Posted a comment that caused a bit of a fuss yesterday, that wasn't the purpose. I do crossfit from time to time to supplement other workouts - best Linda time is 19:20 as rx'ed. My concern was this, when a workout like Fran, and I've seen the Games videos, docks you reps, points and times for improper thruster form, why does the same not hold true for proper pull up form. If you can cheat form on that, why not cheat form on other exercises. Military schools don't count pull ups of improper form, I've never been kicked out of a school for this reason, but I know those that have- for not completing the necessary number of proper pull ups. Again, not hating, crossfit is a great, curious to hear the responses- even the nasty ones.

Comment #13 -- It's a matter of understanding the differences in what the pull-ups do. Strict, military pull-ups are for developing upper body, shoulder, back strength. The kipping pull-ups Crossfit employs are used for conditioning, coordination and power output. Both strict and kipping pull-ups accomplish the same amount of work -- taking the body from a hang position to chin over bar. But the kips are far more powerful and require added skill to orchestrate the movement and timing of the hips along with the shoulder girdle.

Comment #30 - Posted by: Will at July 22, 2012 7:17 PM

CrossFit crew! Thank you for sharing your expert knowledge with us today at Atlas in Chicago. What a fine tuned, well oiled machine you guys have with your presentation and flow of each day :). Well done. Hope to "play" with you all again soon.

IT IS the Fittest Crowd for sure!!!...
Great video, great bods, great butts, great music!..Eye candy for everyone!..

Comment #34 - Posted by: Harry at July 22, 2012 7:45 PM

Fred, my assumption is that by "improper form" you are referring to kipping pullups? If yes, then here is my response: kipping pullups are not strict pullups done with improper form, they are simply kipping pullups. Kipping and strict pullups are two different exercises entirely. The only thing they have in common is that they both result in your body going from full arm extension to chin over the bar. Everything in-between is different. It's like comparing a snatch and a clean & jerk. Both result in the bar going from ground to overhead but what happens in the middle is different. It does not make sense to treat kipping and strict pullups and two different ways of doing the same exercise, they are in fact different exercises.

You could create a version of Fran that required strict pullups if you wanted, but you just have to realize this is an entirely different workout than Fran with kipping pullups. It wouldn't make sense to compare results between the two workouts.

As you are aware, in CrossFit if pullups are mentioned in a WOD it is assumed that most people will be doing kipping pullups (if they have acquired that skill). If the workout dictates strict pullups (which is sometimes does) then it is an entirely different WOD. It is important to define terms when describing workouts so just be aware that in CrossFit "pullup" is defined as "kipping pullup" and "strict pullup" is defined as "strict pullup".

The point is that the two exercises are different and one person's ability to do kipping pullups should not be compared to another person's ability to do strict pullups.

Hope that helps.

James

Melbourne L1 was awesome. Amazing host and incredible staff training us. My mom passed away this past Tuesday suddenly and was my best friend. I debated whether I could even think about going through with my L1. My coach Dani Dufrene told me I was CrossFit strong and she had faith in me and my family said my mom was always talking about how she was so proud of my CrossFit lifestyle and that she would wan me to do it. If it wasn't for the positive staff and the outstanding experience they delivered, I never would have been able to get through it in one peice. Thanks to each of you! Props to Chuck for his first class leadership. 3-2-1 HELL YEAH!!!

Crossfit HQ,

Check out the Journal of Exercise Physiology Online, Volume 15, Number 3, June 2012 edition.

"Resistance Training to Momentary Muscular Failure
Improves Cardiovascular Fitness in Humans: A Review of Acute Physiological Responses and Chronic Physiological Adaptations"

Basically, the article argues that intense resistance training (training to "momentary muscular failure") improves Cardiovascular fitness. Of course, we Crossfitters have known this all along. It mentions 1 rep maxes as an example of maximum intensity, but I think it would be safe to extend the observations to repetitive momentary muscular failure (just about every time I work out).

I have been a personal trainer for five years but never have done a crossfit work out. Just three ramp up classes at Sf crossfit so my first crissfit work out was Fran! Great experience, you really do bond with people when you work out with them to the degree of exertion and intensity. Wasn't expecting to walk away having mad friends

Learned great new coaching techniques! Thank you all so much for this wonderful experience.

@30&35
Thanks for the constructive responses, much more respectful than others I've read from previous posts. It seems as if most crossfitters are very adamant about kipping pull ups. With my present work environment I can't bring myself to do them, I will continue with the strict version, but in the future, who knows. And I continue to do crossfit Thanks again!

