hahaha...softball throw as a games event?

I guess shouldnt laugh, because I remember Athletic Day (A-Day) being really fun in elementary school.

Comment #1 - Posted by: BurgundyActual at July 28, 2011 5:25 PM

I guess I just don't understand why classical music is put up onto the main site. I don't mind it, I'm just curious, that's all.

Comment #2 - Posted by: Aaron(19 years old) at July 28, 2011 5:38 PM

What we couldnt get a shot put or discus throw? This makes us look like a middle school field day!

I like the "field day" aspect of the Games. Nobody complains about free-throw shooters or field goal kickers. Quit taking it so damn seriously.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Mike A. at July 28, 2011 6:32 PM

Anyone know if the live feed on games site is over???

Comment #7 - Posted by: jmart at July 28, 2011 6:44 PM

Def liking the Open WOD's so far. Im guessing there are some questioning the swim and especially the softball throw. In my opinion, whats so impressive with a 200 LB Snatch if you cant throw a softball 60 ft?

The live feed wasn't good, it skipped and looped all over the place, hopefully they fix this by morning!

Comment #12 - Posted by: Karl at July 28, 2011 7:27 PM

will the show thing be archived and/or available to watch somewhere?

Comment #13 - Posted by: eric at July 28, 2011 7:35 PM

For Aaron, since Coach Glassman likes to site virtuosity as "doing the common uncommonly well," and it seems to me that the classical music, prose and poetry are examples of that virtuosity in arenas other than athletic.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Sean at July 28, 2011 7:45 PM

That looks like hip extension in a core to extremity movement with a little bit of accuracy, coordination, and balance mixed in. What a great way to test fitness!

Comment #15 - Posted by: Brett at July 28, 2011 8:20 PM

Work on his calves Karl? Ha! What about those puny girlish forearms. Dang...he's such a pipsqueak.

I brought up the idea of testing an actual athletic skill in the games a couple years ago and got run off this board. Would still like to see one-on-one hoops, passing patterns, tennis match, etc... (See Pros vs. Joes for ideas and I'm here if you need anymore suggestions.) Because, are these people really athletes?

Comment #20 - Posted by: Dan at July 29, 2011 2:51 AM

@#21 Throwing is a fundamental athletic skill. Throwing a softball for distance is extremely difficult. Judging by Rob's grip on the ball he's going to find out just how true that second statement is.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Bob at July 29, 2011 3:26 AM

Nice, a softball throw, because using the olympic standard shot put isn't elite enough.

Comment #22 - Posted by: Joe at July 29, 2011 3:59 AM

#22, come on Bob. You really don't believe that throwing a softball is an athletic skill do you? The last thing I think about when I look at the crossfit athletes is...."wow, I wonder if I gave him a softball, how far could he throw it?"

I know plenty of weekend softball church league players that can throw a softball a mile, and I would never confuse them with an athlete.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Lou at July 29, 2011 4:11 AM

@#24 Yes. Throwing is a skill whether you choose to believe it or not. Have you ever seen a person who claims to be an athlete not have the ability to throw? I have, and it's sad. Very, very sad.

Comment #24 - Posted by: Bob at July 29, 2011 4:19 AM

Terrible idea on the softball throw. Unless you've been throwing consistently for several weeks leading up, there is a really strong possibility you could hurt your shoulder. Anyone who has ever played baseball or softball knows what I'm saying. Years of hard work preparing for the games only to throw it away, pun intended, in one throw.

Comment #26 - Posted by: mom to five at July 29, 2011 5:25 AM

@comment 11 - actually, it's horrible form. tension in his back, he's gripping it like he's picking up a grapefruit at the supermarket, stride is completely too wide for him to be making a proper crow-hop, and his front foot isn't open wide enough to clear his hips. but i digress.

that being said, 'how far' one can throw a softball is a terrible idea. while i agree that throwing is an inherently athletic movement, it shouldn't be brought out at the games. it takes quite a while to develop and condition the rotator cuff to handle the stresses of throwing, which is a completely unnatural motion.

Comment #27 - Posted by: b at July 29, 2011 5:55 AM

Awesome, Stephen Crane is one of my favorite poets-

I saw a man pursuing the horizon;
Round and round he sped.
I was disturbed at this;
I accosted the man.
"It is futile," I said,
"You can never -"

"You lie," he cried,
And ran on.

lol @ Lou comments. I have to agree. Although it IS a skill, I don't believe it's something one would list on their resume' if they were deemed 'fittest on earth'. "I took 1st in the softball throw at least". lol That being said, I have to favor Graham or Rich in this event. :)

What is the deal with ESPN3? When do they start broadcasting? Do they charge $$? Comcast connection sucks and keeps stopping CF site stream...are others having same prob?

