I should know this.... How many towel pull ups as a sub for rope ascents?

Comment #1 - Posted by: Chris at September 13, 2012 5:23 PM

I don't have a rope, what exercise can I substitute with? - Thanks:)

Comment #2 - Posted by: michelle at September 13, 2012 6:11 PM

I'm new what are ascents

Comment #3 - Posted by: Geordie at September 13, 2012 6:16 PM

The U.S. State Department identified two of the four Americans killed in the assault on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi as former Navy SEALs.  The State Department said on Thursday that one of the victims was Tyrone Woods, a 41-year-old former SEAL.
Glen Doherty, a former Navy SEAL from Massachusetts, was one of the other victims in the deadly attack, according to a family friend. He worked at the CrossFIT/SEALFIT gym.

RIP

Go to the FAQ section the click Substitutions. For a 15 foot climb, the equivalent is 15 towel pull ups. Alternate hands for more realism. Ascents means times up and down I think. So go up and down 3 times each round. Total of 12 "ascents."

Comment #5 - Posted by: L2mom at September 13, 2012 7:08 PM

I don't have a rope, what is a good sub?

Comment #6 - Posted by: James Lund at September 13, 2012 7:21 PM

Also, watch the demo video for the scaled version of the rope climb. There's a rope row that looks cool. I might drape the rope at our gym over a beam or rack and see if that works.

Comment #7 - Posted by: L2Mom at September 13, 2012 7:25 PM

Geordie, ascents are the opposite of descents.

English might not be his native language. An "ascent" is going from the bottom to the top (of the rope in this instance).

Cool WOD though!

Comment #32 - Posted by: Jason Hutchcraft at September 14, 2012 5:35 AM

@ 25: You can start standing and use your feet, personally though, I'd avoid jumping up the rope as the point is to climb 15 ft x3, not climb 12ft x1 and 15ft x2 per round.

@ 27: Since it's not specified you can perform strict, full-range push ups (military), or hand-release for a challenge, or weighted if you're a sadist. All up to preference.

Comment #33 - Posted by: Dave at September 14, 2012 6:16 AM

Do people watch the WOD demos before posting questions? Esp this demo, as it is one of the better ones I've watched...very informative on what to do during the WOD and how to do each exercise.

18:25 using towel pull-ups. I don't agree that one 15 foot ascent is the equivalent of 15 towel pull-ups. For one, on the rope, if you get tired you can rest locking in your feet and just standing up. Additionally, with rope climbing, most of your work (if you're smart) should be down with your legs. Both these principles don't apply to towel pull-ups. I would say a closer substitution would be 10 towel pull-ups. And even then, that's a struggle for the last couple sets.

Comment #45 - Posted by: Lee at September 14, 2012 8:12 AM

Wow...so many questions today!

as far as pushups and situps just do whatever you think is the most challenging. That is the point, right?

Im sure at least 85% of people here dont have a rope (me included) so i have always done 5 alternating hand towel pullups followed by 5 air squats to simulate 1 rope climb.

Nice time! Watch Annie Thorisdottir do her rope climbs at the Games. She keeps her arms straight most of the time, standing up on her feet and using her arms for balance and pulling her body towards the rope but not really up the rope. If rope climbing technique is 80% legs and core and only 20% arms, you'll go faster and last longer. Check it out :)

Sub'd GHD for first round then Ab mat for last three sets. Military styles pushups throughout. Second round rope climb failed after first ascent, sub'd 5 pull-ups for remaining 2 ascents. Took more rest and completed rounds 3 & 4 as Rx'd.

Failed to check my clock started. Used music today so totaled length of songs listened to for a best guess. 31:26 waved at Pukie.
