Coach Glassman is dead on. Crossfit (and it's business model) should be focused on nothing other than the pursuit of excellence. You can't sell excellence. You have to embody excellence so that other people, ALREADY SEARCHING for a path to excellence, will want to pay you to help them find some of it.

Sorry, not a fan of Islam, or Kulsoon's problems. This is America. Islam destroys souls, people, and eventually nations. Sure, there all innocent and non extremist when they first invade a nation. Then they breed their hate into their offspring, and before you know it, its there way, or your head on a platter! The unholy Koran is very clear on what all Muslims must do.

Snatch grip deadlifts. Done at home with metal plates over wooden floor, no drop offs allowed. Could have risked a little more with bumper plates in the weight room. Only round one unbroken, round 2 to 5 broken after 3 or 4 power snatches.

They're coming. Can you hear them? The WSJ published its first New Year's Resolution article of the year today and they will be coming soon.

CrossFit Newbies arrive 1/1/12.

As I've done in January for several years I will attempt to "Pre-answer" the typical questions that we all know are coming. Let's all remember that we, too, were once newcomers to this wonderful place, a place where the founder disavows any and all marketing and exhorts us all simply to chase excellence. When they arrive please treat all of the Newbies with patience and kindness here, on Facebook, and wherever you meet them.

Thanks!

agree, most wars are due to religious differences or tribalism. christian or islamic. however, the christian book(bible) says denounce non-christians, and try to convert them--don't remember it saying they should kill non-christians. the koran says, first try to convert 'infidels', and if they won't, then kill them, or at least try, and you are PROMISED a place in heaven in doing so. pretty big difference in ideology there. in one, god condemns the 'infidel', in the other, man is to 'play' god and kill the infidel. which fits the moral conscience more?

With some workouts you don't think about the time. You just lose yourself in the moment, especially if it's something new and exciting.

I've never done hangs with 135. I had to hang these pretty low, and they came in sets of 2, but this was legit WOD, one of those where you just come out a different person.

Forget the political history of Islam. It's religion/faith is oppressive. it does not promote free will. nor capitalism

On another note what advancements has Islam or an islamic country made to civilization in last 200 years? Technology, medicine, philosophy? Not much. Isn't that the measurement of a person....

Holy smokes when I finished rd 2 and I was at 5 min my mind blew at the capabilities of khalipa and the others. I mean even if I wasn't out of breath (which I was plenty) I was losing snatch power like a leaky hose. Dl were np and ohs were easyish but damn those snatches! It's funny I front squatted 5 lbs more than khalipa and it means nothing today. I am happy however it was my first time hang power snatching 135 Up until today I could only squat snatch it. I still suck.

Islam - the world's most intolerant religion. The sad thing is she has no choice because the fear of apostasy is what fundamentalists rally around and that is why there is such harsh penalties for apostates in Islamic countries. The fear of apostasy is their center of gravity, it draws recuits, money and a united will.

Islam - a religion of peace - what a joke.

Kulsoom stated that CARE came to her aid, which she accepted, and that they helped her to compete and express her religion, but what many folks don’t know is that the “Council on American-Islamic Relations” (CARE) is a terrorist supporting front organization that is partially funded by terrorists, founded by terrorists, and that CAIR wishes nothing more than the implementation of Sharia Law in America.

I am surprised that CrossFit Inc., who once sold the infamous Infidel T-shirts, is now supporting an athlete that is expressing the same Islamic religion that has fueled the very hate in her fellow Muslim brothers that has killed our heroes in the hero’s workouts we all perform.

Learn the truth about CARE here:

Looking forward to this one.

A quick retort to the Islam discussion above. Vast majority of people confuse Cultural Islam with the actual Religion. There is a big difference. There are 100s of different cultural Islam (some countries require headdress others do not for example). I was actually appalled the other day watching American Muslim to see a woman on the show state that she is not allowed to shake a man's hand! That is preposterous and totally untrue. It is an example of how a male dominated society can bastardize what should be a beautiful religion. Next time you see or read something bad about Islam..ask yourself if this is likely something the Koran discusses or from some wayward society's interpretation.

The level of negativity directed towards Islam on here is concerning. Almost 1/4 of the world practices it in some form. If we conclude that it is an inherently negative religion, what is the solution for this population?

Moreover, consider the response here. Someone wants to participate peacefully in our community. She took efforts to do so in a manner that didn't disrupt the intent of the rules of the event, while still allowing her to adhere to her belief system. The response here has been largely close minded and aggressive. What signal does that send to other Muslims regarding peaceful integration?

The United States was founded on the tenet of the right to peacefully practice any religion provided it doesn't infringe on the rights of others. It saddens me to think that we have lost sight of this.

@57
I thought the "Infidel"-tshirt was to point out to all "non believers" watching me(or preferably Mr Khalipa) doing WODs that they should skip the bicepcurling and posing between sets and join the movement. I to was an Infidel once, then I saw the light (Josh Everett) and Crossfit ever since.

Please lets focus on Crossfit and truly learn one thing from history: Religious quarrels seldom lead to anything positive, and most certainly wont make any of us better athletes.

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.”

WTF!!! Rules are rules! that's it. There should be any special concideration because of religious dress, or preference. If you can't wear the prescribed uniform, then you can't compete! period, end of story.

reminds me of a story recently where a female muslim tried to sue an army ROTC organization because they wouldn't let her wear her head dress thingy in uniform... SHE JOINED THEM!!! she wasn't drafted or anything, people are to afraid to tell muslims NO!! if they don't like the rules, then go back to the "stans" !

To comment 86/Greg:

"If you don't like the rules, go back to the 'stans.' - Seriously?

Isn't that why ALL of our forebearers came here in the first place (unless you happen to be Native American) - freedom of religion, freedom of expression, the right to petition...

