No rope = 225 rope pull-ups... AWWWW YEAH!
Any word on Mikko Salo and Rob Orlando? Do they still get to compete or are they officially done?
I miss the commentators from last year, it is hard to follow the action this year. Wishing, or maybe I missed them, they would tell you the standards more. I miss the personal touch the commentating brought to the games!
What does DNS mean? (mikko salo got that)
No sound on the Jumbotron feed right now....super.
ESPN3 isn't avail in Canada.
Any suggestions/fixes?
DNS = Did Not Start... I'm just hoping he still gets to compete in the rest of the games... I think he was being tended to by the medical staff after he finished event one.
I wish Mikko the best, know how much he wanted to compete. What happens with a blown ear drum?
Same for Rob, very tough break. I am surprised how well most competitors did swim.
The softball throw was silly. At least twenty points were available to those with missed reps if they only dropped the ball over the line. Not good strategy. I especially think this could make a huge difference in Josh Bridges standings.
Ben Smith looks like he is in a very good position. He is above average on most traditional Crossfit WODs and seems to handle the curveballs well enough .
Does anyone have suggestions with towel pull ups? How many should be completed with 5 accents?
Goooo Annie! So cool to see one of the original girls doing her thing
I was cheering at my computer when I saw that little power house come out of the water. I knew she would do great on the pull-ups with her little froggy kip and crank through the air squats.
Go, Girl!.
Note to judges: when measuring distance you should have the dummy end at the final mark so that the measurement can be checked for square to the throwing line (shortest distance read, swing an arc). Surprised they did not use a theodolite to measure as a lack of experience with measuring tape (tension, level, square) could result in poor precision and accuracy. A modern EDM theodolite would be quick and very accurate.
Jumbotron feed video is running smooth, but has no sound. Come on guys, get it together.
great idea making the games open to anyone in the world to compete; lousy decision on the broadcast availability. Massive disappointment
Totally agree with Dean on inability for anyone overseas to watch the games. Very disappointing indeed!
im in sweden and i had some major problems with the feed during the first event, then i downloaded google chrome and everything has been perfect ever since! watching the goddesses right now and this event is just pure awesomeness, the ladies are def bringin it this year!!
Is anyone getting "Live Stream (Satelite)"?
Is it down for all or just a few?
I am just getting "Live Stream (Jumbotron)" and I am missing the commentary and footage...
Anyone from HQ can update on status?
I'm in east coast Canada, I'm watching watching the Rope climb/Clean and Jerk WOD live and the feed runs smooth, sound is ok, but I totally don't understand why they don't have commentating. It makes it hard to follow the action on the ground.
One point about the standards. I thought that this was a Clean & Jerk movement that was prescribed. So far, all I'm seeing is a Power Clean & Push Press. If that is what the judges are looking for for the standards, then why don't they call it Ground-to-overhead instead? I know when I do this one tomorrow, I will do it 'as prescribed', meaning full squat clean & Jerk. How many towel pullups to sub for a 15ft rope climb? 15?...
Watching the games last year was what got me fired up to start crossfitting. Now I can't watch the stream tonight because I have qwest internet and they don't do ESPN3.com? Please tell me I am making some kind of mistake?
Anyone know what Michelle Kinney's distance was for softball throw?
Yea, they dropped the ball on the streaming pretty bad. I hope its not some sort of agreement with Reebok/ESPN where they are in charge of broadcasting and they got rid of last year's team. Who ever did it last year did an amazing job, production value was very high. This year's broadcasting is a disaster.
Comment 18, Mark, so obviously the ladies in the pic are more muscular than you are.
In addition, they cut out anyone who is out of US by letting ESPN do the high quality broadcast.
Excellent work on the espn 3 coverage! thanks Guys!
Mikko's ear drum burst after diving in the water…sometimes this happens from flying and swimming too close together. Very unfortunate. Rob Orlando could no longer swim and had to grab onto a lifeguard's paddleboard and be helped back to shore. Unfortunately they are now disqualified. They can compete if they want to but their scores won't count. 2 amazing athletes. I think the ocean swim was not a good idea. Watching everyone on the beach was amazing but too many people who have no experience ocean swimming and without the massive lifeguard presence, bad bad things would have happened.
You can watch the rebroadcast on ESPN3 online at 9pm EST/6 pm PST Fri and Sat. It's not live, but you get to see the events, hear some great broadcasting, hear some goofy broadcasting, hear an attempt at a National Anthem, and otherwise get a great feel for the games. It's a little like watching local cable broadcasts, but the athletes and events are awesome.
Annie crushed it..6:54 that is amazing
Post 20 today's WOD is power clean and jerks. Unlike Thursdays work out that said squat clean and jerk. Prescribed workout is power cleans.
Post 20,
If crossfit wanted it to be squat clean and jerk they would specify it; like Thursday's workout was squat clean and jerk 12-9-6 and muscle-ups. Today’s workout is just power clean and jerk.
The ocean swim was a great idea. Swimming after flying did not cause Miko's ear drum to rupture, if that is in fact what occurred! I’m an X-Navy Diver, and after flying to various parts of the world, I never had a problem getting in the water, even if the eustachian tubes are blocked, surface swimming will not rupture it. If his tubes were blocked, and he had a large wave overhead, then maybe, but doubtful!
I've got ESPN3.com piped into my 46" flat screen: Love it!
Real-time scoring is great, too.
Broadcast teams are fun to listen to.
Annie Sakamoto?! 6th place?! Yes! That's kicking it old school! No matter what happens the rest of the Games, my weekend is made. Kill it sister!
I get 3 seconds of jumbotron and then it cuts out. What a massive dissapointment. Fire the IT team!
Klever had an outside lane advantage and didn't have the barebells impede her trans. from rope to lifts. I think it would only be fair to award Julie 2nd (difference of 0.3 sec). I doubt it will occur. Five point swing for both athletes may prove to be a big factor.
Great to see Annie! Go girl!
Are there any download links? All i see are flash player streams.... I want to DL and watch on my TV through xbox not stream it on my laptop....
Sad, that you cant see anything on satilite view, without commmentary it is not the same. major disappointment.
FYI - from the CF FAQ page: "Squat clean aka Full Clean aka Clean = start from the floor, catch in a full squat"
Squat cleans = cleans
It must specify "Power Clean" for it to be a power clean - "Clean" is catch in a full squat
