Any ideas on alternatives for sled pull?

Comment #1 - Posted by: Dave at September 27, 2011 5:16 PM

What is a good sub for sled pull?

Comment #2 - Posted by: KKing at September 27, 2011 5:35 PM

Maybe rope climbs? Using your arms only?

Comment #3 - Posted by: Bryan at September 27, 2011 5:38 PM

I was gonna say rope climbs arms only yea...also...if you have access to a rower, probably stand over the rower and do alternating pulls with each arm, simulating the sled pull motion.

Comment #4 - Posted by: JeffV M/27/5'7"/145 at September 27, 2011 5:42 PM

One of my all time favorite quotes, and applicable to just about all aspect of life!

Comment #5 - Posted by: Apolloswabbie 74 200 47yoa at September 27, 2011 5:50 PM

Sub for sled pull? Simple. Get something with a surface area (a piece of matting, carpet or big sheet of wood should suffice), put some heavy shit on top (plates, kettlebels, children, whatever), hold an end and drag it.

Alternatively you could get a strop, tie it through the centre holes of some plates and drag them.

CrossFit is everywhere, your only limit with equipment is your imagination.

Comment #6 - Posted by: kKotz at September 27, 2011 6:28 PM

I like the rower idea, putting damper on 10 and just cranking out some big pulls

Comment #7 - Posted by: Mike Manning at September 27, 2011 6:51 PM

Yea arms only rope climbs would be great, Im thinking from supine to standing while wearing a vest? Thankfully my box has prowlers and ropes so that will do.

I have yet to see a 108# KB in person, so 110# barbell for me haha

Comment #8 - Posted by: Christian at September 27, 2011 6:53 PM

Shoulder issues?

Comment #9 - Posted by: Ray at September 27, 2011 6:54 PM

Comment #10 - Posted by: monica at September 27, 2011 6:57 PM

What exactly are shoulder to overhead? Are they like a push press?

Comment #11 - Posted by: zack at September 27, 2011 7:28 PM

Shoulder to overhead, I believe is just getting the barbell from a shouldered position to overhead position in any way possible: push-press, jerk (any type), shoulder press. Correct me if I am wrong guys.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Ed at September 27, 2011 9:33 PM

How far should i run to sub for the 20 cal row?

Comment #15 - Posted by: michael h at September 27, 2011 10:03 PM

Or perhaps, get some resistance bands and either put then around your waste or around arms and walk forward for however many steps/meters.

Comment #16 - Posted by: GWUS at September 27, 2011 10:31 PM

Run 2.25 - 2.5 minutes worth to sub for 20 cals. you need about 30 seconds to get the HR up, and and an additional 2 minutes at the average of 10 cal per minute burn with an elevated HR above 50%>RHR...give or take. Maybe 400m?

Comment #17 - Posted by: Mike L at September 27, 2011 10:49 PM

another sub for sled pull is getting an old truck tier or a tractor tier, a good 3-5 meter ordinary rope and pull, if its to light you fill the tier with rocks you find lying around or kettlebells, also old construction site debris is a good alternative, then pull outside on dirt road

Comment #18 - Posted by: Ille at September 28, 2011 12:03 AM

Comment #26 - Posted by: Riley at September 28, 2011 4:34 AM

22:38. Subbed 105 sdhp on 25lb bar and 400m row for sled pull. Fun to say the least at Blue Flame CF.

Comment #28 - Posted by: preacherman at September 28, 2011 5:44 AM

RE: Alternatives for sled pull

At the games, they were done with the arms (not dragging the sled). Given that, if you're working out at a globo-gym or other non-sled-friendly place, you could try isolateral bent-over dumbell rows as a sub. I'd say maybe 40 on each side with dumbells that are fairly heavy for you.

Comment #29 - Posted by: Ricky at September 28, 2011 5:45 AM

Any kind of rowing exercise would work. Seated cable rows would be a fine substitute

ESPN2 new time should list date as Sept 28.

Anybody else find it very ironic the announcement that Reebok owes $25 million for false claims on EasyTone advertisements? We scoffed at Reebok and sketchers when they made the claims, happy to see them called to task.
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/cases/reebok/index.shtm

Hopefully with Crossfit we have shown them the error in their past ways...

CrossFit Games Event 10

20 calorie Row
30 Wallball Shots, 20 pound ball
20 Toes to bar
30 Box jumps, 24" box
20 Sumo-deadlit high-pull, 108 pound kettlebell
30 Burpees
20 Shoulder to overhead, 135 pounds
120 foot Sled pull, sled plus 165 pounds

Scales
20 reps SDHP with 45lbs bar for row
toe to bar on rings
box jumps with step down from top
SDHP with barbell
sled drag 10 feet at a time

time 17:57

last time 15:14

Wow that sucks, I felt pretty good, But the box jumps must have took alot longer then I thought. I admit to taking breaks allright but not that bad.

The chest to overhead was better, 5/6/9 which is better then befor.
The toe to bar was rough but unbroken

Sumos were broke twice but just for seconds because the bar bounced funny and one side came up high.

Ah well, I gave it all I had. I hope tomorrow is better.

Hello CrossFitters! Been doing the main site WODs for about 3 weeks now and this is my first post!

Done in a basement gym w/no sled or med-balls so I had to mod a bit (also have to scale some weight):

20 cal row
30 thrusters, 65#
20 knees to elbow
30 box jumps, 24"
20 SDHP, 95#
30 Burpees
20 Push Press, 65#
400m row

20:21
(includes swapping weight on barbell)

13:39 w/ 180# sled

* made a sled for the WOD, but no 120' rope... so i attached a 15' chain and drug it back and forth across the gym for a total of 120'.

* the sled was just the bottom metal tray that sits under a hot water heater. i just stacked up four 45# bumpers in it and then attached a chain to pull it.

Comment #100 - Posted by: MarcusG 30 5'9" 155 at September 28, 2011 4:14 PM

40M/5'10"/171#

W/U: strict weighted bar dip, 3x3 at 35-45-55.

As Rx: 13:16.

C/D: foam roll.

New PR by 0:11. 110# KB. For the sled pull, I tied 180# of plates to one end of a 1.5" thick polypropylene (slippery) rope and pulled it, hand-over-hand, 20 feet, 6 times.

Still nuring a sprained low back and head/chest cold. Lungs were on fire. Not expecting a new PR. Last time it was hotter in the gym and we were on the third day of the cycle. So that probably explains it. Just as last time, the burpees sucked most of the life out of me. The shoulder to overheads had to be broken into two sets of 10. Good workout.

Did 17:01 on last workout (lame!).

Subbed 45# plate overhead lunge walks for 30 yards instead of sled pull (no sled). Didn't have 108# KB so I used 110# weighted bar (10# heavier than last time).

CFWU-3. Pushups instead of HSPU 3rd. Superman. No Burgener. Row 500m.
16:00
Not bad. Esp in earlier exercises. WB unbroken. Kipping decent on T to B. Good power on SDHP, just too many breaks. Jerks pretty broken. Not a real good 2nd dip as usual. 30 KB swings instead of sled pull. 110 SDHP w/bar instead of KB SDHP.

Subbed 20# DB thrusters, 95# barbell SDHP, and walking forwards with the pulley weight. Took some time changing the weights on BB for jerks. Jerks most time consuming by far.
