"A little while ago I joined the West Lansing Pack, a group of neighbors who get together at night to CrossFit at the local school playground. We make our own equipment and roll it to the school on dollies. Six months in, I'm down 42 lbs, doing workouts I never would have dreamed possible and am in the best shape of my life."

Hey Jason, Congratulations on your progress and impressive ingenuity. Since I travel a great deal, I have spent a lot of time in little community parks and schools doing pullups on playground structures just like yours. Thanks to Coach and Crossfit, I also am doing workouts I could not have dreamed possible. Way to go West Lansing Pack--great photo.

Weighted Push-Ups: 10 sets of 2
Resting 60 seconds between sets:
The Push up uses about 65% of body weight.
Also wearing 40lb vest and backpack loaded with 50lb slam ball=90lbs
BWT 205lbs x 65%=133.25lbs + 90lbs=223.25, 10 sets of 2

Am I the only one who doesn't agree with regularly using a children's playground as a gym? I mean how are the kids supposed to play? I'm sure the argument is "we're careful and we don't get in anyone's way". But if you're a mom walking up to a children’s playground to let your kids play and there is a grown man doing 2-pood kettlebell swings right by the slide or ring dips on the monkey bars, that's probably not a comforting feeling. I know that I wouldn’t want my kids having to navigate through a bunch of strange adults doing a WOD. Let me put it this way, if you are ever asked, "excuse me sir, can my daughter share the monkey bars, with you?" (just like the photo), then you need to find a new place to workout.

I’ll post my WOD weights later, I just couldn’t let this one go by without saying something.

Why are parents letting their kids out at night?

He clearly says they go there at night.

Comment #7 - Posted by: David at December 9, 2011 9:39 PM

@#4

Wouldn't the 65% be taken of the entire weight of the exercise - body weight, vest and backpack - instead of just your body weight then adding the vest and backpack? It seems like the pushup percentage would include all of those things based on the way the weight would still be affected by the fact that your feet are points of contact bearing some of the weight. Just to get a more accurate comparison for hen it came timeto load the weight on the bar instead...

205 + 90 = 295 * .65 = 191.75

Still, good on you. Way more than could have loaded onto my back for the workout.

I agree. I regularly bring my daughter to a nearby park that the local personal trainers and boot camps frequent. Maybe that's a different scenario since they are using the space to run a private business and for all I know the park that the west lansing pack uses sits empty all day. Never-the-less, when I saw the pictured I shared your concern.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Sammy at December 9, 2011 10:22 PM

Hey post # 6

We work out at 9pm at night. We are all parents who live in the neighbourhood (which is VERY close-knit by the way). There has never once been a child, or anyone, there when we work out. We are all very active community members and four of us are on the parent counsel at the school that we work out at. Trust me we don't bother anyone. In fact, people walking by the park comment on what a great idea we have.

Jamie (a member of the West Lansing Pack).

Comment #11 - Posted by: JME at December 9, 2011 11:05 PM

I work out in a park near my house. At 0500, when there are no children there. It's not hard to coexist w/ your neighbors, if you try a little.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Dux at December 9, 2011 11:22 PM

Rob, you are making me very nervous by benching with an open grip. Ya gotta make sure those thumbs are wrapped around that bar. Strong work as always though dude!

I will post numbers in the am.

@#7: The picture clearly shows this guy out during the day with a set of rings attached to the monkey bars.

@#9: Apparently I'm not the only one and apparently you're not a parent.

Straight up, your local children's playground is an inappropriate place to regularly do your workout. I'm as garage-gym as them come. I've been doing Crossfit before it had a name when Pavel Tsatsouline and Mike Mahler were the only ones writing about renegade workouts using bare-minimum equipment. I haven’t had a gym membership since college and have been building my own gym equipment for a decade. Before Crossfit had a website, I was doing workouts in my garage, in my back yard, in the woods, in the snow, and in the mud with my Marines. Through the Marine Corps, I’ve met Steve Cotter, Jeff Martone, and Coach Glassman and I have friends that own and operate a Crossfit Gym. I do the Crossfit WOD everyday (at least) with my Marines; and my wife does it to. The point is, I’m into this stuff as much as anyone but there are boundaries. You don’t go to a children’s playground; during the day especially, but even at night -- it’s a little creepy. Unless you know every kid and every parent there and you are all one tight group, then trust me, you are bothering someone, you’re causing parents not to bring their kids to the playground, and you are giving Crossfit a bad name. There are certain things you don’t do; and taking over a local children’s playground is one of them.

