"Nietzsche's influence remains substantial within and beyond philosophy, notably in existentialism, nihilism, and postmodernism. His style and radical questioning of the value and objectivity of truth have resulted in much commentary and interpretation, mostly in the continental tradition. His key ideas include the death of God, perspectivism, the Übermensch, the eternal recurrence, and the will to power. Central to his philosophy is the idea of “life-affirmation,” which involves an honest questioning of all doctrines that drain life's expansive energies, however socially prevalent those views might be.

Nietzsche began his career as a classical philologist before turning to philosophy. At the age of 24 he was appointed to the Chair of Classical Philology at the University of Basel (the youngest individual to have held this position), but resigned in 1879 due to health problems that plagued him most of his life. In 1889 he became mentally ill, possibly due to atypical general paralysis attributed to tertiary syphilis. He lived his remaining years in the care of his mother until her death in 1897, then under the care of his sister until his death in 1900."

-Interesting how such a brilliant man, who chose to attack the faith of others, has in his end, the assilium of mental illness, and the care of his mommy. How sad!

Funny how you use Gar's defense of his faith as an attack on him for having his faith. One could say L "interesting how the attack on his faith leads you to the delight in that attack."

People who believe must stand firm against the ignorance of those who don't and therefore must destroy that which they don't participate.

My two cents...

Looking forward to Nancy!!

Comment #15 - Posted by: Brian at June 15, 2011 8:32 PM

Feel free to have Miranda pictures up here daily, please.

Just wow.

Comment #16 - Posted by: William at June 15, 2011 8:33 PM

#14 Brian... Gar didn't defend his faith he attacked a man. A defense of his faith would have sounded something to the tune of "God is good." Not finding delight in referring to a sickly man being taken care of by his mother. Your bias has blinded you. If you are going to stand firm against ignorance make sure you've got something to stand on.

Anyhow... Go Bruins!! Unbelievable run.

Comment #22 - Posted by: CUZ at June 15, 2011 10:05 PM

L & adamk,

You assume that I take delight in the death of Mr. Nietzsche. He was a brilliant man, and I admire him for that.

To say God is good is not a defense of faith any more then it would be a defense of sight to say the sunsets in Maui are beautiful.

I also understand that not everyone has faith in YHWH. I am OK with that. I also understand that many of those who do not have faith, view those who do as being ignorant, or blind. Its like a man trying to explain to a man born blind, everything He clearly sees and observes in the world around Him. Until the blind man can see for Himself, its all just talk, especially when trying to explain color.

Its the same way on a spiritual level with those who have faith. Faith is sight given to the spiritually blind, by a Creator that has much about Himself to reveal to those who are willing to see. To the those who are content to grope around in darkness with the desires of their flesh, He leaves blind.

I know that I can see, and if any man desires to see what I see, I know where the light is, and I am willing to show it to as many that are willing to see it.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Gar at June 15, 2011 10:06 PM

I love the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" (Also sprach Zarathustra) is the best philosophic book that I have read. A very powerful vision of life.

As a believer I think it's annoying that some of you choose to have these silly conversations here. 1) I can't imagine a non-believer or believer changing their values that they base their life around because of what some knucklehead on a message board post. 2) We should be able to come here and discuss fitness without the fear of having our faith or lack of faith attacked. Thank you.

Comment #28 - Posted by: KML/m/6'/190 at June 16, 2011 12:04 AM

Looks to me like there have been several attacks against Gar and his comment, and I have yet to find in his post what he is quoted as saying or "celebrating". He only stated something that was an interesting point to him. Wether you agree with Gar and his beliefs or not, he is allowed to have his opinion (USA). He did not condemn Nietzsche for his views in his post. An end to any life like that I feel would be sad regardless of belief. Be strong in your faith.

Comment #29 - Posted by: Eric at June 16, 2011 1:18 AM

I've been a lurker on crossfit for the last few months. I'm now telling everyone I know about how amazing Crossfit is. I've been running to the park to do the WOD every lunchtime. Unfortunately the park doesn't have any sort of weights so I've had to ignore any workouts specifically involving weights, any suggestion for a good sub for the 95lb squat? Doing a lot more air squats, burpeees, box jumps, pistols? Cheers,

Comment #30 - Posted by: Brad at June 16, 2011 1:28 AM

I think we are all intelligent enough to discern the meaning from his sarcastic comment. If that was actually not a snide comment to suggest he got what he deserved, then I apologize for overreacting.

