Reverse filthy fifty = the clean fifty?
I agree with having to complete an online course to make people an honest judge, but don't it seem like HQ is just doing a crash grab on the VOLUNTEERS pay a fee to volunteer at regionals.
I paid over $500.00 in hotel fees and food, to be a VOLUNTEER JUDGE last year, but I'm just saying. Seems a little overboard on HQ part to milk more money from the volunteers. As we all know without them, these events would not take place.
Come on coach.
Filthy fifty in reverse. Let's see if the burpees suck less at the begining. My bet would be no.
I see what you did there...

Enjoyed the Coach's Prep at CFNZ with Danny and Nicole. Plenty to learn and a lot to remember. A good course to reinforce some of the basics.
What an amazing weekend! Thanks Eric, Austin, Tommy, Jason, and Brett as well as Reebok CrossFit Ramsay for all the knowledge, laughs and all round good time! I'm gonna start changing lives! :-D
Damn. What a way to start the week.
No way! This is unprecedented. The Filthy 50 has come up several times each year I've been here, always the original version.

Easiest Newbie Chronicle ever. Go back to Wednesday 130109. Turn your computer, iPad, or phone upside down.
3-2-1...GO!
backward fitty! dang, that sounds fun.
I wonder, should the walking lunges be done, er, backward steps... that would be awesome. That's how I'll do it.
Crazy. Just got done watching a FF video.
I was watching the "CrossFit Newtown's Matt Giordano" video and Giordano said that the weight should be on the heels when pulling. I learned that during the pull body should be at triple extension with the ankle, knees and hips. So to reach triple extension the weight should be on the toes. Since I work out at my home garage gym, I do not have a coach to ask and correct. Which is correct or is both wrong?
Steven Platek @7...Oh Dude, that's just perfect. No way I'm doing that, but still, it's perfect!
Took CrossFit Kids this weekend. Aimee, Kelly, and John were by far one of the best training teams I have ever had the joy of being taught by. The were passionate about Kids and have a vision of how to change the world around us one kid at a time. The fervor in which they taught was inspiring and incredibly motivating. I hope more people will take this seminar and be lucky enough to have this team train them as well.
Any other garage crossfitters who signed up for crossfit for hope Kenya? We should see if we can beat the affiliates--I signed up, but all I've got it $50 to donate.
Awesome weekend! CrossFit Kids Cert @ Trident CrossFit was a great experience! John, Kelly & Aimee were very knowledgeable. The passion they have for the program and the "kiddos" is inspiring. It just reassures why I fell in love with this community! Thanks Coaches for all of your wisdom, techniques and guidance.
Woop Woop! Had a stellar weekend in Calgary at the Crossfit Level 1 seminar.. Big Ups and applause to Eric, Austin, Tommy, Brett and Jason; you guys are all passionate instructors and awesome Crossfitters :) Thank you for your knowledge and also thank you for cheers as I did my first rx'd "Fran" ever!
So awesome to spend the weekend in the company of such awesome Athletes & Coaches! Thanks Tommy, Brett, Jason, Austin......and Chris Spealler's friend (Eric) :)
Playoff Beard @32 ystd,
Word Brother. Glad you are back in the cyber-gym. Man-hugs.
Thanks so much to the team of coaches at the level 1 cert in downtown Atlanta this weekend. I learned so much and am so excited to share my newfound knowledge. The coaches were not only professional but made the weekend so fun! Well worth it!
Bingo...new to crossfit. Thanks for your awesome posts!
Thanks to Danny, Nicole and Kimo for a great Level 1 Course at CrossFit New Zealand. Learnt a lot!! Can now hopefully begin to build my career in CrossFit.
I would like to thank the three trainers Danny, (I told you I would write a comment), Nicole and Kimo who instructed on the CF L1 course at CrossFit NZ over the weekend.
This was the first time that I have been to a CF facility and I found the course to be very well presented and enjoyable - even 'Fran'. I also now understand the theoretical framework behind CrossFit and the various methodologies that are employed. I doubt I would ever have understood this without completing this course.
Thanks guys.
Damon
#12: The majority of the pull should be on your heels. However, when you finally finish triple extension it is common and sometimes instructive or helpful to be on your toes. Not everyone does it, but some swear by it. Try it for yourself.
Just got done with the Level 1 Seminar at CrossFit Maximus in Lexington, KY. What an awesome weekend!! James Hobart, Austin Malleolo, Joe Degain, along with the gals, Maggie, Mel, and Denise all did a fantastic job. All were very knowledgable and easy to talk to. They definitely made things fun as well as easy to comprehend/absorb. Thanks for a great weekend guys!
FANTASTIC Level 1 at CrossFit Maximus this weekend! A big thank you to all the participants - you guys make the seminar what it is! Spread the love :)

