Wow! This is gonna hurt. I did the 7X2 thrusters today and think I pulled my trap muscles a little bit. I did hit a PR though so that was cool. We'll see how it goes, 3..2..1..Go!

Comment #1 - Posted by: Greg Hayes at May 18, 2011 5:05 PM

From the video it looks like as Rx'd would be pull ups without kipping; is that accurate?

Comment #2 - Posted by: Scooter/M/6'/200# at May 18, 2011 5:14 PM

Ref, "The Photo", I'm having to wash my eyes out with acid all over again after seeing the picture again, but I still think it is one of the greatest pictures ever. Gotta admit, I liked the one with the beautiful woman better!!

Comment #3 - Posted by: Milt at May 18, 2011 5:42 PM

Does the grip direction on these matter, or is it just "get your chin above the bar"?

Comment #4 - Posted by: Guest at May 18, 2011 5:56 PM

After watching the WOD demo, I guess these aren't strict pullups.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Crossfit Chris at May 18, 2011 6:26 PM

Can you kip these? @Crossfit Chris: you say they aren't strict but I wouldn't call that kipping either.

Comment #6 - Posted by: jimmy at May 18, 2011 6:51 PM

It's a strength WOD with a gymnastic dynamic. Use any grip you choose just get your chin over the bar.

Kipping is not recommended

Comment #7 - Posted by: mike at May 18, 2011 7:27 PM

try it both ways. try different ways to hold the weight too, like weight vest, belt, dumbbell in feet. suprising how much a difference each of these things can make.

my best was kipping with weight vest and narrow overhand grip.... 100 pounds!

worst was was dead hang, underhand grip, with dumbbell between legs... only 40.

Comment #8 - Posted by: anc at May 18, 2011 7:38 PM

What date were both the photos (the girl and the guy) posted? I don't remember these at all...

Brent doesn't even have protection in. It was a sweet lead! He's in Alaska right now getting ready to throw down on some big routes.

Alot harder than we anticipated it would be today .. altho most of these CF workouts seem to be much worse in Afghanistan at 7,500 ASL.

Keep it heavy today!

Comment #12 - Posted by: Zack at May 18, 2011 10:36 PM

Also, all pullups were 100% strict, no kip, palms facing away. Might have to go back later today and see what I can get if I tried kipping.

There I was, struggling with tying metal plates to a rope around my waist and my husband walks in and asks why I don't just use a backpack.....

Obviously I married him for his brains.... because I seem to lose mine now and then.

bodyweight 178lbs

5-10-15-20-25-30-35

(last time I did weighted pullups, 7 X 1 rep and got to 25#)

Then I did a pullup ladder and got up to 8 unbroken.

Daily total... 50

So my pullups ARE improving a lot by doing 40 a day. The only worry now is that we're doing a cross-country move in one week and the pullup rack is going to be dismantled this weekend. Then we don't get into our new house until June 10. I suppose I'll have to find tree branches and playgrounds to keep improving.

I changed this WOD for two reasons:
1. I cannot do regular pull ups unassisted so there is no way I can do weighted.
2. I missed my 81 burpees yesterday due to being sick, so today I had to make them up and also do 82 for today. Which means I had to do a total of 163 burpees.

The workout I did looked like this:
16 rounds of 10 burpees and 2 (slightly assisted) pull ups.
Started each round every 2 minutes, so the total time was 32 minutes. I did 3 extra burpees in the first round to reach 163 burpees total and 32 pull ups. It was actually pretty fun!

All dead-hang, mixed grip, chin solidly over bar for both reps and each with a brief pause at the top. Used the belt w/chain and plates, which is vastly preferable to trying to hold a heavy DB with your feet, which is what I usually have to do for weighted pulls. This is one workout where it really helps to have short levers!

Warmup: played with ring moves I just learned - skin the cat and front lever progressions, 5 rounds of these along with 20 DUs, bear crawl 50 feet each round.

