I keep getting befuddled why HQ releases videos of contrary views of how to do the kipping pull-up. Why can't they just stick to Jeff Tuckers? The one in this video introduces a swing into the kip which means the athlete will get a maximum of maybe 4 before they are out of control with the pendulum effect.

Sunday musings...

1) Monsoon. It's raining. Again. I went to bed in Cleveland and woke up in Portland, OR.

2) Edgy. The best way to describe my mood the last 24 hours. No idea why. Well, I guess I do know why: I made the mistake of reading one too many editorials by folks who have decided that people who do what I do, fix people, are evil.

The cure? Probably reading more articles by Jeff Tucker!

3) Yearning Curve. Courtesy of "Crankshaft". How good is that phrase? There are all kinds of ways to draw that particular curve. Crankshaft, a bus driver who had a cup of coffee as a minor league pitcher, limits himself to very rare occasions of reminiscing. He wanted more in those days, and he misses those days terribly. Yet, in his tortured wisdom, he realizes that he can't go back, and he can never change either what came before or what came after.

So he visits that time, opens the window to that little room tucked away in his attic rarely and for the briefest of moments, lest his yearning increase.

Times like those, times like Crankshaft's stint as a pitcher for the Toledo Mudhens, are the classic double-edged sword. When distressed a quick visit can re-set your compass or fill your tank just enough to get through whatever it is that's got you down. Spend too much time there, in Toledo for example, and nothing in the here and now might measure up. The yearning can overwhelm the living.

Some places and some times were so special that the yearning can become an irresistible force, driving you back in real time to bring your present day self to Toledo. The yearning curve as a boomerang, if you will. My in-laws gave in to this and just visited Cap Ferrat in Southern France. They yearned to walk the quaint streets of their young marriage, to eat a breakfast of fresh milk and baguettes left in the box outside their tiny apartment while gazing at the impossibly blue waters of a harbor dotted with tiny sailboats. What they got, of course, was the hustle and bustle and hurley-burley of a modern tourist trap en francais.

The yearning curve is never a circle.

A very nice bunch of college buddies, mostly football teammates, recently include me and a couple of other "youngsters" in an epic email thread dedicated to college memories. It's been fun reading it for sure. We all had 4.5 second 40 yd. dashes. Everyone maxed his bench each time we lifted. Each or us had a full head of hair, and we always got the girl. A magical place and a magical time, indeed. It can be easy to yearn for a place like that.

But it, like Cap Ferrat ca. 1975, is no longer there. It only exists in a picture, or an email thread, or behind a door or a window in the attic of our minds, available for a brief visit when the yearning curve peaks.

Like Toledo.

I'll see you next week...

Have a new piece of equipment for my garage/outdoor gym.
Helped the hubby change a tire on the dump trailer. Had a puncture in the sidewall. Unable to fix.
An 11x22.5 is just perfect for my tire flip workouts.
Finished todays workout with 233 yards of tire flips. Took 162 fips at 12 minutes.
The lower back is on fire.

Happy birthday Kelli.

Had to do in the box today for convenience. Set the treadmill at an 8.0 and just let it run - I would hop on and run .12 miles. Split my laps on my timer, and could see my pullup times growing - broken sets in round 4 and 5. Overall, I'm happy with my run times and other exercises - all were pretty consistent.

A Sam Adams Octoberfest afterwards is really hitting the spot.

W/U: run 200m; bar hang, 30 sec; static stretch of shldrs; BP, 3x5 at 130-150-165 (de-load).

As Rx: 32:45.

C/D: skipped.

Runs on outside road course (52F, 83% humidity, wearing VFF). As always, each run included a trip up and down a flight of stairs. Usually it doesn't make much of a difference. Doing it 20 times probably did. Still, breaking-up 100 reps of each exercise with runs made everything feel pretty easy. This is a fun workout.

This was my first Crossfit workout, and I completed it in 59 minutes. I had to scale is considerably, but I did complete it. I have admired crossfit athletes for years, but as a morbidly obese woman in my 30's, I never thought I could even consider it. In July of this year, I started a juice fast. I started at 309lbs, and as of today, I have lost 75lbs. I am fasting for 3 more weeks, and then switching to to whole raw fruits and veggies and lean meats. For the first 60 days of the fast, I didn't work out. Six weeks ago, I started walking for 90 minutes every other day. Then 3 weeks ago I added Zumba classes on the alternate days (small town, only class available). Last week I joined the gym and have played with some crossfit style workouts. But today...I did it.

I had to replace the pull ups with lat pull downs, and the the push ups with a bench press, but I completed all five rounds and I feel like a million dollars.

Avg. HR 181, peak 192. I used to love 200's, but when they're strung together like this, with no time to rest, they're really "THINO's," "Two Hundreds In Name Only!"

Fantastic job Laura and Kevin, and beautifully crafted bingo.

Am I hallucinating, or does it seem like there are a lot more over 30 and 40 yr. olds on the mainsite lately?

Thats a lot of rowing...

c/d 13 single unders, and gave up when right knee said "Don't like that"

Didn't think I was going to be able to walk today after shredding my Achilles / heel yesterday, much less work out (or row), but Kelly Starrett saved the day with "Your Calves are Tight, Bro" -- wfs http://sanfranciscocrossfit.blogspot.com/2008/11/your-calves-are-tight-bro.html -- the stretches in that post got the ankle/heel back to functional within 1/2 a day. Still tender & some rehab to do, but wow did I need those stretches.

m/45/180lbs/6' 42:26 did handstand pushups instead of pullups which took a little longer since I was doing them on a brick wall and my heals kept getting caught in the brick.

39:45 with strict pullups. I did this at my school's rec center and afterward, as I was lying on the ground, another student asked if I was alright... good wod.

Miserable in every respect.

They should name this WOD the Kaiser Soze because I lived through it once and don't ever want to see it again.

catching up on this one. 47:16 (slowest:3rd round at 10:20, fastest: 5th @ 8:50; that's too much variance (Row 250m instead of run and AbMats (sit ups always sneak up on me))

This has to be one of the longest WODS ever, but I really dig one's like this where it's pull-up, push-ups, &c. Egyed must be half machine half terminator (as well as perhaps being Hungarian w/ a name like that:-)

Pretty disapp. Hoping for lower 30's. Pace on runs terrible. Did similar WOD the day before-MU, pistols, etc. Maybe could use some rest?

Had to use a treadmill, so it made sense to combine 200's to 400's. Also cut out the sit-ups since my abs were sore from the last WOD. Overall a great effort; could shave some time off pull-ups by not breaking up the sets so much.
