compare to date anyone? this feels like early this year or late last year...

Comment #1 - Posted by: Mel/38m/5'10"/175 at December 2, 2011 5:07 PM

I would love 10 hours if sleep every day....BUT really who has time for that?????

Comment #2 - Posted by: Cvdh at December 2, 2011 5:16 PM

Who besides these people can afford to get that much sleep? 10 hrs really? I must be jealous but I struggle to get 6 between work, errands, and crossfit.

Comment #3 - Posted by: NickW at December 2, 2011 5:18 PM

Glad to see Coach occupying the daily quote section. Will CF ever offer Glassman apprenticeships? I'd apply.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Kevin at December 2, 2011 5:31 PM

10 hours of sleep? In my dreams maybe! Pun intended :)

Comment #5 - Posted by: Playoff Beard at December 2, 2011 5:32 PM

Done this work for AMRAP 15 - 5 rounds plus a row and a few push ups and was exhausted. 20 minutes is going to be tough. But that's why no compare to last time - we did 15 minutes.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Dude at December 2, 2011 5:44 PM

I would really like to know what the average Crossfitter gets for sleep... Last year preparing for regionals I was only getting between 4-6 hours of sleep with multiple workouts per day working 60-80 hours a week.... This year I quit my job so that I can workout full time and I average between 7-9 hours of sleep. My work capacity in the gym has increased and my diet is impeccable... my only issue I don't have a damn job

Comment #7 - Posted by: McBeard at December 2, 2011 5:52 PM

Americano all the way.

Dude - thanks, when was the 15-min AMRAP?

Comment #10 - Posted by: Mel/38m/5'10"/175 at December 2, 2011 6:08 PM

That's the one thing I don't like about my job (firefighter) - the lack of sleep. Anybody know of ways to compensate for sporadic sleep?

Comment #11 - Posted by: jct at December 2, 2011 6:15 PM

I'm impatient - so here's the answer. This came up 1/14/11 as a 15-min AMRAP. Got 7 rounds + 224m. Is 10 rounds doable?

Comment #12 - Posted by: Mel/38m/5'10"/175 at December 2, 2011 6:20 PM

try and take small naps of 15 minutes.. Dats wht i do during exam periods when i hv to go all nighters. It keeps u fresh and active..
Plus can someone pls tell me alternative for row??

Comment #13 - Posted by: nilesh at December 2, 2011 6:24 PM

Small 15 minute naps eventually lead to not waking back up when you need to. An alternate is Sumo Deadlift High Pulls

Comment #14 - Posted by: Sampson Havelka at December 2, 2011 7:06 PM

Yea, unfortunately 10 hours of sleep not happening for me. I would love to try it sometime, but full time job as paramedic + part time firefighter/medic for another company + 1 year old son at home = no 10 hours of sleep for me!!

Time for science!

There is a boatload of relevant studies on sleep, sleep deprivation, circadian rhythms, etc. available through google scholar and other academic websites; so if you're super interested go check those out!

My favorite sleep study is the one done at UCSD looking into the relationship between longevity and sleep habits. Turns out 6-7 hours seems to be the sufficient amount. People who get more than 8 hours of sleep have a similar mortality rate to moderately obese people.

Personally, I feel and perform the best when I sleep for six hours and wake up naturally with sunlight.

Been in the military for 18 yrs, have a family with a 7 month old daughter,a house to take care of, and WODs when I can squeeze them in. i would be lucky to get 6-7 hrs on a regular basis, if i had a regular sleep schedule. 10 hrs is pretty much a fantasy in my world...will be doing SDHPs instead of rowing since i don't have 1 in my garage gym.

Comment #18 - Posted by: Jason at December 2, 2011 8:39 PM

@#13

The RX'd substitute for rowing according to Crossfit's FAQ section is 1 SDHP per 10 meters of rowing with 45/30 pounds for men/women respectively. So for this one, 25 SDHPs per round.

Comment #26 - Posted by: TomO/45/M/200 at December 3, 2011 2:15 AM

Ok sorry to post that but, the purpose of my comment is not to offend anyone or starting any kind of controversy but some questions come to my mind. How the hell is it possible to reach 13 rounds (unless being Chris Spealler, Graham Holmberg or Rich Froning Jr)? And if it' s possible what' s the avg rowing split time on the rower and for the push ups for guys hitting 13 rounds or more?
1200"/13=92" per round, if you consider you lose 10" on the transition between the rower and the push ups and 10" between the push ups and the rower, it left 72" for 250m row and 25 push ups. Yikes.
I m not pretending being an elite Crossfit Athlete (far from me this idea) but here are some of my PR:
5k row: 18:23
2k row: 6:57
1K row: 3:17
Tabata push ups: 20
Cindy: 30 rounds + 6 squats
Angie: 15:06
1500 push ups in an hour
100 sets of 10 push with 10" rest in half an hour
An even with these stats(including push ups and rowing), i' ve only hit 11 rounds + 21m row.
So i just would want to know the avg time of rowing and push ups of you guys hitting 13 rounds or more?
Don' t see any irony or sarcasm in my comment i m just curious.
Thanks and i hope i didn' t offend anyone, that was not my purpose.
PS: Excuse my english I' m french.

I don't have a row machine but have a seated low row machine. Any suggestions on what weight and how many reps to do on a seated low row cable machine?

