filthy filthy filthy...50!

Jumping pullups? that seems too easy...said no one who ever did 50 jumping pullups.

Does anyone have a link to any analytics from the last Open? I am specifically interested in looking at performance results IF there had been a 40 - 45 Masters division last year.

Thanks Joel! There is a lot of interesting stuff there, so I am going to bookmark. At first glance I did not see.exactly what I was looking for, but good stuff nonetheless. Having just turned 40, I am basically just trying to figure how I would have performed against others in that age range. I am thrilled that they added this division, but want to temper my delusions of grandure against some real comparative data.

Annnnd a Chipper! It doesn’t say up there (this WOD doesn’t have an official name), but everyone in CrossFit knows this as the “Filthy Fifty”. 10 exercises, 50 reps of each. No one is really too sure exactly why these are called Chippers. Some say it’s because you just “chip away” at the work until you make it through. Others hold that it’s because these WOD’s make you feel like you just went through a wood chipper. Count me as in group 2.

This is the mother of all task-specific WOD’s. We are given a boatload of work that we are to complete as quickly as possible. Quickly…Riiiiight. Each exercise should be done before you move on to the next, and the movements should be done in the order prescribed. For example, all 50 Box Jumps should be completed before you move on to the Jumping Pull-ups, etc. Don’t hop around. If you do not have the equipment requested simply note your sub, or note that you were forced to drop an exercise.

Ready? Take a big breath. Quick explanations of each exercise:

50 Box Jump 24”. From a standstill jump on to a box or other object that is 24” high. At some point before your feet are lower than the 24” surface you must be “standing” up straight with your hips fully open. This can occur in flight on the way down or with both feet planted on top. New to this (or if you have ever taken Cipro)? Jump up and STEP down rather than jumping down. Scale to a lower height if necessary, as low as jumping onto a single 45# plate.

50 Jumping Pull-ups. Find a bar where your wrist is at bar level. Grab the bar, bend your knees, and jump into the PU. Push yourself down from the bar; do NOT do a negative! I repeat, do NOT slowly lower yourself from the PU. Scale by using a lower bar and more jump/less pull.

50 Kettlebell Swings (KBS) 1Pood. Same movement as “Helen” except with a 16KG (~35#) KB instead of 24. Scale by using a lighter KB. Sub is a Dumbbell holding the weight like a plate.

50 Walking Lunge. Total of 50, NOT 50 each leg. Let your trailing knee “gently kiss the ground”. Not even making that up—it’s in the description in another WOD.

50 Knees to Elbows. Kinda like Toes to Bar. Hang from the PU bar. Swing your bent legs up to meet your hanging elbows. Feel free to kip. Sub/scale is raise knees into a tuck.

50 Push Press 45#. Basically an empty Oly bar. “Dip, Drive”. Close your hips slightly while also slightly bending your knees. Immediately push with your legs and open your hips to pop the bar off your rack and press it overhead, locking out your elbows. Scale weight, all the way down to a PVC pipe or broomstick if necessary.

50 Back Extensions. Can be done on a GHD, over a med ball, Roman Chair thingy, spread eagle in a big tire…you get the picture. Many people will do a hip extension for increased speed (lumbar spine remains straight throughout). Sub is a Superman on the ground.

50 Wall Ball Shots (WB) 20#. Just like 1/1/13. Hold the WB against your upper chest, do a front squat, come up and throw the ball to a target 10’ above the ground. Scale the weight of the ball (typical women’s weight is 14#) +/- height (again, typical women’s height is 8’).

50 Burpees. Spawn of the devil. Particularly evil coming after 400 reps of other crazy stuff. From a standstill bring your body to the ground with your chest and quads on the deck at the same time. Get up and jump, clapping your hands overhead. This is not your Uncle’s Marine boot camp burpees, although you can certainly choose to ADD to the suck by doing strict down-out-down-up-stand-jump-clap burpess. I guess. Jump is also relative: if you can slide the Queen of Hearts under your sneaks it’s a jump.

50 Double-Unders (DU). As if Burpees aren’t cruel enough the Filthy Fifty finishes with 50 DU with a jump rope. In order to count as a DU the rope must pass beneath your feet twice while you are airborne. Subs? Tuck jumps (jump, tuck knees, wrap arms around tucked knees, let go in time for feet to hit ground before face). Single-unders , even lots of ‘em, aren’t really the same, but the suggested number would be 3:1, or 150 if you do.