Comment #45 - Posted by: CJ at July 29, 2011 7:48 AM

Looks like Spealler got 2nd (no big surprise with the selected workout). Who was the guy that got first?

Comment #46 - Posted by: Bitz at July 29, 2011 8:07 AM

The stream pauses every 5 seconds. Not sure if its my connection or if anyone else having the same problem.

Comment #47 - Posted by: SeanMerron at July 29, 2011 8:07 AM

The stream realy sucks here in Sweden. :( Jumps back and forth in time. Repeat segments two or more times, really annoying.

Comment #48 - Posted by: David at July 29, 2011 8:11 AM

Yeah the player is driving me crazy. It not only freezes every 5 seconds.. it skips back and replays every 15 seconds as well. I hope they fix this or it isnt worth watching.

Comment #49 - Posted by: Binnings at July 29, 2011 8:11 AM

My stream is pausing every 5 secs or so as well. I'm in Canada. Was in streaming fine for most of the event, maybe a pause every 30-45 sec tops, but now its pretty annoying to say the least.

Comment #50 - Posted by: Brent at July 29, 2011 8:13 AM

Stream is working fine on my phone. On my computer is just says player is loading. Any suggestions to fix it. Thanks

I'd gladly pay espn3 if their site was helpful at all in telling me how I would get access to the stream.

Comment #53 - Posted by: Eric at July 29, 2011 8:18 AM

sad to see after all the bragging about how good and big the games have become. the stream is not watchable :( any tips on live stats?

Comment #54 - Posted by: jake at July 29, 2011 8:20 AM

@Bryan - same thing phone works fine but both my home and work computer keep saying "player loading". Any help to fix would be great!

Comment #55 - Posted by: mark at July 29, 2011 8:21 AM

For those asking about a good Twitter stream to follow for the games: http://twitter.com/#!/crossfitgames . Looks like Bridges came in first and Speal came in second. No surprise with either.

Comment #56 - Posted by: Bitz at July 29, 2011 8:25 AM

If you're using Internet Explorer and get the "player loading" message, make sure you have compatibility mode turned off. If you reload the page the player should load, though the stream is really choppy, and I'm using a T1 connection!

Comment #57 - Posted by: Chris at July 29, 2011 8:31 AM

so choppy... so sad... :(

Comment #58 - Posted by: Allen Huang at July 29, 2011 8:37 AM

I was so excited to wake up this morning at watch the games online, but the streaming is horrible and is impossible to watch. Please fix it!

Comment #59 - Posted by: jess c at July 29, 2011 8:37 AM

Agreed all around on the poor streaming. I've been so excited to watch over on the east coast and am watching on a T1 connection yet the stream is so choppy and just plain unwatchable. I hope this is just because they're on the beach now and not in the stadium.

Comment #60 - Posted by: Kevin at July 29, 2011 8:41 AM

please fix choppy-ness - I wait all year and this is un-watch-able...

Comment #61 - Posted by: collard at July 29, 2011 8:44 AM

I saw spealler in second but had to go to work... Was that froning in front?

Comment #62 - Posted by: Joey at July 29, 2011 8:48 AM

The choppy feed is due to the fact that the number of people tuning in has exceeded the capabilities of the live-feed to deliver. I have a top of the line computer, high speed cable Internet, and when it is streaming, it looks good, but it keeps freezing. Not fun to watch at all!

Comment #63 - Posted by: Gar at July 29, 2011 8:56 AM

It can be agreed that the live stream is less-than-satisfactory thus far. However, I'm equally concerned with the lack of scoreboard updates.

Comment #64 - Posted by: Josh at July 29, 2011 8:59 AM

Awesome event 1 to watch this a.m. stream worked well for me! Josh Bridges #1 by a long shot, Spealler #2 w Dan Bailey 5th i think..

Comment #65 - Posted by: Joe-fiT at July 29, 2011 9:17 AM

really disappointed cause of the lack of commentators aswell...

Comment #66 - Posted by: jake at July 29, 2011 9:17 AM

They just gave an update on the Men. Orlando DNF the swim. He can stay in the Games but not past the first cut. Mikko received medical attention (after finishing the event?).

