Didn't we just do weighted pull-ups?? What happened to constantly varied?
We did weighted chest to bar. and that was over a month ago.
We did 40 WOD's ago not including rest days.
Its been even longer since it has been 3-3-3-3-3.
Be ready for the unknown and the unknowable. #1. Be ready for life. If you get chased by a bear twice then so be it.
That picture would be so much cooler if there was more than 10 lbs on each side of the bar.
Team Again Faster vs Team Rogue when? where? can’t wait to see Mikko throwdown on call outs
Lipson could kick my butt 7 ways from Sunday, but he failed long before 155x3. Poor example of FORM to put up for all to see how to do this WOD
Definitely need to get those arms locked out. Missed that third one on 145 too I think.
So using an alternating grip on these weighted pullup wods are ok? I've always done them with a regular forward grip. I think I'd be able to squeeze a few extra lbs with an alternated grip.
I will say this, camera angles can be tricky. I watched a video during the open where range of motion (ROM) looked to be lacking. I think the movement was Toes-To-Bar. The feet had to come behind the bar at the bottom of the movement. It's an easy thing to judge. In this particular video there was a judge present and given that there were no "no rep" calls, it was quite clear that the camera angle gave a false impression. So, while a lot of those look like Dave isn't getting up quite high enough, it's hard to say from the video evidence.
Damn, I just did 5x5 weighted pull-ups tonight:
80x5-80x5-80x5-80x5-80x5 at 150# BW
Maybe I'll do 5x3 (around 100#?) next week.
Dave man you're a beast, but those pull-ups at the end were not legit... Either you do or you don't!
Malaysia is spelt incorrectly in the caption for the picture!
Awesome picture though and full respect to CrossFit Malaysia for representing CrossFit in South East Asia!!!
Well, isn't there a lot of love out here?...I do agree that some of those PU looked questionable, especially the last two sets...however, it is still an impressive effort and a lot of power output, which to me is the most important...
Say what you want, Dave can still do pullups with you hanging from his shoulders. Nice work dude.
Wednesday was my day off, so thursday I'll do both the PP/Lunge double Tabata and the Weighted PU. This will be a good opportunity to try out my new dip belt.
Wow!
Judging from the guy's face on the picture, it looks like he's OH squatting at least 150lbs, but it looks like it's less than half that...

Maybe it's a very heavy bar...just saying lol
Ah yes, it's so very easy to sit at home, hiding behind your computer, talking smack. So Dave Lipson can pull heavier than you. So some dude from Malaysia got his photo on mainsite and you didn't. Google Teddy Roosevelt, "It's not the critic..."
Good job Dave. Although they weren't ALL full reps it seemed, it's still awesome to do so many pull ups with so much weight. I tried one the other day with my girlfriend who's 125 lbs on my back, and I couldn't get one rep in.
Just wondering, why do pull ups with the switched grip and not symmetric like both palms outwards or both palms inwards?
I thought Crossfit was supposed to be a community of like-minded people? What's with all the negativity? Let's see any of you put 155 lbs on your back for some pull ups, then we'll congratulate you! Jeez.
Wow, it looks like some of you are forgetting what CF is all about, I think it's awesome that CF has reached to many different corners of the earth, and here we are making fun and boasting about the lack of weight on the picture. I dont care if he has a PVC pipe, I think it's admirable. You people are the ones that give CF a bad name. Quality, not quantity. Maybe that's the weight he needs in order to maintain good form, maybe he's a beginner, and if he is, kudos to him. Quit your boasting people and humble up. You sound like Globo gym folk.
So just to be clear, grip does not matter?
#23, that's such an easy thing to say back "lets see you do it". Who cares if someone else can do it, the fact still remains his ROM wasn't the standards that crossfit requires it's as black and white as that.
Lipson is strong as hell I don't think anyone would deny that, but he's also well known for questionable ROM on certain exercises.
No grip does not matter; This is a power 3RM WOD where the standard grip will hinder your max output. Try the alternate grip and I bet you will see your #'s jump a little. Try a pause at the bottom to ensure ROM is on point.
Wow....people in this world just never cease to amaze me. First of all, strap on 155 lbs to a 205 lb guy and then do a pullup??? Holy crap...I do not care who you are or who you think you are...but that is IMPRESSIVE. Secondly, ROM may not have been perfect, but what happened to the POSITIVITY among crossfitters? Finally, Dave Lipson...kudos....love to see the power that God created...even if not perfect form.
When the pic was taken, that guy was completing his 14th round of 7 minute metcon. In other words, he's a beast. Just sayin'. :)
Be careful of connecting negativity with questions about range of motion. A question of range of motion is always a valid question to ask, whether correct or not, and should be addressed on its own merit, regardless of the performance capabilities of the athlete in question.
First of all, weights are measured in kgs in Asia regions.
Secondly,I agree with Geoff & thundermonkey on their comments that we shouldn't judge people just by the picture. And the comment box is meant for posting time/results,not the picture. These people are really giving bad name to the CF society. Such a shame.
The guy in the photo is not yelling hard enough.
No point in whining about/arguing form faults like this.
ROM is set prior. (Yes, people like to change the standards eg chest to bar pullups. But even then you made it or you didn't.) Is the workout Lipson did with nearly-there-range going to make him stronger? Was he working hard? Am I impressed? Yes. Yes. Yes.
Could he get stronger, worked hard and impressed me more if got all the way up? Yes, obviously.
Unless you are in a competition the numbers are irrelevant....

