Yes! This looks like a Great Hero WOD! HAppy 4th of July!

Comment #1 - Posted by: dan from florida at July 3, 2012 5:21 PM

I'm going to do my Dumbbell Burpee deadlift's with 10 lbs dumbbells (all I have) and add 11 deadlifts at 135 lbs after the burpees. any other suggestions for modifications for some one that has bumpers but not dumbbells? Besides the obvious get your own Dumbbells.

Comment #2 - Posted by: John Vickery at July 3, 2012 5:22 PM

In honor of this brother in arms I will push myself until I can't no more! This is for you Tumilson and your loyal friend Hawkeye!! God Bless you!

See you on the other side brother.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Mako at July 3, 2012 5:28 PM

#2(John) I'd just use the bar with the weight on it for the burpees if thats all you have.

I was hoping tomorrow's wod wouldnt involve legs too much bc I PR'ed today on front squat, oh well, looks too painful to pass up haha

Comment #6 - Posted by: Chad at July 3, 2012 5:29 PM

All American workout on an All American day for an All American HERO.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Shane G 6'3"/220/27 at July 3, 2012 5:33 PM

Awesome WOD, Fired up. Would like to clarify though, JT's helo did not crash, it was shot down during combat operations.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Boe at July 3, 2012 5:56 PM

Fair winds and following seas on your journey warrior!

Comment #9 - Posted by: Apolloswabbie 074" 200 48 yoa at July 3, 2012 5:59 PM

Fair winds and following seas young Hero. No longer wondering what tomorrow's WOD will be.

Comment #10 - Posted by: bingo at July 3, 2012 6:14 PM

Looking forward to this one. Gonna have to use a barbell though, as I don't have the dumbells.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Josh at July 3, 2012 6:22 PM

I think I'll follow this with a good swim.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Chris at July 3, 2012 6:32 PM

This looks fun! But I'm sure like any other hero WOD, this will be painful...

RIP Soldier

Rest Easy brother! Your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Brett Bartlett at July 3, 2012 6:45 PM

Comment #15 - Posted by: BrianG at July 3, 2012 6:47 PM

This WOD sounds amazing, and would love to do this, maybe still will. I had already planned to do the burpee mile. I will dedicate that to JT and Hawkeye.

Comment #18 - Posted by: Pat Sherwood at July 3, 2012 7:24 PM

#8 Boe, thanks for being the subjct-matter expert. I'm pretty sure that most people, however, realize that when a helicopter is shot down that the end result will eventually be a crash into the ground. Or were you just trying to very subtly, maybe with a little smug, imply something else about what happened?

Enjoy your 4th

Comment #19 - Posted by: Blachawk Driver in Afghanistan at July 3, 2012 7:48 PM

Nice work HQ, RIP JT

Comment #20 - Posted by: Erin at July 3, 2012 8:04 PM

Quite the inspiring video... By the way, this is the guy who's dog laid by his casket at his funeral, no? I look forward to this one tomorrow.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Ski at July 3, 2012 8:22 PM

Nice to see the 4th's WoD is named after a fallen hero. Not to mention a man who lived in a town I played many sporting events in, including the same gym where the famous picture was taken. I'll be sure to do this one tomorrow.

Comment #22 - Posted by: Mike Mackin at July 3, 2012 8:30 PM

Is it a deadlift or a squat? For me, in the demo video, the guy seems to be doing a squat instead of a deadlift...

Comment #23 - Posted by: Clayton at July 3, 2012 8:34 PM

Comment 19: I think he was just pointing out that this soldier died due to adversarial actions taken by the enemy, not an accidental crash.

RIP warrior.

Comment #24 - Posted by: Josh at July 3, 2012 8:40 PM

I'd be honored to do this workout for a wonderful man!

Comment #25 - Posted by: Mimi at July 3, 2012 8:58 PM

What would be a good substitute if I don't have access to weights...i.e. I have to do the WOD purely with body weight. Suggestions?

