While i always support the military, ridiculous administrative orders like the ban on 5 fingers is the reason i got out.

Question: Does anyone do bodybuilding in conjunction with cross-fit?

obviously i do crossfit. i do mma as well, but sometimes i miss the isolation workouts /physique that bodybuilding offers/creates?
any thoughts, ideas, critques, concerns?

I <3 Crossfit

Comment #9 - Posted by: Bill Gibson at July 6, 2011 6:58 PM

@ spencerbrett
i usually follow crossfit football which is more for power training. they have a regular strength workout before the wod. you can look at the site for examples and add whatever you want to work on in a strength wod usually done before the regular workout. hope i helped!

Never tried this one, will do it tomorrow on my skill day. Might have to scale weight for the HPC..not sure if I want to throw 135 on the bar for the whole thing to use the same bar.

Comment #19 - Posted by: matt at July 6, 2011 9:23 PM

The message states that VFF "detract from a military appearance". You know what else detracts from a military appearance? Land blimps in PT uniforms. As one of the very few Army folks on Camp Leatherneck in Helmand province, I can tell you there is A HUGE (no pun intended) disparity between the fitness level of the average Marine versus average Soldier. Marines also give less of a crap about the stupid appearance stuff. Shirts are untucked (gasp!) and females can have their hair in a ponytail (egads!). They are at the gym to work hard and the fact that 90% of them look like terminators reflects that. The Army however chooses to focus on appearance and not results. I wish the ALARACT would have said something to the effect of, "Commanders, height and weight standards will be enforced in 180 days. You have until then to get your SOldiers in compliance or they will be separated. Re-establishment of standards starts now". Instead, we're focusing on damn footwear. Embarassing.

Comment #20 - Posted by: Erik at July 6, 2011 9:47 PM

That's right...the U.S. Army has done it again. What a bunch of morons. It's always about being "professional"....whatever that truly means to them. If that was the case, they would kick out all the fat bastards that are truly unprofessional and embarrassing to the military as a whole. You won't see them doing that.

I don't care what anybody has to say regarding my comments. After 13 years in now, this shouldn't surprise me, but here we go again. The Army as a whole, to include the majority of SGM's and most of the O's focus on the wrong stuff. It's an epidemic and I see no end in sight.

We could worry about training and preparing to a standard not a piece of paper....to hell with that....let's get rid of those funny shoes.

Don't even get me started on PT belts.......

Comment #21 - Posted by: Carlos at July 6, 2011 10:15 PM

@19 I know what you mean. I am overseas right now and I had a gentlemen approach me in the middle of my wod to tell me my shoes were no longer authorized. I could have thrown the weight I was using at him because I love those shoes and what the hell does it matter. Same thing with the PT belts. I am going to wear a reflective pt belt around my camouflage uniform. Really. Let's find something worthwhile to focus on like ending these wars we are in? What's our mission again?

So I read the Five Finger Article. Who cares! They banned the toe shoes, I was extremely upset by this a few months ago when my unit said no go! Honestly though, Merrel makes a perfectly good minimalist shoe. The sole is made by Vibram, as well as New Balance. Adapting and completing the task isn't that what the Army is about? Oh, everyone feel sorry for us because we want to look cool like everyone else, and not have to wear socks or whatever the case. Standards and appearance go hand in hand with physical fitness. Yeah, a lot of Soldiers in the Army are fat, that is a leaders job to fix. The Army changed it's fitness program this year. So, it's not the best but make it your own. You can handle things on your level, find a way to make things work. Quit crying like a bunch of kids because daddy took away your toy. Find an alternative.

The CF store is closed, and they're opening a joint...CF/Reebok store??? What is this!?

Comment #30 - Posted by: NENE at July 7, 2011 4:01 AM

Hooah Kevin. While the removal of Five Fingers is pretty lame, its not the end of the world. The Army has made waaaay lamer changes in its history. For example, while they removed Five Fingers, they also removed the beret. which is awesome. So yeah, they make dumb decisions but its ok. Improvise, adapt, overcome. No biggie. Just train in your vibrams during your own p.t.