Awesome time at Crossfit TNT this weekend! Thanks again
So, I attended the Level 1 Cert at CrossFit TNT in St. Charles, MO this weekend and here is what I took away from the classes:
- Jenny from the block has a booty and speaks rough Chinese “HI….YAAAAAaaaaa” “HI….YAAAAAaaaaa” (Yeah, that’s my snatch work)
- Joey “Babyface” Dill is a Ninja, just don’t expect any knee push-ups from this fella.
- Omega 3 Fish Oils can cure World Hunger as long as you don’t have to explain the ratio of EPA & DHA.
- Abi Grove – fellas don’t lift anywhere near Abi if you want to save any ego you may have regarding your lifting abilities. (In case you didn’t understand the warning, she will kick your ass)
- If congress would implement the slow clap, the national deficit would all but disappear.
Loved the training!! We had the ultimate trainers! Nadia, Joe, Abi, Doug, Joey, David 'the Ultimate intern'...you guys rocked it out! So articulate and motivating. AMAZING AND THANK YOU!!!

Learned so much at Level 1 course at CF TNT this weekend. Thanks Nadia, Joe, Doug, Abi, and Joey! You all rock!
Iam scared to do the filthy fifty backwards. I played a led zeppelin cd backwards once in college and I couldn't sleep with the lights off for a week.
Fantastic Level 1 training this weekend in Golden, CO!! Sarah, Pat, Hollis, Zac and the Chan's know their stuff!! Thanks so much Coach's for a great weekend!! I learned so much!!

Thanks Joe, Nicole, Sara and Bobbie and the Crossfit Seminar Training Staff, for a great CF Level 1 this weekend at Crossfit Wilmington! You guys ROCK!!! Is there any way we can get the group pic separate from the main site post of the pic? Can't pull up Crossfit Wilmington Pic...Thanks!
I had an awesome time this weekend in Atlanta and thanks to Crossfit downtown Atlanta for the hospitality. The instructors were fun and very informative! I learned so much in those two days and can't wait to come back and train with you all. Thanks again to Chuck, Andy, Connor, Bethany, Leah, and Ryan for the coaching. Hope to see you all soon!
Great Weekend! Lots of great information, plus I got to meet one of my favorite UFC fighters and Chris Spealler’s friend. Tommy, Austin, and Brett were great instructors as well. Thanks Guys!
Big shout out to Kurtis, Rory, Dan, Jesse, Todd and the rest of the crew for putting on such a great Level 1 cert at CrossFit Bellevue. Thanks for being patient with my concussion symptoms....just glad I could still take part!!
READ THIS!!!
Almost every weekend there is a CF course somewhere in the world. Yes, the comments about it get a bit boring. However, you don't know until you have been. I just spent the weekend at CrossFit Max Effort with an amazing group of coaches. The information really brings the whole picture in to focus. Well worth it...find a course and go...or...get online and read the material and ask questions. The more you know...the better you will be!
Thanks to all the awesome trainers (Mike G, Chase, Austin, Lance, Michelle) for a great weekend @ Crossfit Strong in Dallas, TX. They made the Level 1 course truly enjoyable with there knowledge and love of CF. I'll make sure that no one aerates the floor @ my box.

