A word of caution to people being inspired to start doing depth jumps. Work into it gradually, and don't do too many jumps in one session. Don't jump from high boxes unless you know you can handle it. A rule of thumb is that you should be able to rebound up higher than the box you jumped from, otherwise you are on a too high box.

If you don't take it easy on the depth jumps you will really easily get overtrained! The reason for this is just like Austin said: it's super taxing on the CNS. The same reason that makes it such a great exercise. Think of it like you would a 1RM snatch (or maybe a 3RM). Don't do them for time, or when fatigued.

Comment #7 - Posted by: sven at April 22, 2011 5:41 PM

For rope climb ascents, what is the prescibed height?

Comment #8 - Posted by: Jose Sanchez at April 22, 2011 5:46 PM

Matt - It's not wise to make suggestions!

In days of yore we called this the dirty dozen, if you have not seen it, watch Speal destroy this WOD:
http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/CrossFit_PostCertChipperFull.wmv

http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/CrossFit_PostCertChipperFull.mov

Also, Carey Kepler and Jolie go head to heat. Awesome.

#6 - almost always 15' for the rope climbs

Great effort Matt Chan on the 11.5 WOD vid from the game site. But did anyone else notice that it didn't look like he was meeting proper depth on the wallballs?

Comment #21 - Posted by: zach at April 22, 2011 10:30 PM

WOW! 29:52. Spent a little time looking for a jump but still, that was tough. Sub'd yesterday's workout with an hour of spin class so that may have a little affect. Today sub'd kettlebell swings with 50# dumbbell swings, double-unders with squat jumps, ring dips with 5 extra regular dips, and rope climbs with 30 each towel pull-ups and 30 BW squats. Wanted to fall over at the end of this one.

Need some community help. I am a pitcher and had Tommy John surgery in late February. I have no use of my right arm for lifting besides stability of light weight for example hands on bar for back squats. I was already having trouble gaining weight before but now with limited work capability it's falling off. It's all muscle mass too. So what kind of exercises can I do to strengthen my core and legs that has variety enough to lift 3 on 1 off?

Comment #25 - Posted by: Sam at April 23, 2011 5:21 AM

@25. Try the Wendler 531 program with a lot of legs. Good luck with recovery.

Had to do this in my parents' basement... LOTS of subs.
Jumped onto a bench instead of a box, 3 regular dips for every ring dip, 70# dumbbell swings for kettlebells, supermans for back extensions, 20# dumbbell in each hand thrusters for wall ball. Tried to do towel pullups, but I was too fried. Also, I had to sub 30# cleans for 35# so I wouldn't have to stop my workout to finagle a way to adjust the dumbbells.

40M/5'10"/170#

W/U: BP, 3x3 at 165-185-205; 2 reps of each exercise from "Dirty Dozen."

Sub'd rope pulls for climbs: 11:02

C/D: PNF of hamstrings.

New PR by 3:02. Back knee kissed floor on lunges; American-style KBS; bent-knee anchored AbMat sit-ups; squats below parallel on cleans and wall-balls. Sub'd rope pulls for climbs. For the rope pulls, I tied 180# of plates to one end of a 1.5" thick polypropylene (slippery) rope and pulled it, hand-over-hand, 15 feet, three times.

Everything felt pretty good today. Ring dips were probably the slowest part.

You know what's weird? After 3 years of CrossFit and 30 years of playing drums, I still S-S-S-SUCK at double-unders. What a time killer they are for me.

14:41

All other sets were unbroken. Even the heavy KB swings! I went into this WOD knowing that the double-unders were going to kill any possibility of posting a competitive time, so my only hope was to do everthing else unbroken.

I am so impressed that our little garage gym can do all this stuff.

We are moving across the country in June and a few weeks ago we bought our new house. I thought it was a bit odd (but not to you guys, I'm sure) that the disqualifying characteristic of numerous nice houses in nice neighbourhoods with large yards was a ceiling in the garage that would not allow my husband to lift a bar over his head or swing a kettlebell. We ended up buying a house with a tinyl yard but a cavernous garage. I mean, the ceiling will probably allow for a 15' rope. The house is still under construction and the walls are all see through and the floors are plywood.... but once we saw that garage, we were in love.

Our workouts are going to rock... too bad the kids have to play on the road. :-)

(OK, OK... there is a school and a park really near by as well as a bunch of bush behind the property..... we're not THAT bad as parents)

Did the CF Games Open 11.5

5 Rnds + 3 PC Rx

PCs were REALLY slow and I had too much swing on the T2Bs.
Need some skill work on those.

Also, next time I'll be doing the cleans outside. I'm always scared
I'll crack the ceramic tiles under my stall mats so I control the descent.

Rope climb to top of deck is 12.5' - start with hands at eye level. Time: 16:13.

This felt good until the latter half. Unbroken through double-unders at 2:30. Ring dips were better too, got first 15, really felt in rhythm. Started falling apart at KB swings - had to break at 20 - 2 pood is freakin heavy. From there, managed to go unbroken until wall ball, but my grip got trashed from the hang cleans. Finished wall ball at just under 12:00, and got the first 2 rope climbs without much trouble. But failed the 3rd rope climb...several times...I was struggling with the wrap, and my grip was just gone. I wasn't sure I would even be able to get it, but got lucky on my last attempt. This is slower than my previous, but rope climbs were closer to rx'd this time. This is a fun but tough WOD.

Some scaling needed - Assisted pullups on Nautilus brand machine, box jumps on 18" box (all that was available), assisted parallel bar dips on Nautilus brand machine, 20 DB power cleans followed by squats, 45 towel pulldows 110 lbs. Time slow partially due to having to dodge people and find equipment in Globo, but mostly I'm just not fit enough yet.
