what if I can't even do strict pull ups, let alone L's?

Comment #1 - Posted by: Mufasa at June 27, 2011 5:03 PM

Diggin the pullup rig!

Comment #2 - Posted by: Steve Mac at June 27, 2011 5:03 PM

that was hands down one of the coolest CF vids i've ever seen. much respect to film maker and Mikko...

Comment #3 - Posted by: leonardo at June 27, 2011 5:10 PM

Awesome video!!! Mikko will win it again!!!!!

Comment #4 - Posted by: DTS at June 27, 2011 5:13 PM

Short, intense, extraordinarily cool vid. Mikko is focused, no doubt.

Comment #5 - Posted by: bmw at June 27, 2011 5:26 PM

I completely disagree, I mean Mikko is the man, and I am rooting for him at the games... but that video did nothing for me. I guess I am not a huge fan of slow motion shots where the camera is zoomed in so much that you need to assume what he is doing for a majority of the video.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Matt B at June 27, 2011 5:40 PM

Mufasa, if you're have problems doing L-pullups then do your strict assisted ones or whatever, then throw is some knees to elbows at a similar rep number. In my opinion this is the best way to meet the intention of the WOD and scale it to you. Also check this site for the scaled workouts: http://www.crossfitbrandx.com/index.php/forums/viewthread/13292/

Comment #7 - Posted by: Vick at June 27, 2011 5:42 PM

Comment #8 - Posted by: Quinn McCutchen M/41/147/5'10" at June 27, 2011 5:46 PM

I agree that vid was pretty useless. Wonder how much weight it was? Then again, I am impressed that he is okay letting a camera get that close up on him. I don't need to see my pores that closely.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Mike Hollister at June 27, 2011 5:57 PM

Hey Matt - I can understand your point about the videography; personal preference. But to see him do a 5 rep FS with what I'm assuming to be some very heavy weight (check out how his eyes become more engorged with blood with each rep), I thought was pretty cool. Plus, he was likely doing 5 reps at twice my 1RM. My two pesos.

Comment #10 - Posted by: bmw at June 27, 2011 5:58 PM

I didn't know Rube Goldberg was a CrossFitter.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Mike Clipp at June 27, 2011 6:24 PM

haha at Rube comment, cool striking video. Love Mikko but really lame footage....im pretty sure we all knew his "one goal" before watching a shoulder up vid of him front squatting...

Comment #12 - Posted by: Joe-fiT at June 27, 2011 6:27 PM

If you think Mikko is not strong, google AMRAP of King Kong in 20 Minutes by Mikko Salo, I think he did 12 rounds of an AMRAP of King kong. I mean enjoy, peace.

Comment #13 - Posted by: SANTI at June 27, 2011 6:30 PM

Correction, 11 Rounds and 2 Squat cleans, that's how many rounds Mikko did. :) Yup He is Strong and good all around. BOOMSAUCE.

Comment #14 - Posted by: SANTI at June 27, 2011 6:34 PM

I think it was 14 rounds!

Comment #15 - Posted by: Jeremy Wagner at June 27, 2011 6:37 PM

Love Mikko but the video didn't do much for me either.

Comment #16 - Posted by: MikeyJ at June 27, 2011 6:39 PM

Mikko is the man, but that video was weird...I think people would rather see a bland, informational, documentary approach than something obnoxiously artistic. Just my opinion...and yes, a lot of peoples goal is to win the games...

Comment #17 - Posted by: Jeff at June 27, 2011 7:02 PM

It's been like a month since I posted... not slacking off though, I promise! Elbow tendonitis has made pullups impossible... today went for a little bit of an arm workout to test it.

Behind-the-neck Jerk -
10 x 135
7 x 165
5 x 185
3 x 205
3 x 215
2 x 225

Previous 1RM was 225. DO WORK!!! Good luck with this one everybody, looking forward to getting back onto the main site WODs!

Comment #18 - Posted by: Slav/170#/68"/23 at June 27, 2011 7:05 PM

wow, video is taking a hammering :) and rightly so, zero production value, looks like it was shot on a whim. the VO at the end was redundant. we expect better because we are used to seeing so much better :)

Mikko and Speller 1,2 on the podium this year!!

Comment #19 - Posted by: kent at June 27, 2011 7:07 PM

Loved the Mikko video. I thought it gave a good sense or account of the intensity/drive/focus that many of the top games competitors have and did it in a semi-artistic way.

Having said that I will admit to having a man-crush/hero worship thing going on with Mikko, so I'd probably endorse a video of Mikko reading at the library!

Comment #20 - Posted by: Shane at June 27, 2011 7:08 PM

I just thought the Mikko video was creepy.

Comment #46 - Posted by: cf6 at June 28, 2011 3:30 AM

Great video of Mikko Salo. If it was part of an ad campaign it would sell a lot of athletic gear. I believe without Sevan's film contributions, CrossFit would not be as successful as it is today. The only thing that approaches his film making expertise are his interrogations of Dave Castro.

The words "uncomfortably close" and "a bit awkward" come to mind. Perhaps a little video proof of a man-crush left unchecked and gone too far.

