Perfect. Nice programming guys.
Just registered for the lvl 1 course on April 26-27. I can not wait.
What, no coffee cup curls for the chiefs?
What's up with the wod demo
weird. was going to do this yesterday. today it is then.
@spence #3 - click on the 'compare to' link, demo there
Did this one the other day...
Rnd 1: 5 rnds
Rnd 2: 5 rnds
Rnd 3: 5 rnds + 3 cleans
Rnd 4: 5 rnds
Rnd 5: 6 rnds
Total - 26 rnds + 3 cleans
HQ, I appreciate the fact that the WOD demo is located under the "compare to" link, but re-posting the demo each time a given WOD comes up would likely benefit those who are new to the sport and may not be familiar with the website. Thanks again for the great programming, the coaching, and (perhaps most importantly) the CF community.
Hey guys, quick question! I haven't been doing crossfit for that long and I am still really weak upper body. My max cleans are 40kg or 95 pounds. Wondering what weight I should do this WOD. I'm not into wimping out!! I want to get stronger and I don't want it too be too easy but want to get out of WOD what it was designed for as well.. Excited to do it!!
Sonja
Gotta question, I have a great diet. But I have one vice, beer. Not an Alchie or anything. Just enjoy beer some. Mostly on the weekends. Anyone have any ideas on a beer that's "better" for me diet wise to more readuce body fat?

Great workout. Cleans and pushups where easy the squats where surprisingly the hardest.
Sonja ,
If I was u I would do fifty percent of my 1 rep max. Which would be around 55 pounds. If its to light then you will be able to do more rounds and next time try increasing weight. If your really new to cleans go even lighter and focus and good form then focus on intensity. Just my opinion good luck.
search "The Chief" in the Google Crossfit search box just right of the WOD, you'll find a demo. Now go do some work.
Love the workouts, love the pictures and love extra content each day. So why not have new demo videos each day to see how different boxes are scaling, organizing and running WODs? The value of the demo videos is not just in demonstration, it is also in the sharing of ideas.
That said, HQ I am so happy you brought back the daily scores from top athletes; and the pictures have been fantastic.
Thanks for your hard work!
Perhaps there are some liability worries in posting "instructional" videos now? We do live in the US, where people sue over the length of a sandwich...
Great wod, can't wait to do it....
For those that Zone what do you typically eat before and after a workout and are those blocks included in your daily block prescription. Thanks.
#18,
Can’t really help with pre workout (I just eat a meal about 1 hour before) but post workout I have 3 blocks of protein powder with 2 blocks of coconut water (for the carbs). Yes these blocks do count towards your total daily intake. There was a 3 part video series about this on the main site about six months ago. You might be able to find it in the Journal.
Thanks Bill I will look for that series .

Agree with prior comments on WOD videos - a direct link would be helpful when demo video is in 'compare to' page.
Great video on cueing the push jerk. If its a one-or-the-other deal, I'd take more of those over the WOD videos.
Why are there no WOD demos on Youtube any more. Do you not like us. :(

A true American hero, Chris Kyle, was killed at a gun range in Texas yesterday. The former Navy SEAL, deadliest sniper in US history, had a foundation that attempted to help other former soldiers cope with ptsd. He and another man were shot and killed by one of those they were trying to help. Chris was a great soldier, dedicated husband and loving father. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers.
RIP Brother.

Hope I didn't just jinx it!

Squats were the worst
From what I have seen on other people's posts I did it wrong. I thought we did what we could then rest then pick it back up where we left off. I am fighting a little bug off so I am not sure if that affected me as much as I hope it did. The Power press and squats were not the issue but the pushups after the power press was rough.
I did 12 rounds in the time limit but added another 3 after because that was my goal to do. The break down was something like:
1 x 3
2 x 2+ push presses
3 x 2+ push presses and pushups
4 x 3
5 x 2
add the 3 rounds after I did for good measure, because tomorrow is a rest day.
1) Mantei. New nickname for a buddy whose girlfriend no one's ever met.
2) Dr. Pepper. Some things are not meant to go together. Like cherry juice in beer. From Germany. Or wherever. Bleh.
3) Community. 105 CrossFitters of all shapes and sizes came together for a CrossFit competition yesterday. Pretty high quality stuff, too (3 sub-3:00 "Frans" for example). Even more impressive was the spectator turn-out, some 300 non-competitors crammed into the Box.
The provenance of this particular event actually traces back to a large commercial gym on the West Side of Cleveland where a young personal trainer was intrigued/amused by the antics of a skinny middle-aged guy who was doing crazy stuff like jumping on stuff and banging weights. Seems this old guy had discovered a new fitness program on the internet, CrossFit. The young trainer did one, precisely one workout with the old guy and decided that he'd had enough.
Except he hadn't. He couldn't get enough, actually. Hours upon end spent on the computer watching videos, reading the Forum, trying out WOD's. From there it was a straight line to an L1 with a Box to follow.
The rest is history.
4) Shoot. I am about to shoot a gun for the first time since age 7. My very good friend is taking "The Heir" and me on a hunt later today. It's funny...I've been kinda nervous about guns, about handling them. I'm not really sure how I feel about the whole thing.
I have no gun bias, yea or nay. They've just not been a part of my life. I have no hunting bias, yea or nay. Again, just not a part of my upbringing, not something anyone in my family has ever done. The "Great Outdoors" for us growing up was a golf course or a tennis court, for my own family it meant a mountain with ski lifts.
Grampbingo fought in Korea and said he'd never touch a gun again after mustering out. Fair enough. That certainly didn't translate into an anti-gun household, though; we played Cowboys and Indians and War with all kinds of toy firearms growing up. Every Christmas tree had a gun of some sort underneath.
So why now? On Super Bowl Sunday no less. Well, "The Heir" is accomplished at sporting clays and skeet, and he has been itching to try his hand in the field. As a Dad I'm always interested in activities that draw us together. My friend has been bugging me to shoot with him ever since my golfing days ended. Seems that this shooting thing can be rather social, not unlike golf in that respect. In truth, nothing has replaced the golf course for me when it comes to the camaraderie of a slower paced sport experienced in the company of friends.
Will I like it? Will I form an opinion about the larger, louder gun topics of the day because I went? Will I experience some kind of deep insight into a world about which I've only read, maybe somehow better understand the mindset of a very good friend who was recently arrested for a gun law violation?
Probably not. Likely what I will experience is nothing more of less than a very pleasant, hopefully not too cold afternoon in the company of a good friend who really wants to spend some time, and a son who has asked the same. Company far from the hue and cry and hysteria.
I'll likely enjoy it very much.
I'll see you next week...

