Comment #3 - Posted by: Troy at April 11, 2012 5:24 PM

I wonder what percentage of WOD'ers can actually do the handstand walk? Expecting to see a lot of substituting.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Garry D at April 11, 2012 5:32 PM

Can't do handstand walk. What's the sub. Also really liked pheezy any suggestions for a workout that is similar?

Comment #5 - Posted by: Alex Moore at April 11, 2012 5:34 PM

for those like me with no coordination for handstand walking, I substitute handstand walking in place against a wall. Put your hands on the floor about a foot from the wall and kick your legs up so you are leaning against the wall upside down. then lean slightly to one side and lift your opposite hand all the way up to your shoulder, then repeat with the other hand. once you get into the rhythm you can rock back and forth at a pretty good pace. i would do about 3 of them per yard (so 75 for this WOD).

Comment #6 - Posted by: brewster at April 11, 2012 5:48 PM

Thanks Brewster!

Comment #7 - Posted by: Robyn at April 11, 2012 5:56 PM

Great sub Brewster.

Comment #8 - Posted by: MattyP 42/M/5'11"/235 at April 11, 2012 6:09 PM

on the video she has 2 examples of holding a handstand against the wall for a certain period of time, or doing 25 handstands against a wall.

Comment #9 - Posted by: David at April 11, 2012 6:11 PM

Annie is a phenom!!!
One of the disadvantages of being 260# with a 80+" arm span, and a bum shoulder. I am thinking either presses or heavy overhead static holds as a sub.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Halvy at April 11, 2012 6:12 PM

just do handstand walking with someone holding your ankles

Comment #11 - Posted by: zev at April 11, 2012 7:08 PM

Wheelbarrow 50 yds could be a substitute??

Comment #12 - Posted by: jeff at April 11, 2012 7:52 PM

well i might just bench for a sub

Comment #13 - Posted by: 906 at April 11, 2012 8:20 PM

It took 7 minutes for Annie to do this WOD. Surely instead of just replacing the exercise you would benefit more from an hour of handstand practice.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Shayne S at April 11, 2012 8:57 PM

@ Brewster, this may be the sub you're describing.

Going to give it a whirl in the morning I think.

Funny that Annie mentions full hip extension at the top and there are several times where she does not have full extension.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Shane G 6'3"/220/27 at April 11, 2012 10:02 PM

15:33 as rxed, pretty much... across the gym and back, seemed to be about 25 yards. New personal PR for handstand walk, did about 10 yards unbroken once.

Comment #40 - Posted by: Ross at April 12, 2012 7:58 AM

I am like most others and I have never had the balance for hand stands. After reading a bit, I could have done the hold or rocking motion but I as I was doing arms today, I did db snatches 10 reps ->1 rep, starting at 35lb and going up by 5 lb. I should have done it for time for a better workout

Comment #41 - Posted by: Greg W. at April 12, 2012 8:14 AM

Not Rx'd -- HS walks would have taken me forever, but wanted an interesting sub, so I reached way back to April 18, 2009 and did:

5 RFT
15 Inverted burpees (see 4/18/09 for description)
50 squats

Comment #42 - Posted by: Bill M. m/47/5'3"/135 at April 12, 2012 8:31 AM

On Crossfit main there is a link for "BranX Scaled workouts". It's to the left of the WOD. They also recommended doing a lateral walk with your feet on the walk and had a demo video posted.

They post scaled workouts for every WOD.

Comment #43 - Posted by: Jen at April 12, 2012 8:49 AM

I think it's interesting that in the WOD demo video, Annie walks through the proper way to do an air squat demonstrating hip below 90 deg and all the way up through full extension. But, when she does the workout, she doesn't come all the way up through full extension. Hmmm?

Jill; 5 rounds; 13:13. Subbed handstand weight shits X 25

Joe 5 rounds; 14:49. I can do a handstand walk, but not for the 35 yards called for, so I did 2 "good" attempts for each round which probably totalled about 15-20 yards combined for each round.

As rx'd, 13:58.

Handstand walking getting better. One of the few WODs where I can skip warm-up and not regret it. Worst part of this was I did this in our back yard with my shirt off, and got a nasty allergic rxn to the grass rolling out of the handstands. Guess it's that time of year. Afterwards, played a bit with the slack line.