#41 Tony. If that is indeed what it says it's never interpreted that way. Squat clean for forced squat clean, power clean for forced power clean, clean for any type of clean. That's how it has been interpreted for years.
"Rich's Revenge"
Great Job Rich!
I normally try not to complain and vent my frustrations because I understand how difficult an event like this can be and I understand that things will get overlooked and mistakes will be made... but after years of providing download links along with streaming video why would you change that now? I just can't fathom the need to to alter your method of distribution to cover less platforms. I don't have espn3, not many people do as far as I can tell, and my laptop screen is junk so streaming it(choppy) on that for friends and family is just embarrassing. Thanks for the effort.. But that's all you are getting out of me.
Goodnight.
Fun, now to find a rope, had one at the parents house when I wrestled in high school n college, shouldn't have made dad take it down cause it looked silly....lol!
Feed was bad early in the day, but the afternoon it was great.
Can't wait for tomorrow.
#41 Tony,
Thank you for pointing that out, I knew I wasn't crazy when I read cleans not power cleans. So therefore, I shall do squat cleans when I do this WOD saturday...
I think the swim was a great idea, after all, as a Crossfit athlete, you're supposed to be decent at everything. If you suck at swimming, swim more in your training, if you suck at rope climibing, well...you get the point. So unfortunately for Orlando, well sorry if you can't swim, maybe you shoulda done more laps buddy...as for Mikko, I believe he was kicked in the head during the swim, which is what ruptured his eardrum, very unfortunate incident...
what I find is total crap is to see Ben Smith in 1st place after seeing his performance in the last heat of event 3. He was clearly picking up the barbell off the bounce for his so called cleans and he got to finish ahead of a beast like Spealler...total crap!
And last but not least, if we are witnessing the fittest ppl on earth competing, I wonder why they are "walking" from the rope to the barbell. Wasn't the WOD "for time"? just sayin...
I got sooo into last year's streaming and told a bunch of friends to check it out hoping they would join our "box." What a disappointment. How could everything get better with sponsorship but the web presence to the world-wide community go so bad? I was so fired up for this year and even meeting some buds to watch. We are calling that off now. Somebody failed big time on this one. Very bummed.
Harry & Tony --
Try the WOD however you would like--nobody cares about your pursuit of scaled perfection you will no doubt be performing tomorrow. You would still get left in dust by anybody you watched do this WOD tonight. Quit b*tchin
Tony. If they sprinted over to the Barbell they would then have to stand there and rest before being able to explode in the lift of the bar. Its called Pacing, and these guys know how to do it, If they sprinted they would be too gassed to lift. Maybe it would make them appear to be working harder but my guess is that sprinting to the bar would in the end make them take longer.
Work smart, not hard (the hard part doesn't really apply in this situation)
Take a look at Pat Barbers performance in that event. He kept the same pace from start to finish. These guys know their bodies and what they are capable of.
Anyone else notice some atrocious L-sit form that was being judged as legit? Knees bent and/or knees frogged out? C'mon, straight legs as the standard should be enforced.
Travis,
In my pursuit of "scaled perfection" as you call it, I believe that if a WOD is prescribed in a certain manner, it should be performed in that manner. Wether you're a firebreather or just a crossfit follower, all should perform the movements as prescribed. I'm 45 yrs old and yes, I will be scaling this WOD, and yes I will forever be in the dust of all those athletes I saw perform, and you know what, I'm ok with that. I do CF so I keep in shape for my job, not to go compete in the games.
And #46 TheBearNZ, pacing, really?...dude, it's only like 10m to the furthest barbell!...not saying they should sprint over there, but I know I will be jogging between towel PU and barbell tomorrow...
What should i do since i dont have a rope to climb?
The Games coverage this year is TERRIBLE!!!
Espn3.com coverage was good - huge improvement over the raw streams. Entertaining too - loved the female announcer constantly cracking up at the Speedo worn by one guy. Remember folks, it is streamed online at espn3.com, not on television.
Harry,
how about you jog and let the fittest guys in the world walk and let's see who is quickest. If it's you, maybe you should go for next year's Masters and start up a coaching clinic for the top athletes.
my money's on them....because the most important thing about this WOD isn't the speed between the transitions it is not to fail on the lift and to do the rope climb continuously. that little walk gets the heart rate down and allows the athletes to attack the rope and bar every time.
agree with all the comments above about the feed. really disappointing not to hear commentary.
also, my heart goes out to Mikko. that dude has been training all year for this one weekend, was in the best shape of his life and gets injured by a stray kick at the beginning of the first event.
At his age, he's running out of years to win again.
No rope and today is my 35th birthday so the Marines of Aco 1/9 FWD deployed Afghan came up with a good sub!
The 35'er (all my fav!)
3500m bike
35 wall ball 15lbs (all we got)
35 double unders
35 walking lunges 35 lb plate over head
35 box junp 24 inches
35 standing straight bar curl 65 lbs
35 kettle bell swing 2 pood (no choice on one we have)
35 standing push press 65 lb
35 Ab twist 15lb ball
and ofcourse
35 burpees!!!!!
350
Harry,
Good luck mate if you think you can complete this WOD with no rest and sprinting between barbell and rope. In fact if you are so awesome as to be judging these mens performaces maybe you should be at the games showing Rich and alike how this WOD should be done
Not a good day for me.
Almost another workout because of my substitutions: 10 jumping towel pull ups for each ascend (read that in the message board from someone doing both, the real rope climbs and the towel sub ) and 110lbs hang clean and press.
My shoulders felt awkward because of bench presses two days ago (wrong technique I guess) and I'm starting to get a cold, so I wasn't in my best shape. I decided to play it safe so I don't injure myself from the cleans (don't have any practice with that) in my small room. That means I didn't try to do it as fast as possible but waited until I felt 100% secure I could do another rep instead.
Time was 49:55 in the end, I was just happy I finished it. Maybe I'll get more confident with the cleans so I can aim for better times some other time, this is kind of discouraging.
For those wishing to watch the ESPN 3 feed but are having trouble because they are not with the proper internet service provider, try googling 'how to watch espn3' ;)

