with the recent explosion of popularity and the partnering with reebok, maybe a next step could be a Women of Crossfit layout in one of the magazines? I'm not talkin models here, because maybe plenty of models do crossfit. No, I'm talkin' 'bout the real women of crossfit. helllls yah

Comment #8 - Posted by: TX at July 2, 2011 5:47 PM

Jon Gilson - Great interview. You're an interesting guy and I'd like to see more from you on the main site. I'd also like to ask you to consider curbing your use of the word "retarded". It's offensive and hurtful to those with developmental delays. Many thanks.

Comment #22 - Posted by: shelena hoberg at July 2, 2011 7:05 PM

As a.. strong, empowered, married woman I love to see other WOMEN who are strong and powerful, it is not awful, or sexist to look at a strong woman and say MY GOD she is spectacular, now looking at a woman who looks like this and saying oh this is awful, terrible, sexist, I thought this was past this... Now that IS sexist I believe the only time we will ever be truly equal is when women and men get to walk around in the same manner topless, braless what have you (and I am a mother who has a son and a daughter) CONGRATS to a strong man and a strong woman Happy 7years here is a drink to many more!

Here come the haters !!!

Good on you Mrs Mitch - my wife has a physique very similar to yours and has Crossfitted for about a year. We're 15 years married and 2 kids also.

I back TX #10 - how about a 'real' pic spread or calendar (proceeds to charity ?) or something showing some of the incredible female physiques this great sport has produced ? It will explode many fitness myths and if it gets one girl into the garage gym and addicted then it's win-win for all.

My $0.02.

@ #20: if you're getting sharp pains in your shoulder joint you should stop. You could have impingement or inflammed rotator cuff. Make sure your form is right. Hands a little past shoulder width, elbows slightly over bar not directly under it. Read Rippetoes starting strength he has excellent cues for good form.

Sharp pains are a sign of bad things. As a person who has had shoulder surgery because of "sharp pains" when doing shoulder presses, I can tell you it might be a good idea to get it checked out by a doctor - especially if you have tried laying off the shoulder workouts and applying liberal amounts of ice. It could be one of several injuries. The pain you feel is likely your activity injuring it more.

Comment #41 - Posted by: JIm at July 2, 2011 9:21 PM

I have what I believe to be a trapezius strain - pretty constant midline dull pain. Anyway, should I avoid shoulder press?

I think what works here as opposed to the other topless back shots of females is they added the back story to the picture. When you realize that these shots and photos are not gratuitous, you appreciate the photo as being more than a T&A shot.

Have you tried doing some exercises for the rotator cuff? Especially infraspinatus/supraspinatus should be trained to get balance in the shoulders. Imbalance can create shoulder problems...

Mitch is indeed a lucky man. Having a spouse that shares his passion for fitness is a blessing. My wife is 7 weeks out from a c-section of our 3rd child. Two days ago we "tabata'ed" together, she is already hooked. My two oldest kids watch me workout and join in on the push-ups and burpees. My son (3.5) has perfect burpee form, and my daughter (1.8) has perfect overhead squat form, holding a dowel rod. Make it a family affair if you can guys, its time well spent!

#23 Gar - He wasn't talking about spark plugs. He was using "retarded" as a synonym for "stupid" or "dumb". When "retard" or "retarded" are used by people without disabilities in this way, it reinforces painful stereotypes of people with intellectual disabilities being less valued members of humanity. www.r-word.org

I'm in the mountains, but I did shoulder press before I came up, first time going strict since bicep tendon reattachment,

Got 170 for 3, then pruned back just to be safe. Still about 5-7 months out from full healing.

@20

comment 36, 42, and 57 are mostly correct. however, I can tell you first hand that proper form, rest, and strengthening the rotator cuff will not relieve your symptoms if you have poor shoulder flexibility. All those other pieces are just as important but if you don't have the scapular flexibility your going to feel pain every time you go overhead

Comment #70 - Posted by: Jeffrey Blackwell at July 3, 2011 8:06 AM

Sunday musings...

