Oh man, this was the first CrossFit workout I ever did. It was over a year ago, I couldn't finish, and even so it took me over 90 minutes. I haven't tried it since. Can't wait to give it another shot!

CrossFitter down. My 84 year old father, an avid CrossFitter since March, fell in his garage while working on his box jumps, fracturing his hip. A member at CrossFit Pursuit, he took to the methods, 3X/week at 5am with my mom. Every conversation we have, anymore, centers around CrossFit and the daily WOD. Since neither he or Mom (77) can do pullups, they installed a pullup bar and rings in their garage. They have made huge progress. The first time I was able to speak to him this afternoon, while he was lying in his hospital bed, waiting for the surgeon to visit, he said, looks like I won't be able to CrossFit for a little while. I look to see Crossfit as his post surgical rehab.

Very odd "Fit Club" article. Maybe because I'm a part of the "cult", but I find it tough to understand how someone can see all those positive changes and then... "I quit" because I love doughnuts.

Would you ever wake up and feed your dog a doughnut every morning? How can you do it to yourself?

The Fit Club article was seemingly a pointless article about personal apathy. Unfortunately, that is probably the average Joe out there wondering if it is worth the extra effort to sweat, sacrifice, and hurt so much. Some people just don't care about their health until it is too late.

@#4. I agree with you. I liked the article but I just can't fathom somebody quitting after seeing measurable and visible progress insuch short time. I was a personal trainer in a globo gym (unfortunately) on and off for about 4 years and that was the hardest thing to deal with. All the college education and various certifications but some people are just lazy asses. So between that and the gym I was employed by not really taking a liking to the crossfit style training I was doing with my clients, I'm now a bartender. But I still get excited when I meet a fellow crossfitter and can talk about things like Fran times and snatches. :)

Author Adam K. Raymond has demonstrated by the tone and content of his article everything that is wrong with this country and why the USA just like all empires before it will end up on the ash heap of history. re: the "Fit Club" article. Crossfit is not for everyone. As much as scaling is preached, some folks are just unwilling to push themselves and I find it sad. Why after seeing improvement would you decide to go back to eating donuts? Because it's easy, and exercise is not easy otherwise everyone would be in shape. We are quickly becoming a nation of coddled, entitled, shortcut taking apathy. I've been crossfitting for 1.5 years (prior to that I was a runner and a cyclist) and I am currently in the best shape of my life. Everything is easier when you are fit, and the suffering endured in a WOD and with other crossfitters is empowering. Would I love to see a nation of crossfitters - absolutely, but I know that's not gonna happen.

So how is a soldier supposed to do this workout while deployed and actually be ready for a strenuous mission in the hills of afghanistan when it comes up? Military readers, admit to yourselves that you aren't getting any stronger on this program. Do some sprints, develop strength with PROGRESSION, and call it good.

Imagine that I'm going to teach you how to fire a handgun, but I keep making a peculiar mistake: I refer to the handgun as a "shovel".

Throughout the class, I refer to shovels repeatedly: "Ok, slide the rack back on your shovel and make sure the slide lever has engaged to lock it into position."

This sounds absurd, because "shovels" and "handguns" refer to such common, particular, concrete objects that everyone is familiar with. Everyone knows what a shovel is and you sound crazy using "shovel" to mean something which is clearly NOT a shovel. (More accurately, you sound as if you don't understand that the word shovel refers to a very definite object, and/or that you don't know which object it refers to.)

The problem is, with the democratization of writing, publishing, and interacting by text, we are now seeing that many of us, or most of us, are using the wrong words regularly. To someone with a common vocabulary, command of syntax, etc, it's forgivable that others confuse you're and your, their and there.

But what about the person to whom the difference between a "regimen" and a "regime" is as clear as the difference between a "shovel" and a "handgun"?

(This particular example is problematic, because the mistake between "regime" (a system of government, particularly a despotic one) and a "regimen" (a routine of specified activities) has been made for a long time, so that there is some precedent (before the era of facebook) for being exposed, in writing, to the wrong usage. However, literate people almost unanimously agree that the difference is clear, and remains indisputable because of the long history of correct usage.)

I'm looking at a CrossFit gym-management software this morning, trying to use a demo version of it, and as a prominent function of the software (program a WOD), it features "circuit name" and "add a circuit".