#7 look agian at the photo that is not night it is plan to see this photo is taken durning the day.So this tells me one of to things this is going on during the day hence #6 concern. Or this is yet another stage photo to make friends.

#14 are you serious family bonding taking your kids to the park so you can work out on the monkey bars that is a joke. Here is a tip for family bonding take a walk with your kids ride bikes I am gonna go out on a limb here spend time with THE KID that is family bonding, not doing pullups and swinging kb's around unsafe and wrong.

I am quite new to Crossfit but love this style of exercise.. I am a PT and have also taken my clients to the park to workout, it is an awesome spot to workout w/ clients. Parks are public property. I am with you Jason! I have occupied a playground to get a wod in. To the haters, of course this is a staged photo. 2 reasons: would he really do his box jumps right under his rings. 2nd: makes for a better photo when you don't have to worry about the flash at night and the photo being too dark. I have gone to the park at 6am with no kids and in te evenings when the majority of kids should be in bed. Only once did I see 2 kids playing and I adjusted my wod to not get in their way. The 2 moms with them thought it was great for what I was doing and the kids even asked if they could hang on the rings when I was done. No one was hurt and everyone got along just great. I would clear my equipment out of their way the moment I felt I was keeping any kid from playing on a kids playground. Jason keep working hard and making progress my man!

I'm a little confused after watching those two videos. While Rob's workout looks like a Max Effort bench day @ > 80% of 1RM, Dave suggests that we use 60% of 1 RM and go for speed/explosiveness (Dynamic Effort). So what should this WOD be - ME or DE bench day?

In regards to Oleg at #32, it's your choice. If you haven't done max effort work in a while work up to a heavy double. If you do regular strength training and no dynamic work, turn it into a dynamic day and work on speed. Take 50-60% of your raw bench max, add some chains or bands if you got them and hit the workout. Remember to keep your shoulder blades tight and elbows tucked most of the time.

@ #6, I agree...a childrens' playground should not be used as an adult gym. I am a parent and fully understand trying to balance finding time to work out with two kids while my husband is deployed, but I still think a playground is inappropriate. If I showed up to my local park with my kids and some guy, or a group of adults, were there working out with weights and other equipment, I'd be pretty irritated because I would feel like my kids couldn't just run around and play and use the playground like was intended for.

I'm a Mom to 3 children, just coming into the pre-teen world, so we still visit playgrounds.

LOVE the role modeling!!

After or before your WOD, let my kids swing on the rings, jump up on the box.. Impress them with your kips & KB swings. Let them help you pack up & hall your gear.

Make them feel welcome & included to the extent that is appropriate (& me, too, for that matter).

Smile. Share. Teach. Include. No Problem.

Apparently some missed this post. They workout as a group at 9pm. I hardly think there are parents taking children to parks at this time. If there are children hanging out at the park at that time something is wrong. I think a group of parents using a publicly funded park to crossfit is great. Their tax dollars help maintain it, they use it at a late time as to not bother others. It is an excellent idea. Keep up the good work West Lansing Pack.

Do people really have nothing better to do than complain, gripe, and argue about things they obviously FAIL TO THINK ABOUT!?!
Rob Orlando is stronger and more experienced than 98% of you on here. And he uses lots of chalk. I'd say he knows his limits.
And yep--hogging the playground at 9pm is just low. Those guys should really know better. Shame on them.

can't do benchpress since rotator cuff tore, but weirdly, can still incline bench:
135, 155, 165, 175, 185 (F), 185 (F), 175, 180

then did 4 sets of deadlift 225-245 X 10, jumprope 200 single-unders, 10 doubleunders

Comment #75 - Posted by: bobr at December 10, 2011 2:49 PM

@ comment 69...as one fo the 2% that Rob is not stronger than, the reason people complain about Rob's grip is that history has shown us that in no way is it safe. This is the reason most powerlifting fed outlaw the grip or make you sign a "death release" if you want to use it.

No. 2, why does the CrossFit nation continue to CHOOSE to be weak on this one exercise. The results of this WOD would normally indicate that as a group CrossFitters need more bench work to "equalize" this lift and put it in the same league as their other lifts. As a trainer at a commercial gym I routinely see small guys who can bench well over 300lbs....but not here. If it were any other exericise wouldn't we all be working much harder at it to improve it?

