WOW! Those are some massive weights ALX! I won't be getting anywhere near that. Last time I did this, I was at:
225 squat
125 press
295 deadlift
I don't have any plans to do this tomorrow, but I thought I'd share.
Unfortunately, for Jim especially, we did not know we were doing this video until Thursday and had pulled heavy on Wednesday night so the guys were a little fried. Here is a video of Jim pulling 675 from September:

Damn yall are on another level. I won't have anywhere near those #.
Good weights, but when posting a video of a workout it's helpful to show squats that are actually to depth. All those squats would have been red lighted at a meet.

So what type of weight could be lifted without the belts and proper form..... I thought the idea of crossfit was to be competent in many disciplines not to become power lifters. Are wrist wraps and compression shirts going to come next? Smelling salts before lifts?
Hey confused relax please. Not trying to be standoffish but look at any recent crossfit competition. Most athletes were wearing some form of lifting shoe, belt, wrap, knee band etc. crossfit likes to call itself the sport of fitness, and those are pieces of equipment. Pieces that would be welcome at most oly and power meets, even in raw divisions.
Many athletes can push beyond current performance with accessories, and many seem to do so. These items are a big part of rogue and again fasters business.
What should we wod in? Flip flops and loin cloths?
In theory if we're being super functional, we should just pick up rocks and do pull-ups on trees...?
That's the beauty of CF, Confused - always mixing it up. Everyone should attack it at their own level. Power lifters can strap up, belt up, salt up, and go massive poundage. Au natural lifters can go lighter loads and still get a great workout. There's a place for everyone. GS (get some!).
I can pretty much tell you the results of this WOD before even doing it:

WHile I think the squat depth was iffy for all of the lifters in the WOD demo, Jim was probably the only guy who should have been messing around with those kinds of weights. The other guys still need to hash out their form with some lighter weights before showboating jut to get a total.

Increase your total number super fast with Jim Wendler 5/3/1 program. It only takes a few minutes and they have a free app for your phone. I literally went up on all my lifts so fast. Just some food for thought.
Question: I always seem to pinch nerves along my back. is there anyone who has any advice of how to correct/prevent this? would genetics have anything to do with it? want to get it checked out but military medicine really doesnt dig that deep unless problems arent from "personal" training. and i havent had good exp with mil. med.

Regarding depth on squats: We did not know we would be shooting this video until Thursday and had pulled heavy on Wednesday of that week. Pulling 5's at 605, 515, 515, 475 really smoked the guys. They wanted to get close to their 1 RM for the squat despite that. This also contributed to the deads being well under their 1RM.
I posted the results to #OccupyStrength Mid Atlantic where Jim won the Heavyweight, Matt won Middle, Alvaro won Light and Mike was 3rd in Middle at Powelifting meet standards.
Thanks for the posts, just wanted to explain the situation.

The squats were suspect with regards to depth, definitely not USAPL standard but maybe would have passed in other feds. But, this was the first total video in a long time where they actually did legit deadlifts. Strong work, well done.
Please people, stop commenting on the use of belts. You are just showing your ignorance with regards to lifting. Also, when doing max effort your form should not break down. Look at any olympic lifter or high level powerlifter, their third attempts look like their warmups. Magnusson's 1015 deadlift looks like his warmup. You may grind a bit, but your form should not be compromised.

Quick question in regards to Matt Chan briefly mentioning a lack of cycling in creatine use can cause kidney damage.
I always heard/read that creatine was safe to use nonstop since we can also get it from food (ie steak). Has the scientific research on this changed recently?

My back hurts just watching that WOD demo. My god people is chronic back pain for the rest of your life worth the elusive "Crossfit Total". I'd rather save my back and stick to weights I can handle.
Are the WODs alone enough to become fit or are people doing workouts in addition to the WODs? It just seems like I have a lot left to give after these workouts. I wish we had an affiliate here to learn things, but not that lucky.