watched the ESPN3.com coverage and loved it. Heather is a riot! Today ill skip the streaming during the day and just catch the nights broadcast on ESPN3 to get caught up and see some live action too. If you were watching the event last night the announcers let it known many times that the rope climb, clean and jerk event was actually ground to overhead. ESPN3 is not a tv channel, its a website.

After watching event 1 I think that our collective crossfit focus has shifted too much towards strength and neglected aerobic and endurance training. Almost all of the top performers that we have enjoyed watching over the last few years have added significant muscle mass since 2009, but I think event 1 showed that there is a price to be paid for that extra size. The athletes this year are unbelievably strong, and their work capacity is off the chart, but can we honestly call ourselves the fittest on earth when a one mile run reduces us to walking? Or the fastest athlete took almost 10 minutes to cover the distance? Would an outsider watching event 1 have agreed that these are the fittest on the planet? I have nothing but respect for these athletes, and I'm really enjoying the games, but just curious if anyone else thinks that our programming has overemphasized strength training to the neglect of aerobic conditioning.
the espn3 coverage is USA only right?
Rob - a couple of things.
1. crossfit model is that anaerobic training is superior to aerobic training. As anaerobic training also increases aerobic capacity.
2. I disagree with you tremendously. With regard to the swim you are totally discounting how the swim affects the athlete, how the pull ups, air squats, and push ups affected the athletes.
3. Have you looked at their statistics on the stats page of games.crossfit.com? They all run sub 20 min 5k's? The object of crossfit is to be fit it is not to be ultra endured. Being able to deadlift 500, do 30 muscle ups in 5 min, and run a 5k under 20 min is fit. Being able to complete an iron man is not necessarily fit. That is the crossfit motto.
p.s. - most of the athletes are not massive. Only about 5 are over 200 lbs. Most are medium sized and lean. Look at the top guys like froning and ben smith, zach forrest etc. Out of the first 13 guys only one over 200 lbs is khalipa, and i think he has proved his fitness prior to these games.
#47 Yeah I noticed some pretty poor looking L-sits and would have though there would have been higher standards or stricter judging.
One that really caught my eye was Clever, poor form and when she straightened her legs she failed.
ESPN3 unavailable due to my Internet provider. CRAP! Will it be available to be viewed any other way in the future?