Comment #67 - Posted by: AK at July 29, 2011 9:18 AM

How long has anyone let the "Player is loading" message go before getting a feed? This stinks, was looking forward to watching this today

Comment #68 - Posted by: JP at July 29, 2011 9:25 AM

For people looking for updates - Rob Orlando couldn't finish the swim and won't make it past the first cut. Mikko S. had to see a medic after the workout and finished near the bottom of the pack (~40th).

Notable men finishers -
Josh Bridges 1st
Spealler 2nd
Dan Bailey 4th
Blair Morrison 5th
Rich Froning Top 10 or 15 I think
Graham Holmberg ~30th I think?

Notable women finishers-
Samantha Briggs 2nd
Annie Sakamoto 3rd
Annie T 5th
Christy P 6th
Kristin Clever looked to be 20th or so

This is all just what I could gather from a choppy stream, so don't take any of it as gospel. The first event was awesome to watch, I just wish the stream was a little smoother and they didn't cut away from the action for interviews. I'd be happy to *hear* the interviews, I just want to keep watching the race until everyone finishes.

Comment #69 - Posted by: Sam at July 29, 2011 9:35 AM

Choppy and unwatchable feed.

Comment #70 - Posted by: Evan at July 29, 2011 9:41 AM

2010 Games - crappy feed.
USAW CF Open - worst feed ever. Unwatchable.

3rd time the charm?

Comment #76 - Posted by: Tyson at July 29, 2011 10:04 AM

now it seems like when they are at the track it works fine just the beach feed is messed up. hopefully there are no more events outside the HDC and it will work ok.

and Robert I feel you too serious. I'm just gonna say whatever comes to mind...tickle monster!

Comment #77 - Posted by: ryan at July 29, 2011 10:04 AM

Good computer, good internet, various browsers. Not able to watch. Very disappointing.

Comment #78 - Posted by: Noah at July 29, 2011 10:09 AM

Robert's post (#70) is a good one. Throwing is a fundamental movement skill. Shot put and discus are a little more specialized (especially the shot put). I think a softball is a good choice (as stated by others insurance companies wouldn't agree to hand grenades and javelins).

As for the whiners - "broad time and modal domains" pretty much means there is an infinite number of possibilities for events/WODs/activities-- so they will always find something to complain about.

And yet -- isn't the variety and challenge and fun of that variety (along with the results) the reason they are in CrossFit? I too just don't get it. Have fun, mix it up.

Comment #79 - Posted by: Tony Leyland at July 29, 2011 10:17 AM

Difficulty with the browser, this morning at the beach it was there with little cut but now nothing work i can't see the event!

Comment #80 - Posted by: J-F/21/5'9/165 at July 29, 2011 10:34 AM

The throw is legit.

Being able to throw something far doesn't make you the fittest in the world. However, throwing is basic athletic coordination. If you look awkward and cannot throw the softball well, you cannot be the fittest in the world.

Comment #81 - Posted by: Kannon Smith at July 29, 2011 10:36 AM

Re: whiners. I hear them saying "this is something I would suck at"...

Comment #82 - Posted by: MVE m/62/5'8"/157 at July 29, 2011 10:40 AM

The only complaint I have with the softball throw is that it is really really easy to blow your shoulder out for the rest of your life. It happened to me with just 3 pitches at a carnival game where you had to guess your speed. Huge regret. I just hope no one injures themselves because of the poor choice of skill test.

Comment #83 - Posted by: RobertH at July 29, 2011 10:43 AM

where's the live feed and archived 1st event????

Comment #84 - Posted by: ROD at July 29, 2011 10:46 AM

I was having issues with the 'playing is loading...' screen. It never worked. I finally downloaded Google Chrome (free) and was finally able to view the live stream. Hope that helps someone...

Comment #85 - Posted by: Bri Man at July 29, 2011 10:49 AM

#81 RobertH is right.
High chance of injury. Even for the fittest.

Comment #86 - Posted by: Noah at July 29, 2011 10:50 AM

Feed was working fine this morning for the beach, but now its down, good computer, good internet, must be overloaded. Same question, anyone know how to get access to ESPN3? And the softball throw is lame, so is the handstand walk.

Comment #90 - Posted by: Rob at July 29, 2011 11:24 AM

Wow. Have a look at the scoreboard for event 1. The separation of times between atheletes is gross. This event might decide the outcome. Lifting 10 more pounds than someone means nothing when they beat your endurance time by 20 minutes.