There you have it…the Filthy 50. A good time as Rx’d is sub 30:00. The superstars are all sub-20. You? This is just a lot of work, really too much for a real newcomer to CrossFit. The easiest way to scale this WOD (in addition to decreasing the weights) is to cut down the reps. My bid? You should do 20 or 25 reps of each exercise only. In addition this one should have a cut off or time cap. Newbies should stop at 40:00 no matter where you are in the WOD. Trust me.

The Filthy Fifty. A classic. Your first Chipper. I did it to commemorate my 50th birthday, and my couple-days-late version will be the Filthy 53.

Saddle up! 3-2-1…Go.

Well jumped into it without reading the above workout plan. I broke it into five rounds. I only have a 14 pound medicine ball. Since I did not follow workout plan I guess my 48:28 does not count. The filthy fifty cleaned my clock. Also I had to use my pinic bench for back extensions. A weight plate for a kettleball(25) Thank you coach. Eigth CF workout.

First time doing the FF. Why can't the Burpies be first? It took me over 9 minutes just to get the 50 burpies done. That's where I lost all my strength, breath and motivation. The burpies were more like rising zombies than anything else really. It doesn't have to be fun to be fun, right?

Had to sub a 15-lb backpack full of shoes for the wall ball, a 20" chest/table for the box jumps, and 2 5# dumbbells for the kettlebell swings, and a 30# suitcase full of heavy stuff for the push press. Uff da! My first FF = done, definitely tons of room for improvement!

1:02:26 for time. I did everything as prescribed except for the box jump. The only box available might have been a few inches short. I will have to measure it later. I would have been done sooner, but the burpees were more difficult than I thought they would be and took about 25% of the time to complete. Also some of the exercises were new so I spent a little time learning them. I also did not have the skills to do double unders so I did 5 regular for one double under(250 total) and then I performed 10 double unders in the middle to just give them a try so I have something to build on.
I am positive I found a exercising lifestyle in crossfit, because I saw today's workout and immediately had a inside smile at the challenge. cant wait to see how I do next time.

Four months ago I hit a pr with 26:40 for my 50th birthday.
Tough workout for this old broad too

just a bit over 57 minutes.
subs
- good mornings with a 28 kg barbell for back extensions
- thrusters with a 22 kg barbell for wall-balls
- 100 single-unders for double unders - next time i will do tuck jumps

before burpees i was at 37 minutes, i'm just glad you people here love burpees too :)

just for the record - box jumps, walking lounges and good mornings were done in one piece

Man, really wanted to do the, what I like to call, the triple F.. Allow your mind to think of what they stand for. However, everyone needs a good deload week every now and then, so low-impact cardio for me all week (the Monday Cindy/clean+jerk pyramid will do that to ya).. Did my usual 60 min bike ride and posted a solid length of 21.55miles this morning and finished the w/o with 45 mins. of drown proofing. Gotta keep yourself entertained haha. Good job and keep up the hard work ladies and gentlemen.

okay, I cut my wall balls up too much and thats when my shoulders began to were down(most of force through one of my arms from basketball, sand, and tape wall ball - it feels small)~30:00 then

burpees straight away would have killed and that many double unders is a goal.
~49:00 in the end, now if I had external motivation ;)
Plenty of room to improve - mission accepted!

50 box jumps (12" box)
50 Jumping pull-ups
50 kettlebell swings (20#)
50 Walking lunges

50 push press (25#)

Wow. Our first Filthy Fifty. We have been doing CF for about 3 months now, and the way I figure it is that life started at my CF conception, so everything I do is a pr! (at least the first time). All of my exercises get better - including my non-CF stuff; we add in sport specific weight and other training like heavy squats once/week and our weight has increased every week! Thanks again to CF!

Back to the tragedy at hand - the filthy 50.
Subbed 24" box with 25" box, Kettlebell with 35# DB, and Wall Ball with 2-20# DB thrusters. All else as rx'd.

me -- 33:30

nephew - 25/5'10"/173 -- 29:18

The little *** smoked me! I have only heard one other guy say it - the knees to elbows really slowed me down. I fought through the box jumps and blasted through the jump pulls and swings and lunges, but then came to a screeching halt on the K2E! Blew through the push press and back X's, and then came crashing down to earth on the thrusters. Burpees were zombies. I have been adding in DU in my warmup everyday to get the technique, so they weren't too bad - 1,2,1,8,1,24,4,9!
I am really dissappointed that I didn't get under 30 min - next time. Well, it's our first time, so its still a pr!