Good job Ben Smith for your 1st place after day 1!
Hope to see you on the podium this year:)
I'd rather watch the feeds with no sound and choppy than read another post of you guys whining about it.
If you didn't go to the games, you should expect risks, get over it. Train harder, earn a spot your selves, or save up some cash and head to LA next year and watch it live.
For a bunch of "Fit" people who are supposed to be able to handle anything you sure to freak out when technology fails you. I'd hate to see your faces if you were supposed to do Fran and then your coach said "no were gonna go Murph" right before you started. Would you all quit and throw a temper tantrum like a 3 year old child? Adapt and overcome. If the feed doesn't work go enjoy the great outdoors, hit a wod, play with your kids, whatever and check the site later...they will archive a good amount of footage and you can watch it later, assuming you have a journal subscription.
Its really sad to hear how our generation is so reliant on technology. We have taken our fitness and our diets back to our evolutionary roots...I wish we could go back in other ways as well.
sorry gotta feed em
@Rob
That competitor ran that mile after doing a 210m swim, the first mile, and 50 Pullups 100 Pushups 200 Squats. So, was it slower? Heck yes! (Oh yeah the soft sand thing too!) You also have to remember that we can't skew it towards endurance either. Are marathoners or regular 5K runners the fittest? No, because they can't lift heavy stuff. Are people that powerlift the fittest? No, because they can't run or jump. Pardon my stereotyping for those limited few in the above categories that can:) My point is, you have to be the best overall to be the fittest human. Do I think as the competition goes more worldwide that we will have some beasts coming on the horizon that can 5min mile and snatch 300? Sure. I won't answer back if you want to argue, just food for thought. Hit the WOD hard!
Annie Sakamoto - you go girl. Concur with other comments re. Annie. Great to see her.
Annie Sakamoto! I love you. You look absolutely perfect. ROCK IT girlfriend.
Go Ben Smith!!!
CF - fix the live feed omg
#60 Rob,
Efficient running on sand is shorter strides than strides on a track. I doubt anyone could run a 6 minute mile on soft sand.
I'm in New York and have Optimum Online which apparently makes me ineligible to watch the ESPN3 Broadcasting. And the live streaming on the games website it TERRIBLE. Did ESPN make a deal with crossfit only if they could be the only ones with actual broadcasters and quality cameras? As crossfit has done in the past, I hope they listen to the people and next year we see some changes in terms of broadcast availability. After all, what is the point of advertising and high end production deals if no one can watch it?
What happened to the live feed and the games website? Did it just crash? The homepage won't even load.