For those of us who know that circuit actually means a specified sequence of exercises, and a workout style that means repeating a sequence of exercises, this stops us cold: They keep calling the handgun a shovel. The brain chokes on the contradiction, tripping and saying WTF?!?!... until one can brush it aside and continue.

(I tell myself: It's ok. You're the freak here, who actually knows that words mean very specific things. A shovel and a handgun are similar enough if you're only trying to distinguish them from a box of jelly donuts and toothpaste.)

Trying to be sympathetic, I note that they have a function in the software which needs a name, so they've repurposed an older term which does have a strong analogy to a circuit: a group of exercises (nevermind that the circuit might be a single stretch or monomodal activity like a 2000 meter row).

Repurposing words for new functions is legitimate. It simply means that if we're going to make ourselves at home in a new system, we'll get used to the new shades of meaning. If we're on a lifeboat with only 4 objects, and we have to use a handgun to dig through a bucket of dirt in which we occasionally find a nutritious snail, soon enough we won't care about the original difference in meaning between a shovel and a handgun.

When CrossFit takes over the printing of money, the regulation of commerce, appointing Pat Sherwood and Miranda Oldroyd to the Supreme Court, and replacing the Dept of Housing and Urban Development with, simply, Burpees... on that great day, people like myself who fussed about the confusion between "regime" and "regimen" will look silly.

And until that day comes, curmudgeons who stumble in confusion when they see "shovel" used to mean "handgun" are just standing in the way of progress. Right?

If the author of Fit Club truly stuck to a good diet during his experiment, the first doughnut probably made him want to throw up. I wonder if he was smart enough to not pick up a second one.

On a note related to yesterday's garage gym video. Why is it I always want to puke after I watch the garage gym videos. Is it really just from the camera not being on a tripod? It sometimes takes hours for the nausea to go away.

Look I love CF as much as the next guy, but let's stop with the douchey comments about the article. He tried CF and it didn't stick. He's not a quitter, or pathetic, he just chose to spend his life partying and eating doughnuts instead of constantly focused on fitness. In the end we both end up dead anyway, so all that really matters is if you're satisfied with how you lived.

I would love to see CF as a competitive sport in high schools. Rowing is starting to grow pretty rapidly in Florida. Unfortunately, CF doesn't draw crowds, therefore no money, therefore no AD would support it, unless it grew out of small, private schools who didn't have football teams.

did the pack kind of wish I'd rx'd it.
sub'd wall ball for 2 20lb db's held together and done like a thruster. sub'd back ext's for good mornings with a 45#bar. jump was on 20" bench.
instead of 1pood kb I did 40lb db
jump ropes were singles and did 140. forgot rope and spent 1 min trying to make something to work. ended up just simulating them with imagined rope!

Froning will win the games. Without much experience or rope climbing technique he got 2nd, after having a huge lead! Now he has another year under his belt. He will not be touched.
IF it does not have as many events as last year Khalipa will get 2nd. His strength and power are unmatched, but as more and more events pile on, I just don't think the human body can handle that kind of output for that long.
If it is a games with many events than 2nd and 3rd will go to Bailey then mikko with Spealer and Bridges battling for fourth

Read the fit-club article & I gotta say that I was just pumped to see MY BOX referenced.

I think we call all agree that crossfit, like just about everything else, is not for everyone. There are folks who read it and were like I gotta check it out after the results he got. There were also others who were like I'd rather eat donuts each morning than commit to a workout. I don't hate either way, but I know what I like seeing that I have been working out for the better part of 10 years and XFitting for 7 months, and I would not trade it in.

Like the saying goes "get some or go home". Thing is...I would rather "get some" :)

First Filthy Fifty for me: 30.24 with a couple of subs.

w/u - static neck-shoulder, then 3-10 of each of the 10 exercises

w/o - 50 box 20", 50 Jump pullups, 50 KBS 35# DB, Walking lunge 50 steps, 50K2E, 50 PP 45#, 50 BE, 50 WBS 12#, 50 Burpees, 100 single unders

3rd real crossfit WOD! Finished in 53:08, subbed back extensions with supermans, wall balls with thrusters and double unders with singles for 200. Damn good feeling at the end, pretty close to yakking after those burpees. Still getting used to the fact that I should rest as little as possible between exercises. Rep scheme of 10,9,8,7,6,5,5 for pull-ups, thrusters and burpees. I don't care about how anybody views crossfit, I'm loving it so far! Finally feeling like I'm getting something out of my training.