Loved the "Fittest Crowd on Earth" video. I'd been trying to get some girl friends to consider Crossfit to no avail. I shared how strong and empowered I felt and how amazing it is to feel and be fit. "It's too hard and I don't want too many muscles" is all I heard. Alas, one gander at all the hot bodies in this video and now they're interested. I guess looking better naked is more of a motivator than I thought.

I have a question for anyone who has perhaps experienced the same problem as me. When doing any of the barbell exercises recently, it feels like something in my shoulder(s) is getting pinched and it is very painful. I'm finding myself having I workout with less weight than I'm capable of in order to compensate. Any advice? Are there certain warmup I can do, or any way to modify form to put less stress on the rotor cuff?

Amazing cert in Wilmington this weekend! After training on and off for the past three years, it was definitely the motivation I needed to take my training to the next level. The instruction was phenomenal. So much information packed into two days. No amount of articles or videos can replace the hands-on instruction from the staff.

I feel so honored to be in a cert with such phenomenal people: Neal Maddox, Jason Khalipa, THE Boz, Kimmy, Hollis, Mike G et al. You guys are all amazing and I am very appreciative to have been in your class.

Also, fellow classmates, you were a blast to hang out with for those couple days. If anyone would like to keep in touch and bounce ideas off each other (tyrone24ward@gmail.com), I'd love to keep in touch.

Fantastic Time,
Ty

Doug Armstrong and the Brissy Crew thanks for the most in depth course I have attended. Everyone had great ideas and massive knowledge and presented with great professionalism.
I would recommended anyone doing this course over any Cert III or Vert IV Fitness course.
Thanks again

Jason, you should send me a shirt and hat from the awesome quote Im about to bestow upon completion of the course!
"My quest to succeed in my goals has come to an unforgiving future unless my desire to push forward exceeds my fear of failing." -Dusty Raul.
After taking the level one Course at NorCal CrossFit, I noticed that taking risks and performing new tasks is the key to becoming the best athlete you can be. Teaching these skills to CrossFit to beginners is key and on day one I will start with the definition of Virtuosity!
The team at CrossFit NorCal this weekend has changed my life, and I had the most fun ever in the 48 hours I was in San Jose! Thank you

Chicago. I am so excited to learn all of this stuff. The most informative and fun certificate lectures I've ever been to. I didn't have a voice the entire weekend and they accommodated me. Our teachers were fun and relaxed. Joe DeGain spoke in a way that was realistic yet knowledgable. I hate when teachers speak too 'smartly' and leave behind their students...these people were funny and amazing!

Comment #110 - Posted by: Nikki Deckert at July 24, 2012 1:04 PM

NORCAL:
First of all a big thanks to all the coaches/instructors. As a chiropractor and a CrossFitter I couldn't wait to take this course and pass along this info to my patients. I have long known that working the body in full ROM was important, but now I feel even more convinced that this message needs to be shared. Bottom line we all need to keep moving to remain healthy! The level of instruction was top notch. Thank you again!

Had an awesome time at the Crossfit Certification at Atlas Crossfit in Chicago! Joe Degain did a great job leading the group through the weekend. Also, other Joe, Rudy, Doug, Michael, and Abi did a fantastic job demoing, presenting and teaching as well. I learned a lot and am glad I went. Couldn't have asked for a better set of coaches.

Thank you all and let's keep up what we do to "make ourselves look better naked."

Only one way to do it ... LEARN FROM THE BEST. (lvl 1 Atlas CrossFit in Chicago). Abi, The Joe’s, Doug, Rudy and Matt meshed very well teaching together! Their teaching and Training styles were top notch. I have been to many of certifications that throw a lot of text book info at you… and you leave not retaining much due to the strict classroom teaching technique. Best advice was “live in the moment” I left with so much applicable knowledge. Thanks guys. Best of luck in your future.

Awesome time at the Brisbane training course, big shout out to Doug, Rob and Dave who helped me so much with my own technique!!

What in the heck is ESPN 3?
I have Directv and have ESPN, ESPN 2 and ESPNU.
Why wasn't the Crossfit Games shown on any of these stations?
I've been anxiously awaiting the games to be televised and than have to go to something we're not familiar with or don't have?
Some clarification please.
Thank you.

I'm a 41 yo female, I did the RX'd wehigt (75 lbs) and got 4 full rounds plus 7 pull ups and 4 push press. Total of 67 reps. I think I could have gotten more but had some equipment issues and sharing of the pull up bar. I loved this wod even though I wasn't looking forward to the row- it didn't turn out too bad. Thanks for programming these wod's for us old folks!
