depends on when it was taken. Is he coming down or pulling with his arms.

Comment #1 - Posted by: Steven at July 27, 2012 5:10 PM

I think based on the flexion in his calfs that he is on his way up.

Comment #2 - Posted by: James at July 27, 2012 5:34 PM

Wow, this sounds awesome!

Comment #3 - Posted by: Aaron S. at July 27, 2012 5:34 PM

Khalipa knows how to manage pain.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Russ Greene at July 27, 2012 5:48 PM

I am no expert... But less calves, more shrug.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Trueson at July 27, 2012 6:01 PM

He is on his toes and has flexed elbows prior to full extension of hips. Just goes to show how tough that workout must have been if Khalipa's form is collapsing...he is a tough dude!

Comment #6 - Posted by: GD at July 27, 2012 6:19 PM

Arms are bent early, weight is on the toes, head is cranked back, bar not in contact with the thighs, no hook grip, right shoulder is rolled in, and there's some funky Photoshop thingy going on with his feet!

Comment #7 - Posted by: Lincoln at July 27, 2012 6:32 PM

Yeah he's definitely tired cause normally it's all beast mode from him. With that, he's throwing his head back but his upper body isn't leaning back as far as it should at that point in the lift. Normally I would think his neck and back would be at the same angle.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Stevsmi at July 27, 2012 6:34 PM

Damn that's not good. Let me chime in on my terrible technique.

I have a head whip, I'm early arm pulling
and Jumping early

Hope everyone is well!

Comment #9 - Posted by: Jason Khalipa at July 27, 2012 6:43 PM

Awesome picture. I'd guess he's at the top or just past the top of his 2nd pull & 'sneaking' under before full extension because it's faster and the weight is light enough that he can.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Al at July 27, 2012 6:44 PM

I agree Kalipha is a beast, super tough workout a couple hours after another really tough workout. The bar is too far away but probably because he is not extending his hips and knees. He should have triple extension but is only extended at the ankles. Not taking anything away from Kalipha, just a tough series of workouts.

Comment #11 - Posted by: dan at July 27, 2012 6:48 PM

Why does it look like his shoes are glowing??

Comment #12 - Posted by: Dave at July 27, 2012 6:50 PM

My comment is - if you can get the bar up faster this way, do it. This is obviously a very light weight for a guy like JK. Flexibility in technique is important. It is important to make maximal effort lifts with skill, it's also important to only fully extend the hip if you have to in a WOD. Otherwise, it can be too slow, more slow than necessary. The best technique matches the needs of the circumstance.

Comment #13 - Posted by: Apolloswabbie 074" 200 48 yoa at July 27, 2012 7:20 PM

Is this his last rep? Obviously not great but none of us is worthy to critique a tired Khalipa, especially when he takes the time to do it himself. Thanks, Jason.

No head whip and no early pulling. Try to stay on your heels until you fully extended your knees and hips. Then shoulder shrug at the same time you extend your ankles. Only then the arms should pull while you dive underneath the bar, placing one foot in front and one foot back. Non the less, great effort since you won that heat!

I think Khalipa nailed his own major form errors. He can 'get away' with bad form because it's a light weight for him, and the 400 was taxing enough on the legs that he was leaning on his large upper engine. Still though, weight on the heels =P

Comment #53 - Posted by: Alfred at July 28, 2012 9:21 AM

Jason's so strong, he can muscle snatch that weight with ease, and that's pretty much what he's doing. We all know he is mid-event, so of course fatigue is setting in and getting the weight up any way possible is in effect.

If it were a regular snatch for singles, there'd be problems in the sense that the entire triple extension is muted and incomplete. There is no power transfer from ground, through the body, and into the bar with this position. In this position it's a fast deadlift and an upright row using nothing but muscle and strength instead of relying on the hip and technique to get the bar overhead.

