Call me a Boot, but is this the "Filthy Fifty"?
Push press 45lbs - does that mean just the 45lbs bar or with 45s on each side ?
Yeah CFNE! Way to crush it!
CFNE awesome job! Maya rocks!!!
LOL! Awesome Russell! Kids are a lot bigger since the last time I saw them! Hope CO is treating you right!
This was hilarious to see! Yea Russell and crew.
Wow! A January for the ages. Multiple "Girls", a "Hero", and now all of you Newbies get the "Filthy Fifty". Good stuff. Lots of info; let's get to it.
The Filthy Fifty is a "chipper", a WOD with a sequence of exercises to be completed in order, finishing one before starting the next. Why "chipper"? Well, I've heard it's because you "chip away" at the exercises, or that it's like begin put through a "wood chipper", but no one knows for sure. There are 10 exercises here and we do 50 reps of each. To do this "As Rx'd" is to complete all 50 reps of each exercise before moving on to the next one. There is no "women's weight" per se, only As Rx'd (I'll make suggestions below.
Box Jumps 24". From a standing start jump onto a box or other secure surface 24" high. A completed jump is when you have your hips fully extended and your feet are at least on, or level, with the 24" surface.
Jumping Pull-ups. Stand under a PU bar that is just at the height of your arms extended; grasp the bar while jumping up, pulling and jumping to get your chin over the bar. Let yourself fall freely from the top of the PU. Do not resist. Do not slow your descent. Consider pushing yourself down.
Kettlebell Swings. Same as "Nate". 1 Pood. 16 Kgs. ~35 lbs. Newbie women consider 12 Kg. Sumo stance. Pick up KB or DB. With a small flex of your legs and hips rapidly open your hips and extend your legs, guiding the KB upward with your straight arms. A completed KBS is KB overhead with some part of your ear visible in front of your elbow.
Walking lunge. Each step = one rep. Trailing knee "gently kisses" the ground.
Knees to Elbows. Grasp bar with feet above ground. Bring your knees up so that they come into contact with your elbows. Feel free to kip.
Push Press 45# (empty Oly bar). From the front rack position, a slight bend of the knee and flex of the hip followed by a rapid straightening of the knee and opening or extension of the hip driving the bar overhead, some part of your ear visible in front of your elbow. Dip/Drive. Scale to 35# woman's bar of lighter.
Back extensions. As Rx'd is on a GHD (Look it up). You can use a Roman Chair, exercise ball, or sub Supermans.
Wall Ball 20#. Scale to 14# or lower. Using a med ball, do a squat and at the top of the squat throw the med ball to a target 10' up a wall. Each rep includes a full squat, crease of hip below the knee.
Burpees. Spawn of the devil. CrossFit Burpees are not your Uncle Marine's Burpees. From a standing start drop to the ground with your chest and thighs in contact with the deck. Get up. jump (you must be higher than a CO2 molecule off the ground) and clap your hands above your head.
Double-Unders. Each rep is two passes of your jump rope under your feet. Unsuccessful attempts do not count.
There you have it, your first chipper, the "Filthy Fifty". Record your time and any subs or scales you use so that you can compare next time. We do this beauty a few times each year.
3-2-1...Go.
Nice time by the fastest guy but he could of made up some time if he wasn't pulling with his arms on the k2es, then again he wouldve lost that time if he opened his hips on the box jumps.

Greg Amundson's video is a must watch!
Great performances at CFNE, didn't expect anything else.
Bergeron, great explanations. It was like watching the musings of Bingo on film, cool.
While testing to see if I could use our MRAP as my "wall" (I'm in Afghanistan), I totally smashed my middle and ring finger between the med ball and the rear doorstop. I almost completely dislodged the nail of my middle finger and got a nice little cut on my ring finger. But after our Doc fixed me up, I got right back out there and established a new PR. As I was making my way through the WOD, my fingers definitely hurt. But I found myself surprisingly able to ignore the pain. Then I had an epiphany... I believe there's something about doing these usually painful, albeit enjoyable, WODs day after day that develops your pain tolerance far beyond what it would be were you just doing a more "normal" workout regimen. I think that's yet another testament to CrossFit as how it's beneficial in a whole spectrum of ways for your everyday life.
I just found that all pretty interesting.