To all those people busy hatein' on Dave, not only is he stronger than you, he has a better girlfriend too. HAHA
any suggestions on how to do weighted pull ups if I don't have one of those special belts?
@ number 8..anthony..since when is the mainsite supposed to only showcase games athletes? are you kidding me? that comment was snide and very rude, WHY DONT YOU MAKE IT TO THE REGIONALS BEFORE YOU EVEN OPEN YOUR MOUTH. DAVE, Eff the haters, youre a strong dude, just cause you missed the games you dont deserve to have a video posted on the mainsite bro! pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee, lets see your work capacity anthony. post some vids and you can shut my mouth. need to email me hate mail, just respond back, but more importantly, videos please. all the crossfitters who don't hate, lets keep on truckin' and leave these whinies in the dust to talk about everybody else.
For those without a belt, I just use the strap part from a ratchet strap. You just have to wrap it around your waist a couple times, put the hook through the weights and then attach it to the belt. Ratchet straps are around $10 at Lowes.
If Dave can pull mid-150# for reps, I suspect he's not far off the world record for 1RM...it's about 200# (depending on whether you measure total bw plus weight or just "weight added")

Hats off to Dave AND the guy in the picture!! Inspiring!!
Not that he's weak, but Dave didn't get his chin over the bar on many of those reps. Seems like crossfit should reiterate their standard for pull-ups. Is it forehead to bar (lol), chin over bar, or chest to bar?

It takes admirable humbleness to, amid all the ruthless criticism, go back to the video and admit fault and noting areas of potential improvment publicly (comment #9). His balance of the beast/man dichotomy is inspiring.

I use a 2" cotton karate belt, tie it around my waist with a square knot leaving a few inches of slack. Push a loop through olympic plates of the desired total weight, use a tennis ball as a stopper. Works like a charm. Easy to undo and dump the weights when finished.