post 73 Nick...yeah, well thought out...some of us are overseas, in afghanistan for instance...sure i wouldve liked to attend in person, but hey, not quite possible...get the streaming sorted!!!!!!!
@88 - Decathalon gold medalist, best ATHLETE in the world. For those having issues with the stream, it might be your browser. I was trying to use Internet Explorer with no luck, but when I switched to Firefox, no problems. GO FRONING!!
I'm not going to say the streaming was amazing or terrible but espn3 was certainly better and more entertaining, but y'all have to remember, espn is an international company that is used to providing streaming to millions of people at the same time for at least a few years, this is the first time crossfit has done an "open" style game and the first time you open anything up to the ENTIRE WORLD, there's going to be problems, I think it's amazing that they've done it this well so far, also if any of y'all know how to make streaming better then tell HQ how to do it, don't just complain, I know I don't so I'm not going to complain about anything, just my two cents. Now on to the WOD, then watching more games!!
Finally decided to buy the NB Minimus shoes and man are they AWESOME! Couldn't be any happier!

USMC0369; It was Dan vs. Dave; and yes it was 1992. But the world champion decathlete is commonly referred to as the World's Greatest Athlete; not fittest. Ironically, Reebok ran the Dan vs. Dave ad campaign.
What are the specs on the "L" sit event? I can't find them. All the girls I saw had legs locked out over the plates, and were in a classic "L". Klever had her knees bent at almost 90 degrees, and only dropped out after she extended her legs. Was that legit?
#88
i believe the winner of the decathalon is usually considered the world's best athlete, not necessarily the fittest.
Used the women's weights, starting at 115 lbs, but stopped at 145; hurt my low back. Would have been around 15 mins.
I'm sad not to be at the games this year, but it is outrageously wonderful to see Annie S., one of my old trainers, giving Annie T. (and Kristan) a run for her money. It is also super inspirational to see all the Masters kicking caboose on these killer wods. Way to go Jim D!

With towel pull-ups: 36:02 (DNF).
C/D: skipped.
Sub'd 15 towel pull-ups for each rope climb. There's nothing quite like 225 towel pull-ups to remind me of how nice it would be to have a climbing rope! I was unable to complete the last C&J at 225#. So I had to stop the clock w/o finishing. I think those towel pull-ups just wore-out my ability to clean.
Enjoying watching the Games coverage. Thrilled to see Annie Sakamoto doing so well!
Thanks for getting the streaming fixed. Good camera work. Good, speedy scoring. Love the programming of day 2.

So I've been hearing pretty good things about Biotest workout supplements from friends, I was just curious if any fellow crossfitters have used them, and what your opions are?
Still no satellite link for me in UK. Jumbotron is working, which is certainly better than nothing, but the proportions are all wrong— everything is stretched widthways—and the res is lower than last year; there's no commentary either. Is this Reebok's doing?
What would have been brilliant would have been a high quality downloadable version of the event available a few hours after the actual live event. It would still have the feel of live for those of us who can't get a good live feed. Oh well.
Thoughly enjoying watches the games!! I only wish the audio was a good as the video. What's up?

19:40. Had to get a little creative with subs due to equipment/time constraints. Subbed 8 pullups per rope climb, used 145 155 165 175 185 on C&J weights, which worked out well, struggled with the last few jerks. Lost a little time between rounds adding weights to bar.

Limited time and equipment today. Today is the one year anniversary of the death of our LT. "Vinny" Costello. Vinny died here at the firehouse while on duty. He was a good leader and a great friend. He will be truly missed. So today, our house cooked Vinny's favorite meal for the shift. Mac and Cheese with spinach and keilbasa. RIP old friend.

I wanted to do this one as soon as I saw the Games competitors being briefed on it. It was awesome! Rope climbs got hard in the round of 4 when my grip went, and I had to really focus on the wrap. I did C&Js power clean and push jerk thru 185, then split clean and split jerk at 205, and squat clean and split jerk at 225. While I didn't finish under the Games 12-minute cap, I did change out all my own weights on the bar, so I'm pleased with the time.

Pretty disapp, esp last 2 rounds of cleans. Numerous failed attempts at 205 before dropping to 195. Then missed jerk on 1st. Got it on 2nd. Then 205 last round. Got clean, not jerk. Felt like I did little better job of getting vertical on last couple.
Tried 215 after WOD. Couldn't get it.
Rope climbs not too bad. Grip a little tough so that contributed to slow pace. Really focus on getting good reach on pull.
