RE: photo

The athlete needs to sit his ass back more in the bottom of the movement and bring his elbows lower so that his forearms are perpendicular to the floor. His weight is too far forward on his toes and his elbows are positioned more for a front squat than a press.

Comment #1 - Posted by: Springs at October 23, 2012 5:09 PM

From what i can tell from picture..he is initiating the movement with his quads. he needs to bring his butt back and engage the posterior chain, loading up his ham strings. It would probably be a good idea to grip the bar to. He has it in the "front rack" grip. Word!

Comment #3 - Posted by: Lee at October 23, 2012 5:15 PM

Great WOD. But I have a Q: How would a Froning/Thorisdottir type expand upon this workout? Or would they? Heavier/more or is this just a warm-up for that tier of athlete?

Comment #4 - Posted by: Daniel at October 23, 2012 5:16 PM

-Look straight, not up
-Weight in the heels
-Since it is a push press he will need to have his hands wider, outside his shoulders and around the bar (since he will be use the drive to push the bar overhead, the bar needs to be secure)
-knees out on the dip
-elbows for the push press may be too high (if this were front squat it might be different.

Comment #5 - Posted by: ckatech at October 23, 2012 5:20 PM

toes forward, head neutral, full grip. can't tell from this angle if there's a muted hip or not

Comment #6 - Posted by: Chris S at October 23, 2012 5:25 PM

He's "broken" to steal from KStar.
Get his spine in line and brace his midsection and butt. Walk over and tap his stomach.

That will fix the most pressing issue and then if they are still problems:
Weight on his heels. Wriggle his toes.
Head back, not chin up. Eyes on the horizon.

And to adopt a cue I just learned from Nick Horton, don't dip and drive, bounce. Teach him to think of himself as bouncing off the ground like a ball, not getting ready to drive the weight. "Bounce" keeps it snappy instead of the seperate movements many people make the dip and drive.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Craig Massey (Metric) at October 23, 2012 5:28 PM

I recently had a full replacement of my right hip, June 20 of this year. I have been following the workouts posted on the main page for the past two years but now that I have a mechanical hip I was wondering if I should continue with the daily WOD or slow down a bit. I am limited to running on a nautilus and not suppose to be jumping. Is there anything I can do to continue with the daily WOD?

Comment #8 - Posted by: John Cooper at October 23, 2012 5:36 PM

f/43/180/5'10"

Today I did a workout my husband dreamed up.

30 min amrap (should be 10 rounds) of:
10 power cleans (95#)
10 bench press (95#)
10 kettlebell swings (1.5 pood)
10 burpees

7 rounds + 3 burpees

About 5 minutes later I was kind of kicking myself that I didn't do all 10 rounds..... but 27 more burpees seemed impossible at the time.

I then found out that my nose is bruised... from slamming the warm-up bar into my nose while doing push presses. My nose is not a short one and, well, I didn't get my nose out of the way and it got smoked on the bar's way up. WOW! That really hurt.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Johnh 44/205 at October 23, 2012 6:59 PM

-neutral head position
-full and wider grip on the bar having elbows lasering someones knees
- looks like he has a muted hip going
- focus on weight on heels and drive thoes knees back to engage the hamstrings and posterior chain

Comment #11 - Posted by: luis j at October 23, 2012 7:16 PM

Hottie, tottie, God almighty, who the hell am I?

Sorry, it's a Sigma Pi thing.

I'm both dreading and looking forward to this WOD.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Mark L at October 23, 2012 7:25 PM

I would be careful with teaching athletes to bounce instead of dip and drive. If they dip (bounce) too quickly they will lose contact of the bar with their shoulders and then it will crash on them when they reverse the movement into the drive. The dip has to be fast, but smooth to avoid that crash.

Good WOD.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Mike S. at October 23, 2012 8:10 PM

I would start by telling him(me) to stop making 115# look heavy. For someone with a 275# strict press why are you even push pressing at all?

Plus hips back, weight on the heels, look straight ahead not up, get some new shorts and for gods sake if someone from Media is taking your picture make it look right....im an idiot.

Comment #15 - Posted by: the "athlete" in the photo at October 23, 2012 8:40 PM

@John I had a full left hip replacement 8/16/10 a few weeks after my 41st bday. I started CrossFit 12/27/08, so I had good knowledge, and had to relearn how to squat, deadlift, etc. I bought a rower to replace running, step ups instead of box jumps, took about 18 months to feel good about back squating and deadlifts (less weight, more reps). Be smart, play it by feel, and enjoy the new process and pain free hip. Email me if you have any other questions or if there is anything else I can do to help.

