Awesome. Let the World Series of Exercise begin.
Awesome. Pumped for this one.
Wow...definitely did not see this coming!
Here we go, that could be alot of burpees.
YAY BURPEES ! ! !
Had to cover my a** in case Coach Burgener is listening.
I don't think he can grant me a pardon from this round though...
Really? All year to prepare and that's what we get...got to say a little disappointing
Nice!!! I'm going to have a busy day tomorrow, but this can be done anywhere!!
I agree JPL. This is extremely disappointing. 7 min of burpees?? Come on Crossfit, you can do better than this.
@JPL what's up with the disappointment? If you've been training so hard you can separate yourself from the rest in this workout just like in any other.
@ #8 (JPL), the open is meant to be inclusive, why kill off everyone right away? There are alot of novices out there who know they don't have a chance at regionals, but want to participate. Good wod!
What iPad ap are they using to count rounds and for the timer
sheesh. Did 100 for time tonight. 8:45 new PB by about a min. prob do fran tommorow
How can anyone complain from this being the first WOD for you Games folks? The Burpee, especially a 7 minute AMRAP, is an excellent way of judging your physical ability. Besides, every WOD leading up is varied; last year the games had a swim - not something most xfitters have in their arsenal. Good Luck to those of you competing!
Two thoughts:
1. I love the "no springy floor" rule. Need to find a trampoline to do my burpees in the future...although I guess that might make them harder?
2. Understand that we need sponsors, but FRS...come on. My platoon got a big case of the single-dose packets a few years back and it did absolutely nothing for me. Not even the placebo effect.
Impressed HQ, good job with wod 1
AWESOME. A true test of RAW fitness. So simple and unexpected - GENIUS.
Boz you are 100% correct. Anything less than 6" is unacceptable.
This is a great workout to include everyone! Anyone complaining doesn't sound like a true crossfitter... be ready for anything ANYTHING!!
Workout is simple and awful. Good stuff.
For the past few months, I get HTML errors when I try to download many of the videos. Very annoying. Do others have the same problem?
This is the Snake talking -- I have to say kids -- I am not impressed with the whining and complaining. What did you want? 100 135 Turkish Get Ups followed by Double Fran?
This is going to gas out a lot of people! CrossFit is testing your mettle! AND...make sure you hit that target at 6"!! This one is going to be fun -- and to the complainers -- I better see all you peeps at the top of the heap!! IF not -- put a lid on it and get ready to 3 2 1 GO!!!!!!!!!
can't wait to see what numbers are going to get thrown up for this one. i hate burpees as much as anyone, but this is going to be a burner of a wod and i am down for the challenge!
What percentage of those who love this WOD, or who think it is an excellent test of fitness, are under 6'0"??
OTOH, I'm sure there will be other WODs that favor the normal sized competitor (over 6'5") like myself. . .
Yes Ken Tronnes! Way to step up to the plate and bring the noise amigo!! Good luck!
#25
Believe there was a video with Castro at the Tahoe Throwdown talking about how majority of elite level CrossFitters are roughly 5'9" to 6' give or take
@#25 what does size have to do with burpees? And how is 6'5 normal? People will always complain about things no matter what. Where you expecting the Inman mile for the first
WOD?
Can you get up anyway you like - ie. snake up, go to one knee....???
@20
That's what she said!
"anything less than 6" is unacceptable... " - true story
Legit programming HQ. Well done.
If you have an idle minute, could you please tell me who gets a buy? Past champs? Previous year top 3, 5?
I looked through the games site and the rules and didn't find anything (except that in a region where a past champ competes in the regional comp an additional person from the region may go to the show).
Great first workout and fine explanation video; great athletes to start it off too.
Are the indoor-woolen helmets going to be standard issue for the judges at the games too (or was Valley Crossfit having a food safety alert the day of filming)?
Th
YA!!! THAT IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT!!! YAAAA-BURPEES!!!
@jpl you might be eating those words later. It's all relative.
Great first WOD HQ.
Perfect!
Sounds like all those
disappointed folks out
there can't do burpees.
hey tug they are using the workout hero app
World Series of Exercise!!!! I love it!
Lets count them. CrossFit games site error #1.
Whats the iPad app for the clock and counter?
Dave didn't count Becca's first rep!
Male/6'2"/205/23yrs/67 burpees
99 Burpees....so close to three digits. May try again later in the week.
Good workout and burns the throat.
I've only done 50 burpees before and it took me 1:57! I pumped to push the limit and try for 130!