The L1 Seminar in Atlanta this weekend ran like a well-oiled machine. Leah, Ryan, Connor, Andy, and Bethany were outstanding coaches/lecturers/demonstrators. Chuck not only gave great coaching and kept the lectures interesting all weekend, but also managed to keep the entire operation running smoothly at the same time - a true professional. The lessons learned from watching you guys deal with people and keeping things moving was as valuable (if not more valuable) as the information you gave us. Even if someone had no interest in CrossFit, it would be worth watching this group work together. Thanks, guys!
Awesome weekend at CrossFit Strong in Dallas, TX with Mike G, Chase, Austin, Lance and Michelle!
I absolutely LOVED everything about this weekend in San Diego. It was very educational. All the trainers and coaches were so friendly ...thanks again! I highly recommend it!
Thank you to the Seminar Staff (Justin, Nolan, Steve and Kevin. I had an amazing time at the level 1 course in Seoul, Korea. I look forward to using everything I learned...starting today at Kunsan AB! I couldn't have asked for a better team! It was a weekend full of laughs and sweating! Can't wait to attend my next seminar!
AWESOME level one in Golden! In spite of a busted up wrist from some sort of backflip off the pull up bar during Fran I had a great time and learned a ton. Couldn't have asked for a more AMAZING instructor cadre!!!

Great weekend at CrossFit TNT for level 1 trainer cert. thanks to Nadia, Abi, Joe, Doug and Joey.
I learned so much from my instructors and had an awesome time at Crossfit Strong! :)
Just finished the CrossFit Kids cert in Oahu. I must say, it was an absolute blast and easily one of my favorite certs I have done (I am a level 2 trainer with Oly, Mobility, Nutrition, Football under my belt). The trainers are very knowledgeable and are all heart. If you've even had the smallest inclination... DO IT!
Great weekend in CrossFit New Zealand for the level 1 trainer seminar! Thank you Danny, Nicole & Kimo for the great insight & instructs! Much appreciated and will continue to develop my knowledge in CrossFit. Godspeed!
Loved the Level 1 trainer course at Crossfit NZ this weekend! Thank you so much anicole, Danny and Kimo and all participants. A great bunch of people, awesome learning and environment. Keen for more!

Can you break this up some to still get all 50 reps of each exercise or is that cheating? For example do sets of 10 of everything, for 5 rounds, so all reps get done, just broken up.