Thought you guys would find this as cool as I did. I'm currently traveling in South Korea and while eating dinner tonight I happened to catch a Korean fitness reality TV show where two people discover what it means to be fit. Where did the two people go to learn how to get in shape? The Seoul (capital of South Korea) Reebok Crossfit box of course. The two were trained how to do box-jumps, pull-ups, thrusters and rowing. They also had to complete a timed WOD, and at the end they were on the mat gasping for air.

It felt really special to watch that and to just marvel at how global Crossfit has become. Crossfit really speaks to what motivates and excites all of us.

Comment #59 - Posted by: Evan at June 28, 2011 5:44 AM

I managed 7 rounds, but I accidentally stopped my stopwatch halfway through, so I'm pretty sure it took me 20 minutes. I also added in 20 shadow uchi komi (like shadow boxing but for judo) with an inner tube for each round. I got some funny looks in the park for that.

Complete as many rounds in 20 minutes as you can of:
7 Handstand push-ups
12 L-Pull-ups

8rounds 2 HSPUs

Good workout
On the HSPUs I was able to get no less the 4reps to start. First round unbroken, the, like I said, 4 or more to start then what ever I cound get to finish, mostle singles.

Pullups good, I'd hit not less then 4 reps, but mostly 6 to start the fast singles and doubles.

On the HSPUs I'd hit cole to fatigue and have to rest for a bit befor I'd go again, but there was nothing I could do, fatigue is fatigue. I had 4 misses.

Crossfit: humbling mostly, exhilarating when you find that WOD you can Rx and even do sorta well. If you're new to this, up in years, or deconditioned (me: all 3 ;), take heart: sooner or later that Rx-and-sorta-well WOD will appear.

For me, it's 5 x (50m swim + 25 pushups) - http://www.crossfit.com/mt-archive2/007648.html, wfs

Did it first time in early June in 12:40, 3-ish weeks after knee surgery; and 11:04 today, both times with Games-style hand-release pushups. Felt *slow* today, so something is improving, if only my expectations / perception of fitness. Going to do this WOD as a warmup every month or so and get a sub-10 minute by the end of the year.

Gotta love a completely underused YMCA pool with adult swim 4 days a week in the early mornings.

Gym too crowded mid-morning, after swim/pushups, to punish self with HSPU and L-Pullups, so going back tonight to get humbled once again...

Regarding the video, it is clearly art not science or technique (and an ad). Consequently, it shouldn't appeal to everyone the same. I will never get to workout with the Finn, but today I got a glimpse of the intensity and drive. I am grateful for that. Inspiring stuff.

As Rx (on parallettes): 10 rnds + 7 HSPU + 3 L-pull-ups.

C/D: skipped.

Strict HSPU done on parallettes with head dipping four inches below palms; strict (no swing) L-pull-ups.

The L-pull-ups went faster towards the middle rounds, probabaly due to the lack of a warm-up. On the other hand, the HSPU just got slower. I was hoping for 14 rounds. Maybe next time.

WODorama...

9:30am - 5 x (50m swim + 25 pushups) - 11:04. Proud of that time; shaved over 1:30 in 3 weeks.

8pm -

w/u - static neck-shoulder, bar dislocates, cfwu x 1 (5's), 5x5 135#DL

w/o - AMRAP 20 mins 14 HSPU progressions (feet on 2nd rung from top of Smith bar, body probably 10-20 degrees off vertical) + 12 L-pullups

5 rounds + 14 HSPU progressions + 7 knee-tuck pullups

4 solid rounds of L-pullups, then knee-tuck pullups for rounds 5 and 6. But lots of singles and some doubles on L-pullups. Makes me think when I do 7x2 weighted pullups as part of warmup, every other week or so, I should make it 7x2 weighted L-pullups.

c/d - 30 air squats.

CFWU-2. From home. No Burgener or DU. Shortcut to get started with 4th of July day.
9 rounds even.
Alternated HSPU with chest to wall & traditional back to wall.
L PU very broken. Mostly 4's & 2's on later rounds. Tried to maintain pretty good L though.

5 rounds, 4 HSPUs.

Pullups weren't strict Ls. I had my knees bent due to lack of hip flexibility

I was happy that I did all HSPUs unbroken.. not the same for the L-Pullups.
My first 3 rounds were all unbroken, but then I started breaking the pullups into 8 +4 and then 6 + 4 + 2. Good bodywieght WOD. I was really thinking that I wanted to get 14 rounds and then I shifted to 12 and almost got that.

Comment #235 - Posted by: Anton at July 7, 2011 9:26 AM

8 rnds + 7 hspu. rxd.

L PU were 5-6 first part of rnd then 2 or 3.

HSPU wer 4-5 first then kipping to get off the ground.

Not a real HR raiser due to strength limits, but a good one to work on a weakness.

Got through 2 reps of tuck sit p/u's in rd. 6. All HSPU's unbroken w/ head touching floor. Tuck p/u's were horrible and took all my time.

I had a 150m run in between the pull up bar and the wall for hspu

Comment #248 - Posted by: Mark S. at August 2, 2011 3:36 PM

6 rounds + 4 hspu
no wall used.

At first I would start in a headstand and Kip up to a handstand. After the first 2 rounds I switched to doing a handstand then lowering to a headstand then kicking up again. Felt much more difficult that way so I stuck with it!
