What's with all the popped achilles talk? Fb and here, lots of comments on this...and two videos on box jumps..after 4 years of CF, the last two having coached countless box jump wods, I've never heard of, much less seen a box jump get someone's achilles. Not denying that it happens, but I am surprised that its being talked about so much. Did I miss something?

Comment #9 - Posted by: nj at March 7, 2012 6:11 PM

Pace is the key...not too fast out of the gate. Good luck everyone!

Comment #10 - Posted by: Hammerhead at March 7, 2012 6:13 PM

You want to eff your achilles up, do the box jumps as described in the how to video.

I always wonder how many times per day the elite crossfitters work out... Are they just doing one WOD a day or are they doing WODs and other stuff on top of it? Anyone have any idea?

Comment #15 - Posted by: Chris at March 7, 2012 7:31 PM

Yay triplet!! Did 4 rounds of this one tonight, definitely a workout you have to have a strategy for.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Scott M at March 7, 2012 7:32 PM

OK Crossfit Chris #10, share with the Crossfit world … what's your protecting-your-achilles-tendons-whilst-doing-box-jumps secret?

Comment #17 - Posted by: Tony the Chiro at March 7, 2012 7:38 PM

Hanging from the bar long enough to do a series of toes to bar OR knees to elbows is ru-heely hard on my shoulders. I think I may be strong enough to do the movement but I just can't stand to hang long enough to do it. Of course, I'm only 2 1/2 months into Crossfit.

Is it just a matter of getting better upper-body strength? Any recommendations?

Comment #18 - Posted by: KER at March 7, 2012 7:40 PM

This is CrossFit. Perfect WOD I dig it !

Comment #19 - Posted by: Joey Villarreal at March 7, 2012 8:11 PM

@Crossfit Chris,
I agree %100, perhaps for a conditioned athlete like Annie those are ok but an achilles tear isn't something your going to see coming. It will happen without warning and then your box jump days are over. If you aren't doing this to compete (and really even if you are) step off the box.

Comment #20 - Posted by: Tony at March 7, 2012 8:31 PM

step off the box, it's not sexy but it's better than a snapped achilles.

Comment #22 - Posted by: novak at March 7, 2012 9:25 PM

Wish they'd seriously consider changing high-rep boxjumps to something else, broadjumps perhaps? I love jumping, but I also love my achilles tendons, keeping in mind last years' CF Open...

Comment #23 - Posted by: AndersB at March 7, 2012 9:29 PM

Yeah, If your competing in the open, do step downs. I however will be rebounding back up and absolutly murding 12.3.

Comment #24 - Posted by: Paul at March 7, 2012 10:12 PM

As Rx'd

6 rounds + 6 reps

Great tips from the videos. I implemented the idea of the box being the start and finish of the exercise, which worked out really well, I'd been doing it the other way around for years. I'll be executing box jumps like this from now on.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Daniel B at March 7, 2012 10:37 PM

6 rounds plus 15 box jumps. Best to just grind this one out. Thanks for the suggestion of step downs on box jumps, they feel a lot safer!
Bought some wrist wraps the other day, they do help with overhead stability so I would recommend them as a cheap aid.

I found in the rulebook the following statement:

"Subject to CrossFit’s prior approval, non-branded belts, gloves, neoprene joint
sleeves and common fitness wear may be allowed at competitions Events,
however, no grip assistance or weight support may be derived from any
device worn."

I see gloves are permitted but are gymnastics grips for hand protection allowed?

Thanks

Comment #44 - Posted by: Tiffany at March 8, 2012 6:22 AM

Let me get this straight. I should never do bounding box jumps, shoot a basketball, jump a hurdle, jump over anything while chasing a turd through the streets, or if somebody does harm to you or a loved one I shouldn't jump off of/over anything while trying to enforce the law?

Sounds good. I'll be sure to let all the soldiers, cops and firemen/women out there know that it's ok not to do their jobs in order to keep you and our Achilles tendon safe.

I'm not an expert on box jumps, and have not watched either video yet....but, I think the issue w/ the box jump that you have to be careful with, is not jumping off of the box. it's jumping off of the box and immediately trying to explosively jump back onto the box.

Just a thought....

Comment #47 - Posted by: vikingblood at March 8, 2012 6:45 AM

M/ 38/ 133 lbs/ 5'-6"
As Rx: 324 Reps - 9 complete rounds
I did this last night. I'm doing the WODs all on Wednesdays after they are posted.. only one time. I'm not doing the Open this year because of some commitments and I'd rather just treat it as a good gauge to find my weaknesses and to see how I'm progressing. I did o.k. on the 1st WOD with 116. This was on my 3rd day of training but still felt fine. I actually did it more like a longer tabata WOD with burpees. I liked it and had lots of little bursts with little rests. If I was going for a true max effort I would have gone more methodical and I'm sure I could have gotten 125 or maybe 130, but I'll test it again fresh some time soon.
WOD #2 was bad for me. At 133 lbs 130 is my max snatch so i did the 1st round in 1:40 and just worked my way up to about 125 in the remaining 8 minutes or so. I wish it went to 115 so I could have gotten another 30 reps or so. Well it was and will remain a goal to OWN 135 snatch. I can't do a couple WODs RX mainly for this limitation so it's been a goal of mine. I do feel better in the Oly movements, but still need more confidence. I work in a regular gym so my oly lifting is with metal plates and I can't ever drop the weights from up top, or even from a standing DL position. no big deal. I'm happy to be able to get my WODs out at night after putting my kids to sleep. I get my WOD, and my QT with my kids and family time. You gotta be thankful for that.
I was a bit sore in my shouders from doing snatch balance work and snatch drops 2 nights earlier.