If things were where they should be, the ankles, knees and hips would be fully extended so Jason would be on his tippy toes. The arms would be straight to help the transfer of energy from triple extension travel down the arms and into the bar to create upward momentum. Once the bar's up, Jason will maintain a slight bit of layback to allow the reverse J shape of bar path over the body, before pulling himself down under it into a partial overhead power squat.

All things considered, if any of us were at this point in the workout, we'd probably look the same. We just wouldn't be as fast.....

Comment #59 - Posted by: Darin m/43/174 at July 28, 2012 10:48 AM

The commercial HQ posted with the post today is great. Crossfit *DOES* make people better.

That said, it's interesting to contrast this commercial with the "Turning Sevens into Tens" ad that played during the "Oh-12" games. The version I saw was a series of close-ups of a woman's breasts and butt while she did burpies and a few other exercises (I heard were are several versions). No one can deny that aesthetics are a pleasant side effect to our "increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains" but this commercial made it seem as though attractiveness was the end to our means. It seemed gimmicky, off message, and something I would expect to see in a muscle mag or as a part of some flash-in-the-pan faddish fitness craze. I like to think that Crossfit is about more than gratuitous T&A shots. As a father and husband, Crossfit is about increasing the odds of spending more years on this planet with those I love. As a service member, its about being prepared for whatever life throws at me. It means I'm more likely to live to see my future grandchildren and show them that their Granddad can still do a sub-10 minute Fran (HA!).

Sure, as a man, I can appreciate close-up shots of attractive women working out. But if we are talking about effective ways to explain to the rest of the world what [I believe] Crossfit is about, I would think that the commercial posted today would be a more honest way to represent our community than some strategic zoom angles on beautiful women.

Comment #60 - Posted by: Nate D at July 28, 2012 10:48 AM

Nicely put Nate. Like you I certainly appreciated the 7 to 10's ad, but I was very surprised to see crossfit-dot-com pop up at the end.

He's def on his way up. You can tell he's going to be landing on his right leg as his right heel is farther from the ground. Should be even until the very end of the pull. From the bar position his heels should still be on the ground. He killed it though.

Comment #164 - Posted by: cleveland at July 31, 2012 7:47 AM

For Kalipa, the arm bend is a problem but being on your toes after the scoop begins is fine. Watch Bulgarians like Boevski in the olympics and you'll see the scoop and jump are blended and he shifts to his toes during the scoop, not after it. The key here is to keep the ankle angle locked so as the knees rebend the weight will shift to the toes as the hips bang the bar and you go into full extension. Now, is this what Jason is doing or is he just tired and pulling early and using arm bend? Hard to say.

Couldn't find anything sufficiently high from which to hang an object, so I jumped and touched a spot on the wall. Missed out on the accuracy portion of that exercise, but those were still surprisingly hard to get through.

My time is bad, as usual, but it's nice to actually do the prescribed weight for a change.

This one was mostly taken up with the DL
I have been on vacation, but worked out 4 times while on vacation, with the rings, KB, and pullup bar I took, as well as other bodyweight movements, but not anything with any weight over the 1.5 pood KB
I was glad it was higher reps with lighter weights, because I didn't want to just jump in with anything too heavy after a little hiatus.
For me the DL took longer than I thought.. at 20 reps it starts to tax you. My grip but mostly my hams were smoked after this. The HSPUs felt easy really. I had a stationary object to jump up to so that was easier. I jump up with the right hand for the fist 15 then the left for the second 15, to balance out and keep it kind of interesting and fresh, not boring.
Good WOD

Jump and touch was 16", rest as rx'd. Time - 9:28.

Tough but fun. It was going to be too hard to find something that was exactly 12", so I went with touching the rafters from the patio beneath our deck. Except for round 1, I broke these 20-10 - it felt a lot like rebounding drills back in high school. Deads felt good, and were unbroken thru two rounds; broke them into two sets in rounds 3 and 4, as my hamstrings were starting to light up. Unbroken HSPUs.