Comment #31 - Posted by: John at July 7, 2011 4:08 AM

Thank you Kevin for injecting some common sense into a comment thread that is likely to be full of whining. Nobody is saying you can’t wear them; you just can’t wear them in a military uniform, because let’s face it, they look goofy. Get yourself a pair of Merrell Barefoots for organized PT and worry about more important things. That the Army has other problems to address is irrelevant.

Back hurting from Morrison; almost took a rest day but DT didn't get an extra so here we go. Did scale, hugely.

w/u - static n-s, bar dislocates, Burgener w/u x 2, cfwu x 1 (10's; 15 pullups), 3 reps DL ==> HPC ==> PJ @ 95#. Back hurting.

w/o - 5 r. for time 12-9-6 of DL-HPC-PJ, 75#

7:32

c/d - 15 more pullups; 10 KTE; walk dog

At 30 PU, I'm 20 shy of 50 for today. Will get them somehow.

Got to love-hate 2 hero WODs within a few days of one another...this one has come up 2x within 6-7 months; excited to hit it again with a solid back.

Comment #67 - Posted by: Markyo at July 7, 2011 8:45 AM

Ok, I was recently apart of the U.S. Army and before they came out with the ban (which actually began going into effect in February), I wore my vibrams for PT every day. They weren't bright pink like what most females would wear, they were a tasteful black or white so it would match the PT uniform. It's rediculous that the army would ban these shoes because of "looks". The vibrams look so much better then the entire PT uniform put together! The idiotic rules and regulations, as well as idiocracy of TRADOC/higher is just one reason why I got out!
Don't get me wrong though, I still have respect for those who serve and sacrifice.

"DT"

Five rounds for time of:
155 pound Deadlift, 12 reps
155 pound Hang power clean, 9 reps
155 pound Push jerk, 6 reps

RXd time 20:32

I racked the jerks. I could have done this faster but last time I got hurt on the 4th round, so it was a big mental psyche out to get passed the workout with out getting hurt again. I just wanted to finish the workout and I'm really happy with the time.

I did rip my hand and bleed a bit. I didn't even feel it bit I got a blood blister on my ring finget on my right hand and ripped it. it doest hurt and isnt real bad.

LAST TIME
BIG FAT DNF DID NOT FINISH!!!

I was on the cleans on the 4th set and on rep 6 I caught it low on my chest and heard a ''POP'' like when you pop your fingers but bigger and alot of pain. I crumpled from it, felt arround didn't know what I did. After a bit iI tried another rep and caught it good, but still feeling pain. Stood arround, (Brady had stopped the clock at this point)

I thought I would finish the workout anyway Biut I picked up the bar and soreness. Tried Bradys 115bar cleaned it easy but holding the bar in rack position the weight pressing down hurt.

Well there it is.

I was wondering why I was feeling unusually anxious about this WOD - almost Fran anxious. But then I realized that this was the first hero WOD I completed when I started crossfit (scaled of course). It was the first time the thought of someone else pushed me through a workout. Three years later DT is still having that effect on me.

Hey TacticalTom (Comment #47) - Crossfit doesn't miss any muscles. It just doesn't isolate some of them, i.e. biceps as in curls. That's a big difference - missing vs. isolating. But, have fun with the curls. I've got nothing against throwing in some bodybuilding or any other sport for that matter. Isn't that one of the tenents of Crossfit? - To do as many sports as possible even if it is CFs nemesis bodybuilding. I did feel like I had to clear that one up though. For GPP Crossfit will hit every muscle as or more efficiently than anything out there. For bodybuilding or "body sculpting" you'd want to isolate some muscles. "Sculpting" will help to achieve the looks required in bodybuilding, but it won't help you increase your work capacity (move weight across a distance) and time (doing it faster.)

Comment #115 - Posted by: Andres at July 7, 2011 12:36 PM

hey, my names Jameson! spelled different. sweeet. Thanks to our guys in uniform! all of them! though, i feel the heirarchy goes something like airforce, navy, army, marines, marine recon, delta force, then seals at the top in terms of pure badassness. i guess the airforce spec ops guys would be somewhere in there. anyways I always try to think of spec ops and seals when i'm having trouble with WOD motivation!

You know...

The Army could (and should) go back to conducting all training in boots.

It isn't like you go on a patrols barefoot, or clear a building barefoot, or do anything that requires your feet to be specially-adapted to anything except boots.