It is great to see people from around the world posting here. I'm from the states, but greetings to those from Italy and all over...

husband is nursing a shoulder impingment and son had new to CF to they did 35 reps and some subs...both did great!

last time i did FF it took me 31 min and i did 35# push press and single unders but this time i did it rx (only had to sub banded good mornings for back ext because we don't have a GHD) and dropped more than 3 min!
27:25 and got the double unders!

interestingly, our 3 month old grandson was in his little seat "watching" us and he started to cry...i glanced at him while i was jumping on the box (box jump #35) and crashed! i really wanted to quit! might have dropped another half a min if i hadn't crashed on the box....there is always next time! lesson learned, don't look away from the box

M/ 38/ 136 lbs/ 5'-6"
I did a differnt WOD last night:
TGU Turkish Get-Up technique and working up to heavy singles
good warmup with stretching, Junkyard dog style jumping warm up and Burgener warm up, DUs
30 lbs x 3 each arm
40 lbs x 3 each arm
50 lbs x 3 each arm
60 lbs x 2 each arm
65 lbs x 2 each arm
70 lbs x 1 each arm
75 lbs x 1 each arm
80 lbs x 1 each arm (first failed and got a bit banged up with a nasty rug scrape/ burn on my right elbow and then did both arms o.k.)
(I think that might tie a PR... not sure..maybe next time I'll actually go for 85 if I feel o.k.)

I was playing around with a partial first elevation to a low forarm/ elbow prop to practice that for heavier weights, still coming across, but not as high,a dn it's still a safe good position for super heavy weights. I did not end up needing that for hte 80 however, but feel like it's a good thign to practice.

Subbed 50 fit ball sit-ups for k2e, 10 kg DB thrusters for wall ball shots and jumped laterally over a bar for DUs. Gotta practice DUs so I can do them in the WOD - the sub was too easy.

golly, did this one a week ago and didn't post right away so I might not be remembering all the details correctly; one of first WODs of the year while getting over the flu. I think I went with 30 reps of each.

20" box
1 pood kettlebell
35# push press
14# wall ball

CFWU-2. PU therapy for left back/shoulder instead of PU. Then dynamic stetching. Superman. DU.
26:26
Done at home. Not a good ROM on jumping PU. Still letting left shoulder/back recover. Used aerobic step & power tower. KB unbroken, PP - put bar down @ 36. Should've pushed through. Didn't remember back ext were next. Back ext too broken. Sets of 5 or so on last half. WB pretty broken. Longer breaks at 10's. Burpees pretty slow - fairly long breaks W 5's for last half. DU pretty bad, but better toward end when I slowed jump down.
8/2/12:27:34 Disapp. Most things decent except for WB. Only sets of 10 & those were slow & breaks real long. Did them outside, so ball slippery & I just suck. KB unbroken. K to E decent. First 12 unbr & good kip on remaining reps. PP - 2 small breaks, but didn't set bar down. First 36 back ext unbr then 7+7. Burpees - sets of 10 - breaks prob too long between sets. DU good thankfully or time would've been much worse. 30+19+1.
1/11/12:CFWU-1. Fr home in eve. Day after back from Vegas.
26:24-PR!
Good job pushing overall. BJ not bad. Used bench & small piece of plywood for jumping PU. Tried to make sure ROM good even though platform a little high. KB unbroken. K to E little better. Kip good on 1st 11. PP - sm breaks, but unbr. 1st 35 back ext unbr. Then 8+7. 1st time w/real WB. Burpees little better. DU good - 21+19+10

30:30, but I substituted wall balls for 20lb kettlebell squats. I've been training boxing and muay thai for years and thought that was tough, but if you use proper form this crossfit thing is killer. Almost puked during the burpeees, but held out.

Comment #302 - Posted by: Jeff at November 18, 2013 1:23 PM

Subbed: 35# dumbell instead of kettlebell
100 single unders instead of 50 double unders, as I have not yet been able to do a double under :(

-Perhaps the longest 50 minutes of my life.
-Blisters well earned.
-"rising zombies" @ comment #14 is probably the most accurate depiction of any movement, in the moment. ever