I am not interested in pursuing this or any faith discussion further, but as a somewhat frequent reader of the comments, I felt compelled to criticize what I saw as genuinely offensive.

@ Eric, dude...freedom of speech? what are you talking about? That includes freedom of criticism. He is allowed to have his opinion, and I am allowed to criticize it.

Funny how something as "personal" as faith brings out the self-righteous, pseudo-intellectuals foaming at the mouth who immediately have to shout down someone who does have faith. The comment was "how sad," no one ever said he got what he deserves. That would be hippocritical of someone who believes to wish ill on another. If you "read into it" thats just your insecurity.

As a believer AND political philosophy major who's read extensively of Nietzsche I agree he should be read more. However, Nietzche is also a philosopher who many read and misunderstand because they read the surface level and not the intent behind the writings. After all, the nazi's took Nietzsche as justification for their ideology... So be careful

Comment #35 - Posted by: Brian at June 16, 2011 4:21 AM

@ Brad.
It's difficult if you don't have weights, but props for tryin. I'd think you will have to add some shoulder to your suggested subs. Perhaps 10 Hand Stand Pushups followed by 30 air squats to sub for 15 OHS. Just a thought, but my shoulders are dead right now (finished an hour ago) so simple squats or burpees are not a good sub.

Brad I was in the same boat as you for almost a year, just used the rings and body weight WOD's. When I added weights I saw real gains within the first 2 weeks (my PR's were pathetic but I could do 50 pullups without a problem) Unfortunately some equipment is necessary, get them in there somehow even if it means working out before or after work.

Comment #40 - Posted by: DavisBenDavis at June 16, 2011 5:20 AM

Mike, thanks for the advice, unfortunately I picked it up after I got back, I ended up doing squats, burpees and box jumps, with a time of about 17 minutes. I'll try and do 50 HSPU some time tonight to make up for missing out. I think that I will get some weights, the problem is that I have to transport them the mile to the park and back again, I'm sure that it will just add to overall fitness.

I can safely say that crossfit has saved me from significant embarrassment at judo. My first session was an hours' randori (fighting), after which I went through about a box of ibuprofen over the weekend to recover. 2 months into crossfit and they still beat me most of the time, but my recovery times are amazing now.

"Nancy"

5 rounds for time of:
400 meter run
95 pound Overhead squat, 15 reps

time 18:27
Last time 17:18

I over ran rthe distance by15to 20 m each round. I mapped it wrong.

Aside from that it was good. First two rounds ok for me, I don't run fast, but for me I stayed pretty good, runs 3 and 4 were slow, quads got real tight, expecially the left one, run 5 I got over the pitty party and pushed into it.

OHSs unbroken ( at that time who couldnt get it unbroken) All squat good depth and hips all the way open. Not real fast, but solid and steady.

Personally I find juicing to have good benefits. Typically I juice in the evening, but sometimes in the morning as well. I include some apple, lemon, beats, carrots and if I am feeling a little juice crazy maybe some ginger. I'm no games level athlete but I'm sure more than a few of them have juiced before, it's more common than you may think, in fact I'm gonna go juice right now!

@ #46 Bill,

I think what you are really trying to ask is, "Is CFHQ going to be testing for Performance Enhancing Drugs at this years CF Games?" That is actually a question that I would like an answer to as well. If so, what PED's will they be testing for? What testing methods will they be using? Who will be administering these tests? And who will be in charge of delivering the results? Don't get me wrong, I am not accusing any CF Athlete of using PED's. I would just like to see CF start off on the right path and not end up like so many other sprts that I used to love.

@54 Tim,

As far as i'm aware they will be testing EVERY athlete at the games, just like last year. I think the tests are carried out by the world anti-doping agency (WADA). They also must be pretty strict as Ben Bergeron was disqualified for a positive test for drinking a varient of Red bull that can be bought over the counter!

FYI: This weeks ESPN Magazine had a short blurb about Crossfit. Couldn't find it online yet but the jist of it was that the Crossfit games is the best event money can buy for $50. Drew comparision to the lofty price of superbowl tickets, had quotes from last years champion Graham Holmberg, and laid out some of the details of the double Hell-in work out.