The app we used was 'Timers Pro'. The 'S' is important.

guys they are using the workout hero wod app
well that was fun ... not. almost coughed up a lung.
You can look at this wod as boring, like a lot of people have complained, or you can look at it as elegant. Your choice. But, if you think it's a joke, you're only kidding yourself.

i feel like someone hit me in the chest with sledge hammer, still can't breathe
79
2 hours later and I'm still having trouble breathing. I'm coughing like a chain smoker. Yuck!
Love this workout--if by love you mean hate. Hate to love, love to hate, yay burpees!
I'm on day 85 of the burpee challenge - could not be happier !!!!!!!!!!! Hope I can get 85 but not feeling confident.....
You girls are f'n awesome! And ya anybody whining about the WOD being 'disappointing' doesn't sound like a Crossfitter.
Be happy we have the ability to participate in this...some people are confined to wheelschairs....do your damn burpees and have fun!
insane work output on the demo video!!
Awesome wod! Get some!!
26/175/6'1 147 burpees
Which athletes, if any, get a buy through the Open and Regionals to the Finals (haven't found the answer in the rules)?
Seems noone does this year - everyone must compete even R.F Jnr
Re #40 "Question can you add some weight on top of the ring to stop the swing. Not much about a few pounds."
I can't see why you couldn't tie a heavy dumbbell or plate to it! Or indeed tie ropes to stabilize it. The requirement is to jump and touch a target 6" above your reach with both hands -- as the video shows it can be a fixed pull-up bar or wall. The main reason rings are a good option is the adjustability in height. A wall isn't a great option of course as you will need to jump slightly higher as you'll have to "angle in" a bit to touch the target.
lol, id like to see the number and video of the complainers.
Cause i know this is gona blow my ship up.
Did a 50 burpee 10 squat, 40 burpee, 20 squat, 30 burpee 30 squat, 20 burpee, 40 squat, 10 burpee, 50 squat today in 19m 45s
Will Try this WOD tomorrow... Can't wait
Ipad app is called "Timers Pro"
Go get it!
I'm on Day 80 of the 100-day burpee challenge! FINALLY - it's gonna pay off! I should tear this UP!

85 on a dry run, busted a nut for the first 25... not a good idea. Definitely a WOD where you need to find a pace and stick with it.
I have to say I was EXTREMELY disappointed when I saw the WOD but was put in my place when I finished. I think all the disappointment comes from watching regionals and the games for the past 7 months and seeing all the fun, exciting movements that the top athletes got to do.
@ Tom #25
Since when is a "normal" person over 6'5"? I don't know a single person over 6'3", so is every person I know abnormal? Just didn't understand your train of thought. What WODs are you looking forward to that favor the "normal" competitor?

Im coughing so hard I sound like Marge Simpsons sister. Took a quick breather too soon into it. Girls in the video are wicked!
I can't believe folks are actually complaining about this WOD. In a world of Smith racks and Hammer machines, treadmills and mirrors, CrossFit answers back by simply saying, "Drop and give me seven minutes worth of burpees... 3, 2, 1, go."
I know there are sexier workouts that could be done, but to me this captures the essence of the games. Think you're the fittest person on the planet? Then jump in and prove it, because this is a workout that ANYONE with a floor and a wall can do.
The Games might end in a stadium under the lights, but to me this is going back to the "garage gym" roots of CrossFit. Nicely done.
Bring it.
Burpees suck, crossfit is a series of sucky workouts to remind you there's lots of things that
1) Suck
2) you're not very good at.
let the whiners whine, just keep them out of my box, cause here.. we do burpees.
simplicity and totally brutal. CFHQ, good work.
NICE!!
It's a great competition wod because it will boil down to single reps dividing the ranks....every rep counts and how bad do you want it?....legit wod!!!
@ Chad #69 -- I thought it would be obvious that my suggestion that 6'5" is normal was in made in jest. I was just moaning at the difficulty of burpees for a big guy but also acknowledging that these things will work out over the course of the Open, perhaps with rowing or something. . .
Kris and Rebecca are both truly inspiring in this video. I'm dumbfounded by their intensity and commitment to the drill. You go ladies! Kick ass in the games!
Yuri
@Tom #80 - Yeah I was waiting for someone to pick up on the staggering lack of irony-recognition demonstrated by Rob and Chad! Wowzers!
If it's any consolation I'm 5'11" and hate burpees too :)
Thought there might be some better numbers posted up on the main board. I've seen CFers doing 100/5mins...
@9, 11, and everyone else who is disappointed. Talk is cheap. Something tells me this is the last anyone will hear from you about this wod. Smart money says you'll be struggling to break into the middle of the pack. 3..2..1..GO!!
Uggghhh, burpees! I may be too embarrassed to post my number. I'll hit this WOD later.
Uggghhh, burpees.
Pretty new to Crossfit. I try not to die ;)
Anybody know what's that on the radio?
7 min of burpees?? Really? I jacked a patrol up ONCE during 2nd phase and had to an extra 1000 in a 24 hr period... Try that on for size.
Is there a scaled/alternate workout that I can do? I don't have a floor..... I was gonna take today off but 7 minutes, why not?
84
I am new to CF and never really performed burpees. 20 in a row at the most.