1) Boomerang. An implement which when thrown returns to the thrower.

2) Boomerang. Hails from Australia. Wondering if Lil'bingo is planning on returning from his visit.

3) Boomerang. Nickname for children who return to the home of their parents after leaving for college (or life). Mrs. bingo and I spent the collective childhood years of the bingo progeny steeling ourselves for the inevitability of their permanent emigration away from Cleveland. All we hear is that Cleveland cannot retain its young, after all. "The Heir" left for college in Denver, and "Lil'bingo" left to explore Crossfit as a career with a first step in So Cal. Cleveland...SoCal...Cleveland...Denver...

A funny thing happened along the way to the empty nest, though: everyone wants to return to Cleveland! Go figure. "The Heir" seeks a job, looking only in Greater Cleveland, while he contemplates grad school. Lil'bingo talks only of his return home as he contemplates a CF career. Even "Lovely Daughter" has extended her acceptable landing zone only as far afield as Pittsburgh.

Go figure.

4.) Crossfit Crossroads. I'm stuck. Stuck on a plateau. Feels like some 3 months or so now. Does this happen to you at all? It feels like a Crossfit plateau, but it might in fact be a much broader one. I'm not sure.

Outcomes, the right side of the 'black box', are pretty stale at he moment. No PR's. Actually, if I look closely, my WOD results on repeats is ~10% worse. Hmmm...why is that? Diet? Not much changed there in any real way. Same foods in the same volume; same alcohol intake, + or -. Pretty much Main Page WOD's done on the same days and with the same volume.

Psychological? Attitude? I've noted a bit more difficulty making myself go to that 'dark place' where Crossfit intensity is found, for sure, but nothing has changed in my workout environment (workout alone in globo-gym 2 miles from house and office). Stress? The grind of my day job? Perhaps. Changing my venue, going to an Affiliate gym might be the solution.

Am I sick? Do I have some sort of quiet, real illness that I am presently unaware of? You know, the Crossfit definition of health is "Health = Fitness; Fitness = Health." Is my gym performance a proxy for my health? Coach would look here; maybe not first, but he would certainly say to look.

Or is it simply that I am now 51 years old, and that I have run the course of what I can expect in terms of continual fitness improvements through everything that is Crossfit. Coach has opined in the past that one can expect 10 years of improved fitness no matter when you start Crossfit, but I think he also said this was conjecture, and he said it some years ago. The curve must eventually flatten under the weight of age. Is this just a particularly long plateau, or is this the last flat spot before the slopes are no longer ascending?

I've always found the plateaus more confusing than either the ascents or the descents. You?

I'll see you next week...

I have a friend who recently had a massive stroke, which was the result of a large blood clot in his brain. He lost alot of the mobility of his left arm and leg, but he is hopeful that he will get much of it back. He was an accomplished rugby player and, at 40, an avid weightlifter. Since his stroke, he has expressed an interest in doing CF after he regains mobility. Given his history, is it safe for him to engage in intense CF workouts? I would appreciate any insight from any MDs in the community. Thanks.

Farmer's market in your area? I manage a ten acre organic farm and vend at two local farmer's markets. Since we sell our produce directly to the consumer, our produce is, with few exceptions, cheaper than the conventionally grown produce you would find at the grocery store, and much better quality, too.

And even if it isn't certified "organic," if you are buying your produce directly from the person who is growing it, you can ask him/her about their practices, and come to your own conclusions about them. Some local growers I know do not use herbicides and pesticides, but for some reason or another, have chosen to not pursue organic certification.

Bottom line: support your local grower, and your pocket book might not take such a hit!

twin 53 lb kettlebells x5
62 lb kettlebell, 5 reps one arm, then the other
125 x 5 reps, on a bar; 3 rounds

The 62 pounder in one arm was easier than the 125 on a bar, interestingly enough.

Nice engineering, (above) Mitch.