Buy in: 20 min. AMRAP 50 DUs, 5 HSPU (assistance bands), 10 ring dips, 15 push ups. 3 rounds plus 50 DUs, then finished round 4 out of time.

Skipped pullup WOD, upper back still tight from injury on max thruster day. Went to friend's house and helped move landcaping rocks instead.

50-60lb per stone
Carry 100 yards downhill on muddy trail
Run back up hill & repeat

30 stones in ~45 minutes

Good tiring work.

Weight hanging from belt. Hands or bar touching shoulders height until 50# set....chin over bar for all sets 50# and later.

No kipping, no momentum. One second dead hang before first and second reps.

First WOD I've been able to due since lumbar spine surgery! Easy on the low back with no ballistic movement.

Pull ups are my nemesis.
Used my IBA.
1.Front plate
2.Front and back
3.Front back and sides
4.Front back, sides and assault pack with 12 pk water. (got the first, missed the second).
5.FBSS
6.FBSS
7.FBSS + pack again (failed)
8.FBSS

Didn't feel like it was able to do enough. Continued on to do 7 sets of 5 unweighted pull ups, then Dips. 6 rounds of 5, the first three with body armor (including FBSS).

As Rx:
Set 1: 20 lbs x 6
Set 2: 30 lbs x 2
Set 3: 40 lbs x 2
Set 4: 50 lbs x 2
Set 5: 60 lbs x 2
Set 6: 70 lbs x 2
Set 7: 75 lbs x 2 (might not have gotten fully over the bar on the second)
Set 8: 70 lbs x 2
took about 3 minutes then jumped up and did an explosive 10 chest to bar pullups.

Took about 6-8 minutes rest and stretched out then did:
5 rounds of: (did these in about 7:30)
row 250 meters hard (about 1:51 pace)
followed by 20 pushups

This was a gaser and I felt it in my whole body as my back was a little tired after the WOD and I wanted to attack my MetCon as well as pushing movements since I haven't done that in a while.

Comment #204 - Posted by: Anton at May 20, 2011 8:44 AM

I forgot to log in that my WOD was all done from a dead hang and all STRICT pullups. I wanted to focus on a dead hang and an explosive pull. I didn't go too wide on my grip and other than fatigue, my grip felt it after about 60 lbs.
I did this on a split bar, so when I cleared the bar I was a bit over my grip height. I like the deeper pull you seem to get and it feels better on my wrists as well.

20-30-40-50-45-40-40# - First WOD since spine surgery. This one was easy on my back.

Strict dead hang pullups. No kipping or kicking. First three rounds had bar touching shoulders; next two had chin over bar. Next round rounds had bar touching shoulders again. One second hang before each rep using a weight belt.

WOD #96 - Done on 5/23. When we last did weighted pullups I was only able to get one bodyweight rep. I failed on two others and had to do assisted pullups for the remaining sets. This time, I was hoping to get one of two sets of bodyweight and do the rest assisted. I was able to do all seven sets at my bodyweight of 256. I'll be darned, this stuff might just work!

This WOD is great. Makes me wonder if I can convert my '40 pullups a day' routine (to build old-man strength ;) to '40 weighted pullups a day.' Think I'll give that a shot starting Memorial Day, in honor of our heroes.

Did this WOD 5.23 as part of warmup on 1st full day back in gym after arthro knee surgery on 5.18:

10-16-24-30-40-30-38

[Then did subbed DU=snatch workout]

Cooldown: Tabata pullups unweighted (score: 3), 27 total...

Not bad. Good job getting chin over bar, keeping core tight.

When I look on BeyondTheWhiteBoard, almost everyone logs only the additional weight, and not their body weight as the weight being used for the total score.

*Why is that*?

To me it seems it would make more sense to add the two. If my BW is 190lbs and I hang 50lbs around my waist, I'm effectively pulling 240lbs, right?