Here is the Newbie post from 1/9/13 for the several folks above who have already demonstrated a "spoon" addiction. Flip it upside down.
Annnnd a Chipper! It doesn’t say up there (this WOD doesn’t have an official name), but everyone in CrossFit knows this as the “Filthy Fifty”. 10 exercises, 50 reps of each. No one is really too sure exactly why these are called Chippers. Some say it’s because you just “chip away” at the work until you make it through. Others hold that it’s because these WOD’s make you feel like you just went through a wood chipper. Count me as in group 2.
This is the mother of all task-specific WOD’s. We are given a boatload of work that we are to complete as quickly as possible. Quickly…Riiiiight. Each exercise should be done before you move on to the next, and the movements should be done in the order prescribed. For example, all 50 Box Jumps should be completed before you move on to the Jumping Pull-ups, etc. Don’t hop around. If you do not have the equipment requested simply note your sub, or note that you were forced to drop an exercise.
Ready? Take a big breath. Quick explanations of each exercise:
50 Box Jump 24”. From a standstill jump on to a box or other object that is 24” high. At some point before your feet are lower than the 24” surface you must be “standing” up straight with your hips fully open. This can occur in flight on the way down or with both feet planted on top. New to this (or if you have ever taken Cipro)? Jump up and STEP down rather than jumping down. Scale to a lower height if necessary, as low as jumping onto a single 45# plate.
50 Jumping Pull-ups. Find a bar where your wrist is at bar level. Grab the bar, bend your knees, and jump into the PU. Push yourself down from the bar; do NOT do a negative! I repeat, do NOT slowly lower yourself from the PU. Scale by using a lower bar and more jump/less pull.
50 Kettlebell Swings (KBS) 1Pood. Same movement as “Helen” except with a 16KG (~35#) KB instead of 24. Scale by using a lighter KB. Sub is a Dumbbell holding the weight like a plate.
50 Walking Lunge. Total of 50, NOT 50 each leg. Let your trailing knee “gently kiss the ground”. Not even making that up—it’s in the description in another WOD.
50 Knees to Elbows. Kinda like Toes to Bar. Hang from the PU bar. Swing your bent legs up to meet your hanging elbows. Feel free to kip. Sub/scale is raise knees into a tuck.
50 Push Press 45#. Basically an empty Oly bar. “Dip, Drive”. Close your hips slightly while also slightly bending your knees. Immediately push with your legs and open your hips to pop the bar off your rack and press it overhead, locking out your elbows. Scale weight, all the way down to a PVC pipe or broomstick if necessary.
50 Back Extensions. Can be done on a GHD, over a med ball, Roman Chair thingy, spread eagle in a big tire…you get the picture. Many people will do a hip extension for increased speed (lumbar spine remains straight throughout). Sub is a Superman on the ground.
50 Wall Ball Shots (WB) 20#. Just like 1/1/13. Hold the WB against your upper chest, do a front squat, come up and throw the ball to a target 10’ above the ground. Scale the weight of the ball (typical women’s weight is 14#) +/- height (again, typical women’s height is 8’).
50 Burpees. Spawn of the devil. Particularly evil coming after 400 reps of other crazy stuff. From a standstill bring your body to the ground with your chest and quads on the deck at the same time. Get up and jump, clapping your hands overhead. This is not your Uncle’s Marine boot camp burpees, although you can certainly choose to ADD to the suck by doing strict down-out-down-up-stand-jump-clap burpess. I guess. Jump is also relative: if you can slide the Queen of Hearts under your sneaks it’s a jump.
50 Double-Unders (DU). As if Burpees aren’t cruel enough the Filthy Fifty finishes with 50 DU with a jump rope. In order to count as a DU the rope must pass beneath your feet twice while you are airborne. Subs? Tuck jumps (jump, tuck knees, wrap arms around tucked knees, let go in time for feet to hit ground before face). Single-unders , even lots of ‘em, aren’t really the same, but the suggested number would be 3:1, or 150 if you do.
There you have it…the Filthy 50. A good time as Rx’d is sub 30:00. The superstars are all sub-20. You? This is just a lot of work, really too much for a real newcomer to CrossFit. The easiest way to scale this WOD (in addition to decreasing the weights) is to cut down the reps. My bid? You should do 20 or 25 reps of each exercise only. In addition this one should have a cut off or time cap. Newbies should stop at 40:00 no matter where you are in the WOD. Trust me.
The Filthy Fifty. A classic. Your first Chipper. I did it to commemorate my 50th birthday, and my couple-days-late version will be the Filthy 53.
Saddle up! 3-2-1…Go.
*Remember, many of your questions can be answered with a little judicial reading of the comments that are posted just above you.
Scaled to 35 reps each, 20" box; subbed Abmat sit-ups for knees to elbows.

Attended CF-L1 at CrossFit Strong in Dallas this weekend. Had a great time, learned a ton! Mike G, Austin B, Michelle, Chase, Lance, Gale are top notch. Extremely knowledgeable, organized, and obviously successful trainers. Took more out of the class than I ever expected. If you have thought about it, DO IT! If you haven't thought about attending, you need to start.
P.S. Mike G, you need 2 trainer "hoppers" so you can mix in a couple more chicks. Lance is hot and all but 2 Michelles would have put the cert over the top. Just sayin.
Burpees still suck!
28:28
Embarrassing, but my time was 48:33.... Only my second day of crossfit though so I hope to drastically improve that time by spring. I did 3 rounds 20, 20, 10, is that ok or should I do all reps before moving on? Thanks for the help!

DU's hurt when you're learning, and take a long time. Jumping pull ups and box jumps sucked too. Really enjoyed doing the burpies in the front. Maybe we could move the box jumps up front too.

I attended the CF-L1 at CrossFit Maximus this weekend. I can't say enough good things about the experience. Our Team: Joe, Austin, Denise, Maggie, Mel, James and guest trainer Jeremy really demonstrated excellence both in the lectures and breakout sessions. CrossFit Maximus was a great host facility (the ab mat gift didn't hurt - great gesture!) That was the best money spent...comparable to the investment in my college tuition! I came in hungry, got fed an incredible amount of information and left on fire for the next step in the journey! Mad Respect to the Seminar Staff - Well done!
I attended the L1 Cert @ CF TNT this weekend in St. Charles, MO. A shout out to my trainers Joe, Joey, Abi, Doug, and Nadia for a great weekend! I learned so much this weekend and am so glad I took the course! Thanks again to all the coaches!