Yup. It's a bytch when the ideals stated in Declaration of Independence/Bill of Rights interferes with petty prejudice and ignorance masquerading as patriotism.

The United States of America is not just a place, Baby, it's a state of mind. I welcome you to visit.

@ 7 Gar
Christianity vs Islam

Take a look over the years Christianity In the 20th century alone, have been responsible for more deaths than any other civilization. In this most brutal of centuries, Christians created more civilian casualties than have Muslims in the whole of Islamic history. The slaughter of 900,000 Rwandans in 1994 in a population that was over 90 % Christian; or the genocide of over 300,000 Muslims and the systematic rape of over 100,000 Muslim women by Christian Serbs in Bosnia between 1992 and 1995. The horrible truth is that, numerically and statistically speaking, Christian Civilization is the bloodiest and most violent in history, and is responsible for hundreds of millions of deaths.

Way to go Kulsoom!

Lots of people with really narrow minds in here, spewing venom. Not so many speaking up against them. Kinda depressing.

Comment #125 - Posted by: sven at December 28, 2011 10:13 PM

@Jeff, Hitler considered himself a Christian as well (He was Roman Catholic). Roman Catholicism is NOT true Christianity. Just ask any Roman catholic if they are Christian, they will reply, "I'm Catholic." Roman Catholicism misses the mark big time. Its a works based religion. True Christianity is a blood based religion, the blood of Christ.

@SVEN, Those who initially apposed Hitler were considered narrow minded as well. I am not apposed to Kulsoon personally, just her politically based religion, and her need to cram it down every one's throat by insisting the rules be changed to accommodate her narrow minded religious views.

@Luke, The USA was not founded on the right to practice ANY religion, only the Christian religion. But America is no longer a Christian nation, though there are many good Christian people still living peaceably in it. America is far more pagan, then Christian. Our founding fathers would weep bitterly if they could see what has become of America.

This is not a whole bunch of research. These events happened in just the last 15 to 20 years. Are you suggesting that these events in Bosnia, Rwanda etc did not take place? My Father, Brother and Uncle witnessed the mutilation and killing by Christians on Christians during there tours of duty.

I am seriously disappointed to see so many so called CrossFit Athletes taking such a ignorant and evil position against another fellow CrossFitter. Anyone thing that you guys have mentioned about Islam is so far from the truth that it is disrespectful. I am an American Convert and I'm gotta tell you this so that you so called athletes don't keep putting your foot in your mouth making yourself look like assholes. You better read your Christian Crusade history that promoted killing none Christians and there weren't any bargaining going on. Islam is a religion based on evidence for it's legislations and the average muslim don't understand the Qur'an without checking with Qualified Scholars to explain it to them. Those qualified scholars go to college to do this just as the christian bible thumpers do to interpret the bible. So, point is, don't dare associate dumb ass wars with religion. Just as I ,as a black american don't associate poor minded as white folks with the Christian religion, which I should since the religion promotes irresponsibility. What faith will tell you that you aren't responsible for your sins and actions if you believe that Christ died for your sins ahead of time. This is a coward concept and promotes nothing but reckless behavior and hatred just as your so called forefathers used to enslaved Africans, deceive native Americans and continuously corrupting the minds of the world. Now you are pissed because you have a people who try to fear their Lord upon evidence. Not the ones who misunderstand and try to follow their own dumb interpretation like the fools in Waco, TX did. No one is calling them terrorist. Or the evil slave masters during the slavery movement. No one called them terrorist. Well, I am calling them terrorist and will call anyone a terrorist who hide behind religion, politics, government, patriotism or even the name CrossFit, pretending to be like minded but you are a coward hiding in disguise. Education has always be the cure, so educate yourselves about what you are taught to hate before associating a beautiful thing like Islam, Christianity, or CrossFit with politics. They are not one and the same! NEVER...

Hang pwr snatches pretty bad. Really tough trying to maintain grip when bringing down from overhead. Lift was easier when I remembered to float arms.
Good job sitting back in chair on OHS. Remember to use narrower stance next time. Started where I caught it in snatch which is too wide.

I am a red blooded American, former Army Medic (Conserve the Fighting Strength!), avid turkey, deer hunter, and anything else that moves and we can eat! I train fighter using many crossfit techniques. I have been a crossfit'er long before the bench press was a part of the program. Dare I say I am also a practicing Muslim and have been for the past 20 years. I have hid this fact on this board because of some of these comments and fear of being treated less than what I am a practicing crossfit’er. I get it fear is paralyzing and makes people hate. I have lived in a small Kansas town my whole life minus 10-12 years for service and college. There is a nearby Missouri town that when I was growing was openly and very racist (I know, oh no here we go the angry black man). We lived with threats from the locals "if you keep that up my uncle is in the Klan blah, blah, blah….” we were terrified. The point in this long drawn out message is that I have never been taught to hate Christians, Jews, Americans, or anyone else, nor do I teach my children to hate. I could have easily grown up hating all whites because of being called the “N’’ word, little monkey, or all the other colorful names you can think of (LOL!) But I didn’t and again I don’t teach my children to hate or even judge groups of people based on history. I raise my children like my mother raised me. I encourage friendships with all people that are morally sounds (using clean language, and being positive, etc). I love my crossfit community and will continue to practice this great art of self-improvement. Thanks for reading. Keep killing us coach!

Fun WOD, but those hang power snatches got heavy, and it was tough to lower them. Unbroken deads and OHS. After first round, broke snatches 5-1, 3-3, 4-2, and 3-1-1-1 at the end. Only bad part about today was that I got a small callous tear on the second to last hang power snatch. SG deadlift is a fun change-of-pace too.