That was a really tough workout. Also, a group of people were using the only station I feel comfortable doing a press on and so I put it off until last.. I was really struggling.

finally got to try to filthy fifty! This was BRUTAL, but I loved this workout. Gave blood yesterday, and I'm still feeling it today.

Only modifications were a 35lb dumbbell swing (no kettleballs), a 40lb push press, and I tried DUs (could only get one at a time) and eventually gave up on those because I was spending too much time trying to just get more than one in a row, so I just did 200 SUs to finish it out. Overall, hardest/slowest areas were kettleball swings and burpees

Just read Fit Club article, author makes no mention of the ecstasy and satisfaction that accompanies pushing beyond the limits of merely average physical activity. He fails to mention you must work up to doing the WOD as rx'd. You don't have to be a "pro" but you can't be a quitter. Of course it's challenging, and yes, if you don't puke at least once when you begin you're not working hard enough. And doughnuts? Shoot, I eat 'em quite regularly for breakfast with a cup of coffee; but, they shouldn't be a staple food as they are for most Americans. Disgusting. I must agree, he is lame.

kte could have been faster - was sore from doing the L-pullups yesterday and I still can't get the rhythm right on them.

Burpees were a killer; they came right at a time when I considered jettisoning my lunch. Had to break them up with a lot of rest. Harsh having them so late in the sequence. But on the plus side, at least box jumps are over with really quick.

I was sooo sore the past two days from the WOD with the pulups and burpees 50 +10, 40+20, 30+30, 20+40, 10+50)
I warmed up for quite a bit and used the foam roler a bit as well.
I was pretty happy with the numbers.. I now have an 18lb med ball so I just throw it about 11 or 12 feet to make up for the difference.. it's pretty hard, so my hands are always sore the day after wall balls... for me the knees to elbows and the wallballs were the most taxing by far.. Previously I have only been able to use a 10 lb ball but was throwing it up about 14 feet to try to make up for the difference.. it was harder with the heavier ball obviously.. I think that it was harder because when you throw a lighter ball, even higher up, you also get inherently a little more time to rest between reps as the ball rises and falls father, so the time per rep is less so that's why I think it felt harder on that stage.
I always like this WOD.. I think I'm pretty good usually on longer grinder WODs like these. It also lets me slip a little and then make up my ground if I happen to be slower on any event, like the wall balls. I have been working on the wall balls and I feel better on them already. They are a fantastic movement.

This was one of the hardest workouts that I have done in a while and I really like the way that CrossFit has been switching things up. I am a football coach and lift weights with my players, but some of these workouts really get you pushing the mental toughness side of things!

Hit a wall when I got to the burpees...split those up with the DU's...split the knees to elbows up with the push press...other than that did everything one at a time...actually used a kettlebell for the first time instead of a dumbell...a little easier on the hands

CFWU-2. From home in evening. Shortcut to get done quicker since I slept in that morning. Burgener.
28:00-PR even though WB & Burpees terrible. WB broken into mostly 10's. Burpees mostly 6's & 7's. KB unbroken. Good job w/hips back, chest up. DU decent so this really helped time. Had a couple sets of at least 15. Tech pretty good on BJ. Lost count on lunges but got at least 50. First 30 back ext unbroken then 6's & 7's.

6th WOD in a row & done out of sequence after heavy DL's yesterday Scaling: 20" box, stood on six 45# plates for jumping p/u's, k/b swings w/ 35# plate, & only 25 burpees. I was too drained when the burpees came around so cutting it short seemed best. The KTE took almost 11 minutes, so need to work on those!

Ahh, the filthy fifty. The WOD that feels okay until the last 7 minutes. This went pretty well, I was a little more efficient through the first seven exercises. Wall balls were about the same as last time. Burpees were a little better. But seriously, putting 50 burpees here is just evil. As it is every time, it was a tug-o-war with Pukie during these. Happy to get the double-unders unbroken. I was not feeling great, but I was able to focus. First time sub-20!
