Right about the time I dont think I have anymore on these WOD's I remind myself there is yet another "hero" not coming home. I usually get the chills as the adrenaline kicks in and I get it done.

Dear Crossfit,

Please check the accuracy of your information. The unit patch that Carse is wearing on his left sleeve is a 36th Engineer Brigade Patch. I know because I wear that patch everyday.

Very Respectfully,

Loved the HQ video.

Russ, besides your effort, I loved your comment that CROSSFIT is a place that always reminds us about our heroes...

I also love seeing that so many from the HQ team embrace the methodology they manage - that's inspiring too.

Tony

Comment #11 - Posted by: Tony Blauer at October 1, 2011 11:54 PM

He is a specialist, not a corporal. Second time CF has gotten a soldier's rank wrong in the last 2 postings. I don't know how hard it is to reference a rank structure diagram. It's disrespectful to get the info wrong.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Ryan at October 2, 2011 12:31 AM

@Ryan

Generally we strive to award the next higher rank, or in this case a lateral rank after death. The release has him ranked as a Specialist, but perhaps after it was all said and done he was awarded the lateral rank. Either way, great Soldier died fighting for freedom, he will be missed.

Jake

Comment #13 - Posted by: Jake at October 2, 2011 2:38 AM

The Soldier's photo isn't necessarily a representation of exactly what he was authorized on the day he was killed. Could have easily been promoted to CPL in the right situation after the taking of this photo. Relax about the rank structure/patch accuracy critiques... that is not at all what is important about this sincere tribute from the CrossFit community. Do the WOD, remember the man.

Sunday musings...

1) Upwardly moral. I'm still chuckling about this.

2) "Earned American Exceptionalism." That's good stuff. Especially the 'earned' part.

3) Loneliness. What makes a successful CrossFit Affiliate gym has little to do with the stuff in the gym. It has little to do with the address, the structure, or the decor. What makes an Affiliate successful is the manner in which it combats the loneliness that exists in most commercial gyms.

Think about it. What is it like where you are working out if you, like me, are working out in a commercial gym? You are doing CrossFit, which almost certainly means that you are doing it alone. How many other solo exercisers are faithfully there? Not many, huh? It kinda explains the whole "personal trainer" thing to me, at least what goes on in the commercial gym. Most "personal trainers" are simply keeping the customer company, at least the ones I observe. They combat the loneliness.

The successful athletes I see in non-CrossFit gyms work out with one or several partners. This collaboration cuts the essential loneliness in half, at least. There's a kind of sterile safety that loneliness confers, in the gym and elsewhere. It explains, I think, the endless plateau occupied by most exercisers.

Not in a CrossFit gym, though. No, Sir. Not even in a commercial gym where two or more CrossFitters work together. The essential collaboration of spirit inherent in the CrossFit group instills a tiny dollop of courage, of fortitude, a dash of valor to the spirit that allows one to forge ahead and beyond.

It's there, beyond the boundaries of loneliness, that we succeed.

4) Failure. The secret to success just might be failure. Not abject failure, of course (although it's always cool to use the word 'abject'), nor consistent failure. But failure while pushing one's limits or while exploring the new and the unknown might be the magic ingredient in the success recipe.

Why? Success is not simply the absence of failure, it is the defeat of failure. Success is over-coming failure. Indeed, without having failed at something some time, how do you know what success is? How do you know what it's supposed to feel like?

Neither success nor failure need be any particular size. Small successes build confidence, and smallish failures teach. It's important to qualify acceptable failures, though. Failure caused by sloppiness or laziness is ALWAYS bad. On the other hand, failure encountered while stretching beyond one's limits, while reaching for something new, large, important...well...that's the type of failure from which lessons are learned.

It takes a certain chutzpa to put one's self at risk to fail while in the act of reaching further. I like Churchill's take on it: "Success is never final. Failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts."

Be brave.

I'll see you next week...

@18

I personlly dislike working out in a group and having to pay a ridiculous amount of money to socialize. It doesn't mean that I'm not making progress. I follow CFFB and workout on my own, and I'm making a lot of prgress.

Oh well, I know everyone has different schedules and different priorities. The strength gains and PR's on the benchmarks keep on coming, and that keeps me going as much as anything.

Ryan,
I appreciate your passion, but we do not compose Hero workouts without consulting multiple sources. The service member who recommended Carse cited his rank as Corporal, as did Congress here: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CREC-2011-02-18/html/CREC-2011-02-18-pt1-PgE289-3.htm, not to mention multiple media sources.

C/D: foam roll low back.

Bear crawl required shuttling back and forth the length of the gym 8 times each round. Still nursing a low back strain, which made both the cleans and the DLs difficult. Each rep was done carefully. Each set had to be broken to allow the fire in my low back to cool. Slow. But nothing I could do about it. Went as fast as I could today. I have a feeling things are going to be slow going until the back heals.

Done in your honor, Corporal Carse. RIP.

And yes, CPL Carse was a beast!

Two things:

1) My sons name is Karson (aka "Kars), which is why I picked this workout today. I just saw that Mr. Carse died on Feb. 8th (which is my sons birthday). Strange connection.

2) I am 27 years old, M, 185, and in overall pretty good shape. I did everything as recommended and finished in about 75 minutes. This is only my 2nd attempt at crossfit, but I am seeing these times are a lot less than mine. I know I have some catching up to do, but is there something I'm not picking up on? I thought I was keeping a decent pace, not great, but respectable. Then I get home (barely walking) and see that I just got blown out of the water by almost everybody. If someone says "rx" does that mean recommended times and weight? And if so, how can you guys do 185lb dead lifts and 95lb squat cleans that fast? Like I said, I'm in pretty good shape. Been on the P90x bandwagon the last couple of years. Did 23 rounds of Cindy fairly easy last night, followed up by Annie afterwards with no problem. But Carse just took me to the wood shed.

Just looking for some advice. Thanks in advance.

zeno is a sill bear. accidentally subbed squat snatch for clean. might have cost me a few minutes as it was the hardest part. needed the practise though. otherwise as rx'd. the run/walk/crawl upstairs to do the bear crawl cost me a few minutes too.

He was posthumously promoted to Corporeal and we are part of 36th EN BDE. He was in my platoon, we all miss him a lot. Thank you all for taking a moment when you do this to remember him.
