John, "Never Give Up" by Dan John has a great explanation of "keeping the goal the goal" and that is where the influence comes from. It is a great book and I am a big fan of his writing.

Interesting articles on red meat. Hard to believe that anyone would claim that consumption of red meat would be the sole cause of a 0.2% risk of death do to cancer, CVD, etc. There are many other variables addressed in the follow-up articles, but one I see ignored and often forgotten in the Paleo diet, as well as a lot of other diets, is additives and preservatives themselves can be carcinogenic or at least linked to cancer and other diseases. People often forget or ignore the fact that eating all-natural/organic is an important part of the paleo diet and, I believe, health in general. Note - by default, cavemen only ate organic foods and free range meats.

Comment #26 - Posted by: Gini at March 18, 2012 7:53 PM

Why doesn't the Crossfit main site organize a study on nutrition? Most crossfitters eat a good amount of meat. But the Crossfit community probably has the largest number of strict paleo adherents. A lot of people keep food logs. It wouldn't be the most scientific study but it would be interesting to have people all get blood tests in a given week, and then continue to track blood markers on a periodic basis. You could track strict paleo, zone, non paleo, and people who regularly eat junk. Might be interesting.

What would be the blood markers to follow?

Wow, I´m really alergic to dietary bigotism.
Fact there are a lot of Paleo / Zone eaters doing crossfit. They claim they lead a totaly healthy lifestyle.
Fact, they (all) have cheat meals more often than once a month (did cave men?) They drive their cars everywhere including to the gym, (did cave men?)
Why can´t we all just get along?
There is a huge probability we over consume meat and raise CO2 levels, yes.
If people just cook food from scratch, eat varied ingredients and vegetables, stay away from white sugar and park their cars 3 days a week. Not to mention skip their cheat days and beers. Everyone would be more crossfit than ever.

Remember everyone, the real purpose behindthe "study" is political not nutritional. The Enviromentalist Wacko movement has for decades tried to push the danger of red meat because cattle husbandry "is a waste of space that can more productively be used to grow veggies." Also cattle are large producers of methane gas which is why the world will blow up in 20yrs because of global warming. Anyway, it's all a basic rant, much of the finer things left out.

Comment #50 - Posted by: Daniel at March 19, 2012 6:41 AM

The L1 Cert in St. Charles was phenomenal! Coach Joe, Joe, Kurtis, Leah, Abby and Rudy were all extremely knowledgeable and always willing to take the time to help answer questions and share their wealth of knowledge. I think everyone in CrossFit would benefit from the information shared this weekend.

Comment #51 - Posted by: David Opperman (m/34/6'/173) at March 19, 2012 6:41 AM

I like that the CF site showed both sides of the argument and not just one. I advise people about nutrition all the time, but they're the ones that have to make the decision on what they are going to consume. For more info on a similar study that was done on a much larger scale over the period of almost 30 Yrs. read a book named "The China Study" Its very detailed and not politically motivated.

Had a fantastic weekend with the amazing Coaches/Trainers Joe, Joe, Abby, Kurtis, Leah, and Rudy at the L1 class in St. Charles, MO. You guys are the BEST. I now know that I have been CrossFitting "wrong" for nearly 5 years and am so excited to learn how to do it correctly and how to teach others as well. If you love fitness and CrossFit even more and have not been to an L1 class yet - I HIGHLY recommend going, it is well worth the money to get such a wealth of knowledge in a short time frame. I am grateful for all the tools you guys placed in my "tool belt" this weekend and to the owners of CrossFit TNT for allowing us to take over your box for the weekend - you have an amazing facility. Thank you!

I attended the L1 Cert in Orlando,FL and I wanted to thank all the coaches for their knowledge and help throughout the course. I enjoyed every moment and if I wasn't sore enough from doing 12.4 the day before, I never thought I would do so many squats in my life! If you are passionate about Crossfit as I am, I encourage everyone to go the this class!

Many thanks to the L1 trainers for trading St Patrick for St Charles. I learned many tools for my toolkit, the first being: it might not be the best idea to do 12.4 at 7 am, a squat clinic all day, and Fran at 4pm if you would like to have functioning quads. Thanks again, great weekend!

Justin,
Check this for TGU explained:
http://www.wannabebig.com/training/the-turkish-get-up/

Basically start flat on back with weight in one arm out over face. Stand and then return to ground without dropping the weight, supporting it with free hand, or bending at the elbow. Really tough to explain, but thought I'd give it a shot. Good luck and stay safe over there.

I did a different WOD last night.
I did 3 rounds of:
30 GHD Situps
30 Back extensions
6:20
Good workout and felt good.. I was pretty o.k. after a few minutes.

I went downstairs and then did 3 rounds of:
10 ring pushups with static hold of right arm extension then left arm extension.
+ 10 body ring rows.
All movements were slow and steady to really work the range of movement (ROM) of my shoudler and my back.. both on my left side are super tight and been holding me back that past 2 weeks. I'm trying to rest them and stretch them a lot. They are o.k. I want to do the last Open WOD and then get back to regular heavy training and hopefully the shoudler will respond.

As Rx: 48:10
bar was a nice twist... HARD, LONG WOD... VERY TAXING.
This was one of the longest and beat you down WODs in a long time. I felt like my first week into CF... and I've been CFing for about 5-6 years now.
For me, high rep TGUs are really taxing... and this was a twist with the bar...
last night I did heavy OHS & then followed up with intervals of KB swings and DU..
I did the TGUs in 3 reps sets on each hand and then switched to minimize the time the bar was on the ground... it's a bit awkward to get setup each time and taxing so I wanted to minimize that function. I was doing 6-9 then rest a few seconds ,then 6, 6,+ 3.. then run and repeat. My left shoulder has been nagging me for a little while now, but it was o.k. for this WOD. I really was thinking of stopping after 4 rounds but just gutted it out. I was looking forward to the runs (I did mine on a treadmill.. from 9.0 - 10.0 mph)
HARD LONG WOD.

Rx'd 43:32, each 400m run included running up and down 6 flights of stairs.

It didn't feel like I could have gone much faster. TGU's take forever. Switched hands each rep. 1L-1R-1L-1R...
First round did 6L-5R-4L-3R-2L-1R. This strategy worked until fatigue set it. Then, had to break up into 1's. First round took 8 minutes. Remained consistent throughout all five rounds.

Subbed 35 lbs kettlebell. Didn't leave enough time for full thing (which woulda taken forever), so:
Three rounds:
16 get ups/400m run
10 getups/400m
10 getups/400m

21.38

CFWU-3. Reg HS shuffles instead of HSPU. Superman. No Burgener. Dot drill.
39:37 - only 4 rounds
TGU slow!
Tech didn't feel too bad. Good active shoulder & getting leg under body for final push up. Run on TM.

42:50 at auditorium gym
Had to switch treadmills mid-run on round 4 because of a malfunction, so that cost some time.

Did not want to do more rounds as I could feel it in my shoulders. Knees hurt like hell too. Not sure how to prevent that.