This was my first time ever trying weighted pull ups, so I didn't quite know where to start in terms of weight, caution caused me to go slowly up in weight.
warmup: 20 foot rope climb with 14# weighted vest (first time with weighted vest)
weighted pull ups:
reps: 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 2
weight: 14-15-17-18-20-21-23-24-26-27-29-30-32-32-32-32-32# (max'ed out vest at 32#)
never failed, but I like round numbers, so stopped at 50 pull ups. hands about destroyed.
about one minute rest between each set, no feet touch between reps, fully extended arms between each rep, full chin over bar each rep, regular grip, some kipping towards the end
I did far better than I expected. I might need a new vest.
60-65-70-75-70 75 was a bit sketch so went back to 70
metcon: 10 min amrap
2 HSPU
3 weighted chin 45#
9 rounds... broke up the chins before i had to break up the HSPUs, ended up kipping #2 on rounds 8 and 9
I am M/25/205# and an avid CrossFit athlete from Sacramento, CA. On September 12, 2011, I will depart on a 22,000-mile bicycle tour to raise awareness for childhood obesity! My goal is to reach over 500,000 youth and inspire them to get up, get out and actively pursue their dreams! I completed my first tour of cycling 11,000-miles this past April by myself, with only $36 dollars to leave with, a tent and a sleeping bag. But I was confident that my passion would give me the strength to overcome any obstacle in my way.
I was drawn to CrossFit because of the close brotherhood/sisterhood built between its athletes through shared struggle and triumph, and knowing you could count on the person next to you to push or carry you beyond your perceived limits. Therefore, before my tour departure, I started contacting every box along my route to propose a partnership upon my arrival into their city, inspire their youth to become active, and promote CrossFit, and their box, as the elite fitness program. I was left with one response, one box willing to assist me on my route from Sacramento, CA to Tucson, AZ, over 1,000 miles of CrossFit boxes.
I gave up. Not only did I give up reaching out to boxes along my route, I gave up on CrossFit, and the idea that a kinship existed between its athletes and affiliates. My heart, dreams and every goal I set to strive for in the CrossFit world were crushed. Again, I find myself standing alone in face of a nationwide bicycle tour, and I will push forward and succeed against all odds. And it appears CrossFit will be left behind.
I agree #27. Crossfit is going to mainstream and pulling people with the wrong mindset. Crossfit is about supporting each other and not making fun of someone for low weight or imperfect form.

mas- tremendous job. I expected big numbers out of you, and you didn't disappoint!
I had an old Forest Service backpack filled with about 70lbs of sand that I used for these kind of workouts over many years. It's lost wieght slowly as time went by, but today the bag split open and dumped some sand.
Instead of wearing the backpack straps, I had to tie it up in garbage bags and bungees, then hang it around my waist with a chain.
I estimate the wieght at about 50lbs. I did 3-3-3-3-3 with that on a ledge instead of a bar. Gnarly.

Outstanding Job Dave.
I read an article by Jim Wendler of 5/3/1 fame. He was talking about elite strength and indicated being able to do 10 Pull-Ups/Chin-Ups @ 100 Lbs is considered elite. It's nice to know CF has athletes like Dave Lipson and Dave Castro who may be right on the verge of truely elite strength.
That fits with CF in Forging Elite Fitness.

I worked out last late afternoon, then early this morning for this WOD. It's nice to switch things up and get a little WOD in the mornings as well... gets the body guessing and hopefully keeping it in more of a ready state all the time. I have a hard time with weighted movements in the early morning, but I just have to warm up even more...
Funny as I was finishing my warm up a guy came over to me and said wow that's some intense workout.. I explained that you have to warm up the body before really getting into it, then he said wait that wasn't your workout, just your warm up... I thought that was funny.
As I get older my warm ups are longer to really get a sweat going and get really loose. I do NOT want to get hurt/ injured, or limit my movements and ROM. Warm up and end of workout stretching are KEY in my opinion.
Worked up to 40 pounds. Could do more.

There is owning the rep/weight and there is hoping for the best. Not sure those pull ups were legit.
Hmmm... just watched the lipson video. Ummm, I counted maybe one real pull up and technically NONE. What is up with the gloves and the switched grip. A pull up is both hands in the pronated position. And his chin may have cleared the bar on the first rep of the first set and that is all... each rep got progressively lower. He needs to cut the weight to sub 100lbs to do this properly.
