Crossfitters can't do strict pull ups what??
Wow, big numbers for Rich. My max rep in strict pull ups is 30 but i give in quickley and at the 3d attempt my numbers go way dow. Amazing how he can keep the same numbers the 5 rounds.
When people say that I laugh, as if your don't get a good burn kipping. Also, since doing CF, my strict pull up have gotten 3x better.
@1#
No, we can't. Just weighted. And L-sit. lol!
Lynne has injured my shoulder both times I've attempted, never doing it again. Bench press is just not functional enough. I will sub pushups.
"Lynne", another "girl"! Who's been talking to Coach? Come on. Fess up. How many "girls" have we had this month? Cool stuff. "Lynne" is named after Lynne Pitts (don't ever forget that 'e' if you know what's good for you). She used to be a pretty awesome power lifter I hear. Lynne is master of this domain, running roughshod over spammers and trolls, and rescuing idiots like me all the time!
5 rounds, NOT for time. You are not trying to go fast here. This is a max effort WOD. Each round is an attempt at the max number of reps you can do of body weight bench press and pull-ups. According to Lynne herself you may rest as much as you wish, not only between rounds but also between exercises. That doesn't mean you can't go directly from bench to pull-ups without rest, only that the videos of folks like Brendan G. doing "Lynne" with no rest between exercises isn't Lynne's idea of as Rx'd. You decide; it’s you vs. you.
Body weight bench press. How much do you weigh? That’s how much you bench (bar + plates = body weight). More than your max? Scale the weight down, of course. Only able to do a couple of reps at BW, maybe 2 or 3? My call is choose a weight you can do at least 5 reps in the first couple of rounds. No spotter? Don't be stupid. Either use the squat rack and the self-spot just above your chest, or STOP one or two reps prior to your max. If you are lifting alone don’t use clips. If you get stuck you can push one side of the bar up and let the plates slide off. Don't go all USC tailback on us, OK?
Pull-ups? However you need to do pull-ups to do lots and lots of them. Kip like a...well, like crazy. Do them strict deadhang if you’d like (you know, 'cause you're just like Rich, after all) . Hand position is STILL up to you. Seriously, no one cares, and we STILL aren’t going to have the “kipping = cheating” conversation. Note in the comments how many you got each round as well as your total for both bench and PU.
Subs? If you don't have a bench or don't care to do bench press you can always do push-ups, or better yet do ring push-ups. I will do 1/2 BW Shoulder Press instead of bench press.
I have no idea who Fran, Helen, Karen, Cindy, or Mary are, but I know Lynne and she's really cool. Give this one your best shot, and when you meet Lynne herself tell her how you did!
3-2-1...Go.
In the photo caption, it states "shoulder width barriers can increase practice time"
Can anyone elaborate, I'm confused?
how long of a break do you take in between each round because it doesn't say for time?
@#7 - is that THE Ben Smith? Can't be..
#7 Dan: Lynne has never hurt anyone. But improper form gets people injured all the time. Bench press is a wonderful movement.
I want to know how how Don Knotts did on this WOD, because he'd be a better frame of reference for me.

Sad... But considering I almost never bench press I'm happy - it's a bit close to my 1RM but I really wanted an rx benchmark to work from for future reference.
Settled into a good butterfly 3rd round.
To the guy who got injured: where is you bw bench press in regards to your 1rm? If you push too hard, and bias one side with bad form, that's when the injuries will happen.

No spotter so I couldn't really go to failure on the bench. Strict pull ups. seriously, kipping in this one is just embarrassing and lying to yourself.
Bench press is one of the most important movemts in all of weightlifting... that coupled with iso curls!!!
You can rest for as long as you like. I find that around 3 minutes gives me time for best strength recovery and keeps me warm too. Some of my power lifting buddies prefer to wait for a full 5 minutes, just don't get cold and waste your warm up!