I enjoy wearing my VFF, but would never have worn them to PT. The goal was to be a part of the team, not stand apart from the team.

Every once in a while a WOD comes along and stomps a big old mud hole in me. "DT" is one of those WODs, appropriate that it's a Hero WOD. Anyway, started at 155, but after first round of cleans had to go down to 135, damn. Finished in 12:50. I love my VFF's, fontunately I can do PT on my own, so I wear them with my civvies PT gear. I agree that's it's stupid for the Army to focus on this rather than the fat bodies in uniform especially since we are going through a RIF, it would be too easy to roll out enough fatties to meet end strength, but those numbers would include a lot of senior NCOs and Field grades, hmmmmm.

I hope the VFF trend dosnt move north to Canada. I guess every army is the same in the end. To you those who say " worry about more important things" thats what the command should have been doing when they decided to dictate what footwear a soldier can wear during PT. This is about the least important issue regarding national defence I can think of.

I dont care if one of my troops wears flip flops if he is out front thats fine with me. Performance over appearance, that is the entire premise of crossfit.

Here is an article by a real leader who stood his ground for the real soldiers.

I tried a crossfit endurance WOD this morning and DT scaled to 135 lbs. this evening. Not sure if it was the workout this morning and/or the 102 degree heat this evening but I ended up doing hang squat cleans and they kicked as usual.

20:11, 135lbs. 2nd wod of the day done at 7:30pm

at noon did:
10 rft of:
21 double unders
15 pull ups
9 wall ball burpees, 20lbs
28:42
should've done 3-5 rounds to keep it short. or maybe i should've gone lighter with DT to keep that time shorter.

either way i'm burnt out.

The Army has always been about uniformity. In a deployed combat environment, standards are often relaxed to a degree, but for the most part, and especially in a garrison environment, it's always been about uniformity. To some it's a sign of discipline. The Army doesn't allow fadish haircuts, why should they allow what some would call "fadish shoes". As stated by many above, there are plenty of minimalist shoes available that do not have little pockets for each toe. Deal with it. It's the Army. There's nothing we can do about it anyway now that the ALARACT has been published. Personally I don't really care if somebody wants to wear five fingers or Air Jordans for organized PT, but apparently somebody in the Army with more rank than me does. If you don't want anybody to care what you wear for PT, join SOCOM.

Had to scale this time to 135 for HPC and PJ.
Rt wrist sore and just didn't have it.
Better form with mule kick and fully opening hips with legs beneath shoulders for each rep.

Total time was 18 min. All in all not a good day, but did keep moving through it.
DL- straight
HPC- 6-3
JP- 4-2

Yuck.
Comment #487 - Posted by: Matt A at April 14, 2010 4:49 AM

As Rxd
time splits were:
1.37, 2.39 , 2.38, 3.48, 3.36 = 14.20
DL straight
HPC: 9-9-6,3-5,4
PJ: 6, 6, 6, 3-3, 2-4

form slopy at end. PJ were good, HPC upto collar then down from catch, probably could have stood up fully more at end of lift.
Comment #487 - Posted by: Matt A at April 14, 2010 4:49 AM

"DT"
Five rounds for time of:
155 pound Deadlift, 12 reps
155 pound Hang power clean, 9 reps
155 pound Push jerk, 6 reps

Time = 19:31
AVg hr = 74%
88-44% spread.
cal = 381
Delta HR = 177-148
LAp 1 = 2.48 69%
lap 2 = = 4.10 73%
Lap 3 = 3.54 75%
Lap 4 = 4.59 75%
lap 5 = 3.47 76%

grip got loose at end on cleans. Bit limiting there.
DL were straight through. Cleans were 2 and 3 sets after 1st rnd.
Push jerk were straight on 3 of 5 sets.
A good work out.

Able to drop weight helped. Pretty good hip ext on cleans. Mostly 3's in later rounds.

Grip was my limiting factor, as I could not grip the bar and had metal plates at a globo-gym.

next time sub-9 goal!

So trying to build up to doing this Rx although 155lb is heavy for the HPC and Jerks (my overhead sucks).
I used 145lb
and was happy to get through it at 28:29.

done at local globo gym with metal weights, so couldn't drop the weight. Just getting back into it after slicing my palm open and and injuring my shoulder. HPC and Jerks were difficult...still working on over head strength.