Starting to add crossfit to my workouts....today's the first WOD. woohoo! 28/F/116/5'1"
Why wasnt this posted earlier?!? The WOD is usually up in time for me to get it by 9-10pm which is when I work out (midshifter). Oh well save it for later. Made my own up today.
6RFT. 800m row, 10 thrusters 115/95, 15 burpee, 15 box jump 24in. 46 min.

Ive only been doing this for 2 weeks but I love the challenge and the pain. Keep em coming!
85. I wussed out, 100 is the goal for next time.
EWW this is going to put you in the HURT LOCKER!!. GREAT challenge to keep a solid pace, not very sexy in movements but sho nuff gonna hurt!

Anyone who workout something else after this one!?

71! i HATE burpees!
97 rx'd, 'Games Standard' burpees.
Used the tape against the wall, wall facing method from demo vid. The wall gets in the way (nearly headbutted it a few times) but having the target in front helps with accuracy. Find a pace and stick with it!
For all of you out there that don't think this is a good choice of WOD, may I suggest the following alternative...
3 rounds NFT (Not For Time):
8 DB curls
Post lbs and number of poses hit in the mirror betweens sets. (Don't forget to roll up those sleeves boys)

We have a LONG way to go down and a long way to go back up. Not complaining though, burpees suck no matter how you look at it haha.
Aiming for 120!!
100. And a burst lung to go with it.
Yay burpees. 80 as rx'd. When done, body realized it had been through 7 minutes of the finest torture it could go through and crashed for about 4 minutes before I could move. Loved it.
Someting tells me that hitting that 6" target instead of just getting your feet of the ground is going to turn the "Suck" up to 11.

I've never been a burpee fan, but this wasn't as bad as I thought. My goal was 50, so I'm pretty happy with my score.
A minor point when measuring the ring height for 6"--would it be better to have the athlete reach with both hands, which eliminates the possibility that the shoulders are tilted? There would still be the possibility of shrugging down the scapulae, but at least the shoulders will be level (assuming both arms are of equal length). I think standing with a hollow or neutral body position with shoulders down and even are OK.

I was disappointed with the fact that every single WOD was an AMRAP last year as that type of workout tends to be heavily weighted to the endurance side of the spectrum. My suspicion is that because they bungled the scoring system and the website last year, they were stuck and had no choice but to do AMRAPs.
They had a year to fix it and they open 2012 with...drumroll...an AMRAP.
Don't get me wrong, it's crossfit and a good WOD, but I am just not looking forward to another open where the top end of your strength NEVER comes into play.

If they want to level the playing field for the tall people, who naturally have a slower cycle time on burpees, then next weeks WOD should be a 7 minute AMRAP of Wall Balls.
An elegant solution, thank you.

@ #35
There are no free trips - everyone who wants to compete at the Games must compete in the Open, qualify for Regionals and then compete at Regionals and qualify for Cali.
The only rule is as you mentioned, if one of the podium finishers at Regionals is a past champ then the 4th place person gets the go ahead as well.

90 reps (but with ceiling only 1 inch above my reach).
Think that is a good start ;)

Burpees are so easy, I don't know what people are complaining about. Just lay down and get up and jump. Stop being so lazy. It only takes a second. Geez.

I'm looking for advise. Squats seem to be my real achilles heel. My dead is around 500, bench 330, but I CANT get above 315 on squat. When i squat heavy my hips seem to shift to one side soon as i hit parallel. I can correct it on the way up, but it is always a struggle. Anyone else have this problem. It is something that really p.sses me off since it is the one thing that stops me from progressing. Any Advice?