John, Kelly & Aimee from the CrossFit Kids course at Trident CrossFit this weekend were awesome. Such knowledge and inspiration, and I was able to take away so many great ideas and concepts to use on my kiddos when we start our very own CrossFit Kids program. Thank you for a great weekend, sharing your time and experiences. And a big thanks to Trident for having us at your gym!
Thanks!!!

40 minutes, had to get back to work!
As Rx'd except:
12# wall ball
25 box jumps before time was up
Burpees were WAY better in the opening half.
Knees to elbows were tough. I found that keeping my elbows bent (and upper body tight) the whole time prevented my lower body from swinging too far back, allowing me to knock out reps more quickly. Is there anything that says you have to lock your elbows on each down swing?

Excellent Level 1 class at CF Strong this weekend in Dallas. Much thanks to Mike, Chase, Gale, Austin, Lance and Michelle. Awesome opportunity to learn and apply that knowledge. Great work folks! Had fun, worked hard and learned a lot. Thanks!
Attended the Kids Cert at CrossFit Oahu this weekend and it was the best Seminar CrossFit has to offer. I've been to all the Seminars but this one ROCKED! Instructors made things FUN, and had a lot of passion for what they do--the best kept secret is that the cues work for adults too. Erik, you are a legit braddah, super presenter, Keegan awesome to meet you and see the "OG CrossFit Kids Instructor" and John--super. Can't wait to start my kids program!

Huge thanks to the Superstar CFL1 Seminar Staff in Golden, Co. this weekend. You don't really know how much thrusters suck until you do them at altitude with Pat Barber and Matt Chan watching your form..
Thanks again Cherie, Matt, Pat, Zach, Sarah and Hollis!

Great workout!
Big Thanks to the trainers from CF-L1 at Downtown Atlanta this weekend!! Had a blast and can’t wait to share my new skills and knowledge. Loved the staff and how they kept the course running smoothly with their personal experiences and a TON of humor! Couldn’t have asked for better leaders!
22:40
Cut the reps in half. Did 75 singles in place of DUs. The only things I could do without pausing was the lunges and the swings. Gonna take some serious work to get to rx. I'm a schvitzball as it is!

WOW! What an awesome Course this weekend in Las Vegas. I really appreciate how professionally it was run, the quality of the trainers and content. It makes me proud to be part of the Crossfit Community. Thanks, Richard

jmu alum @101,
Have you been to an L1 Seminar? At the end the Flowmaster notes that there are no evaluation forms and asks the participants to comment on the Monday Main Page 'comments'. Don't like 'em? No worries...walk on by.
Steve Cole @128,
Oh yeah...I'm SO gonna go look at that!
The Coaches Prep Course was so great! Learned a lot from the absolute best coaches!!! Thanks Miranda, Jason Khalipa, Boz, Dave Castro!

The Level 1 Cert at CrossFit TNT was an incredible experience put on by extraordinary people. I learned:
1) I didn't know SQUAT about CrossFit before this weekend, even after doing it for 2 years, reading countless journal articles and watching hours of vids on YouTube. My understanding of CF philosophy, the movements, the life benefits it affords, and coaching is ten-fold from what it was before this weekend.
2) I still have a sh*t-ton to learn about CrossFit.
3) For the rest of my life I will win any argument I am engaged in about "who are the best athletes in the world?"
4) Do not walk downwind from Joe Westerlin for at least 8 hours if you see him eating a peanut butter sandwich and drinking a glass of milk.
5) We are all unique little snowflakes.
I am a better human being for attending. Thanks Nadia, Joe, Doug, Abi, Joey, and Dave!
Learned a TON at the Coach's Prep Course this past weekend at US CrossFit in Encinitas, CA. Big thanks to our coaches - Boz, Jason K & Miranda! If you're looking to really improve your coaching technique, i highly suggest taking the CPC course!
Hey Hey...Took CF Level 1 at Crossfit Bellevue this last weekend. Great, Awesome, Amazing time!! I took a whole lot from it and achieved a Fran PR! Great staff there who are really dedicated to sharing the knowledge and ways of CF. Today I walked into my gym, CF SKAGIT, and got slapped in the face with "Klepto". Thanks to all the "clean" therapy I received I was able to do it RX and in a pretty good time of 25:52!! Thanks so much for sharing your passion for fitness!!
San Diego Cert ... Josh Everett and the rest of the crew were awesome, so much to learn...practice pratcice and practice...techique is the key to everything...Core to Extremity is no joke...
Next time it will be awesome if we received visit like Dave Castro, Coach Burgener, Camille...etc you introduce them to the class so we can say hi to them....just a quick chat, those people can influence the attendent mood to do their best!!
Okay, I tried mostly RX'ed - 100 singles for doubles and knees to chest.

