nights mission planning while listening to your "Ignorance" playlists or The Doors (Fred, RIP); the mission handovers on the ramp; "Ghost riding the Rental Whips"; pushing each other (and each other's buttons); celebrating victories and milestones; crashing at your house; hearing your crazy stories with Stan (and then experiencing a few of them); your humbleness, professionalism, and drive; the Brotherhood.

"Pullups and dips. Some have suggested 1 min of both somewhat equates to one muscle-up. Most common substitution is 3 pullups +3 dips, or 4 pullups +4 dips."
A common sub in our box is one burpee pull up for every MU. Good luck!

R.I.P Dave NSDQ .Muscle ups really bet your grining on that one dont laugh to hard when i get a half of one in 45 min .
Miss you Dave. I'm pretty sure you didn't like to run this much in your WODs, though.
You made everyone proud in every aspect of your life.
The most faithful servant I've had the privilege
to call a friend and brother. You served this
country w such pride. You are a hero. Whatever
motto is.. God and country.. Or corps and country..
not real sure, but you defined it. I know you

Skipped the rest day, maybe tomorrow!
we all are sorry for your loss Mrs. Jones
Anyone treadmillers find a reasonable speed for those 800s?
#31 someone's probably going to tell you to run outside, but if not an option I've found that 8-8.5 is a good place to start. I'll increase .5 every 200m-300m, and you may have to decrease at the end of the 800m. Play around with the mph during your warm-up to find what's going to work for you. You should probably think about putting an incline of 1 on the treadmill too. Just my 2 cents. Good luck, 3...2..1.Go!
Thank you to all of Dave's family and friends for commenting - this helps the rest of the Crossfit world remember "Hortman" is not just a ridiculously tough workout to commemorate a fallen soldier, but also that this badass soldier had a family that loved and respected him and misses him. I will do my best to tear this one up even though 800m runs are the absolute worst! Thank you, Mrs Jones, for doing such a great job raising a man for all men to admire.
How special to see the friends, fellow soldiers and even the mother of Captain Hortman posting tonight. Thank you Sir for your service and sacrifice, and thank you all for the sacrifice that you must feel every day in missing such a wonderful American!

No WOD video anymore? What's the deal with that?
The 160th is one of the finest units that I know of. God bless you Night Stalkers!
For the record David's engine failed on his Special Operations Attack helicopter. He was a highly skilled pilot of the most elite helicopter regiment on the planet and is truly missed by everyone who knew him.

Miss you so much man. From your Palmetto Boys State Brother. I expect to see you grinning from up above as all of us suffer. To anyone that didn't know Hortman, the toughest guy I've ever come to know, and yet one of the best leaders, and kindest people too. Involved in so much, and I truly look up to him almost every day as a role model. Don't let me quit!
Tough one! Got three full rounds and everything but one muscle up in the 4th! Couldn't get it at the buzzer.
Treadmill pace was about 8.5 - squats in quick 10s.

Mrs. Hortman Jones, we all mourn for your loss. May you find peace in knowing your son died doing what he loved. I assure you, as a former Marine Attack Helicopter Pilot (who has escaped a crash), your son was where he wanted to be.
Will do this today in his honor, for a brother aviator.
"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."

I HAVE A FUNNY STORY...so i was short on time today and i decided to do "gwen" after a quick warm up at the military gym, i was feeling good like i could get up 135 for my set of nine, i was going to try it for atleast a few reps to see if i could do it but then i got a "talking" by one of the senior NCO's asking with a very sarcastic "are you ok? I dont want you hurting yourself since i keep hearing weights being slamed and alot of grunting...please stop slaming the weights and put them down softly..." then i got who is charge of you and i will have a talk with them speech...needless to say i did not finish my workout and i just left sad that i couldnt finish lol just a note i was not slaming it was just the clank of the weights being set down and i the only "grunting" was the last rep to push for that last rep. Am I wrong for being upset? lol
I feel like I did really well with this. 4 rounds plus 400 meters. As Rx'd. I should of taped my wrists. They are all scabbed up now. Looks like I'm into some S&M stuff!!
RIP Hortman. Thanks to all his family and friends for posting, wish I could offer some comfort.