Big time PR! Last time I made only 4 rounds each, with a couple of extra reps sometimes. But then, last time I worked out at home were touch and go power cleans with metal plates over wooden floor was no option. Today with rubber plates in the gym I could go all out. In round 4 I had a spectator watching me and had 20 seconds left after 5 rounds so I had to do those extra power cleans. Incorporated foam rollers in my warm up these days, seems to help.

A few things...
firstly @sully regarding beer. Have a few beers once in a while and enjoy them. Make that your cheat. Healthy mind is key in this whole wellness thing too!
Secondly - In regards to the Push Jerk demo. Great video! However, an important point missing regarding the inflexibility of the shoulders. I see more athletes (myself included) missing jerks for this reason than almost any other. This is 100% why the hands are forward in the athletes movement. 2 cents.
As rx'd 22 complete rounds total... Fun one. Push ups and squats were my breaks. Cleans weren't hard but after round 2 and 3 they became.... Lets just say the 135# started to feel more and more like 205..then 210!!! You get the point!! Go niners:)

Haven't done chief in a long time,
The whole KC clan (Di, Big H, Lil H and Coach Bodhi the Wonder Puppy) got in on this one, subbing dumbbells and kbs in for the bar. Using a 1 1/2 pood bell did the following:
7, 7, 6, 6, 5 (4 squats away from completion)
The rest of the family's numbers are sketchy, but everybody worked, nobody quit.
Sully, moderate alcohol consumption has some health benefits, just realize that fat burning stops in the presence of alcohol. This is because alcohol gets metabolized first. If fat burning is a priority then beer should be a cheat day reward only (though dry red wine would be better for you, fewer carbs and more health benefits). An occasional beer won't kill you and is in fact beneficial, just might slow the fat burning part a bit. Might be good to Spartan up for a bit, then break out the beer when you hit a goal. Depends in how much of a hurry you're in. GL!

I am in Japan so about to do this one in a few hours. I have a question I see a lot of people talking about looking up during air squats and I just got done reading starting strength in which it analyzes every aspect of the squat. It says that looking up can strain the neck and that you should acutally look just a few feet in front of you and that doing so will actually improve your form as well. It says you will concentrate on driving the hips first when looking slightly down. Any thoughts about this?

Definitely feeling the lower back issues a few others mentioned.
As for beer, bear in mind that alcohol has almost as many calories per gram as fat (9 for fat, 7 for alcohol, 4 for protein and carbs), that's one of several reasons that you're really better off leaving it out entirely. That being said, if you are going to drink beer, the ones that will be best for "helping" with fat loss (light beers) are generally the ones that are least enjoyable to drink. So you may as well have the ones you enjoy if you're going to drink them at all.
Well, only did this a few weeks back and really didn't manage it as well this time. The previous first WOD of this cycle of 3 still with me from the 90 deadlifts I think!
Great WOD though. Worked on rx'd but fell short with only one cycle of just over 4 rounds. The rest were 3s plus a few.

Today's workout was nice because we weren't given a number of reps to live up to, we were given a time and told "do as much work as possible in the given time." This is an exercise in heart(fighting spirit) just as much a feat of endurance and strength.
Did you choose to end your rounds at an even number, despite having 10 seconds left on the clock? Did you go for that one extra clean just becuase there was time to do it?
It is always best to push through the tired thoughts telling you to "stop," because that is where true strength lies. And don't be discouraged if you couldn't keep up with Lindsay Smith's amazing performance. If you were lying face up on the mat at the end of round five, out of breath, barely able to stand, then you too performed just as well as Lindsay, 6 rounds per set or not.

Seemed like cleans were tough. Lumbar area of back been hurting for awhile. Remembered to focus on good shrug toward.

May have done 4 rounds on second round, but decided to keep count conservative.
Need to do better job w/elbows high & wide & floating bar on cleans. Squats toughest. Lots of burn in back of hips. Depth & tech good though.
Disapp I didn't do better compared to last time.

Great workout HQ!
I felt like I was able to keep up the intensity for the entire WOD. All of our athletes are doing "the Chief" today at 8,750 above sea level.
