Everything I have in my body for you brother! Semper Fi !
Hell of a WOD for one Hell of a Marine. RIP Brother we will continue to hold the line.
Rip bro!!! We got the watch!!
From the Marines at 2D MARDIV, rest in peace brother!
Very inspiring demo video
Rest in Peace Joshua, thank you.
From a former 1st BN, 1st MAR Marine, RIP Brother. I'll sweat it out for you.
RIP Devil Dog ill do it while you watch from up there
Wow an amazingly brutal looking wod for another HERO making the ultimate scarifice....RIP
Rest easy brother...Semper Fi
Sigh. Another new Hero. Another knot in the stomach, that empty feeling that comes each time I open up the WOD and see a new "Hero". We spoke of this earlier this month. These workouts are our opportunity to remember and thank those who have lost their lives in the service of their country. It's an opportunity for us to remember those left behind, the family members who keep the home fires burning. Do think of them. Do find them and thank them. Ask them what they need if you are in a position to help; they will understand.
"Desforges". 5 rounds for time, a task specific WOD. This, like most "Hero" WOD's is a long one. Once you are more experienced these are the ones we slog through, almost no matter how long they take. For the Newbies for whom these posts are offered we will take a slightly different tact.
225# Deadlift, 12 Reps. The deadlift is not new to you now. Traditional grip like Keith in the video, or sumo, it's up to you. If you are new this is either a) too heavy or b) too many reps or c) both. Let's make a call right now about what we will accomplish in this WOD. Aiming for primarily endurance today? Fine. Scale the weight. Pick a load that you can lift without breaking up the set in at least rounds 1 and 2, and then only once or twice in the rest of the rounds. Thinking strength stimulus? Also fine. Do 225 or some number that feels really heavy, do it with perfect form, and drop the reps to 6/round.
20 PU. Yup...more PU. You're a PU expert now, at least an expert at your particular type of PU. 5 rounds of 20 = 100 total. After yesterday, especially if you subbed Towel PU, that's just WOW, huh? If you are feeling even the littlest bit post-PU cut 'em in half; 10/round.
135# Clean & Jerk. Going by strictest definitions this would be a full squat clean followed by a jerk. Keith does power cleans in the video. My bid is do whatever you wish, but 48 heavy C&J makes it totally cool to do Power cleans. Same basic decision as the deadlift: endurance goal? Scale the weight to one in which you can move through rounds 1 and 2 unbroken, then survive. Strength today? Do is As Rx'd or so heavy that you struggle with each one (perfect form, of course) and scale the reps to 6/round.
20 Knees to Elbows (KTE). Hang from the bar and raise your bent legs such that they come in contact with your elbows. Kip to your heart's content. Scaling the movement would be raising your knees to parallel. Just like the PU give some thought to doing 10/round.
A good rule of thumb on ALL long WOD's when you are a Newbie is to put a 40:00 cap on the workout. No matter where you are stop at 40;00. If you are new you will not have a sufficient CrossFit base to soldier on, although you will see many experienced folks here do whatever it takes to finish. Be safe and be reasonable, even though tomorrow is a Rest Day.
FWIW, I watched the video and was really moved by everything Keith did and said. In a perfect world I will have an opportunity to shake your hand, young man, and thank you for not only that video and those words, but also for serving your country. Meeting men and women like you, Keith, has been one of the unexpected pleasures of being a CrossFitter.
"Desforges", a new CrossFit Hero WOD. With humble thanks and a heavy heart 3-2-1...Go.
I new this Marine...i spent quality time with him as a Young Marine ... My heart is heavy.. I will always cherish my memories together in Denmark...Semper Fi!!
I love and miss you Josh, you'll never be forgotten.
Semper Fi Marine. You will never be forgotten. 1/6 HARD.
R.I.P. Sgt, its our fight now. Semper fi.
I served with Sgt Desforges on his last tour... He was a good Marine and helluva guy. Thanks for honoring his memory. I am just saddened by the fact that I know more than one hero honored with a WOD. Semper Fidelis brother... you are remembered.
RIP man of honor. Your family and country are blessed because of you. Thank you
R.I.P Brother, Cant thank you enough for your sacrifice. This country wouldnt be the great country it is today with out people like yourself past, present, future. Please look out over everyone down here doing the lord's work.
Hey Josh I'll be ripping apart this WOD later on today bro. Miss you brother, even if you weren't in Team 2 hahaha

Desforges was my third CrossFit WOD. Still way sore from yesterday's session but fired up, I was eager to get into the gym.
Halfway through I thought, "I can't do this---even with the scaled pull-ups and knees to elbows." Then the whole pride thing kicked in and, as an ex-military guy who's also from Massachusetts originally, I figured I could at least honor the namesake hero by gutting out the remainder of the work.
So... for all those who fight the good fight and put themselves in harm's way---thanks for the inspiration.
Rest in peace, Marine. I'll be doing this one on Monday for you. Semper Fidelis
RIP Josh miss you more and more each day. I can't wait to do this tomorrow and have my ass kicked in your honor. Thank you Crossfit HQ and Arlene Desforges (Joshs Mom) fir all your help and for creating a WOD in his honor. SEMPER FI xoxoxo

What an incredible workout. Not to take away from SGT Deforges, but this day also marks the 5th anniversary of 2 heroes and personal friends who gave their lives defending fellow Soldiers in Najaf, Iraq. CW3 Cornell Chao and CPT Mark Resh, you will never be forgotten! Please offer a prayer to the families of all three of these heroes and may your pain and sweat in this WOD be a reminder of those in harms way fighting for the freedoms that many take for granted.