Comment #91 - Posted by: T at July 29, 2011 11:28 AM

How do you read the scoreboard--no scores posted below 40th place? Does that mean DNF??? Some big names with no score--Graham, Khalipa, Orlando...

@#97- Totally agree...biggest and most 'watched' games...that's questionable. If these games are truly CrossFit/Reebok coming out party, they had better get things figured out by tomorrow or 'the masses' will think this is a joke...Why didn't they have the same IT people from last year? I had no streaming problems last year

Comment #98 - Posted by: Scott at July 29, 2011 12:32 PM

Comment #100 - Posted by: Jim at July 29, 2011 12:59 PM

Comment #103 - Posted by: Sal at July 29, 2011 1:08 PM

Games Stream is terrible what a dissapointment!!!
I hope its only due to the fact crossfit has become so popular, and not the fact that CF has sold out to Reebok and Espn. Put it on Espn live if only they new what was good for them. Bummer

Comment #104 - Posted by: Mike at July 29, 2011 1:11 PM

I heard Rob O. touched a paddle boat during the swim.

Why do they keep massively underestimating the amount of people who want to watch this online. You think they'd take note from the Open technical issues, the massive explosion of the sport and the pretty much universal access to broadband of this demographic. Contract some sick server people from Google up the street (give them free workout gear or something), buy a few grand worth of equipment, find an adequate data farm to send the feed through and please sort out the broadcast so we can all enjoy this as much as we want to...

Comment #105 - Posted by: Evan at July 29, 2011 1:13 PM

they should have streamed on justin.tv instead

Comment #111 - Posted by: George at July 29, 2011 2:11 PM

Whether or not the softball throw is a legit event.....I just watched some of the fellas throwing (in the archive videos, because the live stream seems DOA, aka "No Rep"). Some of those guys look like they are having seizures while trying to throw that softball. Embarrassing

Comment #112 - Posted by: Jake at July 29, 2011 2:16 PM

Another input: Why is it that ESPN can keep an up-to-the-minute leaderboard for a golf tournament, with multiple golfers on an 18 hole course, but the scoreboard here seems to be updated via Pony Express?

Comment #113 - Posted by: Jake at July 29, 2011 2:29 PM

Lack of commentary makes watching far less enjoyable than last year. It's difficult to follow. I don't know if they figured the commentary for the crowd in the stadium would be enough, but it isn't. It's muffled, often unintelligible and usually talking about something not shown on screen. Disappointed.

Comment #114 - Posted by: l at July 29, 2011 3:14 PM

Unlike for Bitz, the live stream is still not working for me in UK. Can't even get a choppy feed anymore. Nada. :(

If l ask really nicely, might it be possible for someone from mainsite to actually comment on what's going on with the feed?

I'm starting to feel depressed! I was so looking forward to this weekend and now it's looking like I will find out the winner through a written post and see none of the competition live. Last year was fantastic; so far, this year has been a real let down.

Why is Event 2 archived while Event 1 is not? Is it worth waiting for Event 1 or should I forget that?

Anyone have any DL links yet? Sorry for not reading through all the comments if any are posted. Just got home and I'm on the way out. No time to peruse.

Condolences to Rob and especially Mikko, he might as well be the only reason to watch the games.
Still going to watch anyways, despite events like a softball throw which wasn't even about accuracy anyways since YOU ARE SCORED ON DISTANCE FFS

#116: Crossfit Gables, Crossfit South Miami, I Am Crossfit (Doral), or Crossfit Vida Brickell.

The team from Vida is currently 19th in the Games!

Anyone with any inside knowledge as to whether or not the streaming problems will be fixed tomorrow. I'm sure it's being worked on full on but a little status report would be appreciated. Making some plans to have a gathering to watch tomorrow. Should we cancel it?

It'd be super-duper cool to see one of the classic girls or Hero WODs come up as an event.

Oh I really miss the commentary. the music and crowd are a bit much and make it really hard to follow the events. I miss the flow and personal touch of the steaming form the 2010 games.

HQ should pay more attention to the NFL, NBA, and NHL. Fans want to SEE seamless coverage. Everything else is secondary. Professional coverage should be the highest priority-period.

100 sumo dead-lift-high-pull @ #95. 100 push ups. 100 GHD.

27:59:6 to the tune SLAYER. [time includes that spent head-banging, air guitar and air drums].

I like the softball throw.
