The CF-L1 cert in Decatur was more than I even imagined! The trainers made the words in the book come alive! They were very attentive and thorough. The trainers emphasized safety, progressions, and relative intensity, all the things people say CF doesn’t care about. Coach Mike G was entertaining, funny, and he kept us all on task. Coach Leah, Coach Jenn, Coach Bethanie, and Coach Gretchen taught me so many new ques and gave me a lot of things I can use as a trainer. I am even more proud to be a part of the CF community and I am very grateful for the genuine passion the trainers put into our course! ~Mitzi

Level 1 cert at Crossfit Decatur was fantastic! Y'all did such a great job with preparing us for the test. All of the instruction at the whiteboard was clear, concise and practical, not only for the test, but for real life. Mike G. is a very accomplished cat herder. :-) Thanks for keeping it light and laid back. Loved the breakout sessions. Jenn, Leah, Bethanie and Gretchen did an awesome job of explaining thoroughly to the groups as well as giving individual attention. I learned so much my head is spinning! Level 1 Course @ NorCal CF was awesome! I've been doing CF for some time and have gathered information from numerous sources, but the experience and dedication of the seminar staff at the course far outweighed that by a long shot. Big ups to Russel for leading it, Jason for hosting, Neil, Pat S, Pat B (for pickin on me), Nick, Laura, Ashley, Gabe and the rest of the personnel that put it together. The professionalism, expertise, and energy was exciting and intriguing. I really look forward to applying all of the newfound cues and tips to both y own "box" and my own skills.
Once again thanks for a great experience.

I came back from my deployment, not well. Ya'll really made me feel like I was making the right decision coming back and taking that next step, that I have put off for the last 6 years. The piece by Watts is wonderful. Western education used to mean liberal arts education, an education aimed at liberating the mind and the individual: an education fitted to free people. It was broad, inclusive, non-specialized, and the opposite of servile or instrumental education.

We have come full circle, education specializes too soon and fixes young people upon a certain course before they know who they are or what they could possible want. Such an education, as Watts hints at in the video, ill-prepares students to become free individuals, to pursue their dreams, to become who they are.

In this way so much of education today is like fitness pre-CrossFit, too specialized on the one hand -- creating physical deformities like killer biceps at the expense of proportionality (and beauty) -- or too vague on the other -- logging endless hours on a treadmill or elliptical trainer mesmerized by empty numbers that never add up to better fitness.

Just as CrossFit improves general fitness so education ought to prepare individuals generally for life, not specifically, at least not in the early years. For liberally educated free men and women, excellence (Truth, Beauty, and Goodness), not money, is the goal. I think that is what Watts is saying in the short video. And it seems to me that is what CrossFit is all about. the good news is that education, like the fitness industry, is in the midst of a revolution.

By the way, I really appreciate the thought-pieces on rest days.

Great weekend in Decatur, GA! Flowmaster Mike G. was a stellar, Italian Stallion leader and the trainers; "Yes Coach Jenn", Bethanie, Leah, and Gretchen kept us honest in our movements and gave us great coaching progressions and cues for our future athletes. I could write a novel about the little things I took away from the level 1 seminar, but as I made the 4 hour drive back to Nashville, there was one theme that stood out in my mind: The Crossfit Community makes this train continually gain speed. I met some awesome athletes from all over the map this weekend and I'll never forget the encouragement given during our group workouts (shout out to Kayla and Riyaz!). After this seminar, regardless if I passed the test or not, I walked away a better athlete and member of the greatest fitness community on earth! Thanks again trainers and staff for everything - Hunter Tubbs, Crossfit Nashville

My knowledge of CrossFit just took a leap exponentially. Endless thanks to Kurtis, Chris, Tommy, Rory, Jesse, Austin, Rob, and Chris E for their time and presentation. I feel like an athlete and a coach born anew from the wealth of knowledge and passion these individuals displayed. I have never come across a group of individuals as in love with the aim and prescription of CrossFit, as I thought I was. Nor have I come across a community more educated in what is and should be happening in-and out of-our bodies.

Had a great time in Decatur with an even greater staff. Mike is a true leader and it reflects through the trainers. I would wife up any of those ladies ; ) mainly because they could destroy me in any work out! But seriously, there was no shortage of passion in the folks that took the time and energy away from their homes to bring us one step closer to our personal goals. It may be their "job" but at no point did I feel unheard or undervalued. The work outs were tough and the test broke a mental sweat. Everything you could hope to learn and more in two days. I for one feel honored to say day 1 of my cf career will be because of them. Thanks guys and gals, you laid an amazing foundation.