I new Josh growing up in Ludlow, we rode the same bus to school each day. I heard he became a Marine when I was in college and I thought it was a fitting career for a firecracker of a dude. It's awful he is gone, but I'm glad his name is being immortalized in the minds of Crossfitters around the world. Thanks to the Desforges family for making sure we never forget those who've sacrificed it all.

Are the C&J squat cleans, or straight cleans as in Grace? Either way, can't wait to hit this one in honor of a remarkable man.
Protect your hands, had a lot rips at the gym with this one. Go hard for Desforges.

rough work out. I loved it. Every swipe of the marker off of the white board was a mini accomplishment.
Forearms started to really scream on the last two sets. I started making the C&J more of one fluid movement using the power clean and using the dip from the catch to drive the press, as opposed to standing erect and executing another dip.
This led to my post workout epiphany : If necessity is the mother of invention, then fatigue is the mother of efficiency.

Very humbling WOD today. I haven't failed to complete a WOD (Rx'ed, scaled or subbed) for quite some time, probably a year at least. Today I tried but time constraints, sleep deprivation and loss of hand grip put me in my place.

Tore off a callus on my left hand in the 4th round and all I could think of was the fact it's a HERO WOD and if you can't sack up and deal with it, you don't deserve to even have the privilege of doing a workout named after a young man like Sgt. Desforges.

I am originally from Ludlow, where Josh was from. It is a small town in Western Mass. His parents are good people and Josh was a great kid. All he ever wanted to do was be a Marine. His death left a big hole in a small town. I think about Lincoln's letter to Mrs. Bixby, whenever I think of Josh . . .
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Deforges was in an armory stocking weapons when we robbed him into the sniper platoon. His personality, and haircut were larger than life, and a constant point of contention between him and our 1st Sgt (provided entertainment for all on lookers as Josh got screamed at and calmly returned witty remarks). Josh gave his life just days after Bull. Neither hero was truly a religious crossfitter, but the pain and mental test which you undergo to complete these wods is minute compared to the pain they endured and sacrifice they made for no other reason than the Marines which they led. Thanks for honoring their memory.

I knew Josh personally,... he was a hell of a person and became a friend while a member of my gym back when he was still in highschool. I'm a certified Crossfit trainer and while looking for a WOD to have a client perform, I was floored to see Josh on Crossfit.com, and a workout in his name! Desforges WOD will no doubt be a recurring workout for me, and all of my clients!

I prayed that I would be able to at least get through it as required, with a broken hallejulah and a shattered praise for another hero.

As rx'd. Fun workout. Slow and steady!
Finally did this one today.
Scaled weights to 185# DL and 95# CJ. Got it in 26:11.
After reading the times, I feel like I should have gone a little heavier. Should have done the DL's Rx'd, I was able to practically straight set the 185.
135# CJ would have slowed me down big time. They took me the longest by far...I feel like with them being 115# and the DL being 185#, my time would have been about 33 mins.
Still a beast workout. Had to do it in honor of a fallen brother. Semper Fi, Sergeant..I'll do my best to make sure the Marines you left behind are in humble hands.

As Rx: My timer shut off...low battery.. stupid ipod...
I'm not sure if I did 5 or 4 rounds to be honest.. I think I did 5 but possibly 4... kind of got lost in this WOD.
This was KILLER... really messed up my lower back doing the jerks... I was just popping them up too fast and was not concentrating on being tight in the overhead position and again when lowering the weights back down. The DL felt o.k...
I VERY RARELY pop my hands and I did at the end on this one. My left hand just split below the callouses.. it was red and wet and hurting.. not too much at first, but at the end I was feeling it. Swimming with the kids after this was tough.. and I did NOT do enough post WOD flexibility.
This is a KILLER on the hands.. and GRIP.
For me 225 lbs is something.. not crazy and well in my wheelhouse for multiple reps, but to jump onto 20 pullups right after hurt the hands a bit. Really a lot of my time was on the C & J. I did them in 2s and 3s.. i started doing jerks, but toward the end of each round I would do split jerks for more efficiency. I was afraid that my shoulders would start to go in the later rounds.
This was a very challenging WOD.. I went in thinking it would be a grinder and it was. I almost alway super attack a WOD and I did, but with controlled pace. I kept telling myself to slow down a little and keep within myself.
I am always doing the WODs as RX, but maybe should have sclaled back a little bit... do it one time a little under Rx maybe and go from there..