New 5RM PR at 150 by 5#. Just did some heavy SP 3 days ago (when I hit my new 1RM PR at 175). That plus doing some deep HSPU on parallettes yesterday had my shoulders pretty worn out going into this. Then again, when my 1RM PR was 165, my 5RM PR was 140. So maybe fatigue didn't play a role today.

I am not a medical doc, so no guidance in that area for your friend.

However if he does get medical clearance I think Crossfit would help him in many ways. I had a stoke about 3 months ago,due to a blood clot to the brain. I lost full use of my left side for about a week. With great support from my box CFLO, I am starting to recover. Doing things I didnt think possible a few months back

If you friend would like to correspond with someone who has gone down a similar path, please have him contact me.

No Tyson"s chicken! Sorry man, but meat from a CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation) is not the way to go.

I would give you the same advice in regards to meat as I did with produce. Find a local dairy/butcher/cattle person and support them. Find out what their practices are, and go with your conscience.

Unfortunately, my experience is that local meat and dairy from a small farmer is usually more expensive than its mass-produced equivalent, but you get a product which is superior in taste, better for your health, better for the environment, and all while supporting local markets and growers.

I would also argue that buying locally strengthens food security, and hence national security, by strengthening local food webs; creating more efficient, diverse and independent communities.

A great book to read on food issues is, Omnivores Dilemma, by Michael Pollan.

Cheers!

@ bingo #73 - rich post as always. Great to hear kids are returning to near-nest.

To your plateau musings: Haven't been doing Crossfit long enough (starting 5th month) to have any long-term plateaus, but a couple of things I have noticed that may be related: I have a short-term (2 week? 1 month?) pullup plateau right now -- it is confusing and more than a little frustrating. What I figure is that I'll keep doing WODs, supplementing with 50 pullups a day, and check back in a month or two. Trying to trust the process, I guess.

I would hope, and bet, that your 3-month plateau ends soon, with a big breakthrough.

The other item that jumped at me is WOD-context -- sounds like your globo-gym and my Y have in common one thing (or so I assume): lack of camaraderie, or even simpler, someone, another Crossfitter, just pushing us when it might help. Since I'm just fumbling around with a lot of brand-new-to-me movements (every workout is an occasion for a PR if you've never done it before ;), I haven't noticed the downside of a lack of fellow Crossfitters too much -- but on occasion, like today when I was staring at the 55# DB on the ground in a pool of my sweat, dreading picking it up for 10-15 more swings during "Morrison," I could imagine a bunch of nutso Crossfitters screaming at me to pick it up and finish. Talk about an attitude adjustment. Probably would have killed me to do so, but probably would have cut a bunch of time from my first "Morrison" too...

I'm not joining a box any time soon, but there are several nearby, and I'm guessing that if I stick with Crossfit for 9months to a year, I should give a box a whirl. Or talk a buddy into joining the Y and trying Crossfit with me.

Best,

Matt

Nice Pic, I'm jealous... not of the physique of this man's wife (impressive though it be) but of the fact that the couple does WOD's together. My better half did a 5k with me the other day - which was really fun - but has a lot of hang-ups about working out regularly. :(

Cash-out: Some more pull-ups; 500m row, hard but not all-out pace for 350m, then sprint final 150m (1:40).

Great day - any day with a 15# PR is. Form and staying tight immensely helpful. Last rep at 145 stalled half-way and almost didn't go up.

Bruce @ #201- Perhaps you failed to take into consideration the fact that this woman has had two babies. I don't care how old she is, she looks amazing.

Comment #230 - Posted by: Erin at July 7, 2011 1:31 PM

Yeah I gotta say for anyone posting negative comments about this. Grow up already. It's the human body, it's the back of a woman. If someone isn't old enough to see that, then maybe they're not old enough to do crossfit. Fitness includes the body, so what's wrong with showing it? It's not like these are X rated pics or anything and the guy is proud of his wife. I would do the same thing. I think it's ridiculous that pics of guys can be posted all day long, but as soon as it's a woman like this some people freak out. Get a grip on reality.