Man, compared to most of these posts I feel incredibly weak. Before CrossFit I never did powerlifting-type workouts, and maybe that's why. It's sort of discouraging.
I've been CFing for about 10 months in my garage and just got my Level 1 Certification recently. I'm generally pretty fit (surfer, swimmer) and was one of the few people at my cert that was able to do a strict muscle-up (out of everyone who tried, at least). I usually do Brand X "Pack" scaling, and normally stick to these main site workouts. I've been progressing, but it's slow (never done the CF total before but in July my BS 1RM was 165 and Press 1RM was 100).
Any tips on gaining strength? Based on what I read here and what I see on places like the Basic Strength Standards chart, I feel like I'm pretty low on the totem pole for my level of fitness/age/height/etc.
Long time since I've posted and coming off a wrist injury.

I can't believe how many haters there are on here. So what if these guys butts weren't exactly parallel. Would any of you even know if there weren't words written above. These guys busted out some big weights. Also, every single one of them placed at the CF Football #occupystrength competition in Baltimore. Three of them first place and one got overall as well. However, I guess the standards there must've been crap... Offer up some constructive criticism, don't just pick things apart. Because I am sure, everyone who said something negative, never ever came up a little short on a lift, or never ever dealt with form vs intensity in a WOD. I am sure every rep is spot on...

#60 - This sounds like it is from old knowledge.
creatinine is the byproduct of taking alot of creatine, it is also a marker for doctors that you have kidney problems, so when people started taking alot of creatine they thought that it was causing kidney damage. it turned out that it wasn't, rather it was just the doctors seeing that marker and assuming. Creatine is created in the body (although this shuts down when you take supplements), and is found in meats (esp fish). I would say that you want to make sure you are intaking enough water so that it helps your kidneys, but other than being dehydrated there is nothing dangerous about taking creatine. Creatine has been one of the most studied supplements over the last 20 years and is found not dangerous. That being said, doing some kind of cycling might not be a bad idea, just so that your body can start producing it again...

Knees out of sorts over weekend, so stopped at 195 on squat. Press needs work. Kid DL'd 115, a pr for her I think.
what is the fascination with doing both squat and deadlift, I know that there is a certain love of tradition, but these two excercises work essentially the same muscles - quads and lower back. I know that there are certain stabilization muscles that get affected differently and small muscles that come into play different (like the grips), but none of this is reason enough to do both - especially in light of other excercises that would give a better judge of overall strength. The only major muscle group that is the exception would be the hamstrings that get much more work in the squat do to how deep it goes.
This could be rectified by doing an elevated deadlift where you elevate the feet so you are in a deep hole to start. This would satisfy all the major muscle groups in the two lifts - quads, lower back, and hamstrings. I know some people will say what about this muscle or that muscle, but there are no other primary major muscle groups that are not shared by the two lifts (it is after all the same basic motion).
For an overall strength test worthy of the title "crossfit total", I would think something like - elevated deadlift, shoulder press, bench press, and weighted pullup (or pulldown) - would be better, as it would be a great overall test...
just my 3 cents...
Wow there are so many monsters....

Tried low bar back squats today using the cues from the video -- really liked it. I've been doing high bar squats for 35 years, so it was a big deal for me to get out of my rut. Felt really solid and good; will definitely continue to work on low bar technique. Thanks to Steve Reggio for his good advice.

Strong Work!! There are so many critics on here that are negative nancy's!! Encouragement would be nice or like the comment above constructive criticism. This is looks like a strength bias gym but when your going for a max rep form is not always going to be correct all the time. KEEP UP THE STRONG WORK LORTON!

Creatine: If you read any of Kiefer's work, Carb Backloading, he recommends steadily dosing up to 50 grams a day and feels it is safe to remain on that dosage for an extended period of time. I have been dosing at 30-50 grams since the summer and have had no issues at all

365 - on set 2. Didn't try 3rd. Good depth. Almost dumped it, but kept pushing. Decided to stop there. Good job rotating feet out.
170-On 2nd. Barely kept it moving, but thankfully was able to. Good job w/knees back to engage posterior chain. Bar on palm just below knuckles.
410-Unfortunately, real ugly. Decided to stop there - on 2nd set. Totally lost big chest. not on heels, esp right foot