I was pretty sore from yesterday's muscle-ups and swings. Wasn't sure about tackling this today, but felt really good once I got warmed up. If you're in the same boat... go get it!!!
I just wanted to comment on Greg A.'s video of the burpee pullup.... I love/ hate this movement.. it's great.. the more you explode up the less wear and tear on your back.. use that sequence.. like using your legs in a PP or a PJ or the sequence with a SDHP...
THAT.. I already knew.. I NEVER knew the REASON for his alternating grip for doing his pullups.. I really really liked the multi function aspect of this alternating grip... for rope climbs, for keeping his head level and "feeling" the bar for the pullups.. etc. Great great stuff. I do them that way occasionally to mix it up.. especially when my overhand grip is going... interesting approach. Good stuff Greg.

Is there a sub for jumping pullups? Gym's pullup bars are too low for anyone over 6ft. Can grasp them standing flat footed with arms not even fully extended. Reduce the number and do strict dead hang PU's?
For time:
35 Box jump, 20 inch box
35 Jumping pull-ups
35 Kettlebell swings, 1 pood

@57, I thought jumping pull-ups where when the bar was about a foot above your reach and you drop between reps but after watching the WOD video, it says bar should be at wrist level when standing. So based on that, the bar that you have would be the right height for jumping PU. Was new to me too.

I just wanted to give a ton of credit to the Panther crossfit group. As I watched their video, that is exactly what my friends and I did during college, throughout grad school and even now over at our local Y. Love the respect and flexibility this box shows...I give you all credit and you have my respect!!
Question about the Greg A. burpee pullup. Excellent teaching on the movement and the reason for mixed grip. My question is...Would it be best to alternate the hands on the grip? Say you were doing 100 Burpee pullup for time. Doing odd reps with left hand facing in and even numbers with right hand facing in?

Big props to Greg A. I was never a fan of the burpee pullup movement before seeing this video. Now I cant wait for the movement to come up in a WOD.

Nice article on roller racing! I ran triathlon for Iowa State University last year and we had a few sets of rollers for training and they are WAY more effective for training indoors than a regular trainer... but I never got the hang of them and fell off a few times and had to put it next to the wall for balance. I would love to go to NY to see some of those events

Very green newbie. Only my 4th CrossFit workout (started last Thursday)
I was extremely HUMBLED today...
Variations...
- only had a 10lb. medicine ball for wall ball, but threw it it ~15'
- only could do 30 knee to elbows (and the last 5 were pretty weak)
- my jump roping needs work so I practiced double unders, but made sure I did at least 150 'single unders' as a sub.
took me 43:46....That is embarrassing/humbling. I really thought I was in decent shape. Long way to go for me.

I dont comment much on here anymore but can someone please explain to me when the standards for an American KBS changed from an actual "swing'" to what might as well be called a "kettlebell snatch"? I really dont care which one is better, just make a decision on which one is to be used when. Too many people are half assing their wods doing the snatch movement. If it calls for a swing then swing the d%&mn thing!

This was the first time I was able to use a REAL 20 lb ball... I normally use an 18 lb smaller harder ball... it's easier to catch but hurts your hands after a while.... I got a Dynamax for Christmas... goodbye goat this year. I'm able to do Karen late nights etc.
Anyhoo, the WOD felt o.k. and I was able to kill the box jumps pretty fast... I have to go all around the gym and up and down a flight and a half of stairs to do this WOD, but it's always a good one... I did my knees to elbows on the rings this time as well... since my pullup bar is wall mounted, it's hard to do high rep knees or toes to bar... I can't really go back and get the recall, so it's like doing lots and lots of singles.. with the rings I can go back and get the recoil and pop back into the next rep.
For me the Wallball and the Burpees ate my time up a bit.. I still have to split my wallballs into 5 sets. I did the burpees in 5 sets as well.. with probably about 8 seconds rest inbetween each set.
3rd WOD in a row of PRs.. not to bad for a soon to be 38 year old.
