I'm still learning how to do snatches, so I'm going to sub them for clean & jerk and include overhead squat strength work. Anyone know if the weights for the snatches posted are directly translatable to C&J? Or should they be adjusted? Thanks guys.

This is definitely a tough workout and test of fitness but is it appropriate? Yes its appropriate to weed out those who are not good at practicing crossfit. I think it almost perpetuates the saying that crossfit makes you better at crossit. I don't care how much of a work capacity you built up, if you never practiced high rep oly lifting this will stop you from entering. Where is the line between fitness and skill? And where does the crossfit games want to fall under. EIther way one hell of a workout and props to those who own this one!

Only 2 months of learning the snatch with a PR of 145. Happy with the first try.

30 reps @75 and only made it through 17 reps @135. I think with a better warm up I'll get all 30 but will have no chance at 165.

I should have practiced some heavy snatches in the warmup ( I didn't think I'd get past 60) and then found myself with 3 minutes and 100# in front of me. I had to take a broomstick and practice a few split snatches and fail a few times before I could get the weight up. .. Twice.

I'm not doing the open..... But I think I want to do this again.

Is it better when only doing Crossfit for a couple of months to:
1) Do the women's weight Rx'd for entire 10 min.? or
2) Do the men's weight Rx'd for a lot less reps but the heavier weights?

Goals: To get body cut, ripped and continue building strength.

Its about time. This wod sets a real standard. I train hard and operate my own box. Im in good shape. At times some students will ask me if I'm going to compete in the games. I just laugh. I tell them that the athletes in the games are in better shape than most of those in the olympics. There's no chance of me competing in the olympics and that's obvious to them when they think of it from that point of view- so there's no chance of me competing in the games! It's getting tiresome of every one who can do a burpee thinking they can compete in the games. They should try to respect the level of fitness that the top athletes have. So I'm thrilled about this open wod. It really delivers the reality check.it's like those people who audition for American idol- the ones who make us laugh. God bless everyone for exercising and pushing themselves. But let's respect the true top level athletes- me included.

I did this one last night and posted my video to the games website. It was a great workout; the CrossFit programmers are geniuses!! 165# was a new record for me, so I was pretty elated by the end of this one!

Great to see Chris Hoppe on main site. for those of you wondering why he isn't competing in the open is because he had surgery to repair some discs in his back a few weeks ago. watch out next year though.

To excel at the day to day programming on CrossFit.com requires both strength and technique.....not to mention a whole lot of other components of fitness. The same skills are useful during the Open workouts, Regionals, Games, etc. The skills needed are rather universal.

Being intelligent and approaching a workout in a thoughtful manner (ie, a gameplan, instead of just slamming the gas pedal) should be an obvious requirement of being a mature individual capable of rational, independent thought. If someone chooses to rip through a workout or to systematically attack it, that choice is on the individual, not CrossFit HQ. We are all free to execute the workouts in whatever manner makes sense given our ability level.

Some workouts I can "slam the gas pedal on", and some I have to tap the brakes on. Life and sport demand both capacities, so that is how I train. However, "slamming on the gas pedal" should never imply being reckless. Although, I would be lying if I said that I have never been reckless.......however, that was my fault.......not CFHQ's.

It is tough to properly read the desired tone through typed text. I hope this does not come off as harsh or anything like that. I'm just providing my honest point of view.

I tried to do this WOD as Rx'd, but i couldn't make the transition to the 135#. I felt fine and ran through the 75# set in 3 sets of 10 with a few breaths in between sets. But i couldn't get 135# overhead. I need more muscle endurance... is that something that will come in time by putting out max effort, or is there something i can do in addition to the WODs to help? Tomorrow marks the end of my first week doing CF.

im not sure if it makes a lot of sense to encourage everyone to participate in the open and come up with a WOD which is too heavy for 80% of the people, not to mention the risk of injury. I would be fine with it as the last WOD of the open or if the open would be more limited to advanced xfitters, but as this year more or less everyone seems to participate, it is a bit off from my view

Debated doing Rx'd but since 135 is my BW and my 1RM, I opted instead to check my ego and do more reps. Need the practice. Was still plenty tough. Lost some time having to re-tape my thumbs, so be sure to do a good tape job before starting.

Rich looked stellar...hope he does it again balls out and films it, and analyzes both attempts. Dan Bailey is very strong, but not technically sound, and therefore not as efficient... one way u can tell is how he lands...kind of all over the place, landing on his toes alot cause he often jumps too early which makes him jump off of his toes, he's spending extra energy trying to receive the bar because he has to adjust to the inaccuracy of the timing/positioning of his jump...he does jump back every time which is a good idea but the bar doesn't always come with him...he's losing a lot of hip power as a result (not translating to the bar). if you watch Rich, every rep is almost identical to the previous.

As Rx: 45 reps.

Weighted bar dip, 80x4 - 95x3 - 105x2.

OHS, 3x5 at 110-125-140.

C/D: static band stretching of shoulders.

Due to a left shoulder injury, each snatch rep was done cautiously (1 rep about every 15 seconds). Lost more strength on the weighted bar dips than I had estimated (my intent was 3x5). OHS felt okay.

Rules question for 12.2

The WOD description states "In the Snatch, the barbell goes directly from the ground to overhead in one motion without stopping at the shoulders."

My question is what is the rules with a press out. Rep or No rep
Example: Athlete pulls weight from ground. Weight travels all the way to forehead level. Athlete then stands up with weight fully locking it out and finishing the movement.

Got up 64 reps Rx'd, 165 was pretty heavy! Going to take this one on again in 2or3 months after a little more Snatch practice. I have to say I'm loving every second of these games!! This year=fun, then ready to train for next year!!!

82 reps...BUT, I misread the instructions and did the 55+ masters loads. OOPS!

In a bizarre turn of events, after a short rest period, I loaded 120 lbs and did 5 singles. My PR up to this point was only 125 lbs.

I loaded 135...managed 3 single reps...NEW PR!

I loaded 145...failed first try...NEW 1 RM on second try!!

I'll have to try the correct weight this Sunday. I'm shooting for 61....

4 rounds of: 10 ring pushups (elevated feet); 55 lbs kettlebell swings, then:

With respect to wod 12.2 Is the contested movement the snatch, or the snatch grip clean and half ass press from the chin? I understand pressout is allowed and muscle snatch is allowed.I really respect the effort of these athleletes and its a testement to these guys tenacity that they can move such heavy loads overhead. I'm just concerned about potential for injury.I think the load is too heavy for the masters 50 54 age group. Otherwise the programing is brilliant.