High pulls with a close grip have been shown to be a major contributing factor in many should impingements and chronic shoulder injuries. There was a research article about it in the journal of strength and conditioning research some time back. And i have seen issues with it in some of my own athletes. Just an FYI. Love the WOD's.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Shawn at October 23, 2012 9:32 PM

John Cooper,

I suggest you listen to your doctors and most of all listen to your body. There is no reason you can't continue with WODs, the question is how extreme the scaling will need to be. Obviously you after such an invasive procedure you'll need to come back slowly, probably much more slowly than you want to. Before I started working out in my garage, I was a member of an affiliate and we had a guy with multiple joint replacements (hips I think, might have been knees). He did WODs but did a lot of scaling / substitutions. For box jumps he did step-ups, same box as everone else but with controlled steps onto and off from the box to minimize the impact. You may want to give something like that a try. Good luck, hope you get back to form soon.

Comment #18 - Posted by: DJL at October 23, 2012 10:01 PM

Lol, I've seen this dude STRICT PRESS like 275, I like how HQ posted a pic of him push pressing like 115 haha

Comment #19 - Posted by: Matt Z at October 23, 2012 10:54 PM

1) feet straight/ knees out
2) drive through heels
3) midline engaged
4) glutes engaged on drive
5) full grip around bar/ grip outside the shoulder
6) elbows pointed down/slightly in front of bar
7) eyes on the horizon
8) exhale when exerting force

Comment #20 - Posted by: Diego at October 23, 2012 10:59 PM

Haha, nice job Golden. Even though his push press is crap, he recently strict pressed 275 and BP'ed 405 on video

I agree with 13 bounce could be a deceptive cue, if it works for you great. I have seen alot of people just flop and then midline breaks and they just have no control of the body. I like to tell them to pull themselves down and explode like a rubberband. also there is a comment about a muted hip. maybe I don't understand muted hip,but don't you want a muted hip in a push press. Your knees are going to go forward so the hips and back can go straight down. don't you now have the pelvis chasing the femur and the hip angel is more or less staing open

The elbows could come down just a bit. Where they are in the picture would work better if he were doing a front squat. He also needs to put his head in a more neutral position and have a closed grip on the bar. Its hard to tell from the picture, but it also looks like he might be shifting his weight away from his heels.

I was wondering if someone could help me out with something. I am having a lot of neck pain that started last week and got worse after another intense workout day. I swam last week for the 1st time in about a year, but I also did a few more rope climbs than I usually do, and I did a bunch of pushups on the days that my neck got worse. I'm trying to figure out if my neck pain is from swimming, push-ups, rope climb, or just being old. Any help would be appreciated. I can push through the pain, if I need to, but I would love to fix a problem if I've got bad form. Thank you

I did a different WOD this morning.
Early this morning, at about 5 am, I did Angie wearing a 20 lb weighted vest
I stretched out for about 10 minutes in the house then rode my bike a few miles to the park.
The workout took me about 30:55
WAY Longer than a normal Angie, but very different.
I conciously broke up everything into smaller sets to keep on going and not die out.
I did pullups in 20 sets of 5 reps. The bar was wet but someone had put tape on it.. actually it was too rough and kind of messed up my hands a little bit.
Pushups were done in sets of 10 until 70 and then 6 sets of 5 with only a few seconds rest between sets.
Situps were a bit slower than I would have thought. There was a situp station at the outdoor area where you could kind of lock your toes under a bar, but the vest made me kind of hyper extend at the bottom so after about 25, I was doing sets of 10. I kind of went slow and steady with the squats doing 50, then a few second break and then 25 then 15 then 10.
Good stuff.

This is the first time I have done an "official" WOD from this site. The first part was hard but I knew it was going to get easier with less reps so that made it tolerable. I worked as hard/fast as I could without recording time. Next time I will pay closer attention to that so I can track my progress.

The extra 5" must make a big difference since I thought it sucked and I did take some breaks but I thought it would take me way longer comparing it to other times? Come to think of it I was hoping back and forth pretty quickly so the added height must have produced more pause time at the landing.

Good burner. I would suggest doing everything unbroken and taking your breaths in between each set.

9:04 - Rx We did this at my box today. I thought we were going to have to mod with lateral box hops, but my coach brought out some hurdles from the office right after the warmup. I felt like a kid on Christmas morning.

Jumps not bad once I got used to them. Used arms for momentum like box jumps. Need to go faster on them. SDHP not bad. Broke middle rounds roughly in half. Good job keeping hips back, staying on heels.