63 as RX a little dissapointed in that ! I do this solo in my local gym so I am my own competition - Watching the demo with the girls bustin out over 100 is inspiring- I have been doing CF for about 14 months now. It has revitalized my passion for working out. Had my 10 year anniversary checkup for my ACL reconstruction yesterday. All of my tested parameters substantially exceeded my pre-operatve non-involved knee tests - I am getting stronger and more fit at 54 than I was at 44 in most ways- thanks CF

A good sub for burpies is BURPIES!
did 69 today. Not happy, taking tomorrow off and going to knock it out Saturday!
I have to agree with the so called "whiners" of the board. 7 mins. of burpees. Come on, and just because you voice your displeasure with the workout, doesn't mean you have to post a top score.
Obviously the workout is hard, hell 7 mins. of anything is hard. Try running in place for 7 mins, or doing jumping jacks, or air squats, etc, etc,. I just think it is a pretty big let down with all the hype leading up to this year. They have the world watching and they pull 7 mins of burpees, BOO...pretty lame. Last year WOD 1 was the easiest too, but at least it was a WOD not just 7 mins. of one exercise.
101 Burpees in 7:00 Minutes

To the person looking for a sub - try sprawls. It's essentially a burpee without the pushup. Helpful for people with shoulder problems or who can't do pushups.
And yeah, Tom's sarcasm about normal height didn't come through well, but he and the others who responded are totally right. Us tall guys have to go a lot farther and do a lot more work per rep. It just takes longer. Not that it will matter in the long run, since in CF you have to be "pretty good" at everything and the elite will pull ahead no matter what over the course of the Open.
I always say, except for rowing and wall-balls, Crossfit is mostly just an elaborate scheme to make tall people look bad. :p

Fairly new to Crossfit in my 3rd month of doing the wods consistantly every week.
The Open Games concept is really cool...but Im not sure I fully understand it.
So you enter, pay 20 bucks and sumbit your film doing burpees. That places you in a rank world wide.
If you have the most burpees in your class and reigon do you go on to the next level of competetion "Regionals" or are there more wods to film during the "Open"? Not sure how this all works.
In other words...I have no chance of performing at the high level that most of you tremendous athletes perform. My rank would be very low. Is it worth my 20 bucks to enter or should I do the wod at my gym, post my score online and sit back and watch the results without entering?
Is the competition just for the high end athlete?
Thanks...

Did Angie this morning, not going to attempt this; I think I will do it tomorrow for PT with my platoon. A little confused about something, I thought a burpbee was a push-up/jump combination. I see people doing them but going to their knees before coming up into the jump?

As Rx'd, sans quality control...did this in the living room.
74. Started too fast and ran out of gas in last couple of minutes. 7 minutes is a long time.
6 weeks in on crossfit workouts .... 87 reps. Lungs ready to collapse and feet hurting but it's all about pushing through
65... chili and crossfit does not mix!

78. I need to learn the balance between going hard and pacing. Great work out!

I am new to Crossfit and I love it. It is ad addiction. This was great for 1.5 minutes, then it sucked balls--in a good way.

87, big difference going to a target, I've done 50 in 2:37, maybe just a bad day.
M/29/6'3"/190
67, All completed with jumps over a 12" and chest to deck. Tried to find a consistent pace to finish with over 100. Need to speed it up next time.

Did 100 burpees for time just 2 days ago, got 6:00 (PR). I guess my form on those wasn't nearly as strict as the 6" reach standard.
122 - near death experience afterwards lol. wasn't expecting this as the first wod...
Really need to get back to consistency with wods. 73 burpees are not my best for sure.
1 mile run, then
65 burpees in 7 min (the WOD), then
1 mile run, then
Bench press work: 135 x 10 rep; 155 x 10 rep; 175 x 5 rep; 175 x 5 rep; 175 x 5 rep + 1 rep.
After strength work, did RX'd 81. The simplicity was a warning to its difficulty.

Second cf workout, to be honest the warm up still hard! I can already see how this is going to be a benefit to my sport

I knew this was going to be harder than it looks on paper, but it sure did a number on me.
67 in 7:00. Probably shouldn't have done this right after the CFE WOD for yesterday. Maybe I'll try it again tomorrow ...maybe.

If someone misses the burpee target but then goes back to redo the jump after they already did another burpee bc they forgot you can just re do the jump, do u think that should count?

LOL, 103. I could have pushed a little sooner in the 4,5,6 minutes and squeezed out 10 more. Very pain full. Goal was 105 little short.

definitely happy with that performance
I like how most of the Opens WODS last year and the first one for this year are aimed at (as quoted from someone from last year) "bouncy little fu*^ers". If you look at the top people most of the womena re aroun 5'2" and the men under 5'8".... can we get something moderately heavy now to even theis out a bit???? F/25/5'8"/140 *108

An interesting analysis of WOD #1 ranking when taking into account tall people vs short people. The basic assumption that I'm making is that tall people work more than short people for the same number of burpees performed. They should therefore be rewarded more in terms of ranking.

My 5 year old daughter did 105 in 7 min. Real chest to floor with a high reaching jump burpees. She's awesome.
