A good sub for a 50 meter swim would be a 200 meter row. If you dont have a rower, KB swings would work well.

LETS GOOO! Great to swimming included in a WOD! NOW Crossfit is Forging Elite Fitness!!

Wkend WOD - 30mile hike on Appalachian trail w 45lb pack. Total hiking time 14h45m. Ran last 2 miles w no pack up and down Springer Mtn, GA. 14:00 up, 9:30 down!! Best part is legs still feel great!!

Death by ring dips today: 14 full rounds

I'm with Brent. Why do you NEED a box to get a workout? They're just making you do pushups along with it, it's not like you need to bring some barbells plus a kettlebell, squat rack, and the GHD with you

Just find the nearest pool, lake, ocean...

"Just find the nearest pool, lake, ocean..." So I can either buy a membership to the Y, get a pool in my backyard (in the next 24 hours), drive to an ocean (from Indiana), swim in the flooded Wabash River, or swim in the neighborhood retention pond...what to choose...

Most places that have lap pools have drop in rates of only a few bucks! No excuses!

Can't wait to do this WOD and kick its little Rx rear cuz a) rehabbing/weak/semi-swollen right knee won't kill me in water, b) I can swim, sorta fast for 50 meters anyway, and do 25 pushups after it, and c) the Y, my gym, has a 20-25 meter pool with lots of early AM adult lap hours. Now I just need to get the physician's asst. Wednesday to tell me I can swim that day or Thursday, 7-8 days after arthro knee surgery.

i am all for swimming... but are we trained to coach swimming. this is kind of like running, we just assume people know how... but there is a proper form and technique that should be learned before we just throw people into the water IMHO. also, be careful with the recommending people to run down to the river or lake. if you get tired or cramp in a pool then you stand on bottom or swim a few feet to the side. if this happens in a river or lake or ocean you will drown. WOD hard, but WOD smart and safe everyone.

I love the Swim / Push-up combo!
I sometimes do a 100m / 20 push-up variation with up to 7 rounds. Push-ups become ridiculously challenging by doubling the distance on the swim.
(100m swim is a standard sub for a 400m run.) I look forward to this sprint variation. Thanks HQ!

Remember that most pools in the US are 25 yards long and not 50 meters. Arden Hills swimming team trains in a 50 meter pool. Most globo or YMCA pools are 25 yards long. Just an FYI.

Its nice to feel you dont need a box for a workout, unless you are the owner of a box. By the way, how many have pools? How many people signed up at a CrossFit gym so they didnt have to go to the Y or other facilities? What if you cant swim?

Would love to "just find a river, lake or stream", but in Michigan, finding enough sun to do so is tough. It's also rained almost every day for the past three weeks.

Are there any police officers that had to find another job after rehabbing a serious injury? I lost my job due to complications from ACL/Meniscus surgery (I took too long to find that "edge", and I was on probation as a rookie). I have a job interview Wednesday, and even though my knee is back to almost full strength, I'm looking for ways to positively put that across in the oral board. If anybody has any tips, I would appreciate it!

Great WOD. I swam competitively for 10 years and we did this workout called snakes, where you swim 25meters, jump out, do 5 pushups, dive in the next lane, swim 25m, jump out, do 5 pushups, etc. in each of the 6 lanes of the pool (like a slithering snake). We'd do it a couple times and considered it a fun workout since pushups were a nice break from the endless laps we usually did.

Unfortunately there are no good places to swim here in Inner Mongolia, China, so I'm gonna need a sub..

This has got to be the worst travel advice ever. I traveled around the world with a carry on. Checking suitcases is stupid unless you have gear you can't rent at your destination or are moving. Ziplock bags for lotions? Save the checked bag fee and buy it there. Use packing folders (eg, eagle creek) to save more room than rolling. Roll only what you need to between rails on your luggage. Use dry cleaning on the road. And leave the hair gel at home- use the space to pack a jump rope or some kb's.

i wonder how many people will swim with their board shorts.... I know one general rule for swimming is that if you can then do 3x the distance as a running. not sure what science has determined this, but this is how we looked at it when i was on a swim team.

Fantastic stuff, because of joint pain and a lot of body mass (me), I've been programing a lot of swimming wod's for a client and myself lately. We commonly do 25 Yards + 15 to 25 push-up Rounds. This will be a fantastic thing to incorporate into the community as whole.

As well, given all the Seal-fit, and swim proofing kids talk on the main site, does anyone else think that we'll see a swimming Wod in this years games????