Comment #30 - Posted by: Ryan at December 3, 2011 4:40 AM

Morning. I like the sleep conversation. At the end of the day there will always be a huge gap between athletes of any sort who work at their sport, and athletes who work at something other than their sport such that they can play. Rest and recovery fills that gap. It's well nigh impossible to routinely sleep 10 hours if one must be otherwise employed or engaged (see: stay at home Mom).

We should be impressed, though, by these young athletes who DO get 10 hours of sleep because IMO that shows a dedication to their sport, their performance. How many times have you awakened to read the sports page or look at your computer to find yet another story about some late-night tomfoolery by an athlete who was NOT getting 10 hours of sleep? CrossFit, football, skiing...doesn't matter. Serious athletes who play for pay are serious about the importance of sleep and recovery, like Nadia, et al above.

How about the rest of us? (Get it?) I read a very compelling article that reviewed research on sleep cycles, those repeating patterns we experience when we sleep. Turns out that most humans sleep in repeating intervals of ~90 minutes. Our best, most restful sleep occurs when we awaken at the end of a cycle. 4.5, 6, 7.5,9 hours of sleep, or thereabouts, turn out to be ideal if you have a 90 minute cycle. I have found this to work well for me, especially when traveling across time zones. I will be fresher with ~4.5 hours of sleep than 5.25, for example. I routinely get 6/night, but really function best on 7.5, with the occasional 9 hour re-charge every month or so.

Try it. Get up when you wake up. Add ~15:00 to your bedtime (to account for the time to fall asleep) and see what your sleep cycle is, then aim for multiples of that number.

That is, until you can become a full-time CrossFitter!

@ Vats -- I agree with your comments. The only thing I can think of is that push ups are an exercise where there's a huge difference in power output, speed and fatigue depending on how they're done. Hand release at bottom to lockout at top is far more difficult than other interpretations of the exercise. But this WOD doesn't specify technique, so direct comparison can be difficult.

In regards to sleep depravation - I'm 51 and I'm an intensive care unit doctor. We have terrible sleep even without all the stress going on in your mind. I imagine the military guys out there have it way worse (God bless you). Best I've come up with is taking a 30-60 min nap any time I have an hour to give in the afternoon. The best amount of time for you may differ, but I think you don't want to get too deep, just relax. Helps me more than any study I've ever read

Intentionally limited to 8 rounds. Still tough.

Got 7 rounds back in January on the 15 min version of this WOD. Am now in an active rest/recovery cycle, so I decided on 8 rounds of 2.5 min, taking as much rest as I could earn each round. Pushups all chest and thighs to deck to lockout, but no hand release.

PUs: needed a set of 4 and one of 6 before I could get the 10 consecutive in.
DUs: Tried to get 2 sets of 50. The first set was a tripping disaster 'til about 24. Second try at 50 consecutive: 38, then 10, then 2.

Sleep: Got rid of our T.V. about 14 years ago. Have gotten A LOT more sleep since then..... :)

6 rounds + approx 100 meter row

For kicks:
2 sets of 10 kipping pull ups
100 double unders:
Tried to get these in 2 sets of 50. The first attempt at 50 consecutive was a tripping fiasco to 24, then cleaned up from there. Second attempt at 50 consecutive: 38, 10, 2.

Good day.

I think once I sort out the pacing on the rower & try those pushups in sets of 5 rather than sets of 10, I'll be able to get more done in 20 min.

The push-ups really slowed me up, the row was not hard, but after doing 150 push-ups on thursday I had to take lots of breaks in the push-up sets.

k #152,

Perhaps, k, perhaps. But what if CF is actually a health prescription? What if you are so poor at all of the things "across the board" that only training "across the board" will improve your health?

You are just one more person who fails to understand the difference between GPP and SPP. Can you fill me in on how one could use GPP to enhance one's SPP? No? Perhaps you could ask Amanda Beard the Olympic swimmer now training CF to lay a stronger, fitter base upon which to layer her SPP.

Just one more "CrossFit isn't enough for top distance training" post. Now awaiting a companion "CrossFit doesn't make you strong enough" post and everyone will be at the party.

Comment #163 - Posted by: Frank at December 4, 2011 5:51 AM

Bingo, I think it is when you start CrossFit. If you are an advanced athlete when you start CrossFit then you will probably have losses in your specialty. A beginner will have great gains. I've lost power and speed doing just CrossFit. I've made great gains in other areas though.

CrossFit has a place in all athletes arsenal of training but it can not be the end all.

CFWU-3. Reg except no dips 3rd. Superman. Burgener. DU.
8 rounds + row & 20 PU.
Row not bad. Used real long strokes to keep good pace/500m - bar to upper chest. PU real broken on later rounds after first 12 or so. Good ROM though.

8 rounds on the dot, done a week late owing to CF-box WODs.

Need more pushup endurance.

11 rounds as rx'd.

Did bench press beforehand, so that may have hurt me on the pushups a bit. Still, awesome, WOD!

As rx'd, 9 rounds + 250 meters.

Push-ups the limiting factor. Felt strong on the rows - staying just under 1:50 pace. Had enough in the tank to go balls to the wall on the last row, trying to finish it in the allotted time. On the last row, my stroke rate was in the high 30's, and I was pulling sub-1:40. While I would not have wanted to keep going, it felt sustainable for 250m.

Killer.
8 rounds + 250m

I probably could have gotten a solid 9 rounds if it weren't for the walk in between the row machine and the place where we're allowed to do pushups, coupled with my lack of understanding about the rowing machine's computer system.