I very rarely speak about the posted thoughts/ topics, in this case the video.... I thought it was GREAT. We're so sucked in it's hard sometimes to see the forest from the trees... we're too zoomed in.. it's HARD to push away and to seperate and really and truely ask these questions. It's HARD to think about life without the commitments of money and the pusuit of happyness, in it's pure form. I actually think that one, of many, reasons that things like CrossFit is so popular is because as a result of HARD work and physically pushing past one's preconditioned boundaries, that it expands into other areas of our lives and you start to question other aspects of life and you start to really beelieve that anything IS possible... that's an AMAZING feeling to begin to hope and have belief... TRUE belief of open possibilites... and letting go of pure control... let the ride happen and then see where you end up and what choices you have.

@#22 JeffC,

I couldn't agree more. I am a high school principal that started teaching 24 years ago with an understanding that we were teaching teenagers. Very few of them had even the slightest idea of what they were going to do with the rest of their life. Now we are forced to structure the educational process on preparing kids, KIDS, for a career.

The video presented demonstrates that there is a entire world out there of which we don't even have any awareness. How can I expect a child to pick the path that they will take through this world? How about, as a society, we demand that all kids get a broad based, comprehensive, excellent education so that they are prepared to explore the paths that interest them? I highly doubt that this type of education can be measured by a multiple choice test.

I also enjoy the return of articles, videos, and other opporunities to exercise the mind on rest days.

Matt - thank you for the reminder to "not hold the water bottle/latte while coaching. These types of things spoke volumes....
Loved the analogies tied into seminar. Appreciated how smooth the weekend ran with time frames for workouts, lunch, an exam.
Totally bummed I forgot my CrossFit t-shirt at my hotel!! :-(.
Definitely plan to attend more seminars! After leaving one I these seminars - I feel like I can walk through a brick wall... Lol:-).

Awesome staff and participants at CrossFit Decatur. The coaches were not only extremely knowledgeable, but they were also very personable and entertaining. It made the weekend that much more enjoyable. I learned a lot not only about CrossFit in general, but some of my own faults that I need to work on. Huge kudos and appreciation to ALL the coaches: Mike Giardina, Bethanie Giardina, Leah Polaski, Gretchen Kittelberger, Jennifer Hunter-Marshall and Tommy. Thanks for everything and making it fun. I got something from everyone of you that I will take with me.

Awesome CFKids cert at CrossFit Chicago!!! Thanks Erik, Kelly, Ali and Keegan - your energy and passion for teaching kiddos was contagious;-) Thanks for pushing us outside of our comfort zone and letting us play. I've already had my own kids squatting in the kitchen. Can't wait to get our program up and running!!! Thanks CFChicago for opening up your facility and being so welcoming.

Amazing weekend at the L1 Cert in Toronto!! Massive thanks to all the staff - Joe DeGain, Joe Westerlin, Mel Ockerby, James Hobart, Keith Wittenstein and Matt Dubreucq - you guys are amazing. I learned so much and it inspired me to continue pursuing this path with my life. I can't stress enough how much you all impacted me this weekend. Amazing lectures, demos, advice, jokes, everything - loved it! Love crossfit. Thanks to Paul at Crossfit Coliseum as well for putting up with us.
Oh, and that coconut water post-Fran was probably the best thing that's ever happened to me. Or at least it felt like it at the time.

The The CF Level 1 Training in San Antonio and CF Alamo was awesome. The staff was fun, energetic, positive, and taught all concepts in a way that made the concepts easy to understand. I have walked away from the training not only as a better crossfitter, but a more knowledgeable coach who has a better understanding on how to train others to improve and get better at all CF movements. Cheri, Lisa, Nicole, Zach, and Connor were highly skilled and it was an honor to be taught by the best! :)Also, Cherie's energy kept me engaged and wanting to learn more!

The CF level 1 Cert in T.O. was outstanding. Thanks to the energetic and professional staff for making this such a worthwhile experience. I know I am a better crossfitter and instructor because of the course. It was also a humbling experience that demonstrated how much we still needed to learn about being good instructors.
Joe DeGain, Joe Westerlin, Mel Ockerby, James Hobart, Keith Wittenstein and Matt Dubreucq are exceptional teachers and outstanding ambassodors of CrossFit. Thanks!

I just wanted to give a thanks to the awesome people from the L1 class at Crossfit Rogue, Columbus. Eric, Matt, Lindsey, Nichole, Abi, Andrea. You and the rest of the crew were amazing! It is so great to get around other Crossfit fanatics and become a better coach. I look forward to building upon every thing I learned from all of you. I was just watching Lindsey Smith rip out some heavy cleans on ESPN! Good luck at the Games this year! I'll be rooting for you!

Thank you for an awesome weekend full of learning. The passion expressed by each of the instructors was inspiring and motivating. Thank you Chris, Hollis, Kimmy, Dave, Kelly, Jim and John. You guys shared personal experiences and stories which made the class that much better. UNR Crossfit was a great spot to take the L1 because of the dedicated classroom and large breakout areas. Can't wait to put all this great knowledge to use! Thank you CrossFit for all you've done.

Great job on the course guys! It was a blast to workout with you and learn 'just a bit' ;) more on setting up and executing the deadlift. You made it easy to learn difficult simplification of a complex matter.
