I did weighted pulls on Friday but I like them too much to miss this one!

Do any of you guys throw in a short met con? Or do you just call it a strength day?

Comment #4 - Posted by: Dustin at February 27, 2012 5:36 PM

anyone have suggestions for how to do this one? What's a decent weight if i can do like 15 in a row and how am I attaching it?

Comment #5 - Posted by: Tom at February 27, 2012 5:40 PM

I would do some "warmup" sets with some weight to see where you stand.

@#3 Dustin, I personally will do a metcon as well, but I don't follow the main-site WODs religiously. Different people can handle different levels of training, so there's no problem in my mind with scaling the workout up if that's what you can manage.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Kenny at February 27, 2012 6:20 PM

@#5 Tom, I can do 19 strict pullups, and when I go weighted I usually use 30# and can expect to do 8-10 on my first set. I'll obviously be going with a fair amount more for one repetition sets.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Kenny at February 27, 2012 6:21 PM

Other than a weight vest, what are the best ways to fasten the weight to your body as you do the pull up?

Comment #11 - Posted by: Konrad at February 27, 2012 6:28 PM

I alternate weighted pullups and chinups every Wednesday, along with front squats and OH squats.

I use a martial arts belt to hang a 10 or 20kg plate from my waist, and I have 20x 1kg ankle weights which I link together and wrap around my waist like a belt to add weight.

I'm new to crossfit. Loving it so far. Explain to me tomorrow "s WOD: "1-1-1-1-1-1-1". Thx. T.

Comment #13 - Posted by: T. at February 27, 2012 6:54 PM

For the garage gym'er and those who don't have a weight belt with chain and clip it's always good to have a couple of old caribiners and some climbing webbing- make a weight belt and dangle a plate or kb right below your crotch and use the 'biner to clip- that or jam a dumbbell between the knees and cross your legs

Comment #14 - Posted by: Ryan at February 27, 2012 6:54 PM

I'm new to crossfit. Loving it so far. Explain tomorrow's WOD: "1-1-1-1-1-1-1."

Comment #15 - Posted by: T. at February 27, 2012 6:56 PM

There's always the option to squeeze a dumbbell between your legs/dangle it from your ankles.

Comment #16 - Posted by: J at February 27, 2012 7:29 PM

Comment 3 my friend/coach told me once you should be fried after any cf strength workout or you don't go hard enough..

Comment #17 - Posted by: Peter at February 27, 2012 7:49 PM

Pinch a dumbell bewteen your thighs and bend your knees to hang from the bar. Let the bottom half of the dumbell rest on your calf. I have done it with up 70lb dumbells.

Another option that I find better for training is looping an assistance band around a heavy kettle bell on the floor. Put the other end around the back of your neck so the band goes down either side of your chest. The bigger the band, the more resistance.

Comment #18 - Posted by: RAR at February 27, 2012 8:03 PM

Personally, I use a dumbbell and put it between my crossed ankles. Works pretty good until I get to about 45lbs then I go to a dip belt and weight plates. Good luck on the workout!

Comment #19 - Posted by: Jeremy at February 27, 2012 8:12 PM

T. : this is a format you will see repeatedly for maybe a dozen different movements. The goal is to do a single weighted pullup, building to your heaviest single rep possible. Rest 2-3 minutes between each single, or longer if that's what it takes for you to feel fresh for the next set. So that's do a weighted pullup, rest, then do another with a bit more weight, rest, and so on until you have done your seven sets. The goal of these (and 3-3-3-3-3 or even 5-5-5-5-5, which you will be seeing soon enough) is not to feel "smoked" physically so much as mentally. We are training the central nervous system to activate muscle tissue that is not going to get activated doing 20 reps at a lighter load. Because you are new you will almost always be able to set a PR but later on it may not be your all time best, just the best you can do that day. How steep the progression between your first and last sets is a matter of personal preference. Most people do some light load reps to warm up before starting the sets that "count" (in this case that would be unweighted pull ups or even assisted pull ups, depending on your ability).

Oh and I forgot: check out 4.11 in the FAQ for more on this. Read the whole FAQ, actually. The FAQ is the neophyte Crossfitter's best friend.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Nashville Steve at February 27, 2012 8:23 PM

1-1-1-1-1-1-1 means work to your 1 rep max with the first 1 being your first lift/pull-up (for this instance) that is not at a warm-up weight. Preferably you hit your current 1-rep max somewhere around the 4th/5th attempt after warm-up weight, and go for a PR with your 6th/7th.

I wrote this post on Crossfit (Barbells for America? Crossfit, the Military and War) over the weekend, and would appreciate any thoughts folks might have (feel free to comment on the blog if there are any worries about hijacking this thread). My affiliate (Crossfit South Brooklyn) will be posting this on its blog tomorrow morning and I expect a lively discussion there as well.

@ 5. i put the weights in a backback and leave the straps loose around the shoulders so the weight hangs low. whatever you do im sure someone will have a problem with it and others will think its brilliant. as far as how much weight you can use if you can do 15 pullups, that would depend on your bodyweight. if your 150 lbs and you can do 15 pullups i would guess you can start around 25 or 30lbs, but if your 200lbs you would start off higher most likely. just as an example, im 175lbs,

my weighted pullup 1 rep max was 80 lbs! pr

Strict, no wiggling or kicks to get those last few inches.

I used a climbing harness, some thin rope, and a carabiner to.clip weights onto the belay loop of the harness. At 70 I could not clip any more weights on so I threw on a backpack with a few extra pounds to make 80lbs.

Got up to 125lbs by the sixth rep and decided to call it quits because the back pack was starting to rip and even though my partner said my chin got over the bar, it was starting to feel questionable to me.