Planning on subbing bench (don't have one) with weighted push ups. Will use a tyre on for each hand to get more depth and one for the toes to simulate the perpendicular movement of the bench press. The load will be a rim with a tyre on it and small plates if necessary. Thoughts?
Was all geared up to do this WOD, but since I have to go to a different gym on Sundays being that mine is closed, they had a very interesting WOD on their board that I have never done before.. It was called "Miagi" and looked like a roided up version of the Filthy Fifty, so my competitive nature made me do it to rep my gym.. Man was it a tough one but RX'd 13 mins better than their lowest time at 28:01(damn you you single second) haha.. It's a great workout and I suggest everyone give it a shot!
M/21/191/6'
If your intention is to have a strength workout, don't do lipping pull-ups. If you can't bang out that many strict pull-ups I feel a band assist would be much better on a taxed shoulder joint than resorting to kipping to feel like you are getting enough reps. Rest enough to perform at high capacities in each round.
If you are looking for a metcon, I don't think bench press and kipping pullup to failure are good movement selections. Lots of potential for injury with degraded form struggling for those last few reps

Sunday musings...
1) Enough (Thanks B@rry). "Enough is a good as a feast." Mary Poppins.
2) Automobile. Utensil. Trying to make myself believe this.
3) Squirrel. Some awfully chubby ones running around our place. They haven't noticed that dog pack bingo is still fast and lean.
This is gonna be interesting.
4) Black Box. A type of research, among other things. Sometimes the process inside the Black Box is so complex that it is more confusing and more difficult if you open the Box in an attempt to do "better" research. There may be too many moving parts, or the interaction between parts might be too complex, or it might just take too much time, time that is better spend in the investigation.
By varying the left side input and then evaluating the right side output one can make conclusions about the effect of the input as long as we assume that the process inside the Black Box is net the same. 3 on/1 off vs. 5 on/2 off, for example. Unmeasured Paleo vs. measured Paleo.
The Black Box, in this case, is you.
5) Superficial. The papers today are filled with missives about the paper-thin veneer of substance in modern lives. The "end of courtship" in the NYT, the "meetings without end" in the WSJ. There's a certain ROI that seems to be expected from every waking moment, an almost panicked need to fill each moment so chockablock full of something, lots and lots of somethings, that it seems impossible to know any one part of a moment to its fullest.
"On a grand scale we've traded perspective for immediacy, depth for speed, emotion for sensation." --Steve Almond
Lotta meat on that bone. I'm as guilty as many. Often's the time I've been "talking" with someone while reading, writing, texting, watching...you know the drill. As often I've been unwilling, nearly unable to tolerate, let alone enjoy, so much as a moment of solitude or repose. It's odd, because I know that some of my best moments have come in the company of only a yellow pad and an pen, without agenda, without a map, without a clock. Some of my happiest moments have been spent one-on-one with a loved one doing pretty much nothing.
Feel it fast, right now! Sure, there's a place for that, and it really is cool that we can do just that so much better now than 2, 5, or 10 years ago. I like me some Facebook as much as the next guy, maybe more than most old next guys, and that's more than OK. As long as I take the time, every now and again, to look at some single thing, look at it from all sides, get down to its roots, and leave myself open to whatever emotions might respond.
As long as every now and again I put aside the ROI of volume in the moment and rejoice in the quality of the moment.
I'll see you next week...
Funny how so many say bench press is not a functional movement....no surprise most of those people have single digit bench press numbers. It is indeed very functional.

Did a worm up with 135 to get the blood pumping and the hinges oiled, then went strait to the bench and could not do one press with my weight. So I did an extra set to compensate for not resting. After a couple sets I started to really pay attention to the resting cycle. I found an incredible difference between a three minute rest and a 5 minute rest.

Starting on the second round I felt an uncomfortable feeling in my right pec/delt tie in area. It was not an immediate sharp pain. Instead it built on each rep until I stopped because of the discomfort. Maybe a muscle knot, maybe something building toward a tear? Not sure. Did not feel it on first round, but I did take the first round to failure which I have not done on the bench for a long time. On fourth and fifth round, I let my elbows come away from my sides a little further and it subsided the feeling enough to where I could do a few more reps then round two and three. Up till then, I benched with elbows against my sides. Only the first round was done to actual muscular failure.

I am confused by Rich's numbers. He posts nearly the same numbers on pull ups for each set. It seems obvious to me that he is not truly striving for his max on each set. You're telling me that he can do 5 straight sets of 20+, but can't do more than 22 reps in his first set? Am I missing something?

Subbed push ups with a tyre for each and and one for feet in order to get greater depth and simulate a bench press. Added resistance through a rim with a tyre placed upright on shoulder blades and held in place by the second man. Ring PU.

First time "Lynne". Subbed ring push-ups for bench due to shoulder impingement, most likely due to improper form attempting a 1RM in the bench months ago. Strict pull-ups, since I do enough kipping pull-ups with other WODs--this can be a benchmark to gauge progress in the strict pull-up.
