I need a recommendation for the appropriate weight for a woman. 35 pounds?

Comment #3 - Posted by: Kristina at April 29, 2011 5:22 PM

Sick picture!!!

Comment #4 - Posted by: Alex Europa at April 29, 2011 5:29 PM

@kristina 45lbs is appropriate for a woman. but if you feel you cant do that weight then you can scale it to how much you can do.

Comment #5 - Posted by: steve bray at April 29, 2011 5:34 PM

Beautiful spot!

Colleen and I have been on the Wapta several times...summer and winter. The last time I was up there I had a little "frozen toe" episode...it can be a committing spot, but always beautiful.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Rene Forestier at April 29, 2011 5:36 PM

This is a pic taken coming down after we summited Saint Nicholas on a Thanksgiving weekend where we spent approx 15 hours a day for 4 straight days climbing a bunch of stuff along the Icefields Parkway.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Tim Banfield at April 29, 2011 5:42 PM

FYI, from CF Journal #27, "The New Girls":

"Jackie"
For time:
Row 1,000 meters
Thruster 45 pounds, 50 reps
30 Pull-ups

Not everyone has a rower, but "Jackie" is reason enough to buy one. A second round at 500/25/15 and a third at 250/15/10 make for a perfect workout.
-----------
Although I had to scale with jumping pull-ups, I really enjoyed doing the "Super Jackie" version because, like the above excerpt says, it felt like a perfect workout. Also, I was playing the original "Metal Gear Solid" game at the time and wanted to do the same workout that Solid Snake would probably do.

Comment #8 - Posted by: J.T. at April 29, 2011 5:44 PM

Was wondering about how many up right rows would it take to get the effect of a 1000 meter row?

Comment #9 - Posted by: Mac at April 29, 2011 5:44 PM

Nice, Tim!

I hope you had enough time for a big feast and maybe some Scotch at the Bow Hut.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Rene Forestier at April 29, 2011 5:47 PM

Mac, you should consider kettle bell or dumbbell swings as a replacement. Upright rows seem like they are more of a strength builder than a cardio workout.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Sean at April 29, 2011 6:04 PM

@ mac or a sumo deadlift high pull

Comment #12 - Posted by: steve bray at April 29, 2011 6:05 PM

Mac, you should do sumo deadlift high pulls with a 45 pound bar if anything, since it comes the closest to mimicking the movement of rowing. You aught to do 1 for every 10 prescribed meters, so in this case it would be 100 sumo deadlift high pulls.

If you don't know what those are, just click exercises and demos on the left hand side of the page, and then scroll down to crossfit exercises; there will be a video demonstrating the movement, it should say sumo deadlift high pull. Hope that helps

Comment #14 - Posted by: matt at April 29, 2011 6:30 PM

Matt,
I am in the STL area. How are you doing. I just started crossfitting two months ago, and I am hooked.

Comment #15 - Posted by: Keith at April 29, 2011 6:38 PM

OK folks...here goes. Since this is another WOD which includes rowing in recent days, I have an opinion and question. No doubt, within the CrossFit community...the Concept 2 rower is revered and a bit of jealously by all those that don't have one, who have to do SDHP as a substitute. It seems that if you don't have a Concept 2, then your "SOL". Well. at least that's how I feel, and that's why I am buying one for myself. I gave up trying to figure out if there is a less expensive adequate substitute out there. I am going to purchase one here shortly for myself, and my "box"....CrossFit450 is looking into getting a 2nd one. The Concept 2 can be a luxury to many who can't afford one. Is there another rower that CF Hq can recommend that is less expensive so that it can be purchased and used for WOD's by the less fortunate? After all, there are many types of boxes, bars, Kb's, jump ropes, etc. that work for the community. Maybe CF Hq could then have a comparison chart to determine what work would be required for comparison to the Concept 2. I'm not asking for some type of massive research project to get this done, but it would be nice to confidently purchase an alternate rower that everyone would be happy with. I'm not saying that CF Hq has to endorse another rower, but it seems that they are implicitly doing that with the Concept 2, if not intentionally (never asked and have never read anything about this). Just a thought,,,welcome comments or ideas. Doug

6:54 PR (last time 7:01)

Unbroken, no rest between exercises. 3:45 row, 1:52.5/500m. Tried to maintain a 1:52 pace. To shave off a few more seconds, I need to row even faster next time. Now that I know I can do those painful thrusters unbroken, I might be able to them a little faster too.
Warmed up well with lots of mobility work and a 1000m row in 4:20.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Memuc at April 30, 2011 1:27 AM

#16 do_b330...Funny this should come up when it did, as (after months of scouring) I purchased a "refurbished" Concept 2 rower from Craigs list for less than $300 JUST last night and I can do the rowing WODS at home now (forget the fact that I only have a doorway pullup bar here and can't kip hanging that low, so Dead-hang Jackie is the WOD for me...LOL)Look online for used ones; there's always someone, somewhere getting rid of exactly what you need, and EVERYONE looks ALL THE TIME! I told my buddy Alex about "a rower I was going to look at in [blank]..." and he finished my sentence with the town and the price; THAT is how many people are looking.

whew. out of the hospital and back in action after an elbow injury. It absolutely killed me not to be able to work out.

modified jackie - 1000m row, 50 squat thrusters ( no weight ) and 30 pushups in just under seven minutes. Pushups, incredibly, were the hardest part - my elbow's not really ready for them, it seems.

Row time 3:48, drag factor 130.

Thrusters, even light ones, always a struggle.

Lost over 30 seconds running from the C2 on the second floor far corner of the gym to the weights/pull-up area on the first floor. After watching the Rower Maintenance video in the Journal yesterday I considered breaking the C2 down and carrying it downstairs, but I didn't want to test the limits of my gym's tolerance for my CF antics...

I've watched alot of tutorial videos on Kipping and thought I would have been able to at least be able to perform some even half decently. Not even close so I stuck with the deadhang pullups which killed me.

Done after DL Wod so already warmed up.

Off of rower in 3:36. Better than previous. First 500m really tried big heel drive & pull. Seemed to help with pace.
Disapp w/time overall since off rower quicker. Thrusters & PU slower. Hips good job moving back on thrusters. Keep elbows up more. Put bar down 3 times on thr & took a few breaks while holding bar. Try keeping bar above head instead of rack to help shoulders. PU not bad 16,7,5,2
