Monday 110815

With a continuously running clock, do one pull-up and one handstand push-up the first minute, two pull-ups and two handstand push-ups the second minute, three pull-ups and three handstand push-ups the third minute... continuing as long as you are able. When you cannot complete the required number of reps for either exercise, continue only with the other as long as you are able.

Use as many sets in any order each minute as needed.

Post number of minutes successfully completed for each exercise to comments. Their sum is your score.
Laurie Galassi 32 (15 HSPU + 17 Pull-up), Jesse Bazarnick 31 (12 HSPU + 19 Pull-up).

Compare to 100319.

It's 3 am in Baghdad right now and I am up for some reason thinking, "I can't wait for this one, I'm still sore from the ring pushups the other day!" Get some.

Gord interview played for me straight away...WOD will be interesting...I too am still sore from PUs yesterday - I did mine on two #4 soccer balls, since I don't have rings (yet)...started w/ feet raised, but then had to put them on the ground, still had to break up ALL 8 sets!

Awesome, motivating, eye-opening, educational, and most importantly FUN!

Big THANK YOU to Chuck and your team of excellent instructors for all you do.

Todd, Kurtis, Abbie, Nadia, Tommy, Jessie-thanks for a great Level 1 Cert weekend. I walk away with sore legs and a deeper appreciation of why I hate Fran. 30 at a time hitting Fran or FGB, pretty sick! Hearing different trainers' perspectives on cues and fixes for working with athletes is going to make me a better athlete and better advocate for CrossFit. I really can't wait to turn loose the beast on my kids at school!

Did Rich just have eye surgery? Thats the only legit reason to wear sunglasses indoors.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Matt at August 14, 2011 8:27 PM

So you do one pullup/HSPU every minute, on the minute? So you shouldn't worry if your pullups and HSPU are off? Ia it fine to do on minute 4, 4 pushups and 3 HSPU and on minute 5, 5 HSPU and 4 pullups? The goal is just to count all reps and add?

Comment #31 - Posted by: Joe at August 14, 2011 10:57 PM

10 rounds HSPUs and 11 rounds PUs for score of 21.

Don't add total reps, just completed rounds of each.

Comment #32 - Posted by: Jason at August 14, 2011 11:35 PM

Hm I don't get it right: Do I have to complete them in a single set or how can I say which exercise to drop? Did the same thing only with chin ups two days ago and could barely manage the 7 within the whole minute, that would be a short workout for me today, even with an elevated head for the HSPU.

Comment #33 - Posted by: Chris E at August 15, 2011 12:23 AM

I’m having some trouble with my HSPU. I have been working on it off and on for a few months but still can’t seem to get them right. I was assuming it would just take a while until I can build the muscle, but now I’m starting to get impatient. Does anyone have any tips?

Comment #40 - Posted by: Evan at August 15, 2011 4:06 AM

So for minute 8 is that 8 pullups in a minute or just 8 pullups? Also for each set (pullups/HSPU) is it you wait a minute to do the next round. Or is it just one pullup/HSPU wait no time and go into round 2?

@Frank (#40): In minute 8 you have to do 8 pull ups AND 8 handstand pushups before the minute is over. At least that's how I understand it. Once minute 9 starts you have to do 9 before that minute is over etc..

I did neutral pull ups and elevated my head for 8cm for the handstand pushups, starting from a headstand position (I'm still very bad at them).

I don't know if I did right. What I did was, first one pullup then 1 Military Press @ 85ibs. Then I rested a minute and did 2 PU, 2 MP, all the way up. I ended up with 13 reps MP/11 reps PU Total: 24 On my 11th PU the last ones weren't full ones, but partial ones, I tried a few times on each. Also for my 13th MP I did paused on some for 5-8 second due to fatigue.

We received nothing but the utmost in professionalism and educational technique. I would recommend this certification to all of those who have yet to do so, and particularly CrossFit Charlotte for their depth of knowledge and experienced trainers. 16 pull ups + 4 HSPU's = 20
That was a shock, to find myself in a pile driver on round five with the clock ticking. It's one thing, I suppose to have HSPU strength (I nailed 10 in that chipper last week and didn't look back) but quite another to have the capacity to deliver them in a hurry when the system is already running at high RPM's.

30 (12 HSPU + 18 Pull-up) -- PR

HSPUs went really well today - got through 12 + 7 more in the 13th minute - further than I had expected. Pull-ups went pretty well, but started getting ugly in the teens. By 16, I was really struggling, and had some pre-tears. So after getting through 18, I just did singles until the end, got through 16 of them before time expired in the 19th minute.

Hopefully I'll make it back there one day to play with all the grownup toys (atlas stones, logs, chains, etc) you have implemented at your box. To the rest of the coaches; Todd, Tommy, Abby, Nadia, and Jesse, you guys were all amazing to listen to and learn from. What a pleasure. Thanks again.

New PR at 29 by 4. Total reps: 167 pull-ups (17 min. + 14 reps); 78 HSPU (12 min.). Second time doing this WOD. The first time was off the heals of doing "Murph." got the last pull-up at the "buzzer;" might've gotten in more rounds if I'd remembered the option of alternating between the exercises when I had to break up sets; if it weren't for the skin tear on my hand, I'd almost want to have another go at it; an alternative modification for next time might be to do band-assist HSPU, but add in 10 sec for getting into and out of the bands each round.

Am starting to push rows harder. Unbelievable to me how much more a 1:42 500m hurts, all over, vs. a 1:55; same for 3:32.9 1000m row vs. my usual 3:45-4 min pace. With 200m to go on yesterday's 1000m, the thought flashed "This could be the hardest I've ever worked the whole body."

Has taken 5+ months of CF and rowing at least once a week to build enough strength / stamina / rowing skill to set a relatively hard pace and stick to it.

M/ 37/ 134 lbs/ 5'-6"
As Rx: (27) 9 rounds of HSPU + 18 Rounds of pullups (only did 12 in my round of 19)

I would normaly do a lot more HSPUs but my shoulders and triceps were really sore still from the "Gator" WOD I did 2 days ago (8 rnds of 185 FS + 26 ring pushups)
Still I'm o.k. with the total results since I normally get about 18 rounds with the pullup ladder so to get about the same but also do HSPUs - not too bad.
I think that this is a WOD where you have to really push to get onto the next movement very quickly.. especially at about 10 rounds. I am not sure about trying to incorporate the kipping leg movement into the HSPUs. I don't want the kip to start being a crutch... on this type of a WOD it is o.k. since it's about volume and speed, but it could start to get my body to be lazy not so tight in the vertical plane.. and that's not a good thing in my opinion. I think that if you can do a tight vertical HSPU you should do that and if you're working up to that, then the leg drive could be a good tool to help assist to gain the required strength. I know that if I did use my legs to kick up more then obviously you'd get more reps but not sure the reps are worth it.

Misread this WOD and did not do correctly. It will be done the right way next time though:

Made it to round 9 on the HSPUs and round 10 on the pull-ups This is where I messed up and stopped. This is where I could have (and should have) continued to go with the PUs until I could not complete them within the allotted minute.

19 is my score

Did the easier pull-ups first to be able to spent the remaining time to break up the HSPUs into digestible pieces. Didn't last very long on the latter.
