I am still not totally sold on the Reebok thing. I think it is great that we have found a major clothing manufacturer to partner with for promotion and what not. Yet, I really am not all to satisfied with the quality of clothing. Regardless though, this train is moving forward. We are either on it or off it.

$120.00 for those shoes! Yikes! They're probably pre selling testing the waters & see who's diving into the $120 price. I wonder how much the Oly shoes will cost.

Comment #11 - Posted by: G at November 9, 2011 7:19 PM

The Reebok sponsorship is fantastic for Crossfit for the simple fact that its broadening the awareness of our beloved sport. Whether Reebok was the right strategic fit or not is a different question. But what I find most concerning is the lack of creativity and aesthetic appeal in the clothing and shoes. None of the apparel catches my eye, especially not for the prices charged. And the shoes are just another disappointment. From a design standpoint, New Balance blows Reebok out of the water. If you bought these shoes you'd simply be buying a logo. Nothing more. Go back to the drawing board Reebok. Or better yet, hire me an I'll show you how to bring the excitement of crossfit to you line.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Dknee at November 9, 2011 7:22 PM

Can someone explain how the $125 colored shoes help me perform constantly varied, high intensity, functional movments mo' better?

Or are they just supposed to look cool?

Comment #13 - Posted by: Eric at November 9, 2011 7:24 PM

$120, really...hahah. I was going to get the oly shoe but if the price for the sneaker is any indication as to how much it will be, close to $200 is my guess, then forget it.

I like Coach B's style, "this is what works for me and what I teach", in comparison to "this is the only way", which is so much more common in these matters. So glad we got you Coach!

Eric, clothing choices are not about reductionist logic, and lucky for you, all you have to do it not buy any expensive shoes and there's zero consequence to you no matter how high Reebok shoes are priced

Comment #17 - Posted by: Apolloswabbie 74 200 47yoa at November 9, 2011 8:17 PM

so much bitching and whining about a pair of shoes you are under no obligation to buy.

don't want to spend $120 on some shoes? cool, don't buy them

don't like the colours or designs? cool, don't buy them.

don't like the Reebok brand or their production methods? you got it...buy another brand

Comment #18 - Posted by: nick in sydney at November 9, 2011 8:48 PM

With regards the comments of Crossfit partnering with Reebok, I think that the people who feel the brand has "sold out" are the me people who feel that the band they listened to "way before they got big" now sucks because they're getting some recognition and becoming successful in the wider world. In reality, we should be happy that the little known garage based upstart is now becoming renowned worldwide and has the sponsorship to prove it.

Growth of a good product is inevitable and should be met with an open mind on how to further reach more people and spread the word. Focus on the quality of the product and if sponsorships come in along the way then it's more marketing for the brand. Thats part of the point of bringing something good to the masses, coincidentally discussed a few days ago in the post about Steve Jobs solving the "Innovator's Dilemma."

There are always other shoes, like the Dunlop Volley for us Aussies - only $22 from Target, you don't mind wearing them out. And Happy Birthday USMC! Would be good if we had that kind of service pride!

120 bucks for a pair of minimalist shoes... CrossFit is great and it opened my eyes to a WONDERFUL way of life and training for the rest of life. I will still use it to be better when I actually play sports, still go to its website for training suggestions, and claim my Level One Cert on my CV...

But.

CrossFit, in my humble opinion, is now a brand and no longer a training methodology the way it was when I started. When I first found it it espoused evolution and open source betterment. I hope Mr. Glassman makes tons of money. I honestly do. But I think eventually, the voices and thoughts that will drive what is thought of as CrossFit training will come from those not associated with HQ. Too much time is put into making money and not progressing the discussion on betterment of fitness training.

Comment #25 - Posted by: bamf at November 9, 2011 10:01 PM

I understand all the complaining, and you are probably doing the best thing possible to get it changed. People aren't buying from it as much as they are buying from the new store as much as they buy from their boxes or other sites that seem to have the same style as the old store that was loved by many. I have been disappointed in the new store since it changed about 6 months ago. I love all my crossfit shirts from the old store. I wish I could have bought more shirts when i had the chance. Until they figure out that something needs to change they just wont make as much money as they could.

Thanks for the Wilfred Owen poem. So true. My only complaint is the prices as many have said. I would love to support and show off my love of CrossFit by buying a "true" CrossFit Tshirt or shorts. But the prices are crazy they aren't even resonible I mean $100 for a long sleeved shirt? Oh well guess Glassman won't get my money....well other than affiliate fees.

For all of you crying about the $120 price tag on the Reebok shoes. Where were your complaints with the price of the Inov-8s ($115)? Vibram KSO Trek ($125)? Nike free run+ ($120)? Adidas Adizero Mana ($80)? New Balance Minimus ($100) and all the rest of the shoes which are prevalent on mainsite videos or are generally popular as a CrossFit shoe...The point is, the Reebok shoe is priced around fair market value considering what the competition has been selling at for a few years. You want to whine about expensive shoes, you have a bigger problem to solve than just Reebok.

