Handstand walks? They must think we're pro gymastics in here lol. I think some pushups for substitutes are in order.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Aaron at May 14, 2011 6:23 PM

Anyone have a good substitution if you cannot do a handstand walk?

Comment #9 - Posted by: Scott Cross at May 14, 2011 6:51 PM

Hey, where are those really, really handy video's of someone doing the WOD?? Those absolutely helped by the way. I live way up North and do workouts alone in my gym. Thanks anyway!!!

Comment #10 - Posted by: KevinW at May 14, 2011 7:21 PM

Is the "Glute-ham sit-ups" the same as GHD? Yes they are situps done on the GHD.

Comment #11 - Posted by: KevinW at May 14, 2011 7:22 PM

If I can't handstand walk around, would propping up against a wall and alternating back and forth on my hands achieve the same effect? Or is there a better substitute to build handstand strength?

Comment #12 - Posted by: Major at May 14, 2011 7:34 PM

Progressions for handstand walking include, while handstanding against wall:
* shoulder taps: raise hand and touch same shoulder, alternate hands
* walking side to side

Best if done in a belly-to-wall handstand pose

Handstand walking requires you to compromise good handstand posture -- you have to pull yourself backward with your hips, so you have to arch your back. If you're training good handstand posture, it might be better to do a belly-to-wall handstand and slap your thigh or pocket with one hand at a time, alternating hands.

Having car trouble Heather?

Comment #14 - Posted by: Brennan at May 14, 2011 8:00 PM

Looks like the set-up for "Wash Heather's Car".

A rare AMRAN (as many reps as needed) WOD.
Wet sponge
Scrub car

I'm sure Heather will be watching to make sure each rep is done properly and that the full body of the car is reached. :-)

Lol, I would have to sub all exercises to be able to do todays WOD.
I can't do handstand walks, don't have weights to do the squats and I don't have the equipment for the glute-ham sit-ups.
But I'll run 6k instead... or can I sub all the exercises? :)I'll run anyway, but I could actually do both if anyone has a good opinion on what I could sub the exercises with.

14:32...had to scale down the front Squats to 75 pounds, which was still a bit heavy for my current level. Killed the handstand walks! I did them under 10 seconds, and the GHD sit ups were pretty nasty, first time doing them.

Excellent and fun workout

35:45 as Rx'd.

Probably spent 30 mins on the handstand walks, getting anywhere from 10 inches to 6 feet at a time, but I did it.

Slow time, but very pleased to be able to have done this as Rx'd. Been working unsupported handstands for about a month or two, but as Kirez Reynolds @13 pointed out, handstand walks require a different posture than regular unsupported handstands. But I'm thrilled to be able to work a new skill that I didn't have just a few months ago.

Performed as Rx'd...with an exception:
- Front Squats @ 135#; rounds 1 & 2, unbroken; round 3, 15+6.
- Handstand walk 40+ feet; a very good challenge, following Front Squats...good one HQ!
- 15 HGD Sit-Ups (Curl Ups)+ 15 HGD Sit-Ups with Hip Flexion; 30 total.

Oh. Because I did this WOD at a YMCA, I stopped my watch after completing the Front Squats and Handstand walk, in order to walk to the other side of the gym...through double-doors, and do the HGD Sit-Ups. Nevertheless, I started the time a second or two before arriving at the HGD; I also stopped the time on my watch, after completing the HGD Sit-Up movements, in order to walk back to the other side for Front Squats and Handstand walks. I, again, started the time a second or two before arriving at the squat cage.

I enjoyed this WOD...keep 'em coming HQ, so I can set it off!!

Sunday musings (from Chicago)...

1) Golf. "The game of golf is good for the soul. You become so angry with yourself that you forget to hate your enemies."

2) Old friends. Yup...more stuff on friendship. I've oft stated that men do a very poor job of making friends after the age of 30. Exceptions are small start-ups, military, professional sports and the like. Because we add to our friends list so sparingly it's all the more important that we always seize the opportunity to be with old friends. So it was for Mrs. bingo and me this weekend.

It's been so very long since I've laughed so freely and so often. So long since all of the layers of the roles we play each day peeled away and that rarest of creatures, who we really are, surfaced. The good news is that the friendships endure the distance and the time.

The bad news is that there is so much distance and time.

3) Manufactured importance. Got any of this in your life? Not sure? Of course you're not sure. It's likely that YOU are the one who manufactured whatever it is in the first place.

We have a massive social media initiative at my day job. Lots and lots of positive feedback from others in my industry (who are too far away to compete with us), and yet that's all it's been...compliments. ROI, meh, not so much. And yet there it is, an enormous sink hole of time, and more importantly MY time. But is it really important?

Where are your stress points? Who put them there? Who is rating their importance? How real is that importance? Tough questions, whether you have ultimate control over the majority of your choices and your time or not. I kinda do. Have control, that is. Yet it was pointed out to me what an inordinate amount of time and angst, how much importance, has grown up around this SM thing. The program is an outgrowth of our continual need to grow, sure, but is this the program that will allow us to achieve our goals, and more importantly, is it really important enough for and to me personally to carry the load?

Not sure, but the the "ah HA" moment when the concept of "manufactured" rather than essential, integral, irreducible and ineluctable, was applied. I'm gonna think a (short) bit on this on the plane; if it's real I should be able to make the call between Chicago and Cleveland. It's a great exercise, a great filter to apply to the "important" (non-family) aspects of a life.

Whadday think? Looking at the time sinks in your life, how important are they and is that importance real?

I'll see you next week...

I had forgotten how good dot com makes it burn. The combinations are just nasty! FS to HS walk was easy round 1, but once the back got tighter, it was murder!

If I'm not the first I will be one of the few to complain that the Open didn't have enough gymnastics! I didn't grow up doing it either, I just love it.

The back patio was the perfect setup for this, with the barbell at one end and the roman chair at the other. Front squats and GHDs unbroken - legs were burning by the end of both. Handstand walks getting better, but still tough, particularly after GHDs.
