U.S. Army First Lieutenant Daren M. Hidalgo, 24, of Waukesha, Wisconsin, assigned to 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany, died on February 20, 2011, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. Two weeks prior to his death, he was hit by an earlier improvised explosive device. Despite his injuries, he stayed in country and on patrols rather than return home. He is survived by his father Jorge, mother Andrea, brothers Miles and Jared, and sister Carmen.

The idea of doing a wod in honor of someone is one of the most motivating and refreshing ways to excel..rip hildago and here's to never giving up
@45 Sugar subs are worse for you!!! Even though you are not taking in simple sugars, which causes insulin spikes, sugar substitutes illicit similar responses from your body. Your pancreas will still secret insulin if you take in any kind of sugar, sugar substitute, etc. Since your body can't tell the difference, your pancreas will still get overworked ergo still straining your metabolic system. Get your sugar fix from natural sources like fruit and honey, and only in moderation. Go read the Paleo Solution.

I knew Daren though college. He played on Army's racquetball team, I played on Penn State's. We would see each other at tournaments. He was always a positive person. Thanks for making this in honor of him, Crossfit.
Jason @ 20 - Watch the WOD demo; or, under "Exercises & Demos" you'll see "Clean & Jerk". Nestled right next to C&J is a "Clean" demo (wmv and mov). The clean she's demonstrating is a squat clean.
Rest in Peace LT Hidalgo; and God bless his friends and family.

subbed with: 75# for cleans, 25# for lunges
I can improve on this time by getting that pose running down - was at least 8 minutes slower on the 2nd two mile run. Also, at 75#, the cleans weren't that heavy - should have pushed through harder - faster sets of 10 rather than slower sets of 5 is entirely do-able.
This is my favorite kind of WOD -
Developing the habit of pushing harder through it is my goal because, sometimes, in the midst of the misery, I think, "Eh! Good Enough."
Maybe I can replace that with "Go Faster, Rest Less".... that's one I like. I could write it on my arm with sharpie.....

A very challenging WOD and tribute to remind us of the sacrifice that others give in the pursuit of the security of our nation.
This WOD was scheduled during a time period when we are gathered with family and friends and extend prayers to those who could not be with us.
Thanks to all those who continue in the service of this nation and to the CrossFit Mothership and all CrossFitters who pay tribute to these heroes.
I am humbled to be part of this community, thanks for having me here.

@45 Sugar subs are worse than regular sugar, not only are you getting similar insulin spikes and metabolism effects, but, like many other artificial or over processed foods, your body does not know how to completely digest, store or use the toxins and other remnants that are left in your system. Your body can flush some of them, but there are many latent effects that are not even fully understood by the medical community. These ingredients can be a big factor in diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer and other serious illnesses/diseases. The paleo diet can be a really good thing, but people should remember that an important part of it is not just eating naturally, like a caveman, but actually eating all natural, even organic, foods.

With all due respect. 1 mile on front/back, no rest. 35:16
Did Hidalgo today for the first time. I got a 39:50 as RX'd, at Crossfit .380 in McKinney, TX.
For time:
Run 2 miles
10 burpees
135 pound Power clean, 20 reps
20 Walking lunge steps with 45lb plate held overhead
135 pound Power clean, 20 reps
10 burpees
Run 2 miles
44:57
Took the 2 minute rest periods while switching from running to weightlifting shoes between the cleans and burpees. No 24'' box, so 10 burpees was a good substitute.
This WOD kicked the crap our of me!! Ran the first two miles at 7:20 pace and had to drop back to about 8:30 pace for the last two, taking two short walk brakes as well (abs cramped up very badly). Thought this was a great effort from me, so I'm happy with me time.

Did this today and loved it. Fast, fun, on a warm California day. Rest in Peace U.S. Army First Lieutenant Daren M. Hidalgo.
Thanks to the Crossfit Community and Crossfit HQ for putting out this workout in memory of my brother, Daren. A great workout for a great man - and a workout that he would have loved and probably crushed! Thanks to Mark and Chris at Crossfit Sacrifice for having this be their grand opening WOD. It was great to do this workout with 200+ athletes in memory of Daren.
Always miss and love you bro, Miles

He finished the 1st run about 10 seconds ahead of me. On the last run he started about a minute ahead of me. I caught him with about 100m left when he stopped to walk cause his calf was cramping. We finished together at 48.18. If he hadn't walked I'd guess he would have finished at around 48.00.
Great way to celebrate your life, Daren. One year ago we lost you, and your friends and family remember you every day.