Attended CrossFit Kids Seminar this weekend at Trident in Alexandria, VA with instructors John and Kelly Brown of CrossFit Agoge and Aimee Lyons of CrossFit King of Prussia and it was nothing short of AMAZING. I loved hearing all the success with the CF Kids program and really see the impact it can have to change our world in a real and positive way. Our classes were so informative, so fun and our Seminar Staff could not have done a better job. They painted a fabulous vision and we are excited to launch our kids program a LoCo CrossFit in Leesburg, VA!

Did reps of 10 for 5 rounds, resting as necessary bw rounds:
4:33
4:15
4:05
4:30
3:51
Total time: 21:14 mins
Did 30 reps as Y was closing, in 13:45...
90 single unders
30 burpees
30 thrusters w/ 18# 'bodybar'
30 back extensions
30 pp, 45# bar
30 toes to bar, on ground
30 steps, walking lunge
300m row
Bad distal bicep mojo @ CF box attempting a 1RM DL with alternating grip Thursday. Didn't hear a pop, but things were squirrelly in the right elbow and strength dropped, fast, to zilch -- bicep appears a bit out of place -- strain for sure, possible tear. RICE-ing and hoping. Doc to look at Tuesday.
For time:
25 Double unders
25 Burpees
34 Wall ball shots, 17 pound ball, 9' target
25 Back extensions
25 Push press, 45 pounds
25 Knees to elbows
Walking Lunge, 25 steps
50 Kettlebell swings, 18 lbs
25 Jumping pull-ups
38 Box jump, 16 inch box

As Rx: 22:44
I used an 18 lb ball but hit well above the target, more like almost 11 feet.
I did hands touching floor and then extending back up for back extension (same ROM and same muscles used, but a little bit sloweras you can't use the pad to push against)
K2E - I used rings as my gym's pullup bar is too close to the wall to allow for decent back kip so you pretty much start from a stand still each time.
I thought it would be much easier than the classic filthy fifty, but I thought that this was actually harder. I think that my pretaxing the body wtih the harder slower more demanding movements of the burpees & med ball toss early, you are a bit fatigued and shoulders, etc. are a bit zapped for the PP, and the walking lunges, and even the jumping pullups... I never really feel those but I did take a few second break on those as my legs and shoulders were a little bit tired in the mid part of the set.
Great WOD... might be better than the classic filthy 50.

CFWU-3. Just PU therapy 1st & 2ND. Pushups instead of dips 3rd. Superman. Row 500m.
27:28
Decent time going I think until I got to KB. Put ball down twice or 3 times. No reason for anything more than 1. Jumping PU ROM better. Shoulder seems to be improving. Decent job pushing pace at end of BJ, but broken to sets of 10 for all. DU pretty tough. Took at least 1:30 if not more.
29:24
100 single-unders.
Touched toes on bottoms of K2Es, but those were still what really slowed me down, as usual.
Box jumps were hard.
Absolutely smoked from this, and the endorphin blast kept me up last night! Feeling jacked up today.
41:00
tuck jumps
box 21''
M/47/6'/195 lbs.
"Terrible Twenty" (scaled down to puppies), but with 35 lb kettle bell, 45 lb push press, & 19" box jump (tractor tire).
Did knees to elbows this time instead of sit-ups (well, knees to "up in the air in front of my face as far as I could").