I did 9 rounds.. I got slowed down a little with the box jumps but was slow and steady. I have improved a bit from last year and am still getting better with them. The PP was a little on the heavy side for me, so after the 3rd round I was breaking them into 10 + 2.. then the last 2 rounds I broke them into 3 parts of 7,3,2.
All T2B were easy, but I did them on a square bar that was big, so my hands got a little bit beaten up and the grip was getting killed. I usually do my T2B on the rings as my pullup bar is wall mounted and I can't get a sway back without hitting the wall... so to get a big ROM I use the rings. Not quite the same with the bar, but good enough.
GREAT WOD... this is a great test.. I practically called this WOD.. I was telling my wife at 7:50 last night it'll be a couplet or a triplet and it'll probably have T2B or DU and it'll probably have box jump or something like that.. and some weighted movement...
My guess is that someone will get in the 650 range or maybe even 700 reps.

Too much danger in this wod! Box jumps - what if my achilles tears? Locking out 115# overhead multiple times whilst fatigued - what if I drop it on my face? T2b - what if my legs detach as they pass through the vertical plane?

My point? If you want the reward you must accept the risk! Minimise those risks as you see fit, but stepping off the box is neither the most efficient, nor the fastest way to complete a box jump. Now, if I could just find that trampoline ...

As an ex bodybuilder who trained calves heavy and slow I always got sore heel cords from box jumps. I figured it was just that tissue being stressed from the different stress. Well a year and a half later and it's the same and I haven't trained calves in that time(same size though!).my question is that we've been boxjumping forever and just now all of the Achilles talk. Why now?

Third week of Crossfit - loving it so far.

Great Work out! Definately one to pace yourself.

Male - 35 - 6'0" - 205 lbs.

6 Rounds Complete + 25 Total Reps
- Completed 15 Box Jumps

as Rx'd

Started at 256 lbs in October of 2010. Coming off of Beachbody P90X and Insanity for about a year, Body building style pre-exhaustion work out with some HIT training for about 4 months after that. While it prepared me for Crossfit, it certainly doesn't compare - Crossfit is definately the real deal.

As rx'd, 8 rounds + 5 Toes-to-bar (320 reps).

That one hurt. I tried to pace this out a bit, but started off faster than 2 minutes per round. It caught up with me in the middle - where I was just trying to hang on. Had 6 rounds with 6 minutes left, but by that time, even though I was able to push through the metcon "suck", my push press and toes-to-bar started to fail due to stamina. In the end, I missed 9 rounds by 4 stinkin T2B. Still, I'm happy I was able to push all the way through on this one - 18 minute AMRAPs are not my sweet spot. Also happy to have this one out of the way...ouch.

It would be really great if Crossfit.com figured out a way to extract or capture the data on all these comments and then published next to each WOD the average reps/time/weight/whatever across all comments. I bet you would have twice as many comments too, at least comments with just results of workouts, if we knew they were going to be put to use in an average. We are all social lemmings and everyone loves to compare themselves to the "norm". I bet this data could be very useful in other way's too if analyzed by someone more knowledgeable than me. I just started using this site and instantly saw potential value in knowing what the average guy my age was able to do in each of these exercises. I can't really compare myself to the dudes in the video- their really good and that's why their in the video. Give me some layman's stats man so I can have something to try to actually beat, not just shoot for.

I'm not gonna lie...I sure wish this had been scaled for us older dudes. To make it worse, I did the exact WRONG WOD on Wednesday & my shoulders were already cooked. Oh well...enough whining. I'll try it again Sat or Sun and see if I can do better with a day of rest.

Did hack/scale of Open WOD 12.3 on March 9th @ Y...

18 min AMRAP 15 bj 18", 12 pp 75#, 9 Gravitron 60# L-pullups

7 rounds + 15 bj

Wanted to do T2B but only pullup bar wasn't available...probably would have slowed me, as I'm officially terrible at T2Bs (was better at them in oct-nov-dec...hmmm)

Was hoping for 8-10 rounds but not to be. Next time.

On the plus side, no pain and decent pace on both box jumps and push press.

w/u - 30 sec Samson, 10 air squats, 7x (el-feet pushup, scap push, sit, dip), 1 min row, 5x bj, pp, pullups

c/d - 10 bar swings (pullup bar opens up after I'm done with workout, of course), 2 min easy row ~20spm / ~100 watt avg, 2 x 36# cable face pulls, 10 air squats

5 rounds + 15 box jumps
Unbroken sets but a ton of reset in between rounds, don't recommend that route.

Here's the trick to box jumps. I couldn't figure out why I had the sorest heal cords after doing the rebounding box jumps. I did these in college track and was never sore.

It's because I switched to minimalist shoes for Crossfit, big mistake. I went back to my running shoes with inserts, the inserts made a huge difference in the rebounding box jumps.

Comment #227 - Posted by: Crossfit Chris at March 10, 2012 10:37 AM

6 rounds plus 15 jumps. I am stupid at t2bs. I swing around and waste time and look stupid and frustrate myself. Those presses weren't very fun either.