I'll take a try to answer #72 -
I think the coaches have thought through the functional value of each of the lifts, and prioritize them based on this. I don't think they care how it compares to other workout programs. The upper body emphasis is on pressing overhead instead of benching.

Strict OHP: 135x3,145x3,155x3,165x3,175x3
Incline Bench: 185x3,195x3,205x3,215x3,225x3,235x3
Bench WOD: 235x2,245x2,255x2,260x2,265x2,270x2,275x2,2,2,280x2

To those freaking out about Rob's thumbless grip, relax. He's done quite a bit of pressing, he won't lose it. This grip also allows the bar to sit in a little better (further from the base of the fingers) position on the palm that turns out to be safer on the shoulders and a more advantageous pressing position, especially for OHP.

To those who are freaking out about the group that works out at a playground. Its a school playground, almost EVERY school playground is closed to the general public at night, or essentially once school is let out. So they probably aren't working out amongst kids playing. You all have to learn to look at all the facts before jumping to conclusions.

185lb all sets (actually went 12 sets)

Finished with 1k row in 3:20. New PR by 8 seconds.

Then did max height box jumps with risers, got up to 46". Worked my way back down adding one more box jump for every riser removed. Good workout.

And to disprove the argument that he is there without kids, there are TWO in the picture on the right-hand side. One is crossing the bridge and the other is walking up to the bridge. Behavior like this is totally creepy.

Unfortunately I could not do this as prescribed since I do not have a weight rack. I did place a wooden bench from my dining room set on my deck and balanced the barbell between two railings to make a "makeshift" bench rack, but I didn't trust it with a full weight amount. Anyway, I did:

Bench press 7 sets, 2 min rest between sets:
10 reps per set, 105 pounds

You should look for a new gym. Like it or not, benching is one of the big three lifts that make up powerlifting and is a staple in every major sports strength and conditioning program. To dismiss it as a "globo-gym" movement is silly. Benching, if done correctly, is a full body movement.

False grip on a bench is not my cup of tea, but false grip on a press is definitely the way to go. More efficient bar path, and no danger.

I'm a little late to this party but I applaud the West Lansing Pack. I regularly use the playground at my kids' elementary school for CrossFit WODs and hope to build a group following which maybe can one day transform into my own box. I go and am done my WOD before 6:30AM, well before anyone connected at all with the school is even on the premises. On weekends, I'll go when no one else is using the playground and that is frequent. I can check before I go b/c I can see it from my home's back porch. My 2 daughters have even gone with me to the playground during my workouts. My older one likes to watch my time and tell me how much time I have left or how long I've gone and will stack little stones or pieces of mulch to count my rounds or reps for me. The younger one just gets on the swings by herself or chases her sister around. They love it. "Daddy! When are you going to workout? We want to come!".

Did this one a little differently. Didn't pay attention to time, but just tried to lift heavy. Took 2-3 mins between rounds.

135-155-175-195-215-225-235(PR)-245 x1 (pr) - 250f

I think I can get 250 if I'm not so preexhausted.

I followed this WOD with overhead squatting a little bit:
95 lbs x 10
115 lbs x 10
135 lbs x 6 (3 sets of this)
inbetween sets of OHS I was doing high height box jumps.. I kept increasing the height of reps of about 6-8 from 36" - about 44"
I did a full minute AMRAP DU for 124 reps and then stretched and went home...
Not too long of a workout.. I was going to do technique work on FS and Ring HSPUs but I've been feeling queezy and my stomach is kind of messed up lately.. my diet is decent.. not perfect, but i'm feeling nausious and light headed lateley... I had a bout with almost throwing up for the first time ever a couple weeks ago, but that feeling has been coming back and not really going... I think I'm going to see my doctor... diet, sleep all about the same... in fact my diet has been really good lately (zoning really well with almost all veggies for carbs lately) It's like I feel hung over and it comes and goes.. I don't drink almost ever and so I don't know what is going on.. hopefully this will pass.

These probably wern't my two rep maxes becasue I was being cautious without a spotter and all, so then I finished off with the following:

135 x 15
115 x 15
95 x 15
65 x 25
45 x 50

That did the trick.
