If you are able to Power Clean the weight, do you still need to actually perform a Squat Clean? I know that is how it is Rx so just wondering if Power Cleans are allowed.

Dave, we miss you my old friend! So happy to see this on this Web site. A great friend and hero.

I love these hero WOD's they make it possible to push through. This is going to be brutal at 6am. I think I'm going to have to scale this.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Skilly at March 5, 2012 7:23 PM

@11 - tuba

personally my advice to you would be to not scale it if you are proficient enough in the clean. its a hero workout, intended to honor someone who has died. its going to hurt, it won't be fun, and it will take you a lot longer, but it means a hell of a lot more to do it as prescribed than scaling it because you think its too heavy.

Can anyone explain how the CF open scoring goes? Wondering how Dan Bailey is ranked below guys who did only one more burpee but 5 less snatches. Overall in the 20 minutes of work, he has done more work.

Just saw something interesting...apparently the Maine State Police are now integrating Crossfit into their training, according to the training journal for the current recruit class: "The 62nd RTT was required to complete a physical fitness test. The Troop went on to learn about Crossfit exercises, lifestyles and healthy diets that will make us perform at our peak and keep us ever vigilant to protect ourselves and others in the line of duty."

Just another example of the practical, crucial application of Crossfit.

What's a good substitution for box jumps? My gym really doesn't like me jumping onto stuff... Other than the aerobic steps, but stacking enough of them is a bit risky...

Comment #24 - Posted by: Addey at March 5, 2012 9:20 PM

@14 that's bad advice, it's not that it will just take him longer, he could hurt himself trying to put that weight up 44 times.

@11 try the women's weight, 105. or try the first round at the rxd weight and see how it goes, scale down as you need to

I don't believe telling someone not to scale is responsible. Scaling should be encouraged here, when necessary. #11, I would advise you to try a few reps at 115 or so. But, yes, scale. Doing 44 reps at 90+% of your one rep max, just won't happen.

I absolutely agree that scaling is an essential, but you must try to recognise when to push yourself beyond what you previously thought possible. It's all about risk vs. reward, and it's one of the most difficult decisions for those training without a coach.

My thoughts - if you know you are well capable of the rx'd weight, even for just 2 or 3 reps, then take it one rep at a time, give each one your full focus and concentration and be ready to scale the weight as soon as things get too dicey. I'm sure many will disagree, but then everyone will adopt their own approach. Bottom line - box jumps, burpees and squat cleans are gonna kick your ass no matter what weight you use!

Humble thanks to "Klepto". R.I.P.

@48, "Klepto's" service, as well as mine, was to defend the freedoms all Americans enjoy. This includes views allowed and protected by the 1st amendment. The poster offered condolences. This might sound cold to some, but all service members willingly accept the risks that come with service when they sign their contract and take their oath. I'm sorry and saddened that the MAJ had to die at the hands of an abject coward. I pray for his family. RIP.

Re: Several previous war-commentary comments

Few would deny that these fallen soldiers are Heros. However, a quickly growing number are repeating the sentiments that they don't agree with the war itself.

Should this really surprise us when so many, including some in the current administration, present the war as a lost cause, or a bad idea?

Soldiers are just like you and I - except with the guts to die for what they believe in.

Here's to sticking with it.

@109, it sounds like you're trying to keep your palmar surface flush with the bar when the bar is on your shoulder rack. Look up "hook grip" and try that for the squat cleans, it will take the tension off of your wrists.

Mat # 108: I'm no expert, but had the same problem. Releasing your pinky finger helps a little if you haven't already tried it - just keep the other 3 fingers under the bar. Mine got better over time as I just kept after it - probably got more flexible. I used to think I would never get it.

Does anyone else on here find cleans/front squats to be murder on the wrists while the weight rests on shoulders? I feel like I am damaging my wrists while in this position. I have the strength...I just feel like I don't have sufficient wrist flexibility. For this reason I didn't do burpees as I didn't want to have even more impact to wrists

RIP Klepto.

I should take 10" off for the jackhole who came over to the stack of plates I was using for the box jump, and took two off the top to add to his leg press instead of walking the extra 20 feet to get some from the other rack while I was doing the squat clean. Just to keep the work out honest, I went over and added two more to my stack. "The best thing about stupid people, they can't keep it to themselves."

Experimented w/taking 30 second breaks between exercises so I could do all unbroken. Worked for all but sq cleans.
Box jump & steady sometimes pausing to regain balance at bottom. Good use of arms for momentum. Sq cleans pretty bad. Seemed like tech little better towards end. Look at ceiling in front of me at power position, ceiling overhead at hip ext.

Was trying to pace this, but failed. Just pushed too hard, and before I realized it, I was in round 4 and redlining. Those squat cleans just messed me up. I did the box jumps mostly unbroken, the burpees in sets of 10, but I had to break all rounds of squat cleans, and by the end I was at singles and in a world of hurt. Closest I've been to Pukie in awhile. Still, this was a great workout...what doesn't kill ya, right? Splits were ~ 4:00 / 4:30 / 5:00 / 4:30.