Quite frankly, the globo with it's pool is my competition. As a gym owner, why would I have ANY interest is sending them down there to figure out that they need a pool membership. Swimming, as good as it is, will not be built into my wods until there's free swimming nearby...sorry.

I like the bear crawl sub.
Swimming is one form of locomotion that is largely upper body/core dominant. Bear crawl is too.
Running & Rowing are just too different from swimming.

Wow. A lot of complaining that CFers have no access or no membership or the lake is too cold or is flooded. Lame! Called a couple of local globo gyms to get a 1 day pass and one was $10 and the other $20. I paid that at a Crossfit box on my last vacation to WOD. If you want to get better and have constantly varied workouts then this is it.

In running CFE swim seminars it has been a long wait for a WOD like this to come up. Please post videos so chris and I can see the Crossfitter trying to hold their mid-line stability on a horizontal plane in water without breaking down as well as establishing a vertical forearm on the front catch.

Now this is the workout I have been waiting for. It is not like it is a 100m or 200m swim.

Don't sub, find a pool, ocean, river, lake. If you are not a strong swimmer, don't go alone.

It is not like you showed up your first day and did a sub-4 minute Fran.

Learn to work on your weakness.

Definitely like the workout cause I live on a lake--but not everyone does. So what's next? Bike 1km? Downhill ski 1000 vertical? You get the picture. I think the box owners are gunna be bored tomorrow (if they run main site WODs).


Make this workout (if done in the future) a Cindy/Mary type WOD where it always appears with something else.

The CF programming lately has made me regret paying for this month's box membership... I'm having a hard time remembering the last time hallmarks came up, but it seems like every other day is swimming or burpee muscle-ups or something like that. It feels like whoever is behind the curtain is trying too hard to be complex/difficult and neglecting a good portion of what drew people to join up in the first place.

In the NW we have a ton of city pools for $3-$5 last time I went. Running vs swimming is probably your best sub @4x distance. Should be similar in time domain too. Rivers here are hi 40's and near flood stage so would not recommend that for novice swimmer unless you have a 4mil or > wetsuit and stay parallel to shore with a buddy and go up stream. Glad to see swimming in a WOD. If you don't have water near by you should look for new place to live :-)

guys, stop whinging, if you dont want to swim or if you can't, then don't. no ones making you, but for all of you making excuses, just remember that when the games come around. anything goes. and i know most boxes don't have a pool, tough. my gym at home doesn't have olympics barbells, bumpers, rings or a GHD. but i can sure as hell go down to the local pool and pay 5 dollars for a swim, and its bloody worth it. what was it Glassman said? it doesnt matter if you are a seasoned crossfitter, if you train at reebok one or at home, there will always be a teenager who can come out of nowhere and win the games. and this swimming is what makes crossfit unpredictable. just go with it.

i couldnt do a lot of stuff when i started. i couldnt do kipping pullups, muscle ups, double unders, etc etc. does that mean i should turn my back on these skills? no, it meant time to learn, to work. it meant i had to suck at these movements for a while as i gained competency. the same goes for swimming. stop whining and become a more well rounded athlete. isnt that what crossfit is about?

That wasn't bad at all. I'm a lousy swimmer but good at bodyweight exercises. The (slow) swimming in cool water helped to recover between the sets of push ups.

25m pool. All 50s were sub-:40. I did wear a drag suit. Pushups got really difficult around third set.

FWIW I do a Stew Smith workout every couple of weeks that's similar but has a longer swim component. I actually think that's a bit easier as you get more rest between the pushups.

~75% of the Earth is covered by water people. More coming soon if the hippies are right. Get your swimming figured out ;)

12:36 as Rx'd.... wow! i figured this would be ~7-8mins. Planned a nice 1 min pace on the 50's and bang out the pushups in about 30-45 sec per round. Was i ever wrong! The swim certainly made the pushups hard!

For those complaining about swimming/subs/etc. This is crossfit, any task any time, specialize in not specializing right? So find your "SISU" and hit the pool. I am not a swimmer, I am more of an anchor at #240 so as far as I can see it, no one should be complaining. If you don’t know how to swim, wear a life jacket, or a floatation belt, and pull yourself through the water at least…If you don't know how to do pushups, get back to the couch and crack another bag of doritos. That’s my two cents! Get Some!

ISR Inquiry

Is CrossFit going to start offering these courses..I called ISR a couple of weeks ago and they said they were in contact with CrossFit so they can offer a special CF rate if not the tuiton cost was over $12,000 to get certified.

I really believe in the program and want to be certified but there's no way I could pay that much money.