Comment #33 - Posted by: Brent at November 10, 2011 5:46 AM

People should buy the New Balance shoes that are made in America. Yeah, they are somewhat pricey but at least you are supporting a job in the US rather than buying the imported Reebok stuff.

Comment #34 - Posted by: Sabby at November 10, 2011 6:05 AM

Poor Reebok... but here goes. I don't blame CrossFit for any partnerships, products, or any decisions made. They just reacted as anyone would when trying to work a business plan that is successful-create a great product that someone will eventually want to buy in to. Well done. Reebok, however, has just seemingly always been a day late and a dollar short. Always behind Nike and now UnderArmour, and as of next year will lose their NFL contract to Nike, which I hate to see what the ramifications of the loss of that revenue will be. The clothing for the CrossFit line obviously took its cues from Lululemon, I mean just compare the websites. And consequently, the pricing was taken as well. Problem lies with the products themselves as being simply boring when compared to the electrifying brands also out there. And with all the hype leading up to the release of the shoes, I don't focus on the price so much as I do on the aspect that they don't stand out against the other CrossFit shoe brands. In summation I feel that CrossFit, such a powerful and productive way of forging elite fitness, deserved a much stronger punch from a partner that invested so much. Major disappointment. Now back to business... 3,2,1,GO!!!

Some tasty waves, a cool buz and a pair of Chuck Taylor All Stars suits me just fine. I'll take the price of these reeboks and buy some useful equipment for my garage gym!

Comment #38 - Posted by: Bruce at November 10, 2011 7:23 AM

RE:Shoes

I'm a New Balance Minimus guy myself. They work perfectly for me in every single exercise but rope climbs. For those I use a cheap pair of running shoes that the rope can eat through on the way down (instead of eating through my foot).

That being said, the Reebok shoes look nice. I might see about picking up a pair as an everyday casual shoe. My current outside-of-the-gym shoes have too much heel on them, and the Reeboks look nice and flat. I'll probably wait until I can see a few reviews of them first, though.

Also, $120 for shoes is in line with the going rate. By all means keep complaining about it, though. You sound like you're a hundred years old and I think it's hilarious. "In my day, candy cost a penny, and you could watch the talkies all afternoon for a nickel!"

Comment #42 - Posted by: Mark Eaton at November 10, 2011 7:56 AM

On the subject of people saying Crossfit is selling out and this whole thing is going to turn into a marketing campaign and not about fitness. As long as the power remains in the hands of the affiliate boxes, Crossfit will be about fitness. As long as we have people who care about making people better and not about making money, Crossfit will be about fitness. Maybe there will be isolated cases where athletes sell out for sponsors but as a whole, Crossfit is about the people in the Boxes- not on in front of a camera

Listening to the Pastorale right now. Great recording, amazing quality for a live performance of a favorite work. Way to do it, HQ!

Comment #45 - Posted by: Kamper M/47/200/74" at November 10, 2011 8:24 AM

I really could care less who Crossfit partners with if that partnership means HQ can continue to post these amazing workouts, articles, and videos that we all benefit from every day. With contributors like Burgener, Rippetoe, Takano, K-Star, Tucker, to name a few, not to mention coach Glassman himself, I don’t see the quality of the programming suffering at all. Crossfit is and I believe will continue to be the leader in fitness programming and education for the masses, regardless of who they may partner with.

With regards to Reebok, I’m not a fan, never have been. That’s just my preference though. Like #38, I’ll stick with my Chucks. I can say this about Reebok. I love the way they have adopted the Crossfit way of life into their corporate settings. You gotta admit the picture of the company workout (111103) was pretty impressive.

Crossfit in a lot of ways is what you make of it. If you can afford it, you can pay box fees and work with a trainer and experience the community first hand (I highly recommend to anyone just starting), or you can workout from home, the route I have recently decided to take. Another beauty of Crossfit is that it is very DIY friendly, a fact that they proudly admit and encourage. Just look at all the how to build your own ______ on the discussion site and articles in the Journal, another Crossfit gem.

Anyways, IMHO the Crossfit/Reebok marriage is not going to affect me one way or another, nor do I believe it is diminishing the mission, vision, or core of Crossfit – Forging Elite Fitness.

Thanks again HQ!

Great Wilfred Owen poem.
Interesting that Crossfit should post an antiwar poem.
Owen knew the horrors of the "war to end all wars" and was killed before it ended.
I think he would be disappointed if he could see how little we have learned since 1918.

Brent (#33) You should check the prices on those shoes again before posting such inflated prices. Free's are more around $85, Inov8's are around $90. That's around a 33% increase for the RBK shoes. That's significant. Before anyone says "you have no problem with paying to be a part of an affiliate....", I don't pay affiliate fees.

Comment #52 - Posted by: Andrew at November 10, 2011 11:47 AM

@Andrew 53 @Brent 33

Andrew's got it right - Free's are $85. Reebok is not giving a comparable product at a comparable price. It is setting a price premium that it hopes Crossfitters will pay.

Reebok is just trying to take advantage of a market of dedicated users who they think will pay premium prices for "crossfit" gear. Another commenter pointed out that Reebok's "crossfit" gear is exactly like Lululemon's, price and all. So true. Too bad, Reebok could have been an innovator.