Comment #26 - Posted by: Rob at July 3, 2012 9:06 PM

Comment #27 - Posted by: jake at July 3, 2012 9:52 PM

#8 Boe,

"Crashed" is based on the DOD write-up here: http://www.defense.gov/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=14728.

Quote:

"The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of 30 servicemembers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died Aug. 6 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed."

Comment #28 - Posted by: Russ Greene at July 3, 2012 10:05 PM

I should note, I'm not trying to dispute your point, just explain the language used in the write-up.

Comment #29 - Posted by: Russ Greene at July 3, 2012 10:07 PM

As a close friend of JT, (we never called him Jon), thank you. This is a true honor. He was a hero, even before he died. I named my son after him, and I will continue to honor he and his fellow servicemen anyway I can. This is a small but wonderful way to do so. God bless America, and our soldiers!

Hi y'all -- I'm brand new to Crossfit and I'm also recovering from a broken leg so I can't run.

Any suggestions on how a total newbie can sub for stuff like the sprints? I can do a few really ugly one-legged Burpees, but I have no idea how to work in the sprints.

I was in pretty good shape (13 marathons, an Ironman and P90X doubles under my belt) so I want a (busted leg-friendly) challenge.
Thanks!

Boe's post is correct. The term "crashed" was used by the DoD in its press release prior to the completion of its incident investigation. The finding: the helo was shot down by an rpg during combat operations.

I'm going to do this one with a barbell from home. Too hard to do this at my gym on a treadmill, especially at 200 meter increments.

I was thinking of doing the burpee deadlifts with my hands constantly on the bar, but ROM might lack for the push up component.

Any thoughts? Should I just step back from the bar each time instead?

Happy 4th Everyone!

This should be a burner of a WOD!

That WOD was a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be. Haven't done XFIT in awhile and during my active rest week it was a real jumpstart to my system. I kept trying to push for our war heroes. I've realized I need a training partner because lately I've had no motivation to work up to my true potential. Looking forward to another XFIT Friday with my buddies; this has been a good wake up call for me.

On another note, my stitches stayed in tact during my workout! Hand is healing up pretty nicely and should be back to pulling heavy iron in no time! Happy 4th everyone!

Rip Tumilson, our thoughts and prayers go out to you, yours, and all those Warriors past and present on this day we Celebrate our Nations Independence.

Admittedly I have not been doing WOD's on any kind of regular basis. We all have excuses and I have my own. However, I could not pass up paying my respects by completing today's WOD.

As Rx'd Scaled Up. I don't have 60 Lb dumbbells so I used what I had, a pair of 75's.

Cinder blocks sub'd for dumbbells: they were all I had available, so to make up for the lighter weight I did 200m hill sprints. Tried to rope multiple blocks together to make the weight requirement, but it failed miserably on round 2, so I went down to single blocks.

Don't know if it was the heat or just my newness to CF, but I ran out of gas on round 5; the thought of Tumilson's sacrifice kept me going though.

Thanks and admiration to all those in the special operations/special warfare community.

Subbed 45# dumbbells (heaviest I have). Time - 17:52.

Yet another workout with no place to hide. This was a real ass-kicker in the heat today. Started out at 2 minutes per round pace, but that started to slip in round 3 or 4. In the end, I opted to do lighter dumbbells instead of kettlebells closer to the rx'd weight, for the smooth transition from burpee to deadlift, and to keep the additional ROM in the deadlift.

(I did this on a treadmill however)
I had to restart the treadmill every time because it would automatically stop since I wasn't on it for a few seconds... SOOOO ANNOYING.
I basically went a little bit faster, so I was a little more out of breath and then did the quick pushing of the buttons and then raising the speed up to about 11.5 mph, then jumped on for about .12 miles.
This was very annoying because it took me out of the keep on keepin on and made me focus on speeding up so i would not lose too much time at the treadmill while getting it going for about 10-15 seconds each time.
GOOD WOD.
I found that a very important thing was to place the dumbells at my legs so they were not in front of my body... I was not in best body position every time, but it was a good workout. I was rounding my back a bit from time to time, which I really never do when I DL with a bar.