@ #80
I was at the base gym one time and i was doing a mass amount of kipping pull ups, well i guess in my efforts i didnt realize that my shirt had come untucked in the front and we all know that is a no go by AFI. A over weight major had the nerve in the middle of my WOD to stop me, make me go to parade rest and listen to him grill me even though i had already tucked the shirt back in, i was thinking maybe over weight 3rd pt failure major maybe u should do some hard workouts and see if ur shirt to would come untucked....LOL
RIP Captain Hortman. Thank you, and your family, for your sacrifice. Very nice of you to post Brenda. I wish I had the words to properly express my sympathies.
Low back issue for me today, so I changed to 30 muscle ups for time.

I found a way to do assisted MUs I use a little step on my pull up station to pass that critical point to the dip. My wife saw it and it is better to try an actual MU (I think) than sub's? Just my opinion. That idea came from reading things on this web site. It seemed to fit with the CF philosophy.

First time doing ring muscle ups in a WOD!
The story: So a while ago I decided I'd only do Hero WOD's if I could do them rx'd (I'm not saying this should be the case for everyone) I just decided it'd be the best way for me to really do the workouts justice. So I see muscle ups in the WOD and think "well I guess I'll have a goat day and work on my muscle ups..." before this WOD I had done maybe 5 or 6 in practice (ever). So I set my rings and get one on my first try (awesome), then tried to drop down and kip back up into another one, got a second one (first time ever getting two in a row), try for a third and fail. Get off the rings and think "practice is going pretty good!" Try again, and get another two in a row, absolutely wrapped! Then my wife says "cool so you could do the WOD then?"
So without any further encouragement, 45min clock begins and off I go... Ended up with 3 full rounds + 800m + 40 squats. Within the 24 muscle ups I got, I only failed 3 (all on attempts to chain two together). Each round was also faster than the previous with 14:10, 12:26, and 12:10 being the three splits.
Overall I was wrapped I no longer need to sub for muscle ups and was really happy it happened with a Hero WOD. Thank you John D. Hortman for inspiring someone you never knew from the other side of the world.

That was emotional!

Been out of it way too long. Struggled to do 3 rounds with dip/pull substitutes. Even then I had to resort to jumping pull-ups during the end of round 1. Looking forward to improving.

We, the living, can only make our way as best we can, and make the effort to honor the sacrifice of your son. The path he chose - a path shunned by average men - was fraught with danger, but nonetheless was a burden in need of being borne by strong backs such as John's. I was looking at his picture and thinking he was only a kid, no wrinkles, looks so young. And then I read the post he had died. I started to cry. My 17 year old nephew is going in the Marines soon so when I see a young man in uniform I have to honor them. I pray for his family and friends. May God give you rest.

I was in the Army 24 years ago and just started crossfit about a month ago. I learned about this main site a few weeks ago and have been browsing it on and off. I was surprised and glad to see the close relationship between the military and these intense workouts. I was even more taken by the homage paid to our fallen. Describing all I've read and found out about Capt. John Hortman to my wife found us both in tears. It's nice (and inspirational) to see how crosfit has dedicated workout routines to soldiers like him. Brenda, it seems like your raised a wonderful son. At the end of my wife and my tearfest we looked at each other and said how we would love our boys to grow up and embody the characteristics we have heard others say about your son. When I am able to attempt the Hortman I will be bringing some added emotion and intensity. God bless.

WU - mostly lower body.
4 rounds + run, squats & 7 MU. Decent job pushing, esp on later rounds of squats. Keeping lumbar tight, esp coming out of bottom & weight on o/s of foot helped. Look at horizon & extend arms & rotate elbows out. First 3 MU not bad on later rounds then mostly 1's, some 2's.

I have been dreading this WOD since reading it. I workout in a regular gym and was going to do this a couple of times but the gym was packed and the treadmills were all jammed up, so I couldn't do it.
The big problem was I popped my right calf muscle in my 3rd or 4th round. My calf seized up and was really in pain. I basically stopped and thought it was hurt, and I'm still hoping that it's just sore and/ or pulled a little bit.
I was running much fastere than I thought I would for the first 3 rounds at about 11 or more mph, and the air squats were basically broken up into about 35,30,15. I was not as fast but very little rests on the air squats. I was going FULL ROM with the squats as well. I was doing all the MUs in most rounds as 6+2, and in the last 2 rounds I was doing 5+3 & the last round was 4,2,2. The running slowed me down in the last 2 rounds because of the calf. I was tired for sure but the calf seizing up & the fear of getting hurt slowed me down.