Anyone have any new information on this?

#55, I'd have to respectfully disagree (in my case anyway) I was attracted to Crossfit for the variety and the fact that it's such a complete program. I can see how people could be miffed at paying for a place to train and not getting the value for the cost. But for the 4 years or so that I've been Crossfitting, it's always been this varied. I dig it and I hope that Central doesn't simply stick to a set group of WODs.

kind of ironic that i'm learning to swim in the 115* desert of Kuwait...but, i spent about an hour getting pointers from a lifeguard at the pool. apparently i wasn't breathing while trying to swim, so with a floaty thing between my legs, paddles on my hands and about 20 or so laps later, i decided to take the training wheels off and try the wod. my goal was sub 30: and i'd be happy as a clam.

kuwait measures differently than the rest of the world, or maybe it's just army measurements...

I loved this.
Was going to be a rest day, a well-needed rest day, but when HQ puts up swimming... haha.

So as RX'ed 14:37.
The swimming was ok, slow, but I'm just a pretty slow and efficient swimmer at the beginning of the summer. The push-ups were killer on me. Did Wilmot yesterday, yikes. Also I had to favor the right arm; still recovering from a distal biceps tear in the left - 12.5 weeks out from surgery. Swimming is one of the upper body things I CAN do.

For those w/o water - in the states there are always local swimming clubs with an inexpensive drop in rate or you have got to know a friend who has a pool at their house or in their subdivision. Variability.

~75% of the Earth is covered by water people. More coming soon if the hippies are right. Get your swimming figured out ;)

Great change of pace...25 yard pool so swam 50 yards instead of meters. Push ups smoked my shoulders so that slowed the pace some - 11:16.

This was by far the hardest WOD I have ever done because I don't know how to swim. I hate cherry picking between wods though so I attempted it with a doggie paddle/fake swim. Haha I felt like I was drowning the whole time, and I probably looked like I was too!

My kids, now 7 and 4, have been in ISR longer than I have been Crossfit. ISR is an amazing program. My kids have a healthy respect for the water, and although nothing subs for parent/adult supervision, I am confident that they can get themselves out of or call for help if they have an issue in water. They LOVE swimming like they do Crossfit and gymnastics.

This was an EXCELLLENT excuse to hit up the public pool in my area. Been Crossfitting for around 8-10 weeks now and was AMPED to finally see Swimming thrown in a WOD. This one was KILLER, I haven't ever been a great swimmer and this workout was an excellent reminder that it's something I need to work on.

[broken record ON] Does the "infant swimming" aspect of today hint at a Crossfit Reebok 2011 Games event?

Possible event:
(1) Swim the length of an "Odyssey Custom Made PORTABLE Pool", 80ft x 130ft, 60in deep
(2) Recover 35# "baby" weight at bottom of pool
(3) Swim back while carrying the baby weight
(4) Place baby weight on pool edge
(5) Repeat for remaining weights
(6) Climb out of pool after placing third, forth or fifth weight on pool edge
(7) perform monitored CPR on child-sized or man-sized CPR mannequin for X-minutes or Y-compressions.

Perhaps the weights recovered from the bottom of the pool are 35#, 45#, 55#, etc?

Recall that Coach Glassman point blank mentions a pool as a possibility during the 2011 Games. The mention occurs during an audience member filmed video during the 2010 CrossFit Endurance Sports & Fitness Expo "Exec Panel"

I haven't swam laps for 30+years. Don't really like swimming laps. But that's the Rx for the day so I packed my swim suit (no longer speedo!) and got 'er done. Didn't time it but ~10 minutes at 5 rounds. I did 6 rounds because I misremembered. The last round of pushups was killer. Great WOD - I'd do it again in a heartbeat - may even schedule it up myself. swimming is good. i am not a swimmer at all, but i know that it is a challenging excercize. to the box owners complaining... if you are not able to write your own programming for a day, then that is a problem... this WOD could be great for your box. Write your own program for today, then set this up with your local pool/globo/public lake/whatever. Make it a saturday am wod, bring banners and a tent, do it in the most public place possible. you may actually pick up some clients. I visit a box by the beach, and they regularly do WODs on the beach for this reason... it turns heads and raises awareness. trust me, when you have even a few people doing surf burpees (a burpee in shallow surf from the ocean) you get noticed. same would go for this WOD. I just dont think that because your box follows mainsite means that you cant switch it up and make a splash (literally) in your local community

This WOD was AWESOME! An instant Favorite.