Take a look next time you see it in a stand, I think its the "Best in sports" issue, the cover is blue, cant remember what exactly is on it...

Great pic of Miranda, who was one of my L1 Coaches - way to go girl!

Cool vid - I have a dream. Nice! Keep it up mate!

Nancy: RX'ed
I normally would not "make excuses", but about 3 months ago I had my distal biceps tendon reattached, surgically. It completely ruptured doing a back lever. The Dr and PT have me on track for a full recovery in about 9-12 months post-surgery. The bicep / arm is still very weak and susceptible to re-tearing so cleaning anything more than the bar is pretty much out of the question. Therefore, I had to do Nancy from the rack. I know, totally not legit, but you have to do what you have to do.
My last attempt at Nancy was 18:45.
This time I did in 17:13. A PR, which I am stoked about. What I am not stoked about is that into round 4 of the OHS's I got wobbly and rather than risking anything with the arm, I just moved and dropped the weight. Shit. Now I have to get the weight back to the rack, fast. I had to deload the bar, move the bar to the rack, and re-load it, and I still PR'ed. I love CrossFit!

On the whole I think the sport is clean however you ocassionally see athletes looking like the situation from Jersey Shore and you have got to wonder.

There are 4 athletes who are in the top ten at the moment that I have my doubts about but I wont name them.

Mikko Salo is not one of them because I have met Mikko and he definately looks natural.

Question about overhead squats. I've only been xfit'ING for a few weeks, but whenever I do OH squats my hands/area around my thumb and wrist start hurting. Is it something that can be fixed, or do I just have to get used to it?

To #104 (pkouret) - your problem might be with flexibility as that is often the case with overhead squats. If your grip is very wide, the angle between your wrist and the bar is less than a more narrow grip which puts a lot of pressure on your wrist until it strengthens. Work on your shoulder flexibility to be able to narrow your grip and keep the bar midline. Burgener warm up every day will definitely help.

No measurable running track, so I substituted:

I scaled OHS to 55 lbs, but after 2 sets it was costing my form, so I reduced it to 45 lbs.

I think this was my time.. I did this a few days ago.. good fun WOD... I should do this more often... I took it a litle easy on the run becuase I wanted to do all OHS unbroken and I did. I did the runs on a treadmill at about 8.6 mph. Usually I max out the machine at 10 mph and even that isn't that fast, but I wanted to be able to just go into the OHS, from the ground and go unbroken. I know I can shave a bunch of time off if I did this more often. Because I was pretty good at running when I started, I never really do it, so my runs have gone down and my other stuff has improved... time to bring back some running into the WODs for me.

Little disapp w/time. First time doing from home though. So had real 400 today. Didn't push hard enough on uphill portion of run in later rounds. Good job down hill though.
OHS not real good snatching. Missed a few esp on first round. That & dropping on 14th rep on 4th round kept me from getting sub 16. OHS unbroken otherwise.

Rx'd 35 min, runs on treadmill

Not the best time, but last time around I didn't even time it because I didn't feel all that comfortable with the OHS movement yet. Taking the week completely off last week I'm sure didn't help either.

OHS were all broken 10-5 and 9-6 on last round, but I felt more steady than ever on these. Instead of feeling it in my wrists because of the extra wide grip, my shoulders felt flexible enough to get down to a full squat with a much closer grip while still having the bar at or behind the center of gravity. I have to credit this increased shoulder flexibility to the shoulder stretches from a recent Kelly Starret video in the Journal that I have worked into my warmup. Instead, I'm feeling it my back and legs which is how it should be.

Have to start working on loading more weight on these movements now. Either way, it felt like a little breakthrough today.

Runs down the street and OHS in the driveway, just like last time. Was shooting for 2:30 per round, and was on that pace for awhile, but rounds 3 and 4 were tougher - the OHS didn't go as smoothly. Tried to relax and recover a bit on runs, they were ~120s, except for first round (95s). Ran in the Filas - feet were a little tired after, but calf held up okay. I like Nancy, but b/c the OHS are light, you don't get any chance to rest during this - the whole thing is go time.