As soon as I saw the swim I began to think of substitutes. Row,SDHP, but then I saw the WOD demo video and knew I had to find a way to swim 50m. There is a small pool in a hotel the next town over, but we have a lake 3 miles away. We decided we would swim the lake no matter what the temp. (Ohio). Jumped in after work and it was chilly but bearable. Id estimate it mid to high 70's.

Arms are pretty much dead now. I highly recommend to find a way to swim this one, get into a lake if you have to, its worth it.

Tore some rib muscles between a week of insane coughing spells and a killer ab workout last week and the pain is still too great for push ups (which sucks because that's one of few things I don't have to modify... lol), so sub'd w bench press. I think my biggest problem is breath control. Taking a breath on every third stroke of the front crawl instead of the second is brutal. I'd have probably had a better time if I'd done a breath every second stroke and switched up which side I turned my head on each length. Instead I ended up gasping for breath about three-quarters of the way across the pool.

I need to swim more often.

There are THOUSANDS of videos on youtube teaching stroke technique. Grab a snokle and swim if breathing is your problem. We just a had a adult mother DROWN trying to save her 5 year old in AZ. Stop with excuses swimming is something everyone should know how to do. If you have kids make them do stroke technique or swim team till they are 12 at least. Then they won't be adults that can't swim. (doesn't have to be ISR either...whats up with all the promoting other companies??)

Our pool not opended yet on the Barracks, managed to improvise.

Used a rehab stretchy band over a bannister railing, dropped into squat position and mimicked the front crawl movement with resistance band, did 50 strokes per side alternating (total of 100 strokes, got some funny looks) Did clap push ups for added difficulty.

Fun WOD. I was really trying to swim relaxed - the lifeguard was already given me a strange look from the pushups, so I didn't want her to think I was struggling and try to prematurely end my WOD. Splits were all around a minute - first and last were a bit faster. Only the first round of push-ups unbroken.

I warmed up on the elliptical machine for 4 minutes. Then I did the low ab isometrics, Plutchok ab exercises, and arm/raises. I did 1 round of the CFWU plus light push-ups. I did assisted pull-ups at 55 lbs. I did TRX OH squats and the TRX Y, T, and reverse Ys.

I modified this workout from a 50 m swim to a 250 m row and I did 20 push-ups each round (with the perfect push-up).

I finished in 17:10.

fought the urge to add another movement to the mix, cuz I wanted a benchmark for this WO.
Both got more difficult w/each successive set (no... duh!!!). Had to split the PUs from second set on, to the point where by last set I was only mustering 3-5 at a time. Good workout. One of the other dads at the pool was like..."You're done already???" between sips of his vodka & cranberry. I just swigged my cranberry, yogurt & creatine with the satisfaction of having completed another great WOD, while doing the right thing for my TotHS (1Cor6:19-20).

I think the folks recommending that the swim be done in a river or lake might be a bit too enthusiastic. I don't know where those guys live, but here in the Pacific NW we've had record precipitation and the rivers are running high and fast due to excessive runoff. And the water is a few degrees above freezing. And you'd need an insulated wet suit to swim in the lakes around here. Use a little common sense.

Did this at Cudell rec in a pool with about 30 kids during open swim...I swam back and forth 3 times sideways not the length of the pool for one 50 was a cool workout...didn't get as many weird looks as I thought I would

Did this one 6.7.2011, after arthro-punctures were healed / watertight.

12:40 as Rx'd in 23-meter pool (did 2-2-2-2-3 laps to get to 253 meters), with Games-standards hand-release pushups for 90% of the reps.

Pumped to be under 13 mins, within 2:30 of Michael G's time, and finally identify something I can legitimately count as a strength in Crossfit: swimming short-sprint distances. I won't win any medals, but based on today's workout, I can crank out 25-45 second 50 meter 'reps' for a while. Flip turn was even in the house, which was a pleasant surprise.

Pushups were the weakness after round 2: sets of 3-5 with air-suck in between; and, from round 4 on, fairly serious midline breakdown leading to swayback / snaking. Work to do there.

Pretty sure I can get this to 12 flat by end of summer if I hit pushups hard, swim once in a while (maybe sub for running or rowing on run/row-only workouts??), do this WOD a couple more times. I think I can get this into the 11:30 range by end of year.

Pool at Y = uncrowded early in AM.

Did this WOD yesterday (6/8/11). Pushups were definately limiting factor, but definately felt it in my upper core during the swim.

was scrolling through the workouts because today is a off day and decided to try this one out. defiently feel it in the arms and upper core alittle, i did my own core workout after.
